Second Language Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Pedagogical Practices, Collaborations, And Relationships With Other Teachers Through Professional Development, Simone Smala, Robyn M. Gillies, Katherine Mclay, Huong Ngyuen

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper reports on the relationship between language teacher practices and their collaborations with other teachers through professional development. The paper argues that there is a link between the disposition to use evidence-based practices in language teaching, and ongoing reinforcement of such practices through dialogic exchange in professional practice sessions. Furthermore, the paper understands the learning and development of such disposition as a career-long endeavour, first encountered in quality teacher education programs and then continued by committing to ongoing professional development. Survey data were collected from a group of language teachers from various second languages in primary and secondary schools …

Mindful Matters; The Efficacy Of An Eight-Week Mindfulness Intervention On Boarding School Teacher Burnout, Nicole Campbell Jan 2021

Mindful Matters; The Efficacy Of An Eight-Week Mindfulness Intervention On Boarding School Teacher Burnout, Nicole Campbell

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Teacher burnout is a serious issue. Studies show that burnout decreases teacher instruction efficacy, increases absenteeism, interferes with student/teacher relationships, and causes attrition, which costs the system millions of dollars each year (Suh, 2015). While there is ample research on traditional teachers and burnout, boarding school teachers are a largely understudied population. These teachers educate students in residential school settings, housing students on evenings and weekends throughout the school year. Many boarding school teachers must work additional hours stretching into evenings and weekends and fulfill multiple roles beyond a classroom teacher. Therefore, most of these teachers work well beyond a …

Federal Employee Views Across Administrations: An Examination Of The 2010 Obama And 2018 Trump Leadership Capital And The Perceptions Of The Agency Employees, Dimple Sunayna Johnson

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

One of the many responsibilities of the president is the management of the expansive federal government. From agenda planning to reform implementation, a political leader can impact the federal employees’ job role. The federal government, however, does not administer alone, top-down mandates are managed by tiers of management, with the front-line supervisors acting as the liaison to federal employees. Understanding a president’s leadership capital alongside the federal employee perceptions of job satisfaction and supervisory support can provide opportunities to gain insight into establishing and maintaining a public sector landscape that is effective and efficient.

The study consisted of a quantitative …

Mapping The Current Landscape Of Research Library Engagement With Emerging Technologies In Research And Learning: Final Report, Sarah Lippincott, Mary Lee Kennedy, Clifford Lynch, Scout Calvert, Jocelyn Cozzo

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The generation, dissemination, and analysis of digital information is a significant driver, and consequence, of technological change. As data and information stewards in physical and virtual space, research libraries are thoroughly entangled in the challenges presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution:1 a societal shift powered not by steam or electricity, but by data, and characterized by a fusion of the physical and digital worlds.2 Organizing, structuring, preserving, and providing access to growing volumes of the digital data generated and required by research and industry will become a critically important function. As partners with the community of researchers and scholars, research …

Grounded in Buchanan’s and Tullock’s public choice theory, the purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences and perceptions of 20 randomly selected Jamaican senior management government officials from two local government corporations concerning the financial and human resource capacity issues. Data were collected using semistructured interviews, government documents, and public and government legislative data. The data were analyzed using the Smith and Osborn interpretative phenomenological analysis, and the Moustakas modified van Kaam 7-step analysis method. …

An Attention-Based View Of Strategic Human Resource Management, Soo-Hoon Lee Jan 2021

An Attention-Based View Of Strategic Human Resource Management, Soo-Hoon Lee

Management Faculty Publications

In spite of the designation, research in strategic human resource management (SHRM) has largely focused on tactical rather than strategic issues. These studies have attempted to explain whether firm performance is associated with “best-practice” or “best-fit” human resource management (HRM) practices. The focus on internally consistent (horizontal fit) HRM practices is better characterized as tactical implementation than as strategic formulation. In the latter, HRM leads rather than follows the firm’s long-term responses to shifts in the firm’s competitive and market environment. In this paper, I propose an attention-based view of the firm to reframe SHRM research and policy to support …

Worth area use for sustainability. The participants comprised 4 small business enterprise leaders in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area who effectively used KM strategies to sustain business beyond 5 years. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and internal and external …

Somali Remittance Companies’ Transition To Islamic Banks, Ali Abdi Farah Jan 2021

Somali Remittance Companies’ Transition To Islamic Banks, Ali Abdi Farah

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Somalia’s financial industry is transforming. Some remittance companies havetransformed into Islamic banks, which was not easy because the remittance companies lacked the technology, finance, and human capital necessary to make the banks sustainable. Money transfer operators that transform into Islamic banks also risk failure due to limited knowledge of the transformation’s effects. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of a sample of leaders of Somali remittance companies that were transformed into Islamic banks. A three-step conceptual framework consisting of goal, process, and outcome guided the inquiry. The research question concerned the lived experiences …

