In 2006, Khalia was arrested for a “low-level counterfeiting charge.” While Khalia was innocent and never convicted for the charged offense, she still had a criminal record. Because she was concerned that future employers would “view her as a thief,” she never applied to any of her dream jobs. But once Khalia’s arrest record was automatically sealed, she finally had enough confidence to send in a job application to a prestigious consulting firm, and was offered the position. Khalia believes that her newly sealed criminal record “means a future without judgment.” And this future without judgment was made possible …

Presidential And Policy Changes: The Effect On The U.S-Mexico Border, Eleni Jervis
Presidential And Policy Changes: The Effect On The U.S-Mexico Border, Eleni Jervis
2021 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Studies have been done concerning how policies from the Clinton administration up to the Obama administration effect the U.S-Mexico border. These studies typically do not compare administrations, but speak solely on certain differences. This research analyzes how each administration has created or changed policies regarding immigration, border control and building a border wall, and how these changes have effected, and continue to effect, politics surrounding the border.

The Language Of Pandemic Leaderships: Mapping Political Rhetoric During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Cristina J. Montiel, Joshua Uyheng, Erwine Dela Paz
Psychology Department Faculty Publications
This paper maps political rhetoric by national leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic. We identify and characterize global variations in major rhetorical storylines invoked in publicly available speeches (N = 1201) across a sample of 26 countries. Employing a text analytics or corpus linguistics approach, we show that state heads rhetorically lead their nations by: enforcing systemic interventions, upholding global unity, encouraging communal cooperation, stoking national fervor, and assuring responsive governance. Principal component analysis further shows that country-level rhetoric is organized along emergent dimensions of cultural cognition: an agency-structure axis to define the loci of pandemic interventions, and a hierarchy-egalitarianism axis …
Felony Disenfranchisement Through Rousseau's Social Contract, Blake Donohue
Felony Disenfranchisement Through Rousseau's Social Contract, Blake Donohue
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
In America, 1 in 13 African Americans are disenfranchised. The history of felony disenfranchisement, as well as the cases often used when discussing the constitutionality of felon disenfranchisement policies, aligns with the history of racial discrimination in the United States. The disproportionate impact of felony disenfranchisement laws on African Americans makes such laws invalid if analyzed through Rousseau’s social contract.

Control Over Skies: Survivability, Coverage, And Mobility Laws For Hierarchical Aerial Base Stations, Vishal Sharma, Navuday Sharma, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Haris Pervaiz

Aerial Base Stations (ABSs) have gained significant importance in the next generation of wireless networks for accommodating mobile ground users and flash crowds with high convenience and quality. However, to achieve an efficient ABS network, many factors pertaining to ABS flight, governing laws and information transmissions must be studied. In this article, multi-drone communications are studied in three major aspects, survivability, coverage, and mobility laws, which optimize the multitier ABS network to avoid issues related to inter-cell interference, deficient energy, frequent handovers, and lifetime. The article includes simulation results of hierarchical ABS allocations for handling a set of users over …

Nondelegation Of Major Questions, Clinton T. Summers
Nondelegation Of Major Questions, Clinton T. Summers
Arkansas Law Review
The Supreme Court has many tools at its disposal to address improper delegations of legislative power by Congress to the executive branch. Two of these tools are the nondelegation doctrine and the major questions doctrine. The nondelegation doctrine is a sledgehammer. Able to declare entire statutory provisions unconstitutional, its ability to do a lot of damage is perhaps the reason the Court never uses it. Indeed, the Court has only used it twice, both times in 1935. Although it’s old and rusty, the Court continues to keep it in the toolbox just in case. Since 1935, the Court has been …
