Exploring Early Signaling Associated With Complex Stressors, Julia A. Penatzer Jan 2021

Exploring Early Signaling Associated With Complex Stressors, Julia A. Penatzer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Humans are constantly exposed to a vast number of stressors in our everyday lives from social interactions to physical activity to chemical exposures, to name a few. These stressors have significant impacts on an individual, from the cellular to whole organismal level. The body contains an intricate communication system that elicits a number of both biological and physiological responses as it attempts to maintain homeostasis. Observing these responses to stressors, can offer insight into a number of outcomes, which can be beneficial (increasing life longevity) or detrimental (leading to a disease state). By measuring specific biological adaptations at particular time …

The Impact Of A Democratic Leadership Style On Employee Satisfaction, Customer Satisfaction, And Customer Loyalty At A Midsized Nonprofit Sport And Recreation Center, John Vincent, Michael Baptiste Jan 2021

The Impact Of A Democratic Leadership Style On Employee Satisfaction, Customer Satisfaction, And Customer Loyalty At A Midsized Nonprofit Sport And Recreation Center, John Vincent, Michael Baptiste

Global Sport Business Journal

This study examined how leadership styles correlated with employee job satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and customer loyalty by surveying managers, employees, and customers at a midsized nonprofit sport and recreation center. Drawing on the extant literature and Heskett et al.’s (1994) service-profit chain model, we developed a conceptual model that hypothesized how the adoption of a democratic leadership style would facilitate employee job satisfaction, and mediate other positive outcomes. Of the three leadership styles examined, autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire, only democratic leadership was found to be positively correlated with employee job satisfaction and customer satisfaction. The results showed that employee job …

A Research Assistant's Perceived Skillset When Utilizing Deception, Ahmad Sarris Jan 2021

A Research Assistant's Perceived Skillset When Utilizing Deception, Ahmad Sarris

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The use of deception in research has been a long-debated topic for several decades. Generally, research on deception has concerned its justifications, common methods, controversies, and uses inside and outside the broad field of psychology. Although the bulk of this research is typically concerned with exploring the potential drawbacks and controversies of deception on participants, the potential advantages and disadvantages to those implementing it has not been explored. More specifically, there are unanswered questions about what skills can be gained or perceived to be gained by research assistants utilizing deception. The present study explored whether deception utilization and/or the presence …

Spatial Non‑Stationarity In Opioid Prescribing Rates: Evidence From Older Medicare Part D Beneficiaries, Seulki Kim, Carla Shoff, Tse-Chuan Yang Jan 2021

Spatial Non‑Stationarity In Opioid Prescribing Rates: Evidence From Older Medicare Part D Beneficiaries, Seulki Kim, Carla Shoff, Tse-Chuan Yang

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Previous research that examined spatial patterns of opioid prescribing rates and factors associated with them has mainly relied on a global modeling perspective, overlooking the potential spatial non-stationarity embedded in these associations. In this study, we investigate whether there are spatially non-stationary associations between opioid prescribing rates and key characteristics of older Medicare Part D beneficiaries and their prescribers using several data sources from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. All measures are aggregated to the ZIP code level, and a total sample size of 18,126 ZIP codes is included in the analyses. Our descriptive results from geographically weighted …

Revisiting The Beneficiaries Of The Scotus Ruling Striking Down Paspa, Sam Fullerton, Ronald Dick, Michael Mccall Jan 2021

Revisiting The Beneficiaries Of The Scotus Ruling Striking Down Paspa, Sam Fullerton, Ronald Dick, Michael Mccall

AMTP Proceedings 2021

A Supreme Court ruling in 2018 essentially rendered restrictions on sports gambling to run counter to states’ rights, thus in conflict with the Constitution of the United States. As a consequence, 13 states and the District of Columbia now have legalized sports gambling. Initial research into the consequences of this ruling identified 12 potential beneficiaries. Subsequent research entailing an assessment of new literature and a survey of executive opinion involving a number of marketing executives who work within the field of sports marketing expanded the findings from the earlier study. This extension of the preliminary study found 14 beneficiaries rather …

Game Changing Leadership: Developing A Student Athlete Leadership Identity Development Model, Sally Gates Parish Jan 2021

Game Changing Leadership: Developing A Student Athlete Leadership Identity Development Model, Sally Gates Parish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

There are several theoretical models and approaches to define the leadership identity development of college students, however, none of these models adequately frame the specific leadership identity development of collegiate student athletes. The purpose of this grounded theory study is to develop a leadership model to address this gap by explaining the leadership values and behaviors unique to student athletes and to understand if their leadership experiences occur in a staged, scaffolded way. The research questions guiding this study are: What are the staged, scaffolded leadership identity development experiences of collegiate student athletes? What are the common leadership values and …

Taking The Pulse Of A New Football Franchise': Team Identification And The Melbourne Heart Fc In Australia's A-League, Anthony K. Kerr, Aaron J. Wijeratne Jan 2021

Taking The Pulse Of A New Football Franchise': Team Identification And The Melbourne Heart Fc In Australia's A-League, Anthony K. Kerr, Aaron J. Wijeratne

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In a bid to revive soccer’s fortunes in Australia, the A-League was created whereby private franchises represented the country’s major cities. This article examines the Melbourne Heart FC and the emotional attachment of members during its first two seasons. A survey methodology was used to identify attitudes towards the brand and the Sport Spectator Identification Scale (SSIS) measured their identification with the franchise. There is conclusive evidence that strong levels of identification can develop quickly for a new team, yet three of the scale’s items made a weaker contribution. There is also a suggestion that identity is multi-layered. New sport …

A Qualitative Exploration Of Ticket-Pricing Decisions In Intercollegiate Athletics, Craig A. Morehead, Stephen L. Shapiro, Lamar Reams, Chad Mcevoy, Timothy M. Madden Jan 2021

A Qualitative Exploration Of Ticket-Pricing Decisions In Intercollegiate Athletics, Craig A. Morehead, Stephen L. Shapiro, Lamar Reams, Chad Mcevoy, Timothy M. Madden

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Ticket sales represent a significant revenue stream for NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision athletic departments, yet little is known about how administrators determine prices for those tickets. Utilizing strategic planning as the primary framework and supplemented by stakeholder theory, this study examines ticket-pricing decisions from the viewpoint of athletic administrators with various departmental responsibilities to better understand the role of ticket pricing in intercollegiate sport. Twenty athletic administrators, representing two Power 5 and two Group of 5 institutions, were interviewed about their experiences with ticket pricing. In addition to common pricing objectives related to revenue, patronage, and operations, administrators also suggested …
