Improving Covid-19 Vaccination Uptake In The Latino Community Through Standardized Outreach, Bianca De La Piedra
Improving Covid-19 Vaccination Uptake In The Latino Community Through Standardized Outreach, Bianca De La Piedra
Master's Projects and Capstones
Vaccine hesitancy during the COVID-19 pandemic has been an issue in the Latino community since the approval of the emergency use of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. Latino patients from a community health clinic in Oakland, CA have expressed their hesitancy. Only 47% of patients 65 years and older at the community health clinic received the COVID-19 vaccine. With COVID-19 disproportionately affecting this community, focusing on prevention through the uptake of a COVID-19 vaccine is necessary. A microsystem assessment concluded the need for the improvement of patient outreach via calls. This project seeks to examine if standardizing the patient outreach …
Implementing An Evidence-Based Multifactorial, Multidisciplinary Fall Prevention Program In A Nursing And Rehabilitation Center To Reduce Fall Rates Among Patients, Tincy Poovathur
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Falls are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly in the United States. Patients in long-term care facilities are at increased risk for falls, accounting for 20 percent of fatal falls that require hospitalization. The economic and social burden of falls and fall-related injuries is significant. Fall-related injuries and their resulting expenditures are expected to increase substantially with the increasing aging population making this a problem of high priority. The literature recommends and supports incorporating evidence-based fall prevention initiatives into long-term care facility safety programs to address this problem. Based on the literature review and the facility's …
Medical Volunteers During Pandemics, Disasters, And Other Emergencies: Management Best Practices, John I. Winn, Seth Chatfield, Kevin H. Govern
Medical Volunteers During Pandemics, Disasters, And Other Emergencies: Management Best Practices, John I. Winn, Seth Chatfield, Kevin H. Govern
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
How best to utilize volunteers[1] during medical emergencies is an essential part of hospital compliance planning. Onboarding recruited and spontaneous volunteers during crisis situations require careful consideration of multiple legal issues. Volunteer planning becomes more complex if volunteers move across state lines because applicable tort immunity statutes,[2] compensation limits,[3]and workers compensation regimes vary significantly from one jurisdiction to another. Effective planning for volunteers requires these and other issues to be addressed well in advance of actual emergencies. Although predicting the scope or severity of any future crisis is impossible, the provided checklist of management best practices …
School Counseling In An Oppressed Society: Examining The Relationships Between Social Justice Advocacy Competence, Empowerment, And Social Justice Self-Efficacy, Michelle Tanner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current nature of oppression that exists in the United States can be seen in the structure and process of American schools, impacting students’ social/emotional, academic, and career development. The defined role of school counselors along with their educational background; strategic position within schools to make meaningful change; access to critical student, teacher, family, and community data; and their professional dispositions and experience make them the most logical choice to help remove systemic barriers and to create equitable opportunities for the marginalized students. School counselors must work as social justice advocates to lead these diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts; however, …
Subepidermal Moisture Measures And Their Relationship To Early Identification Of Pressure Injuries In Both Dark And Light Skin Tones In The Acute Care Setting, Cecilia Zamarripa
Subepidermal Moisture Measures And Their Relationship To Early Identification Of Pressure Injuries In Both Dark And Light Skin Tones In The Acute Care Setting, Cecilia Zamarripa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Pressure injuries are an important quality measure. Most are avoidable and can be prevented by implementing nursing care strategies early. Pressure injury prevention is significant to nursing practice. There is a gap in the ability to detect early skin damage through standard visual skin assessment in dark skin toned individuals. Subepidermal moisture (SEM) values have been shown to detect early tissue damage in people with dark skin, prior to it being detected through standard visual skin assessment.
Objectives: This study sought to explore the relationship between visual skin assessment and SEM as indicators of pressure injury and …
Antibiotic Stewardship For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In Long-Term Care, Laura Giovannoli
Antibiotic Stewardship For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In Long-Term Care, Laura Giovannoli
Academic Festival
Evidence review supports the need for a nursing decision-making aid to assist frontline nurses in identifying urinary tract infections versus asymptomatic bacteriuria for patients in long-term care. Findings in studies by Pulia et al. (2018) and Doernberg et al. (2015) concur regarding the high rate of inappropriate antibiotic treatment for misdiagnosed UTIs and the need for improved antibiotic stewardship. This DNP project addresses the problem of inappropriate antibiotic use and antimicrobial stewardship in patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria in the long-term care setting. The decision-making tool used was the Suspected UTI SBAR form which follows McGeer criteria (Stone et al., 2012) …

Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
Correlation Between Servant Leadership and Organizational Commitment
Abstract
This paper presents an overview of a study of the relationship between servant leadership and organizational commitment. The study included a convenience sample of 84 full and part-time employees of a health professions education unit within an academic health center. Participants were surveyed using the Executive Servant Leadership Scale (ESLS) to assess servant leadership and the Klein Unidimensional Target-free (KUT) instrument to assess organizational commitment. Data analysis was conducted using Kendall’s tau-b and Spearman’s rho. Results showed that there is a significant positive relationship between servant leadership and organizational commitment.

