Promoting Population Health In Local Communities: Parental Perceptions Of An Embedded Movement And Physical Activity Program For A Preschool Population, Jennifer Hight, Shirley P. O'Brien, Colleen M. Schneck

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: Many children reach kindergarten lacking age-appropriate motor skills because of a lack of access to early intervention services or a lack of continued early intervention beyond 3 years of age. Research suggests sedentary children become sedentary adults, which contributes to a growing population of unhealthy Americans with chronic health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and psychosocial difficulties. Parents often are not aware of the benefits of engaging in physical activity or possess a lack of awareness of their local resources. A community based preschool movement program was created to foster physical activity and promote …

Observing And Promoting Normative Developmental Outcomes: Reciprocity Is Key, Nicki L. Aubuchon-Endsley, Bryan M. Gee, Heather L. Ramsdell, Nancy Devine, Hillary E. Swann-Thomsen, Nicholas Burgett, Leah R. Kollmeyer, Michele R. Brumley

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: Occupational therapists focus on caregiver-infant reciprocity, which is influenced by a host of biopsychosocial factors and is predictive of developmental outcomes across domains. It is important for early intervention professions to understand how different forms of reciprocity may predict infant development in salient domains (i.e., language, mobility, and co-occupation). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate associations among related measures of development in and across age, while also exploring how reciprocity influences the acquisition of developmental milestones.

Method: We examined these important areas of development in relation to novel caregiver-infant co-occupational constructs in addition to …

Establishing reference conditions in rivers is important to understand environmental change and protect ecosystem integrity. Ranked third globally for fish biodiversity, the Mekong River has the world’s largest inland fishery providing livelihoods, food security, and protein to the local population. It is therefore of paramount importance to maintain the water quality and biotic integrity of this ecosystem. We analyzed land use impacts on water quality constituents (TSS, TN, TP, DO, NO3−, NH4+, PO43−) in the Lower Mekong Basin. We then used a best‐model regression approach with anthropogenic land‐use as independent variables and water quality parameters as the dependent variables, to …

Stereocontrolled Mannosylation by Hydrogen-Bond-Mediated Aglycone Delivery

Carbohydrates are the essential bio-molecules of life as they form the forefront of interactions with receptors, proteins, pathogens, or neighboring cells. On cell-surfaces, carbohydrates are mostly found as linear or branched glycoconjugates, and a majority of them are linked via either 1,2-cis or 1,2-trans O-glycosidic linkages. There is no template-driven pathway for achieving the synthesis of glycans unlike other biomolecules like proteins and nucleic acids. The synthesis of 1,2-trans glycosides can be reliably achieved via the neighboring group assistance. The synthesis of 1,2-cis glycosides is difficult because, beyond weak anomeric effects, there are …

Notch Signaling Represses Cone Photoreceptor Formation Through The Regulation Of Retinal Progenitor Cell States, Xueqing Chen, Mark M. Emerson Jul 2021

Notch Signaling Represses Cone Photoreceptor Formation Through The Regulation Of Retinal Progenitor Cell States, Xueqing Chen, Mark M. Emerson

Publications and Research

Notch signaling is required to repress the formation of vertebrate cone photoreceptors and to maintain the proliferative potential of multipotent retinal progenitor cells. However, the mechanism by which Notch signaling controls these processes is unknown. Recently, restricted retinal progenitor cells with limited proliferation capacity and that preferentially generate cone photoreceptors have been identified. Thus, there are several potential steps during cone genesis that Notch signaling could act. Here we use cell type specific cis-regulatory elements to localize the primary role of Notch signaling in cone genesis to the formation of restricted retinal progenitor cells from multipotent retinal progenitor cells. Localized …

Directional Integrity And Landmark Anchoring Of The Head Direction Cell System In The Tgf344-Ad Rat Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Laura E. Berkowitz Jul 2021

Directional Integrity And Landmark Anchoring Of The Head Direction Cell System In The Tgf344-Ad Rat Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Laura E. Berkowitz

Psychology ETDs

Spatial navigation and memory are impaired in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and are prominent behavioral markers of preclinical AD. The TgF344-AD rat model of AD exhibits similar behavioral and pathological features to humans and thus serves as an excellent model to investigate the mechanisms underlying spatial impairment in AD. Brain regions in the parahippocampal cortex contain spatially responsive pyramidal cells that support spatial navigation and memory including place cells, grid cells, and head direction cells. Furthermore, GABAergic interneurons in these regions support precise temporal organization of spike dynamics and may play a critical role in maintaining reliable …

