Massive Resilience: An Emergent Strategy For Racial Equity In Richmond, Va, Ram Bhagat

Richmond Racial Equity Essays: Individual Essays

To counteract the educational harms caused by racism and poverty, transformative cultural experiences designed to increase social emotional competence and eliminate racist policies are required. One such experience is Massive Resilience, a framework and set of practices the author developed to build resilience for challenging systemic racism based on the universal values of Ubuntu, Sawubona, and Sankofa; centered on the principles of interconnectedness, inter-relatedness, and inter-resilience, which collectively promote compassion, courage, and creativity.

Targeted Transparency As Regulation, Margaret Kwoka, Bridget Dupey Jan 2021

Targeted Transparency As Regulation, Margaret Kwoka, Bridget Dupey

Florida State University Law Review

Traditional government transparency tools are coming under increasing criticism. Laws like the Freedom of Information Act, once thought to revolutionize democracy by opening up government for all to see, have proven to be relatively rough tools (at best) in accomplishing accountability. While the democratic ideals are still celebrated, the increasing costs of broad open-the-government style laws-both monetary and nonmonetary-have not gone unnoticed. Meanwhile, in the regulatory landscape for private companies, targeted disclosure requirements have become increasingly popular methods of encouraging all manner of socially beneficial behavior, be it curbing pollution, making safer consumer products, or ensuring anti-discrimination. Across a wide …

The Effect Of Diabetes Self-Management Education In Conjunction With Diabetes Medication Therapy Management On Hemoglobin A1c, Esther Tella Jan 2021

The Effect Of Diabetes Self-Management Education In Conjunction With Diabetes Medication Therapy Management On Hemoglobin A1c, Esther Tella

Graduate Research Showcase

Abstract

The exponential increase of type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among the adult population has become a substantial issue in need of urgent intervention in the United States and globally. Approximately 30.3 million of the United States population were estimated to be living with diabetes in 2015, however, 95% have T2DM. According to existing studies, the increased awareness of T2DM, and the availability of evidence-based Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) support and services, at the local and national level did not positively correlate with the number of T2DM patients with optimal HbA1c level which suggests a gap in practice. The need …

World Bank Education Sector: From Internal And External Perspectives, K. W. Lee, Ahreum Han

Health Care Administration Faculty Research

This paper describes the authors’ almost 30-year (1972-1998) personal experience with the World Bank (WB) education sector operations from the internal perspective. Then, it discusses the authors’ 20-year (1999-2020) observation from an external perspective. The paper aims to reveal the goals, objectives, strategies, the mechanism, and processes of decision-making, especially on how an education loan and credit is justified, of the world’s largest international aid organization for the education sector in developing countries (some $4 billion a year). Through this effort, the author provides a sound basis for insiders’ and outsiders’ fair assessments or criticisms of WB education sector operations. …

Seasonal Variation In Home-Range And Core-Area Size In Verreaux's Sifaka, Brynn Harshbarger Jan 2021

Seasonal Variation In Home-Range And Core-Area Size In Verreaux's Sifaka, Brynn Harshbarger

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Primates living in seasonal forests must adapt to extreme fluctuation in resource availability. Verreaux’s sifaka ( ) live in Madagascar’s highly seasonal tropical dry forests and experience periods of extreme resource abundance and scarcity. Home- range and core-area size were measured using 95% and 50% kernel estimation, and 95% minimum convex polygons to compare seasonal shifts in space use based on resource availability. There have been no long-term space use studies on Verreaux’s sifaka; therefore, we do not know how their space use changes over time in an environment which is both highly seasonal and highly variable. Our study leverages …

Improving Volunteer Retention With Nonprofit Organizations Through Implementing Onboarding Training, Tawanda Lashone Carpenter Jan 2021

Improving Volunteer Retention With Nonprofit Organizations Through Implementing Onboarding Training, Tawanda Lashone Carpenter

Education Projects

Many nonprofit organizations are staples in the community as they provide services for disadvantaged and marginalized groups that seek services that are not easily accessible to them through for-profit organizations. Hence, the retention of volunteers is a challenge for many nonprofit organizations as they depend on volunteers to assist with the day-to-day tasks that cannot be accomplished by paid employees (Garner & Garner, 2011). During the time of this project, One Step Further, Inc. (OSF) Community Support and Nutrition Program (CSNP) was faced to deal with the national pandemic of COVID-19, leaving this organization to depend on paid staff exclusively. …