Will It Be Ok Boomers?: Effects Of Precarious Work On Older Job-Insecure Workers, Alissa (Gebben) Neal Jan 2021

Will It Be Ok Boomers?: Effects Of Precarious Work On Older Job-Insecure Workers, Alissa (Gebben) Neal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The changing nature of work, in conjunction with union power decline, has resulted in increasing levels of job insecurity and precarious work among the global workforce (Benach et al., 2014; Hoffman et al., 2020). Additionally, research has shown that older workers experience work differently than younger workers (Ng & Feldman, 2012), and represent 44% of the workforce in the United States (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2020). The present study explores the extent to which the confluence of precarious work and age creates a scenario where these workers respond to job insecurity in ways which differ from what is typically depicted …

Regulatory Competition And State Capacity, Martin W. Sybblis Jan 2021

Regulatory Competition And State Capacity, Martin W. Sybblis

Faculty Articles

This Article explores an underlying tension in the regulatory competition literature regarding why some jurisdictions are more attractive to firms than others. It pays special attention to offshore financial centers (OFCs). OFCs court the business of nonresidents, offer business friendly regulatory environments, and provide for minimal, if any, taxation on their customers. On the one extreme, OFCs are theorized as merely products of legislative capture— thereby lacking any meaningful agency of their own. On the other hand, OFCs are conceptualized as well-governed jurisdictions that attract investment because of the high quality of their laws and legal institutions—indicating some ability to …

Policy Considerations Regarding Student Loan Debt And Higher Education, Todd R. Niemczyk Esq. Jan 2021

Policy Considerations Regarding Student Loan Debt And Higher Education, Todd R. Niemczyk Esq.

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within the last 30 years, the policy considerations regarding student loan debt and higher education have become a series of strong opinions, heated debate, and partisan politics. Key stakeholders including the United States Government, both for-profit and traditional higher- educations institutions, financial organizations, special interest groups, and students all have interests. More so, all branches of Government, the Legislative, Judicial, and Executive, are areas where policy is both born and challenged. Some are aligned, and some are competing such that crafting sound policy regarding the lending and management of student loan debt has created a difficult situation that may well …

A Systems Thinking Approach To Formulating The Problem Of Military Sexual Trauma Among Black Female Veterans, Paula Smith-Benson Jan 2021

A Systems Thinking Approach To Formulating The Problem Of Military Sexual Trauma Among Black Female Veterans, Paula Smith-Benson

Full-Text Theses & Dissertations

Minority veterans are one of the fastest growing veteran populations (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2020b). Research over the last fifty years has documented that minority veterans, especially Black female veterans, are at a disproportionate risk for many problems, such as suicide and military sexual trauma (MST) (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2020b). In order to adequately address problems faced by the Black female veteran population, I argue that the problem must first be adequately formulated by the veteran community and veteran leadership. In this dissertation, I review the current body of literature on military sexual trauma with a systems view, using …

Rap1a Overlaps The Age/Rage Signaling Cascade In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Stephanie Burr Jan 2021

Rap1a Overlaps The Age/Rage Signaling Cascade In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Stephanie Burr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diabetic individuals have an increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease due to stiffening of the left ventricle, which is thought to occur, in part, by increased AGE/RAGE signaling. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) accumulate within the body over time, and under hyperglycemic conditions, the formation and accumulation of AGEs is accelerated. AGEs exert their effect by binding to their receptor (RAGE) and can induce myofibroblast differentiation, oxidative stress, cell-extracellular matrix contraction, and cell migration. Previous findings from our lab have demonstrated that preventing the production of Rap1a, a Ras-like GTPase signaling protein, in cardiac fibroblasts will decrease type 2 diabetes …

Structured To Fail: Lessons From The Trump Administration's Faulty Pandemic Planning And Response, Alejandro E. Camacho, Robert L. Glicksman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The Trump Administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic is a stark reminder that poorly designed government can be a matter of life and death. This article explains how the Administration’s careless and delayed response to the crisis was made immeasurably worse by its confused and confusing reallocation of authority to perform or supervise tasks essential to reducing the virus’s ravages.

