Undergraduate Student Attitudes About Search Data Privacy In Academic Libraries: A Qualitative Research Study, Laura Gariepy Jan 2021

Undergraduate Student Attitudes About Search Data Privacy In Academic Libraries: A Qualitative Research Study, Laura Gariepy

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose and goals

This paper presents the findings of a qualitative study on undergraduate students’ attitudes about search data privacy in academic libraries, and their preferences for how librarians should handle information about what they search for, borrow, and download. This is an important topic due to the increasingly data-driven nature of assessment in higher education, contrasted with libraries’ professional commitment to privacy which has historically limited the amount of data collected about student library use. Although the literature is rich with evidence of librarians’ commitment to user privacy, very few studies address user perspectives on this matter.

The central …

International Journal of Peace Studies

Mexico is one of the least peaceful countries in the world. Peace, however, is not limited to the absence of violence for it includes many other aspects related to attitudes, institutions, and structures in a society (IEP, 2021). In this regard, the municipality of Ecatepec in the State of Mexico is an illuminating case study not only for the absence of conditions for structural peace, but also for the impact this has on the perceptions and conceptions of its residents. This paper presents the results of qualitative research carried out in Ecatepec at the request of a dialogue group for …

So What, Now What? Using Social Media Activism To Inform Power-Conscious Prevention Of Gender-Based Violence, Andrea R. Thyrring Jan 2021

So What, Now What? Using Social Media Activism To Inform Power-Conscious Prevention Of Gender-Based Violence, Andrea R. Thyrring

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We will not end gender-based violence by responding to it. Experts and national organizations agree that effective primary prevention programs are essential to stopping harmful behaviors before they start (DeGue et al, 2014; American College Health Association, 2016; American College Health Association, 2018; Townsend, 2017; Schneider & Hirsch, 2018; McMahon et al, 2019), so much so that primary prevention to address gender-based violence on college campuses has been mandated by state and federal policy (SB 19-007, 2019; Institutional Security Policies and Crime Statistics, 2020). In order to be effective, primary prevention programs should be tailored to the community in which …

Well-Being In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: 2021 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Heather Akin, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy, Timothy Meyer, Steven A. Schulz Jan 2021

Well-Being In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: 2021 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Heather Akin, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy, Timothy Meyer, Steven A. Schulz

Nebraska Rural Poll

This year, rural Nebraskans gave similar assessments of their current situation as they did last year. However, their optimism about their future is slightly lower than last year. And, this year, more rural Nebraskans agree that people are powerless to control their own lives as compared to last year.

Residents of the North Central region are the regional group most likely to believe they will be better off ten years from now. And, residents of both the North Central and Panhandle regions are more likely than residents of other regions of the state to believe they are much better off …

In The Shadow Of The Carceral State: The Evolution Of Feminist And Institutional Activism Against Sexual Violence, Bethany Munyeen Gen Jan 2021

In The Shadow Of The Carceral State: The Evolution Of Feminist And Institutional Activism Against Sexual Violence, Bethany Munyeen Gen

Honors Papers

This paper aims to trace the development of carceral feminist politics within United States institutions and feminist movements. I first define and describe Modern Carceral Feminism. I then argue that the development of Modern Carceral Feminism hinged on two different political moments: the development of a homogenous understanding of women’s oppression in the second wave feminist movement, and the rising political salience of racialized crime leading to punitive policies nationwide in the mid-to-late 1970s and 1980s. As a result, carceral feminist logics became pervasive within institutional and feminist activism against sexual violence. By the 1980s, reactionary feminist anti-violence movements, like …

"Gunba Control" The Constitutionality Of Semi-Automatic Robotic Weapons, Steve P. Szymanski Jan 2021

"Gunba Control" The Constitutionality Of Semi-Automatic Robotic Weapons, Steve P. Szymanski

Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology

This piece examines how the Second Amendment, and its recent jurisprudential standards would apply to foreseeable semi-autonomous weapons in the private sector. Following an analysis of the landmark Supreme Court decision in District of Columbia v. Heller and its progeny, the work forecasts how the rules would apply to a home defense drone designed to defend at the exterior of a domicile, an armed “digi-dog” designed for self-defense in public, and an armed robot (“Gunba”) designed to operate entirely within one’s domicile. Ultimately, it concludes that an semi-autonomous robot, designed for in-home use, could conceivably receive Second Amendment protection.

