Embodied Fat Stigma And Health Beliefs About Exercise And Diet, Brie Scrivner
Embodied Fat Stigma And Health Beliefs About Exercise And Diet, Brie Scrivner
All ETDs from UAB
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how individuals navigate the cultural mandate for thinness, which pressured individuals to pursue weight loss through exercise and restrictive diets. While sustainable weight loss is not probable for the majority of people, there are still significant physical and mental health benefits to be had from engaging in regular, enjoyable movement. For many, physical activity is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. It can improve quality of life for individuals regardless of weight, body size, chronic illness, or disability. However, many fitness facilities focus on weight loss as the most essential goal …
Examining Approaches For Peacebuilding In Post-Conflict, Post-Good Northern Ireland, Evan Wiley Smith
Examining Approaches For Peacebuilding In Post-Conflict, Post-Good Northern Ireland, Evan Wiley Smith
All ETDs from UAB
In this paper, I broadly describe the timeline of the conflict in Northern Ireland, examine negative and positive peace approaches to peacebuilding including political (or consociationalism-based), human rights-based, and reconciliation-based methods, and present my own conclusions based on the literature review I conducted as to the most efficacious strategy for ensuring long-lasting peace in Northern Ireland. To do this, I reviewed numerous articles, papers, and chapters on the conflict in Northern Ireland, approaches in post-conflict reconciliation, and conflict resolution theory. Because the conflict in Northern Ireland ended approximately twenty years ago, much of the research referenced in this paper is …
Influence Of Race, Gender, Rurality, And Dyadic Health On Symptom Pattern Trajectories In Persons With Advanced Heart Failure, Macy Lynn Stockdill
Influence Of Race, Gender, Rurality, And Dyadic Health On Symptom Pattern Trajectories In Persons With Advanced Heart Failure, Macy Lynn Stockdill
All ETDs from UAB
Individuals living with heart failure experience a high symptom burden that must be addressed to improve their quality of life as well as the quality of life of their family caregivers. This is a challenging task as different situational and individual factors, including clinical/physiological factors and cultural factors, can affect an individual’s symptom experience. The purpose of this dissertation study was to examine existing symptom pattern trajectories and associated factors (sociodemographic, clinical/physiological characteristics, dyadic health) among a sample of under-resourced and racially diverse older adults with advanced heart failure living in the Deep South. This purpose was accomplished through four …
An Investigation Into The Effects Of Diet On Pain And Pain Disparities, Larissa Jane Strath
An Investigation Into The Effects Of Diet On Pain And Pain Disparities, Larissa Jane Strath
All ETDs from UAB
Chronic pain is one of the most common and disabling disorders in Westernsociety. Recently, it has been suggested that dietary quality may play a key role in the development and maintenance of pain. Additionally, diet differs between demographic groups, as does physiological differences in response to metabolites. We sought to explore 1) the central way in which diet influences pain sensitivity and 2) if dietary patterns affected various demographic groups differently. We first employed a rat model to observe diet-related changes in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. In the absence and presence of an injury, rats fed a …
Developing A Core Set Of Nursing-Sensitive Indicators For International Pediatric Oncology Nursing Practice, Courtney Erin Sullivan
Developing A Core Set Of Nursing-Sensitive Indicators For International Pediatric Oncology Nursing Practice, Courtney Erin Sullivan
All ETDs from UAB
Although nursing sensitive indicators (NSIs) have been developed to measure factors influencing nursing care quality and patient outcomes in general and in select specialty areas, a core set of NSIs for international pediatric oncology nursing practice does not exist. Quality nursing care delivery in pediatric oncology is essential to achieving optimal patient outcomes and closing the 50% survival gap between high-income and low- and middle-income countries. To enhance global childhood cancer outcomes influenced by nursing, this dissertation research was conducted with the purpose of developing a preliminary core set of NSIs for international pediatric oncology nursing that is important, actionable, …
Fashion, Models, And Intellectual Property, Andres Sawicki
Fashion, Models, And Intellectual Property, Andres Sawicki
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
In this Article, I revisit the impact of Professor Kal Raustiala and Professor Christopher Sprigman 's landmark article, The Piracy Paradox. Their work identified an empirical anomaly that was difficult to explain in light of the standard justification for intellectual property rights: although IP law does not grant meaningful exclusivity in novel fashion designs, the fashion industry invests significant resources developing those novel designs. To account for this anomaly, The Piracy Paradox shifted the focus from the supply side of innovation to the demand side. The standard justification emphasized that innovators face threats of copying that they cannot easily mitigate; …
Keynote Address, Jessica Litman
Keynote Address, Jessica Litman
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
The article explores the significant yet underappreciated role of Edward S. Rogers in shaping U.S. trademark law, particularly through his drafting of the Lanham Act. It argues that Rogers' deep involvement in the law's creation embedded a use-based, common law foundation that has proven durable but increasingly problematic in modern commerce. Despite Rogers' later evolution in thinking, his early drafting choices, influenced by historical legal frameworks, continue to shape the statute's quirks and limitations.
