The Intersection Between Black Hair And The Environment: Hair As A Site For Environmental Justice And Sustainability, Dafina Matiku

Scripps Senior Theses

Currently, we are facing several global crises that include but are not limited to climate change, food insecurity, pollution of the body and environment, as well as racial, gender, and class inequities. This thesis seeks to understand how the natural hair movement, which strives to omit toxic chemicals while embracing textured hair, can be a tool of reconnecting to nature. As humans we are intrinsically part of ecosystems and nature, we must find our niche in it instead of occupying and destroying our environment entirely. The methodology includes compiling a small array of experiences that show the nuance of hair …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant cells under environmental stress cause oxidative stress, which is one of major factors limiting the plant productivity. To prevent this limitation by stress conditions, a possible strategy is to strengthen the antioxidant defense of plants by gene manipulation of antioxidant enzymes and low molecular-weight (LMW) antioxidants. LMW antioxidants are important for the plant protection to environmental stress and also have nutritional merits for humans as antiaging and antidisease molecules. Sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] as a nutritional food crop has many advantages in terms of the cultivation on the global marginal lands. …

William Of Auxerre And Thomas Aquinas On Simultaneous Faith And Knowledge, Jacob Joseph Andrews Jan 2021

William Of Auxerre And Thomas Aquinas On Simultaneous Faith And Knowledge, Jacob Joseph Andrews

Dissertations

In this dissertation I will consider how two 13th century theologians, William of Auxerre (1156-1231) and St. Thomas Aquinas (1224-1274), explored the question, "Whether the same thing can be known (demonstratively) and (believed by faith)" (utrum idem sit scitum et creditum). Both denied that this was possible, but they differed in the relative epistemic priority of faith and knowledge. Aquinas thought that demonstrative knowledge has epistemic priority over faith: for example, if someone knows a proof for God's existence, then they know that God exists, and it is impossible for them to have faith that God exists. Aquinas is a …

The Future Of The Agricultural Industry – Is Blockchain A New Beginning?, Ryan Bisel Jan 2021

The Future Of The Agricultural Industry – Is Blockchain A New Beginning?, Ryan Bisel

Seattle University Law Review

As we advance into a digital era, we begin to depend on technological innovations to rapidly help develop and update processes and methods within different industries. Blockchain technology—popularized by cryptocurrency—is slowly making its debut in the agricultural supply chain. Implementing a blockchain requirement for suppliers would be beneficial because it would allow agricultural suppliers and distributors to track their products in a more efficient manner. However, there are four potential legal issues that are foreseeable: (1) preemption, (2) overlapping regulatory authority, (3) applying current legal rules to new technology, and (4) contracting. This Note will specifically focus on issues of …

LMU Theses and Dissertations

In the spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic mandated closures of thousands of schools across the United States. Students dependent upon the support, guidance, and community of their schools became disconnected from these resources while encountering the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic. This case study represents a time capsule of the school community of one Los Angeles County public middle school from March 16 to May 28, 2020. Semi-structured interviews of school staff and parents grounded the study’s analysis. Public documents and participant researcher protocol responses collaborated the participants’ narratives. Results provide a snapshot of the school community before …

Milked Dry: A Framing Analysis Of How Mass Media Helped Reframe The Public's Perception Of The Dairy Industry, Sequoia West

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This thesis investigates three documentaries (Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, The Milk System, and What the Health?) on the topic of the dairy industry and animal agriculture. A thematic analysis was conducted by using Erving Goffman’s Framing Theory to examine how dairy consumption has been framed over the past decade by the media, and how three documentaries contributed to a shift in the public’s perception and an overall decline of the dairy industry. The analysis consists of primary data (three documentaries) and secondary textual data from 45 social media posts culled from Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook. A consistent theme …

Judicial Stress And Resiliency Survey Covid-19 Update, Katheryn Yetter, David X. Swenson Jan 2021

Judicial Stress And Resiliency Survey Covid-19 Update, Katheryn Yetter, David X. Swenson

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Judges in the United States preside in many different courts, both on state and federal levels. Judges exercise a considerable amount of power as the ultimate decision makers in matters of legal controversy. However enviable this position may seem, the daily challenges of this role are stressful and can have an adverse effect on any judge’s health and well-being. While some would argue that these challenges are part of the job, the judiciary, legal community, and public in general would be remiss not to recognize the strain that these challenges create. To shed light on the matter, the 2019 National …

In each issue, we hope to provide information that will be of use to judges in their everyday work, whether in highlighting new procedures or methods of trial, court, or case management, providing substantive information regarding an area of law likely to be encountered by many judges, or by providing background information (such as psychology or other social science research) …

What Judges Can Do About Implicit Bias, Jerry Kang Jan 2021

What Judges Can Do About Implicit Bias, Jerry Kang

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

“Implicit bias” was not well known in legal communities twenty years ago. But now, the idea of implicit bias circulates widely in both popular and academic discussions. Even the casually interested judge knows a great deal about the topic. Still, even as the problem of implicit bias has grown familiar, potential solutions remain out of focus. Specifically, what can judges do about implicit bias, in their capacities as managers of a workplace, as well as vessels of state power?

