It’S The Cultural Difference That Makes The Difference: International Collaboration In Multidiscipline, Transcultural, Design Pedagogy, Clive Hilton, Muxing Gao, Rong Wei
Learn X Design Conference Series
For three years, the Communication University of Zhejiang (CUZ), China, and Coventry University (CU), UK, have been collaborating in an annual project that sees multidisciplinary, transcultural groups of undergraduate and postgraduate design students engaging in projects that help prepare them for future employment as culturally aware global designers. Its focus is on an enhanced under-standing of the importance of cultural dimensions, research led collaboration, and the need for em-pathetic, coordinated communication. In these accelerated, Collaborative Online International Learn-ing (COIL) projects, the students self-direct their actions to rapidly break down initial inhibitions in becoming effective, creative problem solvers who, by the …

Assessment Of Ideation Effectiveness In Design Thinking: The Impact Of Morphological Analysis In The Process Of Creative Problem Solving, Farzaneh Eftekhari, Mohammad Jahanbakht, Farnoosh Sharbafi
Learn X Design Conference Series
Creative problem solving (CPS) emerged as a critical soft skill for students, yet the evaluation and effectiveness of the CPS methods is not fully understood. This study examined the ideation effectiveness of junior design students. Students are asked to ideate for a complex challenge, a 1000-floor elevator in two phases, with a morphological analysis (MA) method introduced to them as an intervention after the first phase. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the MA method in the students’ ideation process and their creative thinking by using four measures of novelty, quality, quantity, and variety using the quantitative and qualitative methods. …

Improving Slideshows: Part 1, Matt Meier
S Center Resources
Matt Meier, Director of the Center for Speaking and Listening, shares a practical tip for creating more effective PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides presentations: minimizing on-screen text. By limiting slides to 7–10 words and avoiding full sentences, speakers help audiences focus on listening rather than reading. The video outlines strategies for converting text into visual imagery and highlights available services at DePauw's Speaking and Listening Center.
Usdla: An Instructional Media Selection Guide For Distance Learning, Jolly T. Holden, Philip Westfall
Usdla: An Instructional Media Selection Guide For Distance Learning, Jolly T. Holden, Philip Westfall
Online Journal of Space Communication
Purpose and Use of the Media Selection Guide
Increasingly, educators and trainers are challenged within their respective
organizations to provide for the efficient distribution of instructional con-
tent using instructional media. The appropriate selection of instructional
media to support distance learning is not intuitive and does not occur as a
matter of personal preference. On the contrary, instructional media selec-
tion is a systematic sequence of qualitative processes based on sound in-
structional design principles. Although media selection is often mentioned
when studying the discipline of instructional technology or Instructional
Systems Design (ISD), it is sometimes overlooked when applying the …

Nonprofit Social Media Internships: A Handbook, Allison M. Laroy
The Cardinal Edge
This brief research report provides details on a study that examines how nonprofits can best prepare their interns and how interns can best prepare themselves for a role in engaging audiences through social media. Through a literature review on nonprofit social media and internships, a series of qualitative interviews with interns and supervisors, and the researcher’s lived experiences as a social media intern, a handbook was developed for nonprofit social media internships. This guide is relevant to the specific experiences of nonprofit social media internships, includes advice on training, mentorship, and best practices, and finally, it incorporates further resources on …
Patriarchy, 20th Century Bengal And The Naxalbari Movement (1965-1975): Tracing The Roots Through Lives Of Others, Pritha Sarkar
Patriarchy, 20th Century Bengal And The Naxalbari Movement (1965-1975): Tracing The Roots Through Lives Of Others, Pritha Sarkar
Journal of International Women's Studies
The objective in this paper is to identify the roots of patriarchy in the Naxalbari movement (1965-1975) through one of the texts in Indian English Literature. The Naxalbari movement is the first peasant revolution within twenty years of Indian Independence that initiated in a small village named Naxalbari situated in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. Through Lives of Others (2014) by Neil Mukherjee the paper analyses the patriarchy of the 20th century urban Bengal society and how it seeped into the movement. Therefore, it exposes the androcentric underpinning of a movement dedicated to creating an egalitarian society. While …