The Secrets Behind Reality Television Shows And Their Unconscionable Contracts, Stephanie Rimberg
The Secrets Behind Reality Television Shows And Their Unconscionable Contracts, Stephanie Rimberg
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
The note argues that reality television show contracts are often unconscionable due to the significant imbalance of power between producers and participants. These contracts frequently classify participants as independent contractors, despite their integral role in the show, and include provisions that are procedurally and substantively unfair, such as disclaimers of liability and arbitration clauses. The author contends that these contracts violate California contract law and public policy, advocating for participants to be reclassified as employees and for contracts to be amended to protect their rights.
Posthumanism: Creation Of 'New Men' Through Technological Innovation, George L. Mendz, Michael Cook
Posthumanism: Creation Of 'New Men' Through Technological Innovation, George L. Mendz, Michael Cook
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
he posthumanist project proposes directing the evolution of human beings by promoting their improvement through technological means to create a variety of entities that will have few or no common characteristics with current humans. Its agenda is extremely broad and this study mostly addresses enhancement of the human organism through genetic modification techniques. An overview of posthumanist values and a brief discussion of its philosophical background provide a framework to understand its ideals. Genetics and ethics are employed to assess some claims of the posthumanist program of creating evolved humans; in particular, the capabilities and limitations of techniques for somatic …

A Novel Boot Camp Program To Help Guide Personalized Exercise In People With Parkinson Disease, Josefa Domingos, John Dean, Travis M. Cruickshank, Katarzyna Śmiłowska, Júlio Belo Fernandes, Catarina Godinho
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Given the variety of exercise programs available for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), such individuals may struggle to make decisions about what exercise to perform. The objective of this study was to assess the usefulness, satisfaction, and preferences regarding participation in a PD-personalized educational and exercise boot camp program. Attendees participated in a four-day program consisting of exercise sessions, workshops, and social activities. We collected demographic and clinical information. We assessed satisfaction and preferences immediately after. At one-month follow-up, participants assessed usefulness and changes in exercise habits. Eight individuals diagnosed with PD, with a mean age of 59.5 ± 6.8 …
The Psychology Of Anxiety & Pain In Fibromyalgia, Anna Kharko
The Psychology Of Anxiety & Pain In Fibromyalgia, Anna Kharko
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Understanding pain is integral to understanding fibromyalgia, a chronic musculoskeletal pain condition of undetermined aetiology, and for which no single successful medical therapy exists. Most of what is known about fibromyalgia pain comes from psychophysical research of central sensitisation, a phenomenon of abnormally amplified pain following disruptions in the central nervous system. Anxiety has been long theorised to mediate this centralised pain, but its contribution is yet to be characterised. This thesis presents a multimodal investigation of pain perception under different manifestations of anxiety in both fibromyalgia-diagnosed and pain-free cohorts. Chapter 3 presented the findings from the first study in …
Investigating Stopping When Studying Novel Information, Abbie Ball
Investigating Stopping When Studying Novel Information, Abbie Ball
Other Faculty of Health Theses
The current research aimed to further the knowledge as to why people often terminate studying of novel information early, which has been found to be detrimental to performance. It has been suggested that stopping is due to an incorrect belief in information overload, specifically that seeing a higher volume of information is harmful for performance. The current research explored stopping under multiple perspectives. This included whether it is a metacognitive mechanism, a motivational mechanism or whether it is purely a belief in information overload. Chapter 1 reviews the relevant literature around stopping and study time allocation. Chapters 2-4 report 9 …
Helping People With Dementia To Eat Well At Home: An Investigation To Understand And Enhance Nutritional Care, Louise Mole
Helping People With Dementia To Eat Well At Home: An Investigation To Understand And Enhance Nutritional Care, Louise Mole
Other Faculty of Health Theses
In this thesis I developed a complex intervention to help people living at home with dementia to eat well, and improve nutritional care. This was achieved through four studies conducted using multiple methods. A scoping review found 61 studies reported in 63 articles after searching six databases from inception to July 2016. Content analysis was used, and the overarching categories were: ‘timely identification of nutritional risk and subsequent regular monitoring of nutritional status’, ‘multi-component tailored interventions’, and the ‘influence of the caregiving dyad on nutritional status’. Most studies were cross-sectional (n=24), cohort (n=15) or qualitative (n=9). Only three were randomised …
‘The Agony & The Ecstasy: Managing A Chronic Pain Condition Whilst Being A Mother’, Movita Chapman-Moyle
‘The Agony & The Ecstasy: Managing A Chronic Pain Condition Whilst Being A Mother’, Movita Chapman-Moyle
