An Examination Of The Opt Out Movement In New York State, Selene M. Cammer-Bechtold Aug 2025

An Examination Of The Opt Out Movement In New York State, Selene M. Cammer-Bechtold

Dissertations - ALL

Public state education systems are required by federal law to assess student learning in order to receive certain federal funding for the state’s education system. Typically, the metric are standardized testing regimes. New York State is no exception and requires students in grades 3-8 to take annual English Language Arts and Mathematics exams to meet that requirement. However, New York State is a unique case, as it has the highest Opt Out rate, or noncompliance on taking the exams, in the country. While the majority of the literature on the Opt Out Movement has focused on who is more likely …

State Nationalism, Islamic Movements, And Islamist Parties: Exploring The Linkages, Raza Habib Raja Aug 2025

State Nationalism, Islamic Movements, And Islamist Parties: Exploring The Linkages, Raza Habib Raja

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation investigates the variation in the electoral mobilization of Islamist parties in Pakistan, Tunisia, and Turkey using comparative historical analysis. These Muslim-majority countries (MMCs) have experienced free and fair elections, yet the electoral success of Islamist parties varies considerably among them. In Turkey and Tunisia, Islamist parties have mobilized successfully and won power at the national level, whereas in Pakistan, they have largely underperformed. This study argues that the root cause of these differences lies in the historical decisions made by the political elite regarding the role of Islam in fostering nationalism and state-building at the time of independence. …

An Empirical Examination Of Student Dropout In A Diverse Campus Environment, Zahid Iqbal, Shekar Shetty Aug 2025

An Empirical Examination Of Student Dropout In A Diverse Campus Environment, Zahid Iqbal, Shekar Shetty

Southwestern Business Administration Journal

Abstract

This study expands on the existing literature by examining dropout behavior of minority college students. Specifically, the study compares determinants of retention for large ethnic student groups in the College of Business of an ethnically-diverse college campus. The dynamics of retention and progression are not known for college campuses with large representations of ethnic students. Our empirical findings show that college GPA explains student dropout for all ethnic groups. We find evidence of a positive association between dropout and male students for African-American and White ethnicities. Additionally, dropout has a positive association with online classes for African-Americans and Hispanics …

A Complex Border: Intractability And The Physical Roots Of Discursive Legitimations In Cyprus, Hilmi Ulas Aug 2025

A Complex Border: Intractability And The Physical Roots Of Discursive Legitimations In Cyprus, Hilmi Ulas

Peace Studies Faculty Articles and Research

The Cypriot conflict is one of the most intractable conflicts of the modern era, and the collapse of complexity among the actors in the conflict—mainly the Republic of Cyprus, North Cyprus, and Turkey—appears to be the main cause of the continued “no war, no peace” state. Subsequent socio-psychological self-organization among these actors then produces conflict-perpetuating feedback loops and dynamics. These dynamics include identity narratives, narratives of “the other,” and narratives of the nature of the conflict, which, at the grassroots level, can legitimize ongoing engagement in the conflict, whereas peace is painted as an undesirable and undeserved/unjust compromise. Given this, …

A Religious Etiology Of Genito-Pelvic Pain And Pain With Penetration, Emily L. Carlson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Pelvic pain during penetration (PPDP) has been described using various diagnostic terms, including vaginismus, dyspareunia, and vulvodynia. The most recent and comprehensive classification is Genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder (GPPPD) which is characterized by psychological distress associated with pain during or in anticipation of vaginal penetration (DSM-5-TR; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022). The etiology of PPDP is multifactorial, involving a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and relational factors. Religious and cultural influences may play a significant role in shaping individuals’ experiences of sexual pain. This study investigated the etiology of PPDP in relation to the religious influences among women raised in Judeo-Christian …

Special Status Of African Regional States In The International Seabed Authority, Felicia Ratnasari Soedjianto, Marten Hanura, Muhammad Arief Zuliyan Aug 2025