Relationship Between Supervisors' Servant Leadership And Police Officers Job Satisfaction, Michael Chikeleze, Jennifer Vigil, William C. Hale, Iris D. Johnson, David Williams
Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice
Recent police killings of unarmed African Americans in the United States and the subsequent protests and demonstrations against police brutality have resulted in more focus on the importance of collaborative relationships between law enforcement agencies and their communities. This quantitative correlational research study was conducted in one southern United States police department that incorporated a servant leadership philosophy, including its leaders being publicly heralded for their servant leadership practices that positively impacted its relationship with its community. The study examined if a relationship existed between perceived servant leadership of law enforcement leaders and line police officers’ job satisfaction. The study’s …
Burnt Out Educators: A Phenomenological Study Of Minnesota Teachers, Hannah Frink-Levenhagen
Burnt Out Educators: A Phenomenological Study Of Minnesota Teachers, Hannah Frink-Levenhagen
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gain an understanding of how Minnesota teachers have experienced and define teacher burnout. Prior to the study, the most current data on the subject was last collected in 1984 (Farber, 1991). Moreover, the researcher sought to better understand the impact professional learning networks can have on teacher well-being in relation to burnout status.
In order to understand how the phenomenon is experienced and viewed by Minnesota teachers, the researcher conducted a phenomenological study that was comprised of seven in-depth interviews. Participants reflected on and defined their experience with teacher burnout, determined their …

Dnp Final Report: Reducing The Rate Of Falls With A Stuctured Fall Program, Elanda L. Douglas
Dnp Final Report: Reducing The Rate Of Falls With A Stuctured Fall Program, Elanda L. Douglas
DNP Final Reports
Background: Fall rates continue to be a significant problem in health care facilities despite all the research and tool kits created to prevent falls. Hospitals that have successfully reduced fall rates find it challenging to sustain a reduction in the fall rates. During hospitalizations, 3%-20% of patients fall, with 30%-50% resulting in injury (Joint Commission, [JC], 2015).
Internal Evidence: Despite Medical City Alliance (MCA) having an evidence-based fall program, the fall rate has not decreased. Falls are one of the quality measures identified at the division level that needs improvement.

International Migration From The Latin American-Caribbean Region: Taking Environmental Indicators Into Consideration, Chelsea Wepy
International Migration From The Latin American-Caribbean Region: Taking Environmental Indicators Into Consideration, Chelsea Wepy
Student Theses and Dissertations
International migration, the act of leaving one’s country to permanently settle in another country, is driven by many socio economic/political factors, such as lack of economic opportunity, access to education, governmental corruption, and violence. These factors have proven to be the reason that many citizens within the Latin American-Caribbean region either choose or are forced to relocate internationally. While these factors are important to consider independently; these issues are often exacerbated by changes in the natural environment. The objective of my paper is to highlight the importance of considering changes in the natural environment. In doing so, I hope to …

Understanding And Enhancing The Graduate Admissions Experience For Dacamented/Undocumented Students, Taylor Ulrich
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
The informal and often ad hoc nature of college admissions can deter DACAmented/ Undocumented students from applying, being admitted, or choosing to enroll in higher education. Admissions offices can serve as a resource to these students, assisting them in navigating this extensive process. The purpose of my research was to better understand the DACAmented/Undocumented graduate student experience and explore how DACAmented/Undocumented students’ needs could be better met in graduate admissions at University of San Diego. The research questions guiding my study were (1) how could I understand and enhance the DACAmented/Undocumented graduate student experience? and (2) how could I work …
Police Arbitration, Stephen Rushin
Police Arbitration, Stephen Rushin
Vanderbilt Law Review
Before punishing an officer for professional misconduct, police departments often provide the officer with an opportunity to file an appeal. In many police departments, this appeals process culminates in a hearing before an arbitrator. While numerous media reports have suggested that arbitrators regularly overturn or reduce discipline, little legal research has comprehensively examined the outcomes of police disciplinary appeals across the United States.
In order to better understand the use of arbitration in police disciplinary appeals and build on prior research, this Article draws on a dataset of 624 arbitration awards issued between 2006 and 2020 from a diverse range …
Barriers And Enablers To Building Entrepreneurial Ecosystems As Perceived By Change Agents In The Workplace, Shanda Barrett
Barriers And Enablers To Building Entrepreneurial Ecosystems As Perceived By Change Agents In The Workplace, Shanda Barrett
Dissertations
This study explores factors that influence entrepreneurial ecosystems. Clifton (2010, 2015) recommends entrepreneurship, better business models, and new business startups as a solution for economic renewal in the United States and specifically identifies disengaged workers and low-energy workplaces as the starting point. The recommendation does not address how to make workplaces conducive to entrepreneurial activity, nor does the recommendation address how to engage entrepreneurial employees.
Existing literature outlines the known tensions between theory, anecdotal evidence, and the professional practice of building entrepreneurial ecosystems. To date, the term entrepreneurial ecosystem exists as a metaphor in the extant literature. While scholars have …