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Persistent pain is a debilitating condition affecting more women than men, and for women in their child-rearing years this means struggling to bring up children whilst contending with an unforgiving pain condition. Existing research in this area has found increased levels of pain complaints in children of mothers with persistent pain, raising the risk of them developing some form of pain in later years. A primary aim of this research was to investigate ways attachment influences pain development in children of maternal persistent pain sufferers. Additionally, the aim was to investigate how transmission of pain behaviour, including the experience of …
Understanding The Contribution Of Meaningful Processing To The Testing Effect, Sarah Hendry
Understanding The Contribution Of Meaningful Processing To The Testing Effect, Sarah Hendry
Other Faculty of Health Theses
The testing effect is an interesting phenomenon, with a wealth of support for its robustness. The basic idea is that attempting to learn something to retain over time is more fruitful when items are retrieved from memory or tested, than when items are restudied. This area of research has seen much attention in recent years, with the focus moving away from the conditions under which the effect can be found, to understanding the specific mechanisms that drive the effect. However, progress in this regard appears to be slow and contradictory. This thesis aims to address the gap in our understanding …
Exploring The Influence Of Social Relationships On Multisource Feedback Assessments For Uk General Practitioners: A Social Network Analysis, Sebastian Andrew George Stevens
Exploring The Influence Of Social Relationships On Multisource Feedback Assessments For Uk General Practitioners: A Social Network Analysis, Sebastian Andrew George Stevens
Other Faculty of Health Theses
One of the most common approaches to assess the performance of qualified doctors is that of multisource feedback (MSF). Previous research often cites MSF to be a valid, reliable and feasible method of assessing performance. However, potential biases in the self-selection of raters has been highlighted as a concern for the utility of MSF, particularly when used in high-stakes assessments such as medical Revalidation. This research uses general practice as the study setting to explore the extent to which social relationships influence the rater selection choices made by doctors. A case study approach was adopted recruiting three GP practices varying …
Exploring The Design, Use And Impact Of Companion Pet Robots And Automata For Older Adults And People With Dementia, Hannah Bradwell
Exploring The Design, Use And Impact Of Companion Pet Robots And Automata For Older Adults And People With Dementia, Hannah Bradwell
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Companion robots, socially assistive robots typically possessing zoomorphic features, have shown potential in the care of older adults and people with dementia. Previous research demonstrated reduced agitation, anxiety, loneliness and blood pressure for older adults, and reduced carer burden. However, many literature gaps and methodological flaws remained, and there was limited evidence of real-world adoption into health and care practice. In particular, most research involved Paro, the robot seal costing ~£5000, a prohibitive cost for most intended end-users. Furthermore, contradictory research results, robot failures and variable responses of older people suggested sub-optimal robot design. This thesis therefore aimed to expand …
Collaboration Practices In Intellectual (Learning) Disability Services’ Multidisciplinary Teams, Madeleine Tremblett
Collaboration Practices In Intellectual (Learning) Disability Services’ Multidisciplinary Teams, Madeleine Tremblett
Other Faculty of Health Theses
This thesis takes an approach that combines discursive psychology, conversation analysis and ethnography to explore how collaboration works in practice. Clinical guidance refers to collaboration as the chosen form of teamwork for multidisciplinary teams (MDT). Professionals in intellectual (learning) disability (I(L)D) services are advised by NHS England to collaborate in MDTs to address the multiple and complex needs of clients. However, clinical guidance for healthcare professionals uses the term collaboration without explaining what collaboration might look like. Previous research on collaboration focuses on the barriers and facilitators to collaboration, again treating collaboration as a concept that does not need explanation …
Birth Trauma: A Mixed-Methods Investigation, Grace Baptie
Birth Trauma: A Mixed-Methods Investigation, Grace Baptie
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Approximately one-third of women appraise their childbirth experience as traumatic and many women experience symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result. Whilst earlier work concentrated on prevalence and risk factors of clinically significant trauma, recent research focuses on the large group of women who experience childbirth as traumatic but do not necessarily meet the threshold for PTSD. This thesis comprises a mixed-methods design to investigate predisposing factors associated with presentation of postnatal posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms and the appraisal of childbirth as a traumatic experience. Specifically, this thesis aims to address the following questions: What perinatal risk factors …

Panpsychism And The First-Person Perspective: The Case For Panpsychist Idealism, Brentyn Ramm
Panpsychism And The First-Person Perspective: The Case For Panpsychist Idealism, Brentyn Ramm
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
