The Relationship Between Land Use Change And Disease Prevalence, Allison Bjornstad Jan 2021

The Relationship Between Land Use Change And Disease Prevalence, Allison Bjornstad

Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects

Zoonotic disease outbreaks are becoming more novel and are increasing in frequency. This increase can be partially attributed to land use changes including deforestation, urbanization, and cultivation. Land use change alters disease prevalence by causing an increase in contact rates between disease hosts and humans. Land use changes also alter species compositions in the area to contain more competent disease hosts. Each pathogen can react to these changes in different ways. The specific reactions that each pathogen has to land use changes should be further researched so proper mitigation steps can be taken. Once the effects of land use change …

Meritocracy-Based Stickiness Measure Of Social Mobility, Curtis G. Tenney

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

I measure the stickiness of social mobility in terms of meritocratic assumptions through the first-known Meritocracy-Based Stickiness Measure of Mobility (MBSMoM) using mobility transition matrices and assumptions based on Full Meritocracy (FM) and Lack of Meritocracy (LM). I develop the Simple Stickiness Measure of Mobility (SSMoM) and the Weighted Stickiness Measure of Mobility (WSMoM). In addition, I create the MBSMoM which is calculated from mobility transition matrices of intragenerational, intergenerational, and multigenerational correlations using various measures of status including education, occupation, class, consumption, income, and wealth. Utilizing mobility transition matrices employed by plethora of studies, MBSMoMs are calculated as a …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common motorneuron (MN) disease in adulthood. ALS is hallmarked by the progressive loss of MNs in the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord. Many hypotheses to explain the pathogenesis of ALS have been explored, but the exact mechanisms underlying the development of this disease remain unknown. However, abnormalities in MN excitability and glutamate excitotoxicity are the most widely studied. For decades, researchers have examined MN excitability in ALS, but the current literature is inconsistent, showing evidence of hyperexcitability, hypoexcitability, or no change in excitability of MNs in ALS. Many of these studies also focus …

Adequately Reflecting The Severity Of Tropical Cyclones Using The New Tropical Cyclone Severity Scale, Nadia Bloemendaal, Hans De Moel, Jantsje M. Mol, Priscilla R.M. Bosma, Amy Polen, Jennifer M. Collins

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

For decades, meteorologists and governments have been warning communities in coastal areas for an imminent tropical cyclone (TC) using the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (SSHWS). The SSHWS categorizes a TC based on its maximum wind speed, and is used in defining evacuation strategies and humanitarian response. However, the SSHWS considers only the wind hazard of a TC, whereas a TC can also cause severe conditions through its high storm surges and extreme rainfall, triggering coastal and inland flooding. Consequently, the SSHWS fails to mirror the TC's total severity. This becomes evident when looking at past events such as Hurricane Harvey …

Subordination And Separation Of Powers, Matthew B. Lawrence Jan 2021

Subordination And Separation Of Powers, Matthew B. Lawrence

Faculty Articles

This Article calls for the incorporation of antisubordination into separation-ofpowers analysis. Scholars analyzing separation-of-powers tools—laws and norms that divide power among government actors—consider a long list of values ranging from protecting liberty to promoting efficiency. Absent from this list are questions of equity: questions of racism, sexism, and classism. This Article problematizes this omission and begins to rectify it. For the first time, this Article applies critical-race and feminist theorists’ subordination question—are marginalized groups disproportionately burdened?—to three important separation-of-powers tools: legislative appropriations, executive conditions, and constitutional entrenchment. In doing so, it reveals that each tool entails subordination by creating generalized …

Impact Of An Educational Module On Female Collegiate Athlete Knowledge Regarding The Female Athlete Triad, Cayla Marie Barretto

Honors Theses and Capstones

The Female Athlete Triad was defined in women’s sport as early as 1992, by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The guidelines regarding the Triad emphasis the importance of education in the prevention of the disorder. However, there is little research supporting if this education is occurring and if it is effective. A quantitative, quasi-experimental study was conducted at the University of New Hampshire. Twenty-five female collegiate athletes participated in a pre-test, educational intervention, and post-test to determine baseline knowledge and if there was any improvement in knowledge after education. Percent changes in scores from pre-test and post-test were …

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Migraines are a painful and life-interrupting disease which strikes around 23 million Americans every year (Goadsby et al., 2017). Not enough studies have been done to help the public fully understand migraines. Details regarding the causes and pathophysiology of migraines continue to be analyzed by physicians and scientists, as no theory has been fully confirmed regarding a migraine’s concrete path. The goal of this scientific review is to provide an overview for the main triggers of migraines, in reference to recent clinical investigations, and to understand why they might cause patients to be more prone to having a migraine attack …

