Skirting The Law: Medicaid Block Grants And Per-Capita Caps In A Pandemic, Laura D. Hermer

To what extent can an administration abridge Medicaid’s entitlement status by administrative fiat? In the final year of the Trump administration, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) sought to push the outer bounds of this question by announcing the Healthy Adult Opportunity (HAO) initiative. It invited states to submit § 1115 demonstration applications to cover individuals not eligible for Medicaid benefits under the state’ s Medicaid plan—meaning, in many cases, the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA’s) Medicaid expansion population. Spending on those populations would be capped, not by purporting to waive federal law regarding …

The Implications Of Tear Gas Use On Endocrine Function, Sylvie Wilson
Pitzer Senior Theses
Tear gas is currently used as a riot control agent by the police and federal agents of the government. Though it has been banned in many countries, its use remains legal in the United States. Discussion surrounding the use of tear gas in the United States has increased in the news and social justice discourse throughout 2020 as a result of the Black Lives Matter protests that have swept across the nation. City, state, and federal government officials in multiple cities have attempted to quell protests using tear gas via police and federal agents. Many individuals with ovaries who had …

Microbiome Community And Parasitic Infections In Wild Bees, Mark G. Young
Microbiome Community And Parasitic Infections In Wild Bees, Mark G. Young
Honors Theses
The microbiome is increasingly recognized for its complex relationship with host fitness. Akin to primates and other social animals, bumblebees harbor a specific microbiome derived from social contact. The bumblebee microbiome is characteristically species poor, with just a few “core” phylotypes accounting for the majority of total abundance. Genomic analyses reveal phylogenetic congruence and adaptation of the core endosymbionts to the bumblebee gut, indicating a shared evolutionary history. Prior investigations reveal that the relative abundance of core microbes is negatively associated with infection by a trypanosome, Crithidia bombi, and that the microbiome has a mechanistic role in immunity. As …

Functional Fingerprinting Estimates Renewal Opportunities For Tree Species In A Mixed Turkey Oak Forest, Éva Salamon Albert, Ágnes Csiszár, Dénes Bartha
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Maintaining and managing trees with different ecological plasticity under climate conditions aggravated by short-term variability are major challenges for foresters. Our aims were to investigate species-specific ecophysiological responses of canopy trees in a mixed Turkey oak forest during their early-phase regeneration. We measured plant carbon and water exchange with portable IRGA equipment under natural field conditions (canopy gap) and in a climate-controlled (standardized) environment. We analyzed variability and differences in plant gas exchange in relation to important abiotic site parameters and the species. Assimilation, stomatal conductance, and intrinsic water use were applied as calibrating parameters for plant functional fingerprinting to …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Phalaenopsis is one of the most remarkable commercial genera in Orchidaceae family. Using immature explants for tissue culture of orchid results in undesired characteristics such as genetic variation and long-lasting juvenility. In this study, we optimized a protocol for somatic embryogenesis of Phalaenopsis amabilis cv. Jinan, by using mature thin cell layer (TCL) explants to minimize immature explant limitations. We examined somatic embryogenesis from two types of mature explants, viz. leaf lTCL and flower stalk nodes tTCL at various concentrations of thidiazuron (TDZ) (0, 1, 2, and 3 mg L-1). The results demonstrated that lTCL explants cultured on medium supplemented …

Cost-Effectiveness Of Interventions Targeting Hard-To-Reach Populations Living With Hiv In Eastern And Southern Africa, Deo Mujwara
Theses and Dissertations

Further, these populations have substantially low uptake of HIV testing services, and those that have been diagnosed with HIV and on antiretroviral therapy experience high loss-to-follow-up from treatment programs.
Hard-to-reach populations face unique barriers in accessing and utilizing routine HIV care such as provider stigmatization towards sex workers and highly …
Teachers' Views On The Intersectionality Between Culture And Student Behaviors, And Experience Using Culturally-Responsive Behavior Interventions, Toshna Pandey

Additionally, it also examined their experiences using behavior interventions effective for racially minoritized students. Findings suggest that participants often attributed challenging behaviors to student-level factors such as family and …