The business and organizational worlds have been in constant transformation for years. Still, 2020 changed drastically the way they function from their very inside. The COVID-19 pandemic hit all industries, and with that, all models of communication had to be reshaped so they could efficiently connect with their internal players in charge of crafting and delivering messages that would work towards a healthy and productive environment. Internal Communications played a critical role in the employee relations, brand image, and overall success of organizations, especially during the crisis. Through primary and secondary research conducted to three different organizations’ sizes, this research …

Pernet Family Health Service, Inc.: Organizational Restructuring & Change Management Best Practices, Carly Massino
School of Professional Studies
Research exhibits that between 70-75% of change initiatives fail and a major contributor to this trend is employee resistance. Although change can bring exciting growth and innovation, it can cause employees heightened stress and worsened physical and mental health outcomes. These effects are often amplified when organizations enact multiple change initiatives at once. These worsened outcomes are often a result of feelings of distress, anxiety, powerlessness, and apprehension and unknowns such as how one’s position will be affected, how operations will change, or how one fits into the change. This topic is incredibly relevant for Pernet Family Health Service, Inc., …
Platforming Gamification As A Means Of Engagement In Employee Recruitment And Onboarding, Samuel D. Lipson
Platforming Gamification As A Means Of Engagement In Employee Recruitment And Onboarding, Samuel D. Lipson
Management Undergraduate Honors Theses
Gamification, generally understood as the application of game elements and design concepts in non-game contexts, is a field of academic study and multibillion-dollar business tool whose popularity is growing as a means of employee engagement, education and training, and talent selection. While there are companies that attempt to gamify separate processes within the employee life cycle, no company exists that gamifies the stages surrounding talent selection: attraction and recruitment of applicants and onboarding of final candidates. To this end, this thesis proposes a software and consulting company, GameON Business Solutions, that will work with small and medium enterprises to expand …
Lean Production And Operational Performance: The Influence Of Organizational Culture, Rick Hardcopf, Gensheng (Jason) Liu, Rachna Shah
Lean Production And Operational Performance: The Influence Of Organizational Culture, Rick Hardcopf, Gensheng (Jason) Liu, Rachna Shah
Management Faculty Publications
The use of lean production methods to drive sustainable competitive advantage has been a cornerstone of worldwide manufacturing strategy since the early 1980’s. Unfortunately, success from using lean has been mixed. Some researchers suggest that contextual variables play a central role in explaining the inconsistent results. This study evaluates the role of one critical contextual variable, organizational culture, in realizing operational improvements from lean. We investigate the influence of four distinct organizational cultures, as well as a hybrid culture and a firm’s ability to be culturally ambidextrous, on the relationship between lean and operational performance, as measured by cost, quality, …
'Training' The Body Politic: Essays On The School Reform Orthodoxy, Jahan Naghshineh
'Training' The Body Politic: Essays On The School Reform Orthodoxy, Jahan Naghshineh
Education (PhD) Dissertations
These essays represent my attempt to grapple with fundamental questions about what I see as the upside-down nature of educational reforms in American society. Why is there a never-ending crisis in America’s public schools? What does it mean when the educational specter from different periods of history is discredited and yet the specter keeps being recycled decade after decade? For example, elites propagated crisis narratives to galvanize support for the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation at the turn of the century. Countless researchers then documented the adverse impacts of NCLB on America’s schools and yet that literature never led …

