The Meaning Of Leadership For Leaders Of Private Universities In Indonesia, Immanuel Yosua, Juliana Murniati, Hana Panggabean Oct 2021

The Meaning Of Leadership For Leaders Of Private Universities In Indonesia, Immanuel Yosua, Juliana Murniati, Hana Panggabean

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

Leading a university is generally more complex than a business organization, as the situation requires the presence of a leader who not only meets the criteria but is also willing to lead, a very rarely found combination in universities. Interestingly, although it is not easy to find academics with such qualities, these people still exist because they see the importance of leading for the survival of the organization. Therefore, it becomes interesting to understand how they ascribe meaning to their leadership amid the difficulties they must deal with. This study was conducted using in-depth interviews with 13 academic leaders to …

Appreciating Large Classes: Using Appreciative Inquiry To Foster A Hospitable Learning Space For Experiential Learning, Mai P. Trinh, Chantal Van Esch, Hector A. Martinez, Tracey Messer

Management Faculty Publications

Experiential learning has been documented as an effective method for student learning, yet its use in large-enrollment classes remains limited. Kolb’s experiential learning theory emphasizes that experiential learning requires a hospitable learning space (HLS) that is conducive to learning. In this article, we reframe the challenges to experiential learning in large classes as a failure to create and maintain an HLS, and we propose Appreciative inquiry as one solution to this problem. Appreciative inquiry is an organizational development methodology that practitioners have successfully used to engage large groups to leverage their strengths and resources. First, we describe the HLS as …

A Comparison Of Undergraduate Perceptions Of Institutional Quality At A Public Institution, Nancy M. Woodrow

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Understanding the undergraduate student’s perception of institutional quality is important to university administrators. This understanding can assist the university administrator in adjusting and improving relevant areas that aid in retention of current students and increase their satisfaction with the educational experience. Furthermore, the undergraduate student’s perception of institutional quality could be useful in motivating future students to select the institution as their college choice. Unfortunately, perception of institutional quality is not among the factors of consideration when incoming undergraduate students make their college selection. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assist the educational administrator in understanding whether the …

Building Evaluation Capacity In Youth-Serving Organizations Through Evaluation Advisory Boards, Barry Garst, James Pann, Tiffany Berry, Gretchen Biesecker Oct 2021

Building Evaluation Capacity In Youth-Serving Organizations Through Evaluation Advisory Boards, Barry Garst, James Pann, Tiffany Berry, Gretchen Biesecker

Journal of Youth Development

Youth-serving organizations seek effective and cost-efficient solutions to build evidence and advance their impact. Some common challenges include choosing data systems or assessments, budgeting and planning for 3rd-party studies, and refining measurement and outcomes when programs expand or change. Evaluation advisory boards (EABs) are a low-cost solution to add evaluation capacity and can be mutually beneficial to both youth-serving organizations and evaluation experts. Previous research suggests that EABs may encourage meaningful use of data, support internal evaluators, and/or facilitate difficult conversations among stakeholders. However, there are very few examples of successful EABs in practice. This paper shares the perspectives of …

Understanding The Role Of Family-Specific Resources For Immigrant Workers, Faviola Robles-Saenz, Rebecca M. Brossoit, Tori L. Crain, Leslie Hammer, Jacqueline R. Wong

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Very few studies to date have examined immigrant workers’ (i.e., workers who were not born in the United States) experiences of the work-family interface. In a sample of healthcare workers across two time points, the present study evaluates the role of different family-specific resources for immigrant workers compared to native-born workers (i.e., workers born in the U.S.). The results suggest that family-specific support from coworkers is especially beneficial for reducing immigrant workers’ experiences of family-to-work conflict. For both native-born and immigrant workers, those who experience more family-specific support from supervisors and coworkers, and those who work in an organization that …
