A Faustian Bargain That Undermines Research Participants’ Privacy Rights And Return Of Results, Barbara J. Evans, Susan M. Wolf
A Faustian Bargain That Undermines Research Participants’ Privacy Rights And Return Of Results, Barbara J. Evans, Susan M. Wolf
Florida Law Review
A 2018 committee report published by the highly respected National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (the Report) recommends stripping research participants of crucial data privacy rights and discarding decades of carefully deliberated consensus guidelines for the ethical return of results and data from research. This Article traces these disturbing recommendations to three root causes: (1) a statement of task that blocked careful and impartial analysis of a disputed legal matter central to the Report; (2) a piecemeal legal analysis that omitted relevant strands of law; and (3) the inappropriate conflation of two distinct concepts—the return of individual research results …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study aims to investigate articles with the theme of accounting and covid-19 published during the pandemic and indexed by Dimension (https://dimension.ai) with a focus on an analysis of journals, articles, and keywords. The articles analyzed were as many as 150 documents using bibliometric analysis with the help of R Biblioshiny software. The results showed that from several journals that published articles on the theme of accounting and covid-19, the themes discussed were not only focused on accounting but themes extended to other themes such as environment, science, energy, and health. The journal that publishes this theme the most frequently …
University Administrators Serving International Students During Social And Organizational Change, Luda Patokina
University Administrators Serving International Students During Social And Organizational Change, Luda Patokina
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
Attracting full fee paying international students to higher education institutions in the United States has become a central issue for university administrators in the era of globalization. With current decreases in international student enrollments, it is more important to understand how to strengthen international student support services to both increase international students’ retention and satisfaction with their educational experience abroad and to recruit new international students from a dwindling pool. This study investigated how university administrators served international students at a private, nonprofit, four-year university in the Northeast United States. Using a single case study methodology, the researcher examined how …
How Leaders Propose Meaning Making - A Psychological Psychological Perspective, Dominick Hankle
How Leaders Propose Meaning Making - A Psychological Psychological Perspective, Dominick Hankle
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
Meaning-making is essential for the flourishing of people and is innate to the human experience. People will make meaning whenever they sense a discrepancy or threat that contradicts their global beliefs. Leaders can facilitate meaning-making in their constituents in order to manage change, gain acceptance of new initiatives, and overcome organizational distress. To do so leaders can utilize a number of psycho-social interventions. The first of these is to embody the vision and mission statements of the organization and create an environment where the culture reflects the organizational values. Secondly, leadership can communicate these values in a way that is …
Diversity And Inclusion Toolbox: Action Items For The Nonprofit Sector, Donovan Branche Phd, Karen Ford Dsw
Diversity And Inclusion Toolbox: Action Items For The Nonprofit Sector, Donovan Branche Phd, Karen Ford Dsw
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
There is a critical lack of diversity in leadership, particularly African-American women, across all sectors. Given that the nonprofit sector is an integral part of the social system, it makes sense to have leaders that reflect the social fabric of the United States. Diversifying the nonprofit work is an important goal, not only given underrepresentation but also because of looming population shifts. This paper builds on previous mixed methods research by the authors by adding concrete implications and action points to increase diversity and inclusion.
Strategic Planning As Action Research: Envisioning The Future Of A University Library, Gregory A. Smith
Strategic Planning As Action Research: Envisioning The Future Of A University Library, Gregory A. Smith
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
In 2020, Liberty University’s Jerry Falwell Library (JFL) carried out a participatory strategic planning project that bore many surface similarities to an action research study: a design based on scholarly and professional literature, systematic collection of new data, structured analysis of such data, and the enactment of change based on project findings. An examination of the planning process provides the opportunity to consider whether a participatory approach to strategic planning can legitimately be viewed as a form of action research. The library’s planning process exhibited three key features of action research: a focus on change, a blurring of the distinction …

Mental Health Response For Law Enforcement, Adam Meierding
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
Law enforcement has been responding to mental health crisis calls for as long as it has been a profession. Police officers are asked to respond and solve difficult problems. using a variety of tools. This paper will identify what tools law enforcement is currently using to deal with these difficult calls and also the different techniques police officers should be using as our response continues to change. With ever-changing expectations from the public, along with rapidly evolving case law, this paper will show why law enforcements’ response to mental health crisis calls needs to change and what law enforcement needs …

Why Did You Become A Police Officer? Entry-Related Motives And Concerns Of Women And Men In Policing, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Starr Solomon, Rachael Rief
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
As police agencies in the United States suffer declining applications and struggle to recruit women, the National Institute of Justice has identified workforce development as a priority research area. To recruit more effectively, we must understand what attracts people to policing and what deters them. We surveyed officers in two Midwestern police departments (n = 832) about entry motivations and concerns and examined gender differences. Serve/protect motivations were most important for men and women, though women rated the category significantly higher. Women and non-White officers rated legacy motives higher than did males and White officers. Women reported more concerns …

