In Defense Of Occupational Licensing: A Legal Practitioner's Perspective, Jeffrey P. Gray Jan 2021

In Defense Of Occupational Licensing: A Legal Practitioner's Perspective, Jeffrey P. Gray

Campbell Law Review

In recent years, occupational licensing boards have come under fire from critics across the nation. Much of the recent critique of occupational licensing boards has centered on the breadth of power these boards hold and the supposed lack of state supervision over them. And yet, occupational licensing boards in North Carolina are subject to significant state supervision. This Article seeks to rebut arguments of no state supervision over occupational licensing boards. This Article’s primary goal is to provide a cogent defense of occupational licensing boards in an effort to show their validity and legitimacy.

Fedaccounts: Digital Dollars, John Crawford, Lev Menand, Morgan Ricks Jan 2021

Fedaccounts: Digital Dollars, John Crawford, Lev Menand, Morgan Ricks

Faculty Scholarship

We are entering a new monetary era. Central banks around the world – spurred by the development of privately controlled digital currencies as well as competition from other central banks – have been studying, building, and, in some cases, issuing central bank digital currency (“CBDC”).

Although digital fiat currency is one of the hottest topics in macroeconomics and central banking today, the discussion has largely overlooked the most straightforward and appealing strategy for implementing a U.S. dollar-based CBDC: expanding access to bank accounts that the Federal Reserve already offers to a small, favored set of clients. These accounts consist of …

A Deeper Inquiry Into The Transitional Needs Of Student Veterans, Nathan Calvin Bridendolph Jr Jan 2021

A Deeper Inquiry Into The Transitional Needs Of Student Veterans, Nathan Calvin Bridendolph Jr

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous research revealed that veterans transitioning to post-secondary institutions have unique characteristics (PNPI, 2018; Wurster et al., 2013) and may suffer from a constellation of physical, psychological, and social problems that can impact their ability to perform to their full potential on campus (Ackerman et al., 2009; Alschuler & Yarab, 2016; Igielnik, 2019). Despite knowing the struggles student veterans (SVs) face when transitioning to campus, no studies were found that directly gain SVs’ input on what they believe will help their transition. The current study sought to gain a holistic perspective of SV needs by using the biopsychosocial model and …

This study examined the racial/ethnic differences in financial capability controlling for various factors focusing on the role of financial education. Furthermore, we investigated the contributing factors to clarify where such gap stems. Regression results using data from the 2018 U.S. National Financial Capability Study indicated that Whites had a higher level of financial capability across all indicators than other racial/ethnic minority groups. Respondents who participated in the financial education had a higher level of financial capability than those without financial education. Multiple sources, hours and quality of financial education were positively associated with the level of financial capability. Decomposition analyses …

Debtor Spaces: Austerity, Space, And Dispossession In Michigan’S Emergency Management System, Melissa Heil Jan 2021

Debtor Spaces: Austerity, Space, And Dispossession In Michigan’S Emergency Management System, Melissa Heil

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

In recent years, debt has become a major focus of geographic research as debt relations have become increasingly central to today’s financialized capitalist economy. This paper bridges two aspects of the debt literature: (1) the emergent literature on debt spatiality, which argues that space plays an active role in the creation and maintenance of debt relations, and (2) the broader literature examining processes of debt-driven dispossession (e.g., foreclosure, eviction, austerity, etc.). Recent literature in geography, led by Harker’s work on debt spaces, has argued that debt should not only be understood as a temporal relation (a promise of future labor) …

Why Aren't My Students Reading: Faculty & Student Research Unveiling The Hidden Curriculum Of Course Material Usage, Jayne R. Goode, Kerri K. Morris, Bradley Smith, J. Christopher Tweddle

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This reflective essay follows a faculty working group as they attempt to understand barriers to access to course materials through the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Through the workgroup’s research and collaboration with students in a problem-based learning course, the workgroup uncovered elements of the hidden curriculum in assumptions regarding course material procurement. The collaboration has served as the foundation for efforts to begin to transform the way that faculty on campus make use of textbooks and course materials in their courses. This transformation should make explicit to faculty that the utilization of course materials for all aspects of …

This article addresses the prevalence of colorism among the hair care narratives of African American female adolescents. Eleven interviews were conducted to explore the connection between hair and sense of self and self-esteem. During data collection and analysis, the theme surrounding colorism emerged, as many participants discussed its influence on hair, recalling traumatic hair and colorist experiences. This article focuses on the analysis of these narratives using the colorist-historical trauma framework. Three themes emerged: (1) colorist experiences; (2) perceptions of good hair; and (3) the influence of White beauty standards. These themes reflect how participants conceptualized the implications of colorism …

Capturing Behavior In Small Doses: A Review Of Comparative Research In Evaluating Thin Slices For Behavioral Measurement, Nora Murphy, Judith A. Hall

