School of Public Service Faculty Publications
This chapter discusses practical approaches for using participatory mapping as a tool to visualize and communicate sea level rise (SLR) and climate change risks, to share information about the vulnerability to, and threats of, climate change, and to co-produce knowledge with stakeholders. The examples presented in this chapter are from demonstrated applications in communities in Virginia (USA) that involve participatory mapping and that utilize a web-Geographic Information System (GIS). The web-GIS is innovatively combined with other technologies and participatory processes to create low-cost high-tech approaches so that even people with little to no knowledge of GIS can interact with maps …
Shape Mark (Trade Dress) Distinctiveness: A Comparative Inquiry Into U.S. And E.U. Trademark Law, Qadir Qeidary
Shape Mark (Trade Dress) Distinctiveness: A Comparative Inquiry Into U.S. And E.U. Trademark Law, Qadir Qeidary
William & Mary Business Law Review
Nowadays, the increasing application of visual elements, as non-traditional trademarks, to convey commercial information has brought about some new challenges to pioneer legal systems. In this regard, the question of shape marks’ (trade dress) distinctiveness has also caused some hot debates in U.S. and EU trademark law. Indeed, the most challenging legal question before those legal jurisdictions is about the method of transplanting the concept of trademark distinctiveness into the mechanism through which shape marks, as visual mediums, perform a trademark communicative function. Technically, the indefinite nature of shape marks or trade dress marks and lack of a definitive or …

The Mammy, The Strong, Or The Broken: Politics Of Hair Afrocentricities In Scripted Television, Hayley Blackburn
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
The general literature on the experiences of Black women in America consistently discusses the way that more Afrocentric appearances— whether through skin tone, hairstyles and textures, clothing, language, or a combination of all the above— have been negatively framed throughout cultural and media histories ...
The Jury Trial Reinvented, Christopher Robertson, Michael Elias Shammas
The Jury Trial Reinvented, Christopher Robertson, Michael Elias Shammas
Texas A&M Law Review
The Framers of the Sixth and Seventh Amendments to the United States Constitution recognized that jury trials were essential for maintaining democratic legitimacy and avoiding epistemic crises. As an institution, the jury trial is purpose-built to engage citizens in the process of deliberative, participatory democracy with ground rules. The jury trial provides a carefully constructed setting aimed at sorting truth from falsehood.
Despite its value, the jury trial has been under assault for decades. Concededly, jury trials can sometimes be inefficient, unreliable, unpredictable, and impractical. The COVID–19 pandemic rendered most physical jury trials unworkable but spurred some courts to begin …
Strategies For Highlighting Items Within Visual Scene Displays To Support Augmentative And Alternative Communication Access For Those With Physical Impairments, Kevin Pitt, John W. Mccarthy
Strategies For Highlighting Items Within Visual Scene Displays To Support Augmentative And Alternative Communication Access For Those With Physical Impairments, Kevin Pitt, John W. Mccarthy
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Purpose: In contrast to the traditional grid-based display, visual scene displays (VSDs) offer a new paradigm for aided communication. For individuals who cannot select items from an AAC display by direct selection due to physical impairments, AAC access can be supported via methods such as item scanning. Item scanning sequentially highlights items on a display until the individual signals for selection. How items are highlighted or scanned for AAC access can impact performance outcomes. Further, the effectiveness of a VSD interface may be enhanced through consultation with experts in visual communication. Therefore, to support AAC access for those with physical …

This essay initiates a historiographical account of speech departments in the University of the Philippines (UP) and Silliman University. Founded in 1959 and 1965, respectively, these academic formations are the two existing bastions for the comprehensive and disciplinary study and practice of speech/speech communication in the country and the rest of Asia. This essay explores a) the use of speech as the organizing principle of scholarly inquiry in the Philippine modern university, b) the pedagogies composing Philippine speech curricula, c) the performances enacted by speech programs in UP and Silliman University, d) the speaking subjects that speech departments seek to …
'The Importance Of Theatrical Costumes In Kosovo', Cennet Lika
'The Importance Of Theatrical Costumes In Kosovo', Cennet Lika
UBT International Conference
Costume is one of the most important means of visual communication in terms of characters on stage. In addition to costumes, accessories are a very important tool to reflect the mood, profession, status, age, gender, culture and character for the audience. Accessories include pieces such as: bags, hats, jewelry, socks, shoes, and more. On stage, during a theatrical performance, emotions are expressed through costume and scenography. In order to achieve this successfully, and for maximum effect, the costume designer must be in close contact with the director and the actors during all the stages of the design process and also …

The Incorporation Of Principles Of The Reggio Emilia Approach In A North American Pre-School Music Curriculum: An Action Research, Amanda Paige Smith
The Incorporation Of Principles Of The Reggio Emilia Approach In A North American Pre-School Music Curriculum: An Action Research, Amanda Paige Smith
Visions of Research in Music Education
This study examined the experiences of children in two pre-school classes in a music curriculum that incorporated principles of the Reggio Emilia approach. Video recordings, transcriptions of child compositions, and field notes were analyzed through the lens of the Reggio principles. Findings demonstrated that light and shadow play enabled the children to make discoveries, empowered them to create their own learning experiences, and gave them agency over their learning and the learning of their classmates. Group composition provided a musical equivalent to the creation of murals in the visual arts domain of Reggio Emilia and enabled children to communicate musically …