Special Status Of African Regional States In The International Seabed Authority, Felicia Ratnasari Soedjianto, Marten Hanura, Muhammad Arief Zuliyan

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Through the mandate of UNCLOS 1982 and the 1994 Agreement, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) exists as a regulatory regime for activities in the international seabed area. Interestingly, African countries are privileged over other countries by occupying the most seats on the ISA Council. In addition, the ISA's commitment to supporting the blue economy through the Africa Deep Seabed Resources project also accentuates the privileges of African countries. African countries' technological, financial, and knowledge capacity is minimal in seabed mining. Apart from this problem, this research aims to analyse the fundamental reasons for the ISA's actions that give privileges to …

The Label Of Low Effort: Exploring Teachers’ Effort-Related Language, Meritocratic Beliefs, And Attribution-Based Responsibility Assignments, Kelly A. Larson Aug 2025

The Label Of Low Effort: Exploring Teachers’ Effort-Related Language, Meritocratic Beliefs, And Attribution-Based Responsibility Assignments, Kelly A. Larson

Doctorate in Education

Educators play an integral role in the academic success and future educational trajectory of their students. Yet, in an unjust, hyper-individualistic education system grounded in a meritocratic myth, even the most well-intentioned teachers have a tendency to explain students’ underperformance through a self-protective, deficit-based attribution process that puts the onus of academic achievement almost entirely on students and their families. This recursive cycle is especially damaging for students who do not exhibit effort in normalized, Eurocentric ways. This study examines how teachers’ attributions and responsibility assignments for students’ perceived low-effort behavior are shaped by inequitable meritocratic beliefs and reinforced through …

Parents’ Perceptions Of The Influence Of Interpersonal Trauma On Children’S Academic Achievement In Low Socioeconomic Families During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Brandi Walker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified the challenges faced by families from low socioeconomic (SES) backgrounds regarding their children’s academic development. Students during this time experienced disruptions in their academic development, further hindering their educational progress. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore parents’ perceptions of how interpersonal trauma and SES challenges impacted their elementary-age children’s academic achievement during the pandemic. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory served as the theoretical foundation, offering a framework to understand how environmental factors shaped children’s experiences and academic development. Data were gathered through semistructured interviews with eight parents from low-SES backgrounds. Content analysis of …

How Public Education Policies Drive Economic Growth In Asean : An Analysis Of Resource Allocation Theory, Human Capital Accumulation, And Structural Transformation Pathways, Jiacheng Li

Lingnan Theses (Doctoral degree)

This study examines how public education policies influence economic growth across ASEAN nations through the theoretical lens of resource allocation theory. While ASEAN has maintained an average GDP growth rate of 5.1% since 2000, significant disparities between high-growth and low-growth economies persist in educational investment and outcomes.

Methodologically, the study conducts empirical studies and integrates panel data (1990–2023) across ten member states that underwent spatial econometrics analysis. It dissects three transmission pathways: (1) human capital accumulation enhancing labor productivity via skill development; (2) educational stratification driving industrial restructuring; and (3) spatial spillovers facilitating cross-border knowledge diffusion. These mechanisms are operationalized …

Pathways To Educational Equality : Insights From China’S Higher Education Stratification And Social Stratification, Qingbin Xu

Lingnan Theses (Doctoral degree)

It is essential to examine the equity of the newly established higher education system and elucidate the reasons and consequences of stratification within the context of China’ higher education and social hierarchy, because in the wake of massification and expansion, China’s higher education system has been seeing alterations in stratification patterns. Through the Status Attainment Model and the Wisconsin Model, this study employs a mixed-method approach that integrates quantitative and qualitative techniques to assess higher education and social inequality in mainland China. The findings indicate that the conventional status attainment model, when subjected to structural equation modelling analysis, reveals that …

Student Works (2020-2029)