Learning Through Dialogue During Intelligence Assessments: A Translation Of Theory Into Practice, Adrian Wolfberg, Nancy M. Dixon
Learning Through Dialogue During Intelligence Assessments: A Translation Of Theory Into Practice, Adrian Wolfberg, Nancy M. Dixon
Engaged Management ReView
We translate a theory into the practice of intelligence assessments. Following Karl Weick’s (1993) retrospective approach, the translation relies on previously published evaluations of intelligence assessment practices. Intelligence assessments are used in organizations to inform leaders of threats and opportunities. The theory we apply describes how an intelligence analyst learns through dialogue during the practice of conducting an intelligence assessment, and it consists of four learning archetypes: cooperative, focused, survival, and reflective. The theory is based on the differential effects on learning caused by the interaction between information overload and equivocality. We use the role of dialogue in the theory …

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi
This article analyzes bureaucratic reforms for the second period of Jokowi’s leadership—the last stage of the grand design for bureaucratic reform. This moment is the last chance for Jokowi to shows his commitment to good governance. However, there are things that cannot be denied, the experience of the last five years (2014-2019) of Jokowi's leadership still leaves a lot of homework that needs to be addressed. The bureaucracy performance is still low. The research design in this article uses descriptive research methods supported by a literature study approach that traces the actual secondary data as a study material. The results …

The New And The Old: Responses To Change In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Maura A. E. Pilotti, Eman J. Y. Abdulhadi, Tahani A. Algouhi, Muamar H. Salameh
Journal of International Women's Studies
This qualitative study was primarily concerned with Saudi women’s reactions to social change in the political sphere. It focused on their responses to decrees allowing women to vote in municipal elections for the first time, become candidates in such elections, and be nominated in the Shura Council by the King. Structured interviews of urban dwellers illustrated that changes, seen as opportunities, had been noted, but their impact had yet to be processed thoroughly. Attitudes towards political participation were positive and largely optimistic, but rarely seen as applying to the self. Competence, rather than gender, was seen as relevant to voters’ …

Actionable Attributes Of Service Design For Business, Joanna Rutkowska, Froukje Sleeswijk Visser, David Lamas
Actionable Attributes Of Service Design For Business, Joanna Rutkowska, Froukje Sleeswijk Visser, David Lamas
ServDes Conference Series
The role of service deliverables in the early phases of service development has been studied both in academia and practice. We lack knowledge on the impact of service deliverables for the later phases of the service development process in which service designers are usually not engaged. In this paper, we aim to understand what attributes of service deliverables help business clients to act upon the deliverables on their own after service designers are gone.
To elicit actionable attributes of service deliverables, e.g., reports, we conducted semi-structured interviews with five leading and recognizable service design consultants from Poland who lead service …

An Application Framework Of Service Design For Servitization, Peng Lu
An Application Framework Of Service Design For Servitization, Peng Lu
ServDes Conference Series
Einola et al. (as cited in Kohtamäki, Rabetino, & Einola, 2018, p. 186) pointed out that “the tensions that manufacturers face when transitioning from manufacturing products toward the provision of customized integrated solutions are often paradoxical in nature,” which could be taken as the cultural and corporate challenges of adopting a servitization business strategy (Baines et al., 2009; Viet et al., 2013). As an emerging design field, service design offers a holistic, human-centered, co-creative approach to developing new services (Costa et al., 2018), which has the potential to be embodied in the process of servitization. This short paper tries to …

From Product Centricity To Services: Design Workshops And Maps As Tools In Strategy Articulation, Olivia Harre, Lene Nielsen
ServDes Conference Series
This paper explores how an IT company wants to change from product- centricity to servitization. A cross-functional customer journey workshop mapped the current state from the customer’s point of view, and by identifying opportunities, it identifies gaps in becoming a service organization. Activities in the workshop focused on mapping a current customer journey and a proposition of a customer journey. The case explores how a service design workshop and tools can be used in strategic work, to support and facilitate a discussion on changes needed to be customer-centric, going beyond technology and features. The workshop and maps proved useful in …

Unblock The Tension While Implementing Service Design, Arthur Yeh, Yvonne Yam
ServDes Conference Series
The value of excellent service design can only be realized when it has an organization’s buy-in and is being implemented. Service Designers not only need to focus on designing excellent service but also need to be concerned with the implementation of design, in a smooth and sustainable manner.
In this highly practical and interactive workshop, we will introduce Ken Wilber's Integral Framework and AQAL map for a smoother implementation of the service design practice.
We encourage all participants to bring their real-life client/own scenario(s). We will uncover blind spots and explore new possibilities for creating project buy-in. At the end …

