International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

In American football, offseason training is designed to promote increases in muscle strength and size in athletes. Tracking changes in body composition may confer key information about the effectiveness of training programs to football practitioners. PURPOSE: The present study assessed the relationship between body composition changes estimated by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in football players during the initial period of an offseason training program. METHODS: Body composition in 29 NCAA Division III American football players (mean ± SD; age: 19.7 ± 1.5 y; height: 179.8 ± 6.6 cm; body mass [BM]: 96.1 ± …

Harty, Christian Rodriguez, Dale Keith, Jacob Green, Jake Boykin, Jacob Dellinger, Sarah White, Abegale D. Williams, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

In the growing world of health and well-being, three-dimensional (3D) scanning is emerging as a popular tool to assess body composition. While body composition cannot be truly “measured” in living humans, it can be approximated. This, however, leads to two types of errors (i.e., technical and biological) in the body composition assessment. PURPOSE: This study was used to determine what percent or range of percentages in body fat one must exceed before concluding a real change has occurred. By conducting assessments on separate days, with only a short period of time between them, true changes in body composition are …

Relationships Between Functional Performance And Quadriceps Muscle Size And Quality In Healthy Older Women, Ahalee C. Farrow, Chinonye C. Agu-Udemba, Ethan A. Mitchell, Ty B. Palmer Feb 2021

Relationships Between Functional Performance And Quadriceps Muscle Size And Quality In Healthy Older Women, Ahalee C. Farrow, Chinonye C. Agu-Udemba, Ethan A. Mitchell, Ty B. Palmer

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Ultrasound assessments of quadriceps cross-sectional area (CSA) and echo intensity (EI) are commonly used to evaluate lower-body muscle size and quality in older adults. It has been hypothesized that muscle CSA and EI of the quadriceps may be important predictors of functional performances such as gait speed and vertical jump power. However, limited data exist regarding how these parameters associate with performance during a timed up-and-go (TUG) task. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between TUG performance and muscle CSA and EI of the quadriceps in older women. METHODS: Twenty healthy older women …

Stratton, Christian Rodriguez, Dale Keith, Jacob Green, Jake Boykin, Jacob Dellinger, Sarah White, Abegale D. Williams, Brielle Dehaven, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices administer electrical currents through surface electrodes to estimate overall body fluids from the measured resistance and reactance of bodily tissues. The proportion of fat versus fat-free mass can be further estimated by these devices using algorithms developed from reference data. BIA devices are commonly used in field as well as laboratory settings due to their convenience, ease of use, and relatively low cost. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the day-to-day precision error (PE) and least significant change (LSC) of the percent body fat (PBF), fat mass (FM), and fat-free mass …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

An individual’s resting metabolic rate (RMR) is commonly the largest contributor to total daily energy expenditure. Prediction equations are most often employed by practitioners to estimate RMR, due to their superior practicality in many settings relative to laboratory methods like indirect calorimetry (IC). The ability to quantify RMR change over time may be more valuable than cross-sectional estimates as practitioners can then utilize these changes to prescribe adjustments to one’s nutritional intake. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of several commonly used prediction equations to track RMR changes during a hypercaloric nutrition intervention and …

Gender Differences In Ncaa Non-Revenue Sports: An Examination Of Men’S And Women’S Soccer Coaching Salaries, David Eaton, Martin Milkman Feb 2021

Gender Differences In Ncaa Non-Revenue Sports: An Examination Of Men’S And Women’S Soccer Coaching Salaries, David Eaton, Martin Milkman

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This paper examines the determinants of head coaching salaries in men’s and women’s collegiate soccer. Both of these sports are considered non-revenue sports, and thus differences in sports revenues should not impact coaching salaries. We analyze salaries of head coaches in these sports to determine if i) coaches in women’s soccer earn systematically less than coaches of men’s soccer, and ii) whether there is a difference in salaries between male and female coaches of women’s soccer. We find that salaries for coaches of women’s soccer are lower than those for men’s soccer. We also find that there is no statistically …

The Effect Of Attendance On Home Field Advantage In The National Football League: A Natural Experiment, Justin Ehrlich, Joel Potter, Shane Sanders Jan 2021

The Effect Of Attendance On Home Field Advantage In The National Football League: A Natural Experiment, Justin Ehrlich, Joel Potter, Shane Sanders

Sport Management - All Scholarship

While economists have previously noted that home field advantage is affected by crowd density, isolating this effect is difficult since crowd size is likely endogenous with team ability and game matchup. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a unique natural experiment since local governments have introduced safety protocols that varies widely across the United States. These safety protocols have limited attendance in varying ways for live sporting events, including National Football League games. Given the differential (and exogenous) attendance restrictions, we were able to isolate three broad categories of attendance: 1) games without attendance restrictions (seasons 2016-2019), 2) games with limited …

Gambling With Debt: The English Premier League, Edward Robinson Jan 2021

Gambling With Debt: The English Premier League, Edward Robinson

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper aims to investigate the impact of debt on financial performance in the English Premier League from the 2000/01 season to the 2017/18 season. Panel model estimations concluded debt has a significant inverse relationship with financial performance. This relationship may potentially be stronger in larger clubs and could be present through human capital investment’s significant direct relationship with financial performance. This further emphasised usages of intangible assets as a player human capital investment indicator, rather than using wage costs like previous studies. Furthermore, filling a gap regarding how capital structures may be used to impact financial performance within’ football.
