The Effects Of Aces Score On Academic Achievement, Maya Hall, Dawson Jacobsma, Brittney Sween, Valerie Stokes

Student Projects

The researchers conducted a qualitative study using the phenomenological approach to understand the way Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) influence a college student's academic achievement. Data was collected through an online survey in which 77 students responded. Thereafter, researchers interviewed five college students who surveyed for an ACE score of four or higher. From the analysis, 6 themes related to ACE score and academic achievement were found: 1) Lack of Academic Motivation (Focus, Attendance, Work Quality, and Prioritizing), 2) Poor Time Management, 3) Negative Perception of Self, 4) See the world differently, 5) Empathetic Learners, 6) Career Choices. Domestic Violence And Sex Trafficking Among Adult And Minor Females, Rachel De Haan, Kallie Bakker, Brittney Sween

Student Projects

The organizers of this event recognized a need within their community to begin to understand that domestic violence and human trafficking are present and that they can do something to help. They began by gathering current information about what these two phenomena are, how they can be prevented, and how we can help when they return to society. The organizers then got to work by partnering with agencies in the community that specialize in working with individuals impacted by human trafficking and domestic violence and from there, prepared a community event.

"Whiteness Is In The Way Of Seeing:" Narrativizing Middle School Students' Intersectional Perceptions Of Whiteness In Literacy Instruction, Scott L. Moore Jan 2021

"Whiteness Is In The Way Of Seeing:" Narrativizing Middle School Students' Intersectional Perceptions Of Whiteness In Literacy Instruction, Scott L. Moore

Theses and Dissertations

Structured by the theoretical framework of intersectionality, this comparative case study traced perceptions of Whiteness in literacy instruction by three queer, transgender or gender expansive (TGE), or cisgender female, Black and/or Latinx middle school students. The study addresses significant gaps in research, which has rarely explored the valence of all aspects of the intersectional identities of this population of middle school literacy learners and tends to perpetuate erasure by adopting single- or multiple-axis lenses to students’ identities. The study was structured by a transferable curriculum crafted around questions, arts-based expressions, and narrative inquiry to support participants’ narrativizing about their intersectional …

Freedom Of Expression On The University Campus: An Examination Of Policy Rhetoric At Public Universities, Kara Elizabeth Latopolski

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Freedom of expression has historically been an issue in the United States on college and university campuses. With the recent rise of movements such as Black Lives Matter and Times Up, it is critically important that policies that govern student behavior reflect the constitutionally guaranteed right of students to engage in free speech. This study seeks to examine and compare policy and statement rhetoric that act as guidelines for freedom of expression on the public university campus. This study is significant because it will assist higher education administrators in framing a conversation surrounding freedom of expression policies at their respective …

Teachers’ Attitudes Towards Multicultural Curriculum, Constance Marie Robinson Jan 2021

Teachers’ Attitudes Towards Multicultural Curriculum, Constance Marie Robinson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to examine teachers’ attitudes toward multiculturalism and perceptions of multicultural curriculum. Teachers’ perception of whether their schools’ curriculum reflects multicultural perspectives was measured using the Multicultural Education Evaluation Checklist (Banks, 1994). Teachers’ attitudes toward multiculturalism was measured in three domains collected by the Munroe Multicultural Attitude Scale Questionnaire (MASQUE): know, care, and act (Munroe & Pearson, 2006). Survey responses were collected from 172 liberal arts teachers with 1-5 years of experience in a metropolitan area. The results suggested that teachers “act” scores on the MASQUE were positively associated with teachers’ perceptions of …

The Role Of The Zealous Advocate: Implementing Lgbtqia+-Conscious Ethics In Juvenile Criminal Defense To Combat The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Mia Tyminski Jan 2021

The Role Of The Zealous Advocate: Implementing Lgbtqia+-Conscious Ethics In Juvenile Criminal Defense To Combat The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Mia Tyminski

Hofstra Law Student Works

The criminal legal system is no stranger to the concept of race-conscious ethics.2 However, discussions surrounding other conscious-based ethics in our criminal legal system are scarce. Conscious-based ethics explore the need to understand the hardships a specific group undergoes without blinding oneself to the characteristics of the group. Conscious-based ethics seek out methods that reflect the historical significance and identities of specific groups.

