The Boss’S Long Arm: The Differential Impact Of Authoritarian And Benevolent Leadership On Spousal Family Satisfaction, Lei Yao, Minya Xu, Ekin Pellegrini Nov 2021

The Boss’S Long Arm: The Differential Impact Of Authoritarian And Benevolent Leadership On Spousal Family Satisfaction, Lei Yao, Minya Xu, Ekin Pellegrini

Ed G. Smith College of Business Faculty Works

The extant studies on leadership are replete with employee, coworker, and leader outcomes, however, research is still nascent on leadership’s crossover into employees’ family members’ lives. To examine leadership’s impact on the work–family interface, we draw on conservation of resources theory (COR) and crossover theory and investigate how authoritarian leadership and benevolent leadership affect spousal family satisfaction. We examine the mediating influence of work–family conflict (WFC) and work-family facilitation (WFF), and the moderating impact of spouses’ need for control. Our model was tested with multisource, mutiwave data from 207 Chinese married dyads. The results suggest that, as expected, the positive …

Engaging Peers To Promote Wellbeing And Inclusion Of Newcomer Students: A Call For Equity-Informed Peer Interventions, Claire Crooks, Natalia Kubishyn, Amira Noyes, Gina Kayssi Nov 2021

Engaging Peers To Promote Wellbeing And Inclusion Of Newcomer Students: A Call For Equity-Informed Peer Interventions, Claire Crooks, Natalia Kubishyn, Amira Noyes, Gina Kayssi

Education Publications

Although newcomer youth demonstrate high levels of resiliency, many experience challenges in emotional, linguistic, academic, and social functioning. Over the past decade, some promising school-based psychosocial interventions for newcomer youth have been developed. These interventions are necessary, but not sufficient to promote well-being. Without attention to the larger context, focusing solely on the skills and adjustment of newcomer youth could potentially stigmatize students further. There is a need to engage non-newcomer peers for two reasons. First, peer relationships and inclusion are important predictors of well-being. Second, from an equity lens, there is a need to create environments that promote youth …

Intra-Participant And Inter-Analyst Cacophony: Working The Hyphen Between Modalities Using Provocative Reflexivity, David A. Caicedo, Andrea Nikté Juarez Mendoza, Miguel Pinedo

Publications and Research

Multimodal psychological research highlights the benefit of using complementary approaches to the phenomenological study of lived experience. Rather than focus on any individual method, this study attempts to concentrate on the transition, or hyphen, between them, as a place for reflexivity, ethics, and theory. Participants were 14 adults, recruited from ‘New York Community College’ and ‘New Jersey Community College’ in the U.S., who engaged in focus groups where they completed two activities: drawing a map of their personal journey to the college or of their self-identity, and their definitions for the immigration-related terms illegal and undocumented. Results demonstrated that …

Behind “Not A Single Word”: On The Relationship Between Lu Xun And His Grandfather, Junlin Gao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Lu Xun wrote many reminiscences about his life, which concern all kinds of people whom he met at different life stages, including teachers, friends, disciples and family, but he wrote “not a single word” about his grandfather Zhou Fuqing. This essays holds that Lu Xun has been deliberately evading the issue of his grandfather’s imperial examination because it had led to a series of misfortunes and humiliations in Lu Xun’s early years. This essay further probes into the differences between Lu Xun and his grandfather in terms of ideological and cultural concepts, code of conduct, literary and aesthetic taste, and …

The Realm Aesthetics Of “Quick” In Su Shi’S Poems, Chunjie Zhu Nov 2021

The Realm Aesthetics Of “Quick” In Su Shi’S Poems, Chunjie Zhu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Su Shi’s advocacy and pursuit of the “quick”(kuai) aesthetic is a phenomenon that should not be ignored in the history of poetry. By appreciating the cheerful poems, imitating the “quick” poetry by literati of previous generations, and promoting the writing of such poetry, he was an early advocate who proposed and perfected the theory of “quick” poetry. In his writings, he combined cheerful and joyful feelings with writings uninterrupted by measuring and weighing the phrases, and tried to construct a “quick” aesthetic realm of poetry. Meanwhile, he injected into this realm new elements of humor and vigor, which established a …

Growing-And-Giving Mindset Intervention In Early Childhood Education: A Collaborative Action Research, Fumiko Masaki Nov 2021

Growing-And-Giving Mindset Intervention In Early Childhood Education: A Collaborative Action Research, Fumiko Masaki

The Qualitative Report

In childhood education, a behaviorist approach (a mixture of praise and punishment) has been used for student target behaviors; however, the results have not been consistent. This study investigated how a constructivist approach would work in the same setting. The participant was a four-year-old student who showed target behaviors with negative attention-seeking and avoidance of self-regulation; three teachers and the author worked with him on collaborative action research. We treated him using the behaviorist approach in the first cycle of intervention. It seemed to work on the surface but was not helping him become autonomously self-regulated; his surroundings learned to …

Two Models Of Coteaching From University Teaching Staff: Phenomenographic Research, Jesus Pinzón-Ulloa, Mariana Tafur Arciniegas Dr, Irma A. Flores H.