Portraits Of Visionary Leaders: Technology Directors’ Leadership Characteristics And Experiences In K–12 Independent Schools During The Covid-19 Pandemic, William Jeremiah Womack
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study’s goal was to examine technology directors’ leadership characteristics and their experiences leading information and communication technologies in K–12 independent schools in Tennessee during the COVID-19 pandemic. As information and communication technologies’ use expanded in education, exploring Organizational Leadership characteristics and experiences with information and communication technologies integration in K–12 was critical, especially as teachers and students depended upon remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using narrative inquiry, this study’s findings described experiences and illustrated certain visionary leadership characteristics technology directors used as they navigated information and communication technologies integration in K–12 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Two prominent themes …
A Study Of Communication Practices Between Office And Field-Based Personnel In Home Healthcare Agencies, Ruth M. Bates-Hill
A Study Of Communication Practices Between Office And Field-Based Personnel In Home Healthcare Agencies, Ruth M. Bates-Hill
Dissertations
The population of developed countries is rapidly aging. People want to age in their residence, and as they advance in years, most people will need assistance with activities of daily living and perhaps medical assistance to remain at home. Home health aides provide a large portion of such care. However, the annual turnover rate of home health aides exceeds 60% due to factors such as low wages, poor benefits, and a challenging work environment. Many studies have been conducted to elucidate the factors contributing to job satisfaction in the home health aide population, yet despite decades of research, turnover among …

Local Land Use Power: Managing Human Settlements To Mitigate Climate Change, John R. Nolon
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Local land use law has evolved into a flexible and powerful technique for achieving sustainable development. This Article, adapted from Chapter 3 of Choosing to Succeed: Land Use Law & Climate Control (ELI Press 2021), looks at the authority and strategies that enable municipalities to lower their carbon footprint. It describes and analyzes many methods, both traditional and innovative, to use the power of local governments to reshape human settlements to mitigate climate change. The Article demonstrates that land use regulation can be retooled to greatly reduce or capture urban carbon emissions, and posits that mitigation efforts can lead to …

An Inclusive Leadership Model To Integrate Organizational Dynamics, Change Management, Change Leadership, And Diversity And Inclusion Needs For The Successful Implementation Of Business Transformations, Jarrod A. Combs-Harris
Full-Text Theses & Dissertations
This paper explores Change Management and Change Leadership theories in-depth, along with an analysis of how Diversity and Inclusion drivers play a significant role in how businesses can sustain successful transformations. In the past, experts focused on how change initiatives can help transform businesses on a macro level, regardless of employee factors. In most recent times, the world has evolved to include diversity and inclusion initiatives that will consider broader perspectives from communities who were once silent.
Historically, change management theories of yesteryear focused on how to execute change in a myriad of ways. Some theories were more tactical in …

Covid-19 Impact On Business, Meredith Headlee
Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses
COVID-19 has not only been a major public health crisis, but it has also caused an economic shock. Small businesses have been at the losing end of the U.S. economy for years, but nothing has hurt them as bad as the COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic has devastated thousands of small businesses while larger companies have fared well and, in some cases, thrived. Although there has been an increase in bankruptcy filings among public companies, the numbers are far lower than in the 2008 financial crisis (Lahart). This paper will explore what impact the pandemic has had on small businesses, large …

Laugh Until It’S No Longer A Scandal: The Use Of Humorous Apologia To Reframe Crisis Narratives On Saturday Night Live, Vanessa S. Hills
Masters Theses
This thesis examines the role of humor-based apologia as a crisis communication strategy for celebrities. Using a rhetorical method, it explicates the role that humor plays in shaping crisis narratives in response to kategoria within the context of Saturday Night Live. Four case study analyses determine whether the generic parameters of apologia include the use of a humor-based apologia or whether humorous apologiae should be classified as a unique subgenre. These findings further the body of research on apologia and highlight the need for additional research on the effectiveness of humor as a crisis communication strategy.

An Optimized Approach To Resource Loading Hyperscale Technology Projects To Balance Feasibility, Suitability, And Acceptability, Shane Barrett
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
In the construction industry, project schedules are invariably dynamic, uncertain, and subject to significant change thru the execution cycle. Therefore, effective planning and scheduling are fundamental activities and correlate closely with the success or failure of a project. Unfortunately, schedule approach invariably focuses on timing, durations, and milestones without equitable consideration to the interconnection between resource availability, capabilities, and schedule feasibility. A project schedule that does not include resource allocations implies that the contractor has unlimited resources and has the flexibility to apply all necessary resources to a project change, without incurring added costs. Unlike traditional scheduling techniques, Resourced Loaded …