Studies on heritage food have gained widespread attention, driven by concerns about its sustainability within the community and its viability as a commodity for economic development. While often associated with tourism, heritage food is fundamentally rooted in local nutritional culture, reflecting the uniqueness of tradition amidst global food variations, particularly in urban settings. This study examines the development, commodification, and consumption of Malay heritage food in Kuala Lumpur using a mixed-methods approach that integrates systematic literature research, observation, interviews, and surveys with key stakeholders, including business actors, experts, practitioners, and consumers. Findings reveal that the development of Malay heritage food …

Precarious Privilege: Exploring The Intersection Of White Teacher Habitus And Social Justice In International Schools, Kevin L. Workman Aug 2025

Precarious Privilege: Exploring The Intersection Of White Teacher Habitus And Social Justice In International Schools, Kevin L. Workman

Dissertations

This qualitative study explored the underresearched phenomenon of White teacher allyship within an emergent diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) movement in international schools. Gaining momentum in 2020 as a digital, postcolonial counterstory, the movement exposed structural inequities and racism across the international school ecosystem. Applying an antiracist reading of Bourdieu’s (1977) theory of practice, the study analyzes how White teachers (n = 8) from diverse international contexts understand, experience, and assess their participation in DEIJ activities. Thematic analysis of interview data corroborated the digital voices, explicitly identifying White supremacy as a key force shaping the field’s doxa. The study …

Archival Articulations Of Belonging: Resistance, Reimagination, And Resilience In School And In Incarceration, Caroline Hastings

Dissertations

Belonging is a universal desire, providing purpose and comfort, that supports our ability to survive and triumph through difficulty. A lack of belonging can impact one’s likelihood of becoming incarcerated. In turn, incarceration stigmatizes individuals and disrupts connections with family, friends, and community members. This study of individual’s experiences of belonging analyzed reflective written accounts created during incarceration. This phenomenological qualitative examination of belonging for formerly and currently incarcerated individuals, disproportionately people of color and individuals with disabilities, sought to deepen our understanding of belonging as a force in their lives. In the United States, high rates of incarceration impact …

Small Scale Analysis Of Urban Air Quality And Public Health In London, Uk, Provides Insights For Targeted Interventions, Alan Smith, Tim Daley

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Understanding the impact of scale and zonation is critical for accurately assessing population health in relation to air quality and demographic data. Using existing census geographies, we analyse spatial clustering and statistical associations across different census scales, focussing on vulnerable sociodemographic groups and temporal exposure patterns. This study aims to assess how different spatial resolutions affect the strength and interpretation of associations between air pollution, sociodemographic variables, and self-reported health. It also evaluates whether finer-scale, health-need-based zoning provides a more accurate basis for public health analysis. Exposure to higher PM2.5 concentrations, and having an undrlying disability, or long-term illness shows …

Well, That’S Interesting: “Minnesota Nice” And Its Impact On Rural Community-Building, Aspen Ireland

Summer Research Showcase

I have been living in Morris for two years now, and have been able to find and develop a strong community of like minded people for myself. However, evidence from international students and immigrants suggests that my experience is not universal. The term “Minnesota Nice” is a concept that helps us unpack these differences in experience. Characterized by outward politeness and a cheerful attitude masking emotional reservedness and an aversion to conflict, Midwest Nice can help people get along but can also create a sense of exclusivity. Drawing from literature, historical and archival research, popular culture, digital media, and cultural …

Atomic Offsets: Nuclear Policy Shifts For Arctic States In The Wake Of Moscow’S Special Military Operation, Molly Wise, Lillian Hussong

Space and Defense

This article examines how Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has intensified nuclear reliance among Arctic states. Applying a new framework of “conventional-nuclear vulnerability,” it analyzes the nuclear policy shifts of Sweden, Finland, and Russia. The findings show that Finland and Sweden pursued NATO membership to secure nuclear guarantees, while Russia adopted riskier nuclear signaling and lowered thresholds for nuclear use. These developments highlight the growing centrality of nuclear deterrence in Arctic security, underscoring the challenges for U.S. and NATO policymakers in balancing assurance and deterrence in a volatile regional environment.