In this paper I argue for a version of panpsychist idealism on first-person experiential grounds. As things always appear in my field of consciousness, there is prima facie } empirical support for idealism. Furthermore, by assuming that all things correspond to a conscious perspective or perspectives (i.e., panpsychism), realism about the world is safeguarded without the need to appeal to God (as per Berkeley's idealism). Panpsychist idealism also has a phenomenological advantage over traditional panpsychist views as it does not commit perceptual experience to massive error by denying that perceived colors are properties of things. Finally, I argue that the …
Sociodemographic Factors Associated With Childhood Vaccination Status In Sokoto State, Nigeria, Dauda Milgwe Madubu
Sociodemographic Factors Associated With Childhood Vaccination Status In Sokoto State, Nigeria, Dauda Milgwe Madubu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Immunization remains one of the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions worldwide. Despite the critical role of vaccines in improving childhood and maternal health, Sokoto state recorded the lowest childhood vaccination completion rate among the 37 states in Nigeria with only 5% of children aged 12-23 months having had full childhood vaccination based on data from the 2018 demographic and health survey. The factors associated with the state’s low childhood vaccination status have not been explored. The study examined the relationship between the sociodemographic factors including parents’ socioeconomic and ethnoreligious factors, place of residence, and children’s biological characteristics and …

The use of social networking sites (SNSs) continues to increase. SNS addiction refers to the maladaptive behaviors associated with addiction and the use of SNSs. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between emotional dysregulation and SNS addiction as well as investigate the association between distress intolerance and SNS addiction through emotional dysregulation. The social cognitive theory served as the theoretical framework. A total of 210 individuals completed an anonymous online survey through Qualtrics, which consisted of the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS), and the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale (DERS). Linear regression was …
Coping Strategies Among Disciplined Psychologists Working High-Conflict Custody Cases, Stephanie Joy Norris
Coping Strategies Among Disciplined Psychologists Working High-Conflict Custody Cases, Stephanie Joy Norris
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Psychologists who work with high conflict custody cases have one of the highest risks of receiving a board complaint against their license. There is no qualitative research specific to psychologists who have been disciplined from their state licensing board because of their work with high conflict custody cases. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and understand the meaning of the experiences of psychologists who have worked or are currently working on high-conflict custody cases and have received discipline from their state licensing board. The transactional theory of stress and coping was used as the foundation for which …
Perceptions Of Child Sexual Offending Cases Involving Biological Kinship And Victim Age, Carmen Lorraine Neufeld
Perceptions Of Child Sexual Offending Cases Involving Biological Kinship And Victim Age, Carmen Lorraine Neufeld
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Child sexual offenders are commonly viewed as some of the worst offenders within North American society, often eliciting responses such as fear, disgust, and moral indignation. The purpose of this quantitative study was to test evolutionary theory’s notion of inclusive fitness by exploring how the relationship between child sexual offenders and victims, as well as victim age affects the public’s emotional responses including fear and aversion. In addition to affective responses, opinions regarding crime severity and length of sentence were also examined. Using a quantitative between-person experimental vignette design, 200 participants were randomly assigned a child sexual abuse case with …

This study addressed the perceived negative individual characteristics that may precipitate failure of small business owners in securing microloans. The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental, correlational study was to examine how the personality traits of small business owners related to their ability to secure microloans for their business needs. Goldberg’s big five theory provided a framework for the study and aided in forming the research questions focused on the relationship between personality traits of the big five theory and the ability of small business owners to secure microloans for their business needs. A sample of 196 small business owners in …
Evaluating The Role Of Health Care In Mexico In Undocumented Immigration To The United States, Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed
Evaluating The Role Of Health Care In Mexico In Undocumented Immigration To The United States, Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Undocumented immigration has been a major social and political problem for the United States with an estimated 11 million immigrants living presently in an undocumented status. In Mexico, 73% of the population live below the poverty line and face challenges in meeting basic needs let alone purchasing private health insurance. In May 2003, the government of Mexico established the Segura Popular (popular healthcare) to extend health insurance to underinsured and uninsured communities to address healthcare access inequities. In depth phenomenological interviews were used to explore the lived experiences of formerly undocumented Mexican immigrants living in Hidalgo County, Texas, regarding the …