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Thin slices are used across a wide array of research domains to observe, measure, and predict human behavior. This article reviews the thin-slice method as a measurement technique and summarizes current comparative thin-slice research regarding the reliability and validity of thin slices to represent behavior or social constructs. We outline decision factors in using thin-slice behavioral coding and detail three avenues of thin-slice comparative research: (1) assessing whether thin slices can adequately approximate the total of the recorded behavior or be interchangeable with each other (representativeness); (2) assessing how well thin slices can predict variables that are different from the …

Media, Sports, And Society, Lawrence A. Wenner

Communication Studies Faculty Works

This chapter interrogates a research journey and the trajectory of study on media, sports, and society. Beginning with reflection on both stimulants to and motivations for this journey, the author makes a case for the necessity of interdisciplinarity in the socio-cultural study of mediated sport. Focusing on key theories, methods, and findings interwoven in his research agenda, the author summarizes key considerations in understanding (1) mediasport fan experiences, (2) dirt theory, commodification, and mega-events, (3) mediasport fan narratives, and (4) the mediasport interpellation. Moving to consideration of the larger state of play in media, sport, and society inquiry, the author …

Playing On The Communication And Sport Field: Dispositions, Challenges, And Priorities, Lawrence A. Wenner Jan 2021

Playing On The Communication And Sport Field: Dispositions, Challenges, And Priorities, Lawrence A. Wenner

Communication Studies Faculty Works

This chapter considers the origins, development, and epistemological contexts undergirding the study of communication and sport as an emergent and growing field of inquiry. Early in the chapter, the contexts underlying the development of studying sport in communication and media studies are considered and woven into a brief chronology of the area’s maturation towards disciplinary legitimacy. This is followed by an analysis of the challenges presented by competing and complementary interests at play in three disciplinary and epistemological dispositions seen in the study of communication and sport. The closing section of the chapter considers key challenges that need to be …

Whiteness, Discipline, And Educational Disadvantage: A Case For California Schools, Dow Drukker Jan 2021

Whiteness, Discipline, And Educational Disadvantage: A Case For California Schools, Dow Drukker

Master's Theses and Capstones

Over the last thirty years, the student population of schools in the United States have become increasingly more racially diverse, while teachers have remained predominantly white. During this same period, school disciplinary policies and practices have become increasingly punitive. Literature has shown that this shift disproportionately targets students of color. Behavior such as defiance and disruption are now offenses that warrant the suspension or expulsion of a student. These behaviors are subjective in nature. In using their discretion to identify defiance and disruption, teachers may administer discipline in a racially unequal manner. While prior research has documented the emergence of …

Truth As A Victim: The Challenge Of Anti-Trafficking Education In The Age Of Q, Bond Benton, Daniela Peterka-Benton

College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

The QAnon conspiracy threatens anti-trafficking education because of its broad dissemination and focus on a range of myths about trafficking. These myths are rooted in historic and ongoing misinformation about abductions, exploitation, and community threats. This article examines the extent of QAnon’s co-optation of human trafficking discourses and evaluates its connection to trafficking myths, particularly related to gender, race, class, and agency. From this perspective, the article considers how anti-trafficking education can respond to these myths and build a pedagogy in the age of Q.

Addressing The Needs Of Individuals With Upper Limb Loss/Difference(S) (Ull/D) Through Expansion Of A Virtual Support Group To Include Intimate Relationships, Samantha A. Pagano

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"Individuals with upper limb loss/difference(s) (ULL/D) are typically outnumbered by individuals with lower limb loss by a 1:4 ratio (Latour, 2019). This often results in a lack of access to resources, especially those related to secondary physical and psychosocial conditions. In order to better address the gap in resources experienced by the UL L/D population, five Doctor of Occupational Therapy students at Western New England University expanded a virtual support group for individuals with UL L/D, originally piloted by Debra Latour, PP-OTD, M. Ed., OTR/L, as part of their Doctoral Experiential Capstone Project. The program, titled Unlimbited Wellness, aimed to …

Two-Dimensional Machiavellianism And The Use Of Coping Strategies, Lily Kedzuch Jan 2021

Two-Dimensional Machiavellianism And The Use Of Coping Strategies, Lily Kedzuch

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Once thought to be a unidimensional personality trait, recent research has advanced a two-dimensional model of Machiavellianism (Monaghan et al., 2020). The views dimension is associated with a cynical worldview whereas the tactics dimension relates to a willingness to engage in interpersonal exploitation for personal gain. The purpose of this study was to explore how these two dimensions are associated with coping strategies (Carver, 1997) in response to interpersonal stress as well as differences in life satisfaction (Kobau et al., 2010) and happiness (Lyubormirsky & Lepper, 1999). The sample (N = 253) was collected through Prolific, an online paid research …