In 2009 I wrote a Primer for the National Center for State Courts, which described the challenge of implicit bias to …

The Compassionate Court reflects a coherent, navigable, and humanistic judicial process no matter the severity of the matter or difficulty of the …

The Legal Exploitation Of Farm Animals: ‘Unnecessary Suffering’ In A Nation Of Animal Lovers, Megan Parker Jan 2021

The Legal Exploitation Of Farm Animals: ‘Unnecessary Suffering’ In A Nation Of Animal Lovers, Megan Parker

Plymouth Law Review

This article examines the necessity of farm animal suffering in the farm-to-fork process. Given the interdisciplinary nature of animal welfare, it covers a broad range of influencing factors, such as law, animal sentience science and the ethical dilemma of meat eating, including the ‘meat paradox’ and its effects on animal welfare. The current animal welfare law is outlined and the rise in veganism, thanks to social media, is discussed. The legal application of the term ‘unnecessary suffering’ is considered in detail, discussing whether the term, in its current form, is fit for purpose and the possibility of legal personhood for …

From The Dark Margins To The Spotlight: The Evolution Of Gastronomy And Food Studies In Ireland, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire Jan 2021

From The Dark Margins To The Spotlight: The Evolution Of Gastronomy And Food Studies In Ireland, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Books/Book Chapters

For many years, food was seen as too quotidian and belonging to the domestic sphere, and therefore to women, which excluded it from any serious study or consideration in academia. This chapter tracks the evolution of gastronomy and food studies in Ireland. It charts the development of gastronomy as a cultural field, originally in France, to its emergence as an academic discipline with a particular Irish inflection. It details the progress that food history and culinary education have made in Ireland, suggesting that a new liberal / vocational model of culinary education, which commenced in 1999, has helped transform the …

Applying A Food Studies Perspective To Irish Studies, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire Jan 2021

Applying A Food Studies Perspective To Irish Studies, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Books/Book Chapters

Food studies and Irish Studies stem from the same ‘studies’ phenomena and share many similarities in their journeys from the margins to becoming established academic disciplines. A common feature of the new academic studies movement, whether French, gender, postcolonial, cinematic, African, Irish or food is their interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary nature. They become more than any one discipline and scholars within these new fields continuously investigate from various angles, often adopting ‘self-reflexivity’ as an approach. Stereotypical postcolonial notions of the drunken or ‘stage Irishman’, or food’s association with the quotidian domestic, and therefore, feminine, led some academics up until relatively recently …

Self-Efficacy Supports Of Third Grade Reading Teachers In The Highest Reading Performing Schools In Georgi, Tami Mcclain

Ed.D. Dissertations

Students needed to be able to read in elementary school to be successful in school and in life. Meanwhile, teachers graduated from teacher preparation colleges and not able to teach reading once they were in their own classrooms. Teachers who developed self-efficacy in the teaching of reading were the best teachers to teach reading. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to determine third grade reading teachers’ perceptions of how school leaders, professional development, and instructional coaching supported the development of self-efficacy in reading instruction. I conducted this study in three schools in a school district with the highest …

A Methodist Response To Infant Mortality In The 19th Century: Public Health, Foundling Hospitals, And Abortion Curbs, Philip F. Hardt Jan 2021

A Methodist Response To Infant Mortality In The 19th Century: Public Health, Foundling Hospitals, And Abortion Curbs, Philip F. Hardt

The Asbury Journal

During the 1850s, infant mortality greatly increased in New York City and other large cities. One of the leading physicians to address this problem in New York City was Dr. David Meredith Reese, an active Methodist layman, who was also involved in many other issues of the day: phrenology, colonization, and Bible reading in the schools. In 1857, his Report on Infant Mortality in Large Cities was published in which he both examined its extent and sources and also suggested ways to reduce it. Strikingly, two of his recommendations for its reduction coincided with efforts already underway. For example, his …

Physicochemical And Functional Property Modification Of Myofibrillar Protein By Phenolic Compounds Under Oxidative Stress, Anqi Guo Jan 2021

Physicochemical And Functional Property Modification Of Myofibrillar Protein By Phenolic Compounds Under Oxidative Stress, Anqi Guo

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Polyphenol-rich spices and extracts of phenolic compounds are widely utilized in meat processing to modify product flavors. Chemically, polyphenols are reactive with myofibrillar protein (MP), the most functional fraction of all muscle proteins responsible for texture development in comminuted meat products. Such protein–polyphenol interaction is prevalent under oxidative conditions that are common in meat processing. As a large group of phytochemicals with diverse structures, phenolic compounds are known to interact with MP with varying efficacies. Yet, the structure-function relationship of polyphenols in eliciting modification of MP is poorly understood. The overall objective of this dissertation research was to elucidate the …

The Effect Of Oil Type, Oil Quality, Vitamin E, And Phytase Supplementation On Broiler Performance, Apparent Nutrient And Energy Utilization, And The Fatty Acid Profile Of Fat And Liver In Broiler Chickens, Richard A. Adefioye

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of oil type, oil quality, phytase, and vitamin E (VE) supplementation in broiler chickens. Experiment 1 used 378-day-old male by-product Cobb breeder chicks with 9 treatments, 7 replicates, and 6 birds per replicate, structured as a 2x2x2+1 factorial arrangement of treatments for 14 days. The first 8 treatments were based on a marginally non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) deficient diet (0.31%), while treatment 9 was a positive control (PC) diet with adequate NPP levels (0.45%). There were 2 levels of phytase (0 vs 1000 FTU/kg), 2 levels of oil quality (fresh soy oil; peroxide …