Exploring The Effects Of Coworker Ostracism On Feedback Inquiry And Voice: The Mediating Role Of Proactive Motivation, Ethan G. Rothstein
Exploring The Effects Of Coworker Ostracism On Feedback Inquiry And Voice: The Mediating Role Of Proactive Motivation, Ethan G. Rothstein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Coworker ostracism occurs when employees perceive that their coworkers are ignoring or excluding them. The current work examines how coworker ostracism predicts feedback inquiry and voice, two proactive behaviors important for individual and organizational success. Specifically, I explored whether these relationships are mediated by three proactive motivation states: organizational identification, control appraisal, and positive affect. I also examined whether political skill and perceived organizational support (POS) moderated the relationships between coworker ostracism and proactive motivation states, as well as the proposed indirect effects. I collected data from 309 participants via TurkPrime, using a two-wave lagged design with measurements separated by …

2020 was to be a landmark year for setting targets to stop biodiversity loss and prevent dangerous climate change. However, COVID-19 has caused delays to the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and the 26th COP of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Negotiations on the Global Biodiversity Framework and the second submission of Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement were due to take place at these COPs. There is uncertainty as to how the COVID-19 disruption will affect the negotiations, whether parties will pursue more ambitious actions or take a …

Setting The Stage For Junior Faculty And New Instructors: A Basic Primer For Teaching And Learning, Russell Wartalski, Noreen Powers, Effie Kritikos
Literacy, Leadership, and Development Faculty Publications
All college and university faculty look for ways to enhance their teaching practices. Yet, junior faculty and new instructors in post-secondary contexts indicate greater stress in preparing for and acclimating to their new teaching roles than their more experienced faculty counterparts. This paper provides junior faculty with a basic primer on several learning frameworks and a dozen established instructional techniques that can be used to engage students of all ages and academic levels in traditional, online, and hybrid learning environments.

Determinants Of Entrepreneurial Venture Growth In The Philippines Using The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, Brian C. Gozun, John Paolo R. Rivera
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
Entrepreneurial venture growth requires the capacity to produce products that are acceptable to the market, and the level of support given to enterprises helps them produce, innovate, and gain market access. However, entrepreneurs are faced with challenges related to physical and social infrastructure, local and global business environment, a level playing field, access to financing, and access to skill development and knowledge. If these remain unmitigated, they have the potential to hamper entrepreneurial growth. Hence, we inquire on the critical drivers of venture growth that will allow entrepreneurs to stimulate their enterprises using founder characteristics, firm attributes, and entrepreneurial strategies. …

The Integration Of Roman Catholic Traditions And Evidence-Based Psychological Services, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
The Roman Catholic Church is the largest, and most enduring continuous organization, secular or religious, of any kind in the world with a 2,000-plus-year history. It currently includes well over a billion people. Regardless of its size, scope, history, and impact, the Roman Catholic Church is often greatly misunderstood and people frequently maintain stereotypic and even discriminatory views about Catholics and their clerical leaders. The purpose of this article is to present the integration of the Roman Catholic tradition into psychological assessment and therapy and to provide several examples of this integration. The article highlights how this integration can be …

Finding “Hidden Heroines”, Jennifer Helgren
Pacific Faculty Work
This article explores girls' participation in 1976 American Revolution Bicentennial celebrations through their national organizations. Members of the Girl Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls were deeply involved in the nation's displays of civic pride. Girls' organizations linked their ordinary service projects to the Bicentennial and created new projects as they caught the national bandwagon. To some extent, these efforts emphasized unquestioning patriotism, but each organization, propelled by second-wave feminism and social history, also absorbed and advanced efforts to recover multiple perspectives. Girls' organizations became public history spaces and girls in them saw the understanding of and dissemination of history …
The Role Of Leadership On Corporate Governance, John Brackett
The Role Of Leadership On Corporate Governance, John Brackett
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Corporate governance and internal controls over the accounting and financial reporting processes are critical to timely and accurate financial data reporting. Sheikh (2019) concluded that internal controls establish accepted practices, manage risk choices in decision-making, and improve ongoing monitoring activities to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and company policy. Wang and Zhou (2016) identified leadership as a critical component of corporate governance and concluded that a company’s accounting process and related controls were interdependent with enterprise management and directly correlated to the sustainability of operations and business success. The Board of Directors and the Chief Audit Executives are responsible for …