The Qualitative Report

The literature of coteaching in the post-secondary landscape encompasses a wide array of different conceptions. Having multiple meanings of coteaching in higher education may pose some challenges for effectively implementing and researching this collaborative model. We should have a clear picture of the qualitatively different ways in which educators who co-teach in post-secondary settings understand this practice. Aiming to offer one of the first contributions to this effort, we analyzed the experiences of 16 university coteaching practitioners from a top university in Bogotá, Colombia. The sample participants´ interviews were analyzed using a phenomenographic methodology (Marton, 1981), which seeks to capture …

“I Finally Marginalized Myself From The Mainstream”: An Autoethnography Study Of Chinese International Student’S Development Of Intercultural Communicative Competence, Yuqi Lin, Hongzhi Zhang

The Qualitative Report

In the higher education market, the cross-border flow of international students has become increasingly apparent. For Australia, China has been a major student source and most of these students have been enrolled in the higher education sector. Such a phenomenon has rendered the innovation of higher education management necessary, and its socio-cultural influence has attracted attention from the Australian government. This study suggests that international students’ intercultural communicative competence (ICC) deficits could influence their self-perceptions thus compromising their ability to communicate with peers. Using a qualitative research approach, the study explores the extent to which China’s College English influences Chinese …

Good Intentions Go Awry: Investigation Of Unhelpful Supportive Leadership, Cheryl E. Gray Nov 2021

Good Intentions Go Awry: Investigation Of Unhelpful Supportive Leadership, Cheryl E. Gray

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In studies of the dark side of leadership, leaders are often depicted as bad people who engage in abusive behaviors. While some leaders have self-serving motives and engage in cruel behaviors, negative leadership outcomes are not limited to abusive supervisors. This research casts light on an understudied form of negative leadership: unhelpful supportive leadership. Unhelpful supportive leadership characterizes leaders who perform supportive acts that the recipient believes were intended to benefit them but are perceived as unhelpful or harmful. Results of two quantitative survey studies (Study 1: N = 1,257 employees; Study 2: N = 161 employee-supervisor dyads) demonstrate that …

Abolishing The Corporal Punishment Exception To Child Abuse In New York, Julia Patz Nov 2021

Abolishing The Corporal Punishment Exception To Child Abuse In New York, Julia Patz

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog

Do you condone child abuse? Upon hearing the question, the presumably immediate answer is an unequivocal “no.” This presumption would further flow into the expected answers of the general public. This is a firm notion that we expect most people to hold: Child abuse is bad. Yet, according to a 2021 American Family Survey, fort seven percent of the United States population supports child abuse in some circumstances. While it is true that the child abuse described in the survey had a different name, it is nonetheless child abuse. This “other name” is corporal punishment, which consists of using physical …

Educated Activism, Cole G. Armstrong, Ted Butryn Nov 2021

Educated Activism, Cole G. Armstrong, Ted Butryn

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Professional athletes play an important role in addressing issues of social justice and promoting critical dialogues in society (Edwards, 2016). While the history of athlete activism can be traced back to the early twentieth century (Moore, 2017), recently athletes have spoken out about social issues that transcend sport (Modiano, 2017; Tredway, 2020). Though scholars have examined what Edwards (2016) has called the “fourth wave of athlete activism,” little is known about how various stakeholders perceive the activities of athlete activists. Specifically, scholars have yet to examine the perceptions of high school athletes regarding athlete activism. Further, little is known about …

Enabling Sustainable Organizational Change: A Case Of Cognitive Diversity In The Automotive Industry, Tonja Blom, Yvonne Du Plessis, Hamid H. Kazeroony

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

In diverse societies such as South Africa, organizations continue to face inclusion challenges when implementing change. This study proposes a different method and new dimension of diversity management within the cognitive diversity construct, namely human niche theory, to tackle the diversity dilemma of exclusivity. The research question asked whether human niche theory, as a defined concept within cognitive diversity, could be utilized by managers to enable inclusion and promote sustainable organizational change implementation. Conceptually, this paper relates human niche theory to seven themes in the change process, namely, communication, training, motivation, resources, control, monitoring, and feedback. An exploratory single case …

The UN COP26 2021 conference on climate change offers the chance for world leaders to take action and make urgent and meaningful commitments to reducing emissions and limit global temperatures to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels by 2050. Whilst the political aspects and subsequent ramifications of these fundamental and critical decisions cannot be underestimated, there exists a technical perspective where digital and IS technology has a role to play in the monitoring of potential solutions, but also an integral element of climate change solutions. We explore these aspects in this editorial article, offering a comprehensive opinion based insight to a …
