A First Look Into Users’ Perceptions Of Facial Recognition In The Physical World, Sovantharith Seng, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen, Matthew Wright
Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications
Facial recognition (FR) technology is being adopted in both private and public spheres for a wide range of reasons, from ensuring physical safety to providing personalized shopping experiences. It is not clear yet, though, how users perceive this emerging technology in terms of usefulness, risks, and comfort. We begin to address these questions in this paper. In particular, we conducted a vignette-based study with 314 participants on Amazon Mechanical Turk to investigate their perceptions of facial recognition in the physical world, based on thirty-five scenarios across eight different contexts of FR use. We found that users do not have a …
Free Speech, Strict Scrutiny And A Better Way To Handle Speech Restrictions, Aaron Pinsoneault
Free Speech, Strict Scrutiny And A Better Way To Handle Speech Restrictions, Aaron Pinsoneault
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
When it comes to unprotected speech categories, the Roberts Court has taken an amoral and inaccurate approach. When the Court first created unprotected speech categories-- defined categories of speech that are not protected by the First Amendment-- it was unclear what rendered a category of speech unprotected. One school of thought argued that speech was unprotected if it provided little or no value to society. The other school of thought argued that speech was unprotected if it fell into a certain category of speech that was simply categorically unprotected. Then, in 2010, the Court strongly sided with the latter approach, …

Assessing Quantitative And Qualitative Approaches To Measure Program Outcomes In Human Service Organizations, Katrina Miller-Stevens, Zach Benevento-Zahner, Gabrielle L'Esperance, Jennifer Taylor, Mia Solberg
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
Leadership and organizational performance are interconnected, and in many cases the two go hand in hand. In nonprofit organizations, leaders are expected to guide and produce positive program outcomes that reflect the mission of the organization. One problem nonprofit leaders face, however, is how to measure program outcomes. What metrics, including impact measurement and performance measurement, of outcomes are available for nonprofit leaders to use? How does a leader know if his or her nonprofit is performing well? Are there any new frameworks or models to consider that may help with this problem? This paper addresses these questions by exploring …

Satellites & Hong Kong’S Independence: How The Trade Of Commercial Satellites Impacts Democracy Abroad And National Security At Home, Nicholas A. Beekhuizen
Satellites & Hong Kong’S Independence: How The Trade Of Commercial Satellites Impacts Democracy Abroad And National Security At Home, Nicholas A. Beekhuizen
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
Trade laws have always struck a balance between political freedom and national security. The trade of commercial communication satellites (“CCS”) between the United States and Hong Kong is no exception. Until recently, Hong Kong held a special trade designation that allowed it to purchase CCS from the United States. This exception from the strict ban on sales of certain advanced technologies to China was allowed due to Hong Kong’s semi-autonomous status. However, China’s continued encroachment on Hong Kong’s autonomy led the United States to strip Hong Kong of its special trade status and ban the free exchange of advanced technologies. …

BACKGROUND: The transition to parenting-that is, the journey from preconception through pregnancy and postpartum periods-is one of the most emotionally charged and information-intense times for individuals and families. While there is a developing body of literature on the use and impact of digital technology on the information behaviors of children, adolescents, and young adults, personal use of digital technology during the transition to parenting and in support of infants to 2 years of age is relatively understudied.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to enhance our understanding of the ways digital technologies contribute to the experience of the transition …

Destroying And Creating History: Butte, Montana’S Model City Program, 1968-1975, John C. Stefanek
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed the “Model Cities Act” into law. A part of Johnson’s Great Society, Model Cities was a national urban renewal program that sought to renew all aspects of society and included anything from the creation of parks and recreational facilities to increasing funding for senior citizens’ programs. My research examines the implementation of Model Cities in Butte, Montana. Whereas Model Cities was most visibly seen in metropolises like Detroit and Baltimore as a means to curtail riots and racial strife, the Butte program, in the words of the program’s director, James Murphy, wished to drag …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Risk factors for Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) include obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. Not only are these prevalent in the general US population, but they are also present at high rates in a specific subset responsible for public safety – firefighters. PURPOSE: The aim of the present study is to use logistic regression to predict the likelihood of occurrence of NAFLD in firefighters using a subset of health-related factors associated with common cardiometabolic risk factors. METHODS: Data were collected on 136 firefighters (128 males, 8 females; 36.3 ± 9.0 yrs; 95.7 ± 17.0 kg; 178.9 ± 7.4 cm; …

The Increased Exposure To Coronavirus (Covid-19) For Prisoners Justifies Early Release: And The Wider Implications Of This For Sentencing—Reducing Most Prison Terms Due To The Harsh Incidental Consequences Of Prison, Mirko Bagaric, Peter Isham, Jennifer Svilar
Pepperdine Law Review
The risk of coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading in prisons is especially acute. This has resulted in an unprecedented number of prisoners being released across the world – including many prisoners in the United States. From the health, social, and political perspectives, this is a sound approach. This is especially the situation in relation to older prisoners and those who have not been imprisoned for serious sexual and violent offenses. Despite the large number of prisoners that are being released, the United States will still have the largest prison population on earth—and by a large margin. However, the coronavirus pandemic and the …
When Is Police Interrogation Really Police Interrogation? A Look At The Application Of The Miranda Mandate, Paul Marcus
When Is Police Interrogation Really Police Interrogation? A Look At The Application Of The Miranda Mandate, Paul Marcus
Catholic University Law Review
Decades after the Supreme Court’s decision in Miranda v. Arizona, questions abound as to what constitutes interrogation when a suspect is in custody. What appeared a concise, uniform rule has, in practice, left the Fifth Amendment waters muddied. This article addresses a potential disconnect between law enforcement and the courts by analyzing examples of issues arising from Miranda’s application in an array of case law. Ultimately, it attempts to clarify an ambiguity by offering a standard for what conduct classifies as an interrogation.

Contested Places, Utility Pole Spaces: A Competition And Safety Framework For Analyzing Utility Pole Association Rules, Roles, And Risks, Catherine J.K. Sandoval
Catholic University Law Review
As climate change augurs longer wildfire seasons, safe, reliable, and competitive energy and communications markets depend on sound infrastructure and well-calibrated regulation. The humble wooden utility pole, first deployed in America in 1844 to extend telegraph service, forms the twenty-first century’s technological scaffold. Utility poles are increasingly contested places where competition, safety, and reliability meet. Yet, regulators and academics have largely overlooked the risks posed by century-old private utility pole associations in California, composed of private and public utility pole owners and some entities who attach facilities to utility poles. No academic articles have examined the rules, roles, and risks …