Contemporary Native American Art: Contemplating Fashion And Indigenous Craft, Madison Seiter
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on Indigenous and contemporary cultural representation expressed in the art of Wendy Red Star, Lisa Telford, and Jamie Okuma as presented in their clothing, shoes, and jewelry. These artists challenge marginalization through their works while also showcasing hybridity, cultural reclamation, and continuity through the materials and processes utilized. This thesis examines the elevation of Indigenous craft within the framework of recent craft theory. It explores what their art communicates in the contemporary art world and considers their significance to Native tradition, generational knowledge, innovation, and technical skill. The works discussed recognize the importance of Native art expressing …
Freedom From Things: A Defense Of The Disjunctive Obligation In Contract Law, Jennifer Nadler
Freedom From Things: A Defense Of The Disjunctive Obligation In Contract Law, Jennifer Nadler
Articles & Book Chapters
This article argues that the disjunctive obligation in contract law can be justified on moral grounds. It argues that from a perspective that regards human beings as free agents capable of choice and therefore independent of material objects, the contracting parties must be understood as agreeing to mutually guarantee one another's ownership of a certain value. This guarantee can be fulfilled either by handing over what was promised or by making up the difference between the market value and the contract value of what was promised. The plaintiff's contractual right is therefore a right that the defendant perform or pay. …

The U.S.–Mexican War: Visualizing Contested Spaces From Parlor To Battlefield, Erika Pazian
The U.S.–Mexican War: Visualizing Contested Spaces From Parlor To Battlefield, Erika Pazian
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The U.S.-Mexican War[1] (1846-1848) was a watershed event that transformed the North American continent politically, socially, and ideologically. With the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Mexico lost approximately half of its national territory in the north, and the United States acquired the modern states of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, and portions of Colorado and Wyoming. Both nations were plagued by internal conflicts after the war, and each was plunged into civil war within fifteen years of its conclusion.
During this time of turmoil, Mexican and U.S. artists created and recreated myriad images …
After Abstract Expressionism: Reconsidering The “Death Of Painting” At Midcentury, Natasha Roje
After Abstract Expressionism: Reconsidering The “Death Of Painting” At Midcentury, Natasha Roje
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The “death of painting” is a mantra repeated throughout the twentieth century, at once taken for granted and endlessly debated. This dissertation reconsiders the “death of painting” from the vantage point of the midcentury moment in the U.S. in order to challenge the notion that artists of this time had “killed,” objectified or dissolved painting into 1960s practices like performance and Minimalism. With Abstract Expressionism acting as the fulcrum between a historical paradigm in which painting was dominant, even synonymous with “art,” I focus on the work of three pairs of artists to understand how painting came to be considered …

Maktabah Syamilah As An Information Seeking Tool For Higher Education In Islamic Studies, Asnil Aidah Ritonga
Maktabah Syamilah As An Information Seeking Tool For Higher Education In Islamic Studies, Asnil Aidah Ritonga
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study is a personal perspective from the experience of teaching Islamic Studies in a Master's Program of Islamic Higher Education. Students' limited knowledge and skills while seeking reference sources for Islamic studies serve as an obstacle in writing authentic academic works. Therefore, the use of Maktabah Syamilah as a reference tool for Islamic studies is very important for students. The skill of using Maktabah Syamilah is necessary because scientific works, including papers or research at Islamic universities, demand the use of original Arabic literature. Hence, proficiency in using this tool requires serious training and should be promoted by the …