The church has always responded to the needs (the sick, dying, and hungry) of the community. The church is more than a place to feed the soul; it is a place for healing of the mind, body, and soul. How effective is the church in providing health and wellness education? There has been an increase in domestic attacks on faith-based organizations. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (n.d.) stated that from 2009 to 2019, there have been 37 attacks on houses of worship resulting in 64 people losing their lives. These attacks prompted houses of worship to review their security policies or …

Redesigning An Onboarding Hiring Process For A Local Government Agency, Hannah Angel

Education Projects

Hiring processes are an important process of an organization’s overall employee job satisfaction in the Department of Health and Human Services division. First impressions help establish a long-term relationship between an employee and a company. Onboarding and orientation involving surveys, advisors, and relationships within the company assist in retaining dedicated employees. Follow-up meetings are required to enable a successful team involvement relationship. Job satisfaction ensures a lower turnover rate in the hiring process for the company. Hiring processes involving onboarding and orientation ensure stability, trust, and comfort for the employee within an organization.

Wound Nurse Specialists’ Pressure Injury Knowledge And Specialty Support Surface Preferences, Catherine Koutroumpis Jan 2021

Wound Nurse Specialists’ Pressure Injury Knowledge And Specialty Support Surface Preferences, Catherine Koutroumpis

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

Low-level foam specialty support surfaces are negatively affecting the number of hospital-acquired pressure injuries that occur each year and overall skin health of acute care patients. Lack of knowledge by wound care specialists on different types of therapy could lead to patients not receiving the best possible specialty surfaces available. An online anonymous survey of 19 certified wound care nurses was conducted. The survey examined the nurses’ knowledge of pressure injuries using the Pieper Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge test (PZPUKT) and choice of specialty support surface for prevention of pressure injuries. One hundred percent of nurses scored 80% and higher …

#Audited: Social Media And Tax Enforcement, Michelle Lyon Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

With limited resources and a diminished budget, it is not surprising that the Internal Revenue Service would seek new tools to maximize its enforcement efficiency. Automation and technology provide new opportunities for the IRS, and in turn, present new concerns for taxpayers. In December 2018, the IRS signaled its interest in a tool to access publicly available social media profiles of individuals in order to “expedite IRS case resolution for existing compliance cases.” This has important implications for taxpayer privacy.

Moreover, the use of social media in tax enforcement may pose a particular harm to an especially vulnerable population: low-income …

Deep-sea sponge grounds are hotspots of benthic biomass and diversity. To date, very limited data exist on the range of environmental conditions in areas containing deep-sea sponge grounds and which factors are driving their distribution and sustenance. We investigated oceanographic conditions at a deep-sea sponge ground located on an Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge seamount. Hydrodynamic measurements were performed along Conductivity-Temperature-Depth transects, and a lander was deployed within the sponge ground that recorded near-bottom physical properties as well as vertical fluxes of organic matter over an annual cycle. The data demonstrate that the sponge ground is found at water temperatures of −0.5°C …

Drinking Water Quality And Provision In Six Low-Income, Peri-Urban Communities Of Lusaka, Zambia, Kristen M. Reaver, Jonathan Levy, Imasiku Nyambe, M. Cameron Hay, Sam Mutiti, Rodwell Chandipo, Joseph Meiman

Faculty and Staff Works

Lusaka, Zambia, is a rapidly growing city located on a vulnerable karstic dolomite aquifer that provides most of the city's drinking water. Over 65% of residents live in peri-urban communities with inadequate sanitation leading to widespread groundwater contamination and the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera. To fill the water service gap, Water Trusts were created: public/private partnerships designed to provide clean water to peri-urban community residents. Water Trusts extract groundwater via boreholes, treat it with chlorine, and distribute it to residents via public kiosks. We investigated the efficacy of drinking water provision to residents in six of Lusaka's …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding the response of the coral holobiont to environmental change is crucial to inform conservation efforts. The most pressing problem is “coral bleaching,” usually precipitated by prolonged thermal stress. We used untargeted, polar metabolite profiling to investigate the physiological response of the coral species Montipora capitata and Pocillopora acuta to heat stress. Our goal was to identify diagnostic markers present early in the bleaching response. From the untargeted UHPLC-MS data, a variety of co-regulated dipeptides were found that have the highest differential accumulation in both species. The structures of four dipeptides were determined and showed differential accumulation in symbiotic and …