Effects Of Soy Isoflavone, Anne Roberts Jan 2021

Effects Of Soy Isoflavone, Anne Roberts

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Soy, which contains a form of phytoestrogen known as isoflavones, impacts the biological activity of humans at all stages. There are many aspects to consider when determining whether soy is beneficial. Since the hormone estrogen plays a significant role in maintaining the biochemical and homeostatic conditions of an individual, it follows that the disruption of estrogenic levels can be detrimental. There are many hormone- dependent diseases that can be linked to one’s diet, and the possibility of utilizing phytoestrogens, such as soy, to prevent or control hormonal irregularities is compelling. This paper explores the effects that phytoestrogens, specifically soy, can …

The Riddle Of The Fetal Allograft, Rachel Tepper Jan 2021

The Riddle Of The Fetal Allograft, Rachel Tepper

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The immunological paradox of nurturing a fetus with paternal antigens poses some perplexing questions. Peter Medawar, an immunologist, asked at a lecture, “How does the pregnant mother contrive to nourish within itself, for many weeks or months, a fetus that is an antigenically foreign body?” Researchers have since then struggled to answer this question. The research on this topic has led to a few general hypotheses that try to explain this phenomenon. The downregulation of T cells toward paternal alloantigens is an accepted hypothesis. Another hypothesis discusses the significance of the decidua and its ability to impair dendritic cells, which …

Do People With Hashimoto’S Disease Need A Thyroidectomy?, Miriam Minkowitz Jan 2021

Do People With Hashimoto’S Disease Need A Thyroidectomy?, Miriam Minkowitz

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (HT) is one of the most common autoimmune diseases (Hiromatsu et al. 2013 p.13). It primarily affects the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland influences growth and regulates the body’s metabolism by manipulating hormonal levels. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis affects thyroid function through mechanisms that cause the hormone levels to become dysregulated. The standard therapy for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is hormone replacement. This approach helps most patients by regulating their thyroid hormones, though there are some individuals who fail treatment. Untreatable patients are plagued with weight gain, sleep disturbances, and other symptoms. Certain factors in thyroid disease may cause various secondary complications …

Debunking “De Minimis” Violations Of Prisoners’ Religious Rights: Further Problems With The Supreme Court’S “Hands Off” Approach, Samantha Sparacino Jan 2021

Debunking “De Minimis” Violations Of Prisoners’ Religious Rights: Further Problems With The Supreme Court’S “Hands Off” Approach, Samantha Sparacino

Touro Law Review

Circuits are split as there continues to be an inconsistent application of Supreme Court doctrine stemming from the notion of the separation of church and the state. Imprisonment does not strip a wrongdoer of his constitutionally guaranteed rights and protections. Some Circuits have held that a minor, or de minimis, interpretation of an inmate’s religious rights can constitute a substantial burden under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act. In the absence of clear direction from the Supreme Court, I propose that courts should refrain from determining the value of a religious belief or practice as it relates …

Cognitive-Motor Interactions In Gait And Postural Control And Cortical Network Neurocorrelates, Nathan Morelli Jan 2021

Cognitive-Motor Interactions In Gait And Postural Control And Cortical Network Neurocorrelates, Nathan Morelli

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

The ability to mitigate performance decrements during the concurrent completion of cognitive and motor tasks (i.e., dual task (DT)) deteriorates in patients with mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI). It is theorized that the long-term sequelae of mTBI are due to the return to full activity prior to neurophysiologic healing. To mitigate the negative outcomes associated with mTBIs, translational clinical research of neurophysiologic recovery is of paramount importance for both athletic and non-athletic populations. Despite the well-known health consequences, clinical decisions regarding neurophysiologic recovery and return to activity remain problematic for clinicians. Return to activity decisions are currently based on normalization …

The Influence Of Physical Health, Emotional Health, And Socioeconomic Factors On The Musculoskeletal Pain Experience In Patients Attending A Pro Bono Physical Therapy Clinic, Garrett Naze

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Non-communicable, chronic diseases are highly prevalent in the United States, reducing the quality of life for those affected and contributing to the majority of the nation’s healthcare expenditure. These conditions include, among others, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and musculoskeletal disease. Musculoskeletal disease is particularly of interest for the field of physical therapy as the vast majority of patients seeking care in the outpatient setting present with musculoskeletal pain complaints, resulting in limitations in function, participation, and quality of life for the patient.

The factors influencing health outcomes are diverse and include a person’s physical environment, social and economic factors, access to …

The Use Of Mechanotherapy To Promote The Recovery From Disuse Atrophy In Aging Rat Skeletal Muscle, Zachary Hettinger Jan 2021

The Use Of Mechanotherapy To Promote The Recovery From Disuse Atrophy In Aging Rat Skeletal Muscle, Zachary Hettinger

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

The combination of age and disuse-related skeletal muscle atrophy predisposes older adults to reduced mobility, loss of independence, and poor quality of life. Poor health outcomes resulting from periods of disuse in older adults are exacerbated by an inability to fully recover, ultimately accelerating geriatric populations towards further functional decline. Aged-related changes to skeletal muscle viscoelastic properties, specifically of muscle extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness, may not only impact how muscle responds during recovery, but also to interventions intended to augment recovery. Remodeling of muscle ECM in the aged may therefore benefit muscle mass recovery, yet therapies focused on ECM remodeling …