Dialogic Pedagogy And Semiotic-Dialogic Inquiry Into Visual Literacies And Augmented Reality, Zoe Hurley
Dialogic Pedagogy And Semiotic-Dialogic Inquiry Into Visual Literacies And Augmented Reality, Zoe Hurley
All Works
Technological determinism has been driving conceptions of technology enhanced learning for the last two decades at least. The abrupt shift to the emergency delivery of online courses during COVID-19 has accelerated big tech’s coup d’état of higher education, perhaps irrevocably. Yet, commercial technologies are not necessarily aligned with dialogic conceptions of learning while a technological transmission model negates learners’ input and interactions. Mikhail Bakhtin viewed words as the multivocal bridge to social thought. His theory of the polysemy of language, that has subsequently been termed dialogism, has strong correlations with the semiotic philosophy of American pragmatist Charles Sanders Peirce. Peirce’s …
Between Yarn And Electrons: A Method For Designing Textural Expressions In Electromagnetic Smart Textiles, Erin Lewis
Between Yarn And Electrons: A Method For Designing Textural Expressions In Electromagnetic Smart Textiles, Erin Lewis
Nordes Conference Series
The design of smart textiles presents a discrepancy of scale where the designer works at the level of structural textile design while facets of the material express at scales beyond one’s senses. Without methods to narrow this gap, certain expressional domains of the textile are closed off from design possibilities. The aim of the research has been to design a method for observing, visualizing, and describing expressions of electromagnetism in textiles. Through a method of textile surface scanning, one can produce a visualization of its electromagnetic field. Woven textile samples observed through this method reveal a textural quality that exists …
Scaling Up Diversity And Inclusion: From Classroom To Municipality, Annukka Svanda, Martina Čaić, Tuuli Mattelmäki
Scaling Up Diversity And Inclusion: From Classroom To Municipality, Annukka Svanda, Martina Čaić, Tuuli Mattelmäki
Nordes Conference Series
This paper investigates opportunities for scaling up the diversity and inclusion of international residents at the level of municipality service offerings. The starting point is a set of small-scale service design projects actively involving municipal representatives and university students. This collaboration was part of a service design course at Aalto University addressing challenges faced by the municipality of Espoo, Finland. Through triangulation of three data sources i) precourse meetings, ii) email surveys during the course, and iii) semi-structured interviews with participating municipal representatives after the course, this paper offers insights on how smallscale service design collaborations can facilitate the scaling …

Flip: An Interaction Design Project For Helping People To Break Echo Chamber, Rong Zhao
Flip: An Interaction Design Project For Helping People To Break Echo Chamber, Rong Zhao
Theses
Social media constantly instills you with the things you like and the things you are willing to believe in, even disinformation, creating an echo chamber in which users will never have other opinions. People are controlled by algorithms so that social media platforms ensure we only get a single side of every story. The personalization of social media minimizes people's view of the world and causes the division of society. My thesis explores the interaction methods to encourage people to be exposed to multiple perspectives about things by reading the same story from different sources. To solve the problem, I …

Strange Weather We're Having: Save Your Town Together, Today, Ben Mclauchlin
Theses
We don’t talk about climate change with our friends and family and that’s a problem. The systemic harm of climate change will continue to impact us if we continue to avoid addressing what we can do to help. Strange Weather We’re Having is a semi-cooperative board game designed to cultivate conversation, inspire joy, and spread awareness about what you can do to help against climate change. This game accomplishes this through the use of collectively-supportive game mechanics, vibrant visuals, and dialogue designed to spark hope and delight. Players become residents who are susceptible to different stressors caused by climate change. …

Ressentir: A Multi-Layered Visual Filter For Enhancing Cinematic Experience, Anirudh Srinivasan
Ressentir: A Multi-Layered Visual Filter For Enhancing Cinematic Experience, Anirudh Srinivasan
Theses
Watching any digital content without audio is going to be monotonous, as one vital component of cinema is lost entirely. Removing audio will significantly affect cinematic experience and make movie-watching extremely boring for someone who cannot hear. Audio, in a movie, is comprised of dialogs, music and background sounds. One must realize that removing audio would take away, not just sound but also emotions attached to scenes. At times there might be only background score, which does not necessarily mean that these scenes are unimportant. There are obviously instances where music alone would get across the message. This thesis explores …
Concretization Of Depression, Jing Zhou
Concretization Of Depression, Jing Zhou
Theses
Depression is a common mental disorder, but many people cannot understand the pain experienced by depression patients. Even after having a certain understanding of depression, it is difficult for us as normal people to empathize with the true inner feelings of depression patients. However, some people not only fail to understand the depressed patients, but they also speak slanderously and scold these depressive patients for their overly emotional actions. For these reasons, I want to show the true feelings of depression patients or the pain experienced as a depression patient through motion graphics. Motion graphic is an effective way to …