There is a need for LGBTQIA+-conscious practices in the criminal legal system, especially within the juvenile criminal legal system. Youth that identify within the LGBTQIA+ community are more likely to engage with the criminal legal system …

Intimate Partner Violence Through The Eyes Of The Military “Dependent” Spouse, Xander Franklin, Tamara Kuennen Jan 2021

Intimate Partner Violence Through The Eyes Of The Military “Dependent” Spouse, Xander Franklin, Tamara Kuennen

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Throughout this Article, we will examine the extraordinary challenges faced by partners of military members when their relationships become abusive. Few legal scholars have written about the phenomenon; of them, most focus on the servicemember’s—not the partner’s—experience. This Article seeks to fill that gap by providing a contextual analysis of abuse as a continuing process, rather than a discrete incident, and by using the military setting to throw into sharp relief the structural facilitators that too often fade into the background. By constructing this analytical framework, we seek to create analytical applications beyond the confines of a military installation to …

Secondary Student Adult Transitions: Challenges, Barriers, And Interventions For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emily Carol Sutterer Jan 2021

Secondary Student Adult Transitions: Challenges, Barriers, And Interventions For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emily Carol Sutterer

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While relatively little is known about the experience of adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), disparity among approaches to transition planning indicates inadequate best practice. By evaluating the current state of empirical research literature, this review identifies the most common challenges experienced by adolescents and young adults with ASD. A thorough examination of several longitudinal studies, clinical trials, interview-based assessments, systematic reviews, and qualitative research, and preliminary findings indicate the urgency for increased and improved research regarding evidence-based interventions for the adult ASD population. Existing interventions confirm the necessity to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. Recommendations for future research and implications …

Examining Gender-Specific And Trauma-Informed Care For Traumatized Homeless Women, Paulina Aguilar Delgado, Mya Nunes Jan 2021

Examining Gender-Specific And Trauma-Informed Care For Traumatized Homeless Women, Paulina Aguilar Delgado, Mya Nunes

Undergraduate Review

Research indicates mixed shelters do not respond adequately to the needs of homeless women that have suffered trauma-related events; as female victims, these women are part of two systematically vulnerable populations who are subject to constant revictimization when trying to reintegrate into society. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the services delivered to adult homeless women who have been affected by trauma-related events make them feel safe, and whether the services provision is both gender specific and based on a trauma-informed approach. St. Vincent de Paul’s Ozanam Manor is a mixed gender transitional shelter serving homeless seniors …

The Development And Validation Of The General Attitudes Toward Police (Gap) Questionnaire, Rachel Greis Jan 2021

The Development And Validation Of The General Attitudes Toward Police (Gap) Questionnaire, Rachel Greis

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Previous studies have examined the relationships between various demographic characteristics (e.g., race/ethnicity, prior arrest experience, residential living area, political affiliation) and various measures of attitudes toward police (e.g., trustworthiness, legitimacy; Brown & Benedict, 2002; Hindelang, 1974; Rizer & Trautman, 2018; Schuck et al., 2008). However, a measure of overall general attitudes toward police has not been established. The main goal of the present research was to fill this gap in the literature by creating and validating a brief questionnaire that effectively captures respondents’ general attitudes toward police. In Study 1, a brief 14-item questionnaire that captured general attitudes toward police …

The Impact Emotions Have On Recall, Sadie-Marie Wright Jan 2021

The Impact Emotions Have On Recall, Sadie-Marie Wright

Undergraduate Research Posters 2021

The relationship of how emotions impact the way a person remembers events has helped improve fields outside of psychology, such as criminal justice and biology. Most studies that explore emotions and recall have had inconclusive results due to factors such as participants being tasked with free recall in response to stimuli such as the study done by Gorlin et al. (2018). With that knowledge, the current study focused on a task of recall from a short list of words along with a direct stimulus in the form of an emotional or non-emotional passage with hopes that it would affect the …
