Bearing Witness To The Beauty Of Enactive Kinesthetic Empathy Across Species In Canine-Human And Equine-Human Interactions: Participant-Observation Ethnographies, Donna A. Carlyle, Pamela Graham
Bearing Witness To The Beauty Of Enactive Kinesthetic Empathy Across Species In Canine-Human And Equine-Human Interactions: Participant-Observation Ethnographies, Donna A. Carlyle, Pamela Graham
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Through observations from ethnographic fieldwork the authors seek to highlight the significance of equine-human and canine-human communication to the fields of both human- animal studies and eudaimonia theories of human well-being. As we shared our insights through academic conversations about our respective research findings, we realized that both studies explore the enigmatic and significant concept of kinesthetic empathy in communication and relationship building between horses and young people and between dogs and young children. The canine-child setting (Study A) is a primary school and classroom in which the children voted to share their environment with a school dog, and the …
Eat Like A White Man: Meat-Eating, Masculinity, And Neo-Colonialism, Saphronia Carson
Eat Like A White Man: Meat-Eating, Masculinity, And Neo-Colonialism, Saphronia Carson
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Gender Studies scholarship has argued that one significant way contemporary hegemonic masculinities are constructed and reinforced is through meat consumption. Conversely, plant-based diets such as veganism and vegetarianism are considered feminine. This paper builds on an emerging body of research that traces this gendering of meat and plant-based diets to British colonialism in India. Drawing on ecofeminist and postcolonial theory, it shows how British colonizers feminized Indian dietary cultures, specifically Hindu vegetarian diets, to reinforce their own sense of masculinity. Through critical analyses of marketing and media, it demonstrates how these colonial gendered food images continue to populate contemporary imaginations. …

Misericordia’S Personal Effectiveness Program (Pep): Virtual Wellness, Melissa Madrangca
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Misericordia offers care and services to individuals with developmental and physical disabilities. Within Misericordia is their Personal Effectiveness Program (PEP), which helps their residents lead meaningful lives. PEP provides structured, person-centered programs. And despite the barriers posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this community has thrived through their virtual programming. This presentation outlines the virtual projects that I created and facilitated during my year-long internship. Implemented projects include an adaptive photography club, "health corner", and book club, all centered around wellness. Within this presentation, I also reflect on my experience with the Social Justice Internship through Loyola's Center for Experiential Learning.

Transgender Ce For Ot Practitioners And Students, Kalie Fagins
Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
Introduction/Rational:
The population of individuals that identify outside of the gender binary social constructs is increasing and becoming more visible. Therefore, it is important for healthcare practitioners to be well equipped to provide affirming care for patients in the LGBTQIA+ community. Findings show that transgender patients have higher incidences of negative experiences with healthcare workers despite healthcare workers having more affirming attitudes. Other studies found healthcare practitioners lacked training and knowledge to provide the best quality of care.
Objectives:
To educate occupational therapy practitioners on gender affirming care related to daily activities, health, and well-being.
Method/approach:

Relationship Of Undergraduate Nursing Students' Emotional Intelligence And Other Factors To Ati-Nclex-Rn Comprehensive Predictor Examination Performance, Sarah Y. Jimenez
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Background/Problem: Nursing schools prepare nursing students to provide competent and safe nursing care and to pass NCLEX-RN for professional licensure. The ATI-NCLEX-RN Comprehensive Predictor Examination from Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) has been used to predict the likelihood of passing NCLEX-RN on the first attempt. Emotional intelligence (EI), critical thinking (CT), and resilience contribute to academic performance and may influence test performance.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine significant predictors of ATI-NCLEX-RN Comprehensive Predictor Examination test performance among the variables of EI, CT, and resilience among undergraduate senior nursing students.
Hypothesis: There will be an association between …

Through the completion of a doctoral capstone experience, an entry-level occupational therapy doctoral student is able to further develop advanced skills. The doctoral capstone experience is during the student’s last semester in the program and is 16 weeks long. The doctoral capstone experience consists of both a culminating project and the experience itself. The capstone project is “comprised of a literature review, needs assessment, goals/objectives, and an evaluation plan based on specific focus areas” (ACOTE, 2020). The Nova Southeastern University Entry-Level Doctor of Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone Manual states that “the goal of the doctoral capstone project and experience is …

Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are early childhood traumas such as abuse, neglect or household dysfunction that can cause chronic physical and mental health problems across the lifespan. Approximately 61% of the adults in the United States have experienced ACEs. The prevalence of ACEs among nurses is at least comparable to population prevalence, and rates may be higher in subpopulations of individuals who work in helping professions. The stressful and highly interpersonal nature of nursing work may exacerbate and compound the health impacts of a nurse’s underlying ACEs, affecting not only the nurse’s health, but also his or her work …

The ELL classroom is incredibly diverse in many ways. Not only is it possible for many different countries and multiple races to be represented, but each student comes to the classroom with experiences unique to them and what has happened in their life. Care needs to be taken that we treat them as individuals and support them, in whatever way they need, to be successful and integral parts of the community. This is especially true for refugee and newcomer students. Like other ELL students, they are faced with trying to learn class materials without a full grasp of the language …

Child trafficking has been reported in all 50 states and affects more than 2 million children each year (Guardian Group, 2021). Involvement in human trafficking at a young age induces trauma that has a lasting effect on the victim’s personality and coping skills. A review of literature confirmed a need for more support of the use of occupational therapy with sex trafficking survivors. Despite support for the implementation of occupational therapy in similar trauma populations like domestic violence, homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder, and disaster survivors, there is limited literature supporting the use of OT with human trafficking survivors (Gorman & …

OBJECTIVE: Integration of general medical care and mental health care is a high priority for individuals with serious mental illnesses because of their high risk of morbidity and early mortality. The Bridge is a peer-led, health navigator intervention designed to improve access to and use of health care and self-management of medical services by individuals with serious mental illnesses. This study expands on a previous study in which the authors examined participants' self-reported outcomes from a 12-month randomized controlled trial of the Bridge. In the study reported here, Medicaid data were used to assess the impact of the intervention on …