(Wp 2021-06) A Contextualist Approach To Health Economics, John B. Davis, Robert Mcmaster

Economics Working Papers

This paper departs from the standard abstract economics approach to health economics to develop a specifically contextualist approach to the subject emphasizing social and historical circumstances affecting health provision. Following Polanyi, it sees the economy as socially embedded and economic relationships as social relationships. The paper critically examines Grossman’s natural science utility maximization explanation of people’s demand for health and health care, and advances an alternative social science account using a two-way analysis between micro level social relationships and the macro level organization of health in society. Three significant trends affecting the future of health systems are discussed. The paper …

Adaptive Mobile Eeg Noise Cancellation Using 2d Convolutional Autoencoders For Bci Authentication, Tyree Lewis Jul 2021

Adaptive Mobile Eeg Noise Cancellation Using 2d Convolutional Autoencoders For Bci Authentication, Tyree Lewis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Electroencephalography (EEG) signals can be used for many purposes and has the potential to be adapted to various systems. When EEG is recorded from users, these studies are performed primarily in an indoor environment, while the user is stationary. This is due to the levels of noise that are experienced when recording EEG data, to minimize errors in the data. This thesis aims to adapt tasks that are performed indoors to an external environment by removing both noise and artefacts in EEG, using a 2D Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE). The data is recorded from subjects is passed into the 2D CAE …

A Novel Behavioral Model In Initiation And Sustenance Of Toothbrushing Behavior Among Dental And Medical Students In India: An Exploratory Analysis, Dhiraj Panjwani, Mithun Pai, Shweta Yellapurkar, Aayush Poddar, Gururaghavendran Rajesh, Manoj Sharma

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Purpose: Toothbrushing holds key importance in practical, competent, and efficacious design to limit the formation of dental plaque on the dental tissues, in turn, leading to a decrease in dental diseases. The recent addition to this growing knowledge in health behavior research is the multi-Theory model (MTM) which addresses two crucial modules of health behavior: initiation and sustenance. In spite of reinforcing the habit of brushing twice daily, a lack of sustenance is found among young adults; hence, the objectives were to explore the substratal structure of MTM and to test the fit of MTM questionnaire in dental and medical …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a subclinical condition of intestinal inflammation, barrier dysfunction and malabsorption associated with growth faltering in children living in poverty. This study explores association of altered duodenal permeability (lactulose, rhamnose and their ratio) with higher burden of enteropathogen in the duodenal aspirate, altered histopathological findings and higher morbidity (diarrhea) that is collectively associated with linear growth faltering in children living in EED endemic setting. In a longitudinal birth cohort, 51 controls (WHZ > 0, HAZ > -1.0) and 63 cases (WHZ< -2.0, refractory to nutritional intervention) were recruited. Anthropometry and morbidity were recorded on monthly bases up to 24 months of age. Dual sugar assay of urine collected after oral administration of lactulose and rhamnose was assessed in 96 children from both the groups. Duodenal histopathology (n = 63) and enteropathogen analysis of aspirate via Taqman array card (n = 60) was assessed in only cases. Giardia was the most frequent pathogen and was associated with raised L:R ratio (p = 0.068). Gastric microscopy was more sensitive than duodenal aspirate in H. pylori detection. Microscopically confirmed H. pylori negatively correlated with HAZ at 24 months (r = -0.313, p = 0.013). Regarding histopathological parameters, goblet cell reduction significantly correlated with decline in dual sugar excretion (p< 0.05). Between cases and controls, there were no significant differences in the median (25th, 75th percentile) of urinary concentrations (μg/ml) of lactulose [27.0 (11.50, 59.50) for cases vs. 38.0 (12.0, 61.0) for controls], rhamnose [66.0 (28.0, 178.0) vs. 86.5 (29.5, 190.5)] and L:R ratio [0.47 (0.24, 0.90) vs. 0.51 (0.31, 0.71)] respectively. In multivariable regression model, 31% of variability in HAZ at 24 months of age among cases and controls was explained by final model including dual sugars. In conclusion, enteropathogen burden is associated with altered histopathological features and intestinal permeability. In cases and controls living in settings of endemic enteropathy, intestinal permeability test may predict linear growth. However, for adoption as a screening tool for EED, further validation is required due to its complex intestinal pathophysiology.