Pilot Development Of A Critical Food Safety Message Visual Communication Tool For Farmers’ Market Vendors, Lilly W. Jan, Shannon M. Coleman, Anirudh Naig
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Farmers’ markets are popular sources of fresh and ready-to-eat foods for consumers in the United States. However, research indicates that food safety practices of vendors and their employees serve as a concern for customers. This pilot study focused on assessing a visual-based, minimal-text educational tool that was disseminated to farmers’ market vendors and employees (n = 27) in Iowa. The tool was evaluated using a post-intervention survey of vendors’ and employees’ knowledge of food safety practices and their attitudes towards the educational tool. The results did not show a statistically significant increase in attitude and knowledge scores of farmers’ market …

Using Online Genres To Promote Students’ Audience Awareness, Elena Taylor
Using Online Genres To Promote Students’ Audience Awareness, Elena Taylor
Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence
Writing assignments that students complete in university courses are typically designed for evaluation and grading by the instructor, who, therefore, acts as the sole reader of student written work. However, most written genres students would--and do--encounter in the world beyond the classroom are composed for diverse audiences who influence writers’ text construction considerably. Because most students will be likely to write for multiple audiences as part of their career or future academic endeavors, it is crucial for them to develop a sense of audience awareness as an indispensable rhetorical concept that shapes composing processes. Writing online presents a great opportunity …

Threatened American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus Americanus) Consumed By Northern Short-Tailed Shrew (Blarina Brevicauda) And Trap Avoidance By Silphidae, Jacob W. Farriester, Brian C. Peterson, Keith Geluso, W. Wyatt Hoback
Western North American Naturalist
During the last century, the range of the American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus Olivier) has been reduced by >90%. Only isolated, extant populations of this federally threatened species now exist, primarily in the Great Plains. Although the primary reason for this decline remains unclear, anthropogenic changes to habitat and vertebrate food sources used for reproduction have played a significant role. Other factors may be contributing to the decline, but little research has been conducted on understanding predators of N. americanus and how the beetle avoids them. Herein, we document a new predatory species for N. americanus, the northern …

Preservation Of Urban Fabric: Towards Sustainable Development Of Tarim City In Hadhramout Valley, Yemen, Anwer Ahmed Baeissa
Hadhramout University Journal of Natural & Applied Sciences
The Old Hadhrami Cities such as Tarim are famous for many luxurious palaces whose buildings integrated both the Hadhrami architectural original style and the Asian one. Thus the use of local construction materials in the city's luxurious palaces made of mud clearly indicates the concept of active participation of the inhabitants in determining the quality of the architectural heritage which emerged from their social and cultural traditions and customs. This special use of local construction materials in buildings gives the city a distinguished position among other cities in the region. The present study aims at highlighting mainly the source of …

Becoming Magic: Acquiring The Artist Identity, Kathleen A. Unrath
Becoming Magic: Acquiring The Artist Identity, Kathleen A. Unrath
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
This research mines the internal reflective process of an artist/researcher/teacher who witnesses her own becoming, seeing herself, in multiples and weaves a multimodal narrative while contemplating, revealing, and living multiple identities through visual inquiry. The purpose of this research, in its broadest sense, is to better understand the nature of artistic identity and how it is acquired in personal, social and educational contexts. As an artist/researcher/teacher, I seek to know how we might create more fertile conditions and facilitate appropriate rites of passage for transitioning individuals from student/teacher/aspirant to self-actualized artist.

Central Nervous System: Development, Function, And Applications Of The Glymphatic System (With Additional Neuroscience Topics), Austin Fisher
Central Nervous System: Development, Function, And Applications Of The Glymphatic System (With Additional Neuroscience Topics), Austin Fisher
Theses
The presence of accumulated toxic protein aggregations such as amyloid-β, tau, and α- synuclein are implicated in the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s (Soto 2003). Thus, the clearance or removal of these harmful byproducts in healthy brain aging previously represented an unknown system whose functionality is likely to be clinically significant. The finding that directional flow of CSF and interstitial fluid through the brain ensures brain clearance sparked numerous research projects which sought to elaborate on what is now known as the glymphatic system. After initial research revealed the fundamentals of the glymphatic system, scientist J. Iliff defined …
South To South: Connections In The Ordinary, Fostering Empathy By Encouraging Travel Through Design, Bethany Wetzel
South To South: Connections In The Ordinary, Fostering Empathy By Encouraging Travel Through Design, Bethany Wetzel
Theses
South 2 South: Connections in the Ordinary, explores similarities between South Korea and Alabama through a designed sensory experience that allows users to engage in cross-cultural information in an inviting and familiar way with the use of recognizable motifs in order to reduce fear, foster empathy, and encourage travel. The creation of South 2 South was informed by research on travel fears, empathy, and transnational relations between the two regions. South 2 South helps facilitate the beginnings of these interactions by presenting new cultural information directly to the more insular communities of northeast Alabama. My hope is that South …
Where Are The Women? A Feminist Field Guide To The Museum, Taylor Weaver
Where Are The Women? A Feminist Field Guide To The Museum, Taylor Weaver
Theses
Linda Nochlin’s seminal 1971 essay, “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” was at the fore of the great battle cries of many feminist scholars that drew attention to the limitation’s that female artist’s face in the art world. Women have systematically been left out of the art historical narrative while their male counterparts remain at the forefront.
There are many women that are very prominently represented in museums. They are largely nude and have been represented by male artists. While I do not argue that nudity in paintings should not exist, I do insist that museum goers become …
