Organizing At A Distance, Teresa Mooney, Teresa Mooney

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

As a member of the 2020-2021 Social Justice Internship cohort, I had the opprotunity to be an intern with ONE Northside. This fall I worked with the Economic Justice Team and their campaign for the "Fair Tax" in Illinois. This challenged me to understand the current tax law of Illinois and how it impacts Chicago. After its loss and into the spring, I lead a team in research and constituent outreach to find what the next long-term campaign ONE Northside should invest in. All of this was done through phone calls, emails, and virtual meetings; a major transition and challenge …

Identifying Patient Strengths Instruments And Examining Their Relevance For Chronic Disease Management: A Systematic Review, Kurt C. Stange

Faculty Scholarship

What is already known on this topic? Chronic disease management often focuses on what is wrong with patients rather than recognizing their strengths and resources. However, studies show the value of emphasizing personal strengths to improve outcomes. What is added by this report? How instruments evaluate personal strengths varies, making it especially difficult when determining the use of instruments in clinical populations. This systematic review defines the heterogeneity of constructs that research has used to examine personal strengths as well as the reliability and validity of strengths-related scales. What are the implications for public health practice? Understanding the value of …

Professional Confidence In The Work Place, Tahelah E. Noel Apr 2021

Professional Confidence In The Work Place, Tahelah E. Noel

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Self-confidence is something that can change quite regularly depending on the setting. Studies have shown that those in a familiar environment or group tend to feel more confident than those in new environments. Working and professional environments can change the way others perceive themselves. This study aims to explore ways to increase professional confidence in a working environment. By using a single-subject design, data was collected by the subject for eight weeks. During the first two weeks, the study took a questionnaire that assessed confidence using a Likert Scale questionnaire without using any interventions. For the next six weeks, the …

This study aims to explore possible ways to increase feelings of satisfaction with body image. Using a single-subject design, the study collected data from the subject over a period of eight weeks. Before beginning the intervention, the subject answered a short questionnaire that assessed body satisfaction …

Online Instructors' Use Of The Cognitive Theory Of Multimedia Learning Design Principles: A Mixed Methods Investigation, Thomas Pantazes

Literacy Student Work

The use of digital video in online education is increasing alongside the growth of online learning in higher education in the United States driven in part by the COVID-19 pandemic (Bétrancourt & Benetos, 2018; McCormack, 2020; Seaman, et al, 2018). The study of digital instructional video is still at an early stage (Chorianopoulos, 2018) and current research has examined students and not instructors (Kay, 2012; Pan, et al, 2012). There are no studies solely focused on higher education instructors’ perspectives of digital video use for instruction (Kay, 2012). The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study (QUAN à qual) …

Social Work (Undergraduate) Student Work

Thorndike included emotional intelligence (EI) when he defined social intelligence (SI) (Sharma, 2008) due to the influence of social and cognitive functions on SI and EI (Schutte et al., 1998). Salovey and Mayer later developed a Four-Branch Model for EI including the following skills: 1) perceiving/identifying emotions, 2) integrating emotions into thought processes, 3) understanding emotions and 4) managing emotions. A meta-analysis on the construct of EI revealed many available methods for evaluating the presence and extent of EI such as the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory and the Wong and Law EI Scale. Cultivating Resilience In Lgbtq+ College Students Through Mindfulness-Based Practices, Luke A. Madden Apr 2021

Cultivating Resilience In Lgbtq+ College Students Through Mindfulness-Based Practices, Luke A. Madden

Masters Projects

Research shows LGBTQ+ college students experience lower mental and emotional well-being than their heterosexual, cisgender peers despite growing social acceptance. Research also indicates these disparities result from excess stress LGBTQ+ individuals experience due to the stigmatization of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Yet, LGBTQ+ college students continue to show up as their authentic selves in various campus settings, demonstrating a sense of resilience in the face of adversity that is characteristic of the broader LGBTQ+ community. As the number of students seeking or utilizing campus mental health resources increases, it is critical to provide vulnerable populations with resources and …

Managing Polypharmacy In Older Adults With Cancer Across Different Healthcare Settings., Andrew Whitman, Paige Erdeljac, Caroline Jones, Nicole Pillarella, Ginah Nightingale Pharmd, Bcop

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

The care of older patients with cancer is becoming increasingly complex. Common challenges for this population include management of comorbidities, safe transitions of care, and appropriate medication use. In particular, polypharmacy-generally defined as the regular use of five or more medications-and inappropriate medication use can lead to adverse effects and poor outcomes in older adults with cancer, including falls, hospital readmissions, cognitive impairment, poor adherence to essential medications, chemotherapy toxicity, and increased mortality. Managing polypharmacy across different cancer care settings is often challenging. Providers face barriers to safe and successful medication management that may include lack of time, absence of …

Economic Stress Among Low Income Latino Adolescent Fathers: An Application Of The Vulnerability-Stress-Adaptation Model, Diana Cedeño, Autumn M. Bermea, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews

Social Work Faculty Publications

Latino youth are more likely to live under the poverty line and to become adolescent parents. Although research exists examining adolescent mothers, less is known about adolescent fathers, particularly Latino adolescent fathers. Much of what does exist uses a deficit lens, as opposed to one of strength and resilience. Although adolescent fathers sometimes do struggle in their transition to fatherhood, it is critical to understand the positive ways in which they adapt. The present study uses in-depth interviews and applies the vulnerability-stress-adaptation (VSA) model to understand parental adaptation processes among a sample of low-income Latino adolescent fathers (N = …

Effectiveness Of An Online Intervention Combating Mental Health Stigma On Adolescent Help-Seeking Behaviors, Chelsea Krayecki

Mental health stigma has been shown to be a barrier to seeking help for mental health concerns. This is especially true for adolescents due to important developmental characteristics. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2021), depression is one of the major causes of mental health concerns and disability among adolescents. In addition, the WHO (2021) also states that mental health conditions account for 16% of global burden of illness in people ages 10-19-years-old. The current pandemic has only increased these concerns, as social, emotional, and mental well-being has been impacted by the pandemic (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, …
