Using Carrots Not Sticks To Cultivate A Culture Of Safeguarding In Sport, Judith L. Komaki, Yetsa A. Tuakli-Wosornu

Publications and Research

The power-driven, win-at-all-costs milieu of many sport settings can create fertile ground for athlete victimization and abuse (Roberts et al., 2020). Victory can in fact be so sovereign that abusive coaches and staff are enabled and “even rewarded. . . in the name of winning” (Armour, 2020). Athlete abuse prevention therefore requires systemic cultural change (Letourneau et al., 2014; Rhind and Owusu-Sekyere, 2017). Thus far, however, enacting this idea has eluded organizations in sport (Mountjoy et al., 2016; Harris and Terry, 2019; Kerr et al., 2019; Rhind and Owusu-Sekyere, 2020) as well as in other settings (National Academies of Sciences, …

Data was obtained as part of an online survey sent out to P-MIG conference attendees at the 2017-2019 annual meetings (n=30). Participating institutions indicate that 25.9% have degrees called Physiology aligned with 28% being housed in a department of physiology, 75.9% are a Bachelor of Science program, 34.9% are affiliated with a College of Arts and Sciences, and 80% …

Virtual Games Meet Physical Playground: Exploring And Measuring Motivations For Live Esports Event Attendance, Haozhou Pu Mar 2021

Virtual Games Meet Physical Playground: Exploring And Measuring Motivations For Live Esports Event Attendance, Haozhou Pu

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

The spectacular rise of esports and its live events have drawn increasing interests from sport and leisure studies. Little information, however, is known on motives behind spectators’ attendance of esports events. Based on a mixed-method design consisting of data collected in cross-cultural settings, we developed and validated an eight-factor measurement scale related to the motives of attending live esports events. In this study, we contend that esports event creates a space where virtual and physical experience are mutually constituted. While motives found in traditional sports and event research are present in the current study, motives unique to esports events are …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The emergence of social media has sparked a lot of interest in academic libraries especially in the area of adoption. However, there appears to be limited knowledge on whether librarians’ generation differs in the adoption levels of social media specifically in the Southwestern, Nigeria. In a bid to carrying out this focus, this study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population comprised seventy-nine (79) librarians from eight academic libraries. The total enumeration sampling technique was used to study all respondents for the study. A self-structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Data gathered were analysed using descriptive (frequency, …

Metabolic And Body Composition Changes After Skin Reduction Surgery Following Massive Weight Loss, Patrick S. Harty, Richard Allen Stecker Mr., Grant M. Tinsley, Chad Kerksick

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

CASE HISTORY: The patient is a 30-year-old woman who lost more than 200 pounds over the course of several years through a combination of bariatric surgery, diet, and exercise. Generally, losing more than 100 pounds leaves patients with significant amounts of excess tissue and loose skin that must be corrected via skin reduction plastic surgery to support aesthetic and functional outcomes. This excess tissue also contributes to abnormal body composition results and could potentially influence resting metabolic rate. This case study examined the implications of skin reduction surgery on measures of body composition and resting metabolism. The patient presented …

Perceptions Of Water Competencies, Drowning Risk And Aquatic Participation Among Older Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran Feb 2021

Perceptions Of Water Competencies, Drowning Risk And Aquatic Participation Among Older Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

New Zealand has an aging population and, despite falling drowning tolls in all other age groups (WSNZ, 2019c), older adults have continued to drown in both increasing numbers and proportion. The reasons for this are not well understood since very little drowning research has focused on older people. A water safety survey (N = 389) seeking information on older adults’ aquatic recreational practices and perceptions of safety was conducted at the end of the summer season, 2019. Most adults (86%, n = 335) reported some aquatic activity in the previous year, but those aged 65+ years (66%) were significantly …

The Lifeguard Rescue Reporting System: Survey Results From A Collaborative Data Collection Method, William D. Ramos, Roy Fielding, Kristina R. Anderson, Peter G. Wernicki Md

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Several water safety organizations have attempted to improve reporting regarding lifeguard actions in order to better understand the characteristics of successful, non-fatal rescues. In 2003, a collective effort initiated the Lifeguard Rescue Reporting System, an online survey distributed to lifeguards and facility managers across the United States and Canada to better understand rescue actions performed in pools/spas, water parks, and open water areas. After seven years of data collection, the online survey accumulated data reflecting 1,676 rescue actions, collecting information including location, victim characteristics and outcome, rescuer characteristics and strategies, and other general circumstances. Descriptive results indicated that at least …

Ginger Root Extract Increases Mitochondrial Fission And Mitophagy In Diabetes Mellitus Rats, Casey Appell, Nigel Jiwan, Chwan-Li Shen, Hui-Ying Luk

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Diabetes (DM) is accompanied by mitochondrial dysfunction (i.e., mitochondria fission/fusion and mitophagy) in which result in an accumulation of damaged mitochondria and further impaired insulin resistance. Ginger root extract (GRE) has been shown to improve mitochondrial biogenesis and decreased respiratory coefficient in DM model, however, the effect of GRE on the basal mitochondria fission/fusion and mitophagy state is limited. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of GRE on mitochondria fission/fusion and mitophagy transcript abundance in rats with diabetes induced by high-fat diet (HFD) with streptozotocin (STZ). METHOD: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: standard diet (STD; n=11), HFD with …