Political Partisanship And Female High School Students Who Physically Fight On Campus, Chance Honeycutt, Wayne L. Davis Jan 2021

Political Partisanship And Female High School Students Who Physically Fight On Campus, Chance Honeycutt, Wayne L. Davis

Lincoln Memorial University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Democrats and Republicans have different platforms on how to modify the social learning environment. According to the social learning theory, people learn to be aggressive through their life experiences. These experiences include personally observing the behaviors of others and modeling them. Personal behaviors are a product of learning the norms, values, and behaviors of society. Indeed, learning is a by-product of the interaction with others and is influenced by perceptions of the legal code. Because people experience culture conflict when they are exposed to different and opposing attitudes of acceptable behaviors, and because Democrats and Republicans have different attitudes toward …

Mimosa 2020/2021, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

Comprehensive Care: Harm Reduction And The Opioid Epidemic, Riley Tinlin Jan 2021

Comprehensive Care: Harm Reduction And The Opioid Epidemic, Riley Tinlin

Global Sustainable Development Projects

Comprehensive Care: Harm Reduction and the Opioid Epidemic aims to delve deeper into the realities of opioid addiction and assess proposed prevention strategies by acknowledging the driving factors (biological, psychological, and social) and consequences of opioid abuse. Intervention strategies are offered from various access points ranging from the federal to individual level. The research conducted has shown that all access points must be considered for the success of prevention and treatment efforts. The intent of this paper is to argue that the proposed strategies are necessary steps to be taken if the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3 (good health …

Out Of Place: Racialized Bodies At The Usa-Canada Border, Mobólúwajídìde D. Joseph Jan 2021

Out Of Place: Racialized Bodies At The Usa-Canada Border, Mobólúwajídìde D. Joseph

Undergraduate Review

The United States of America and Canada have a strong bilateral relationship that spans trade and national security concerns made necessary by their geographic proximity to one another. However, this is not one that equally impacts both states. This article maps out how marketization and securitization as dual forces shape much of Canada’s immigration policy framework. This framework is in response to American post-9/11 national security discourses which resulted in the reification of racial discrimination at the border (Crocker et al. 2007). It will do so by grounding these arguments in a theoretical framework that critically examines neoliberalism as the …

The Sharing Economy & The Platform Operator‐User‐Provider “Pup Model”: Analytical Legal Frameworks, Juan Jose Diaz-Granados, Benedict Sheehy

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The Sharing Economy and related platform technologies have disrupted work, consumption, and business in ways unimaginable even a decade ago. Creating great wealth and opportunity for some, the Sharing Economy has equally undermined job security and safety for many others. One challenge for regulators, legal advisors, and scholars is developing a rigorous analytical model for these related phenomena. We present the first comprehensive legal framework for distinguishing and analyzing the various components of the Sharing Economy and their interrelationships. Our analysis is based on contract law and property law, providing a delimitation within the Sharing Economy and platform technologies based …

Ocularcentrism And Deepfakes: Should Seeing Be Believing?, Katrina G. Geddes Jan 2021

Ocularcentrism And Deepfakes: Should Seeing Be Believing?, Katrina G. Geddes

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The pernicious effects of misinformation were starkly exposed on January 6, 2021, when a violent mob of protestors stormed the nation’s capital, fueled by false claims of election fraud. As policymakers wrestle with various proposals to curb misinformation online, this Article highlights one of the root causes of our vulnerability to misinformation, specifically, the epistemological prioritization of sight above all other senses (“ocularcentrism”). The increasing ubiquity of so-called “deepfakes”—hyperrealistic, digitally altered videos of events that never occurred—has further exposed the vulnerabilities of an ocularcentric society, in which technology-mediated sight is synonymous with knowledge. This Article traces the evolution of visual …