After exploring the rationale for and impact of prior federal reorganizations responding to public health crises, the article shows how a combination of unnecessary and unhelpful overlapping authority and a thoughtless mix of centralized and decentralized authority contributed to the …

Double-Loop Learning And Productive Reasoning: Chris Argyris’S Contributions To A Framework For Lifelong Learning And Inquiry, Kevin M. Clark Jan 2021

Double-Loop Learning And Productive Reasoning: Chris Argyris’S Contributions To A Framework For Lifelong Learning And Inquiry, Kevin M. Clark

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

This article reviews social scientist and organizational researcher Chris Argyris’s publications from the 1970s through the 2000s about organizational learning. In his role as an action scientist and consultant, working to facilitate learning in organizational contexts and drawing on earlier work in psychology from John Dewey and Kurt Lewin, Argyris developed his “theory of action” perspective on learning and interpersonal inquiry. According to Argyris, learning involves increasing the effectiveness of our actions so as to produce the intended results. He argued, however, that we are often unaware of the extent to which our actions inhibit learning in social contexts. Argyris …

Four research questions were developed to investigate if there was a difference in elementary schools that implemented a house system and ones that did not during the 2018-2019 school year. All schools included in the study had …

The Onslaught Of Crisis Leadership Advice: Sifting Through Popular Leadership Sources In The Covid-19 Era, R. Tyler Spradley Jan 2021

The Onslaught Of Crisis Leadership Advice: Sifting Through Popular Leadership Sources In The Covid-19 Era, R. Tyler Spradley

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

This study critiques COVID-19 crisis leadership discourse in authoritative sources for leadership advice including Entrepreneur, Forbes, Fortune, Harvard Business Review, Harvard Business School’s COVID-19 Business Impact Center, and Real Leaders. Two central lines of inquiry drive this study: First, what are the pervasive practice-based recommendations typified in COVID-19 crisis leadership discourse? Second, whose interest does the COVID-19 crisis leadership discourse serve? Conclusions question the widespread practicality of advice and argue that advice functions to reassert the power dynamic of authoritative texts and super leaders over popular crisis leadership press. Furthermore, advice tends to promote command-and-control leadership with implications for taking …

On The Strategic Relationship Between Leadership And Innovation In Us Firms, Shabeer Kirmani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Leadership is one of the most important factors in organizational success. Innovation is another of most important factors in organizational success. Leaders play a pivotal role in the innovation capabilities of organizations. One of the most important areas in Leadership Studies (LS) is the association between leadership style and the firm's innovation performance, but a lack of understanding and consensus still remains as a major issue. This research aims to address the research gap by reviewing the empirical literature and determining how the ambidextrous leadership (transactional and transformational) styles in top level U.S. management (CEOs) are related with firm ambidextrous …

Masculinity In Policing: The Need To Recruit More Women In American Police Departments Fall 2020 Symposium: Addressing The Crisis In Policing Today: Race, Masculinity, And Police Use Of Force In America, Stephen Rushin

Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article, written as part of The George Washington Law Review Symposium on “Addressing the Crisis in Policing Today,” examines how American police departments can improve their recruitment and retention of women. Women currently make up a mere 13% of all police officers in the United States. This number has remained frustratingly low and stagnant for years.
This Article begins by considering the potentially harmful consequences of the underrepresentation of women in American policing. Some commentators have recently argued that the hiring of more women may, by itself, help transform policing. To evaluate this hypothesis, the first part of this …

Implementing A Transitional Care Protocol To Reduce Psychiatric Rehospitalizations, Charles Wangui Jan 2021

Implementing A Transitional Care Protocol To Reduce Psychiatric Rehospitalizations, Charles Wangui

DNP Scholarly Projects

Readmission rates in hospitals across the country are at an all-time high. Patients being
discharged from the hospital may feel fearful, especially if they are experiencing a new onset of
illness. Many patients wonder how they will deal with or manage their illness once they return
home. The goal for hospitals should be to reduce readmissions by addressing the factors that
impact readmission. Improved care coordination is one of the goals of transitional care. Patients'
functioning and quality of life increase when hospital readmissions are reduced. Readmissions
can be reduced by addressing care management before and after discharge in all …

Police Arbitration, Stephen Rushin Jan 2021

Police Arbitration, Stephen Rushin

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Before punishing an officer for professional misconduct, police departments often provide the officer with an opportunity to file an appeal. In many police departments, this appeals process culminates in a hearing before an arbitrator. While numerous media reports have suggested that arbitrators regularly overturn or reduce discipline, little legal research has comprehensively examined the outcomes of police disciplinary appeals across the United States.

In order to better understand the use of arbitration in police disciplinary appeals and build on prior research, this Article draws on a dataset of 624 arbitration awards issued between 2006 and 2020 from a diverse range …
