Faculty and Student Publications

It is unclear whether the measurement of maximum muscle strength in younger children can be performed accurately due to factors such as motivation and maturity (i.e., the ability to receive instruction). If there is a large change in a ratio between muscular strength and size from the youngest to the oldest, then this might provide some indication that the youngest may not have been able to voluntarily activate their muscles for reasons mentioned previously. The purpose of this study was to observe the ratio between handgrip strength (HGS) and forearm muscle thickness (MT) across differing ages in younger children. A …

The Impact Of Vertical Public Health Initiatives On Gendered Familial Care Work: Public Health And Ethical Issues, Zahra Meghani Jan 2021

The Impact Of Vertical Public Health Initiatives On Gendered Familial Care Work: Public Health And Ethical Issues, Zahra Meghani

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Rigorous evaluations of the effects of vertical public health enterprises on the health systems of low-income countries usefully identify the public health and ethical costs of those initiatives. They reveal that such narrowly focused public health ventures undermine the efforts of those countries to establish and maintain adequately resourced and well-developed national health systems, including comprehensive primary care programs. This paper argues that the scope of assessments of vertical public health ventures should be broadened to include gender as an additional axis of analysis. When members of socio-economically marginalized populations are sick with conditions that are not covered by fragmented …

Indigenous Adult Illiteracy In The Andean Region Of South America, Alexa Ballard Jan 2021

Indigenous Adult Illiteracy In The Andean Region Of South America, Alexa Ballard

Ballard Brief

Indigenous adult illiteracy is often prevalent in poorer, less economically stable regions, such as the Andean Region of South America, specifically Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. The issue stems from several factors, such as language discrepancies, high dropout rates, and lack of access to quality education. Consequently, illiterate indigenous adults are more likely to suffer from poor health and low-quality employment. Women are more likely to suffer domestic violence and discrimination, and in general, illiteracy for both men and women contributes to decreased civic engagement and economic stability. Several programs currently exist to help illiterate individuals in the Andean Region, such …

Ulcerative Colitis, Randy Kinietz Jan 2021

Ulcerative Colitis, Randy Kinietz

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

This poster briefly covers the most important concepts of ulcerative colitis (UC). UC is a complex disease process and the exact etiology is not yet known. Many researchers are currently looking to find the cause of the disease and treatment options that can target the exact pathophysiological process. Nurses are instrumental in the care of UC, especially in an outpatient setting. Education on medications and proper follow-up appointments are the key to maintaining remission, reducing flare-ups, and cancer screening. Although UC is a complex disease, a multidisciplinary approach will reduce complications and prolong remission.

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Scientists in applied fields, including conservation biology, face increasing expectations to communicate their research across multiple audiences. As environmental issues become more complex, the need for scientists to clearly communicate with other scientists, managers, stakeholders, tribes, the public, and policy makers becomes ever critical. Despite this need, students in graduate science programs receive limited direct instruction in writing and little training in writing for audiences outside of academia or in different genres. To that end, we developed an interdisciplinary program that incorporates rhetorical theory and writing intensive pedagogy to train graduate science students to write more effectively across genres. During …

Endobariatric Procedures For Obesity: Clinical Indications And Available Options., Hemant Goyal, Jonathan Kopel, Abhilash Perisetti Md, Rupinder Mann, Aman Ali, Benjamin Tharian, Shreyas Saligram, Sumant Inamdar

Other Specialties

Obesity remains a growing public health epidemic that has increased healthcare costs and related comorbidities. Current treatment guidelines encourage a multidisciplinary approach starting from patient selection, interventions, and long-term follow-up to maintain weight loss. However, these conservative interventions are largely ineffective at reducing body weight due to low adherence to the treatment regimen. Recently, endoscopic bariatric therapies have become an attractive alternative to traditional invasive bariatric surgeries due to their improved efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Endoscopic bariatric therapies include intragastric balloon placement, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, gastric bypass revision, and aspiration therapy. These procedures fall into two separate categories depending on …
