Options For Managing Thin Alfalfa Stands, Jimmy C. Henning
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Alfalfa is the highest yielding, highest quality hay crop grown in Kentucky. Well cured alfalfa and alfalfa-grass hay is in high demand for dairy and in particular, horse owners. Alfalfa stands in Kentucky remain productive from four to as long as 8 years or more depending on several factors. Long stand life is favored by:
- Using an improved variety with high resistance to the major diseases of Kentucky and that is proven to be high yielding in relevant trials such as conducted at the University of Kentucky.
- Deep, well drained soils,
- Soils that have been limed to pH 6.8 and …

Lifestyle Modification Interventions in Pregnancy to Reduce Recurrent Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM).
Abstract
Background:In the epidemiologic context of explosion in maternal obesity, the incidence of GDM has significantly increased worldwide. Macrosomia is the most common complication in GDM and the main factor linked to other neonatal complications. Studies suggest that pregnant women with a history of GDM are at increased risk of recurrence.
Aim/Objectives: The primary aim is to determine if lifestyle modification interventions, from the start of pregnancy, will reduce GDM recurrence. Additional objectives include developing written guidelines for implementation of lifestyle modifications to reduce GDM recurrence at my …

The convergence of the health, racial, and economic crises resulting from COVID-19 has exposed long-standing inequities among New York State’s Black communities. The recent, brutal and senseless killings of Black men and women (e.g., George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, among an exceedingly long list of names) have ignited growing national public protests and increasing agreement about the existence of deep-seated racial injustice within systems and institutions and how it has been compounded over time. Taken together, the COVID-19 pandemic and the pandemic of senseless killings of Black people are providing a magnified reflection of the nation’s historic …

Associations Between Dietary Patterns And Inflammatory Markers During Pregnancy: A Systematic Review, Kuan-Lin Yeh, Amber Kautz, Barbara A. Lohse, Susan W. Groth
Articles
Elevated inflammation in pregnancy has been associated with multiple adverse pregnancy outcomes and potentially an increased susceptibility to future chronic disease. How maternal dietary patterns influence systemic inflammation during pregnancy requires further investigation. The purpose of this review was to comprehensively evaluate studies that assessed dietary patterns and inflammatory markers during pregnancy. This review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses. Included studies were sourced from EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus and evaluated using The Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies. Inclusion criteria consisted of human studies published in English between January 2007 …

The Nurturing Care Framework (NCF) calls for establishing a global monitoring and accountability systems for early childhood development (ECD). Major gaps to build low-cost and large-scale ECD monitoring systems at the local level remain. In this manuscript, we describe the process of selecting nurturing care indicators at the municipal level from existing routine information systems to develop the Brazilian Early Childhood Friendly Index (IMAPI). Three methodological steps developed through a participatory decision-making process were followed. First, a literature review identified potential indicators to translate the NCF domains. Four technical panels composed of stakeholders from federal, state and municipal levels were …

Background: The prevalence of hypertension is increasing particularly among obese children and adolescents. Obese children and adolescents with hypertension are likely to remain hypertensive as they reach adulthood and hypertension is linked to an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Twenty-four-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) has become one of the most important tools in diagnosing hypertension in children and adolescents and circadian patterns of blood pressure may be important disease-risk predictors.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted in patients aged 6–21 years who underwent 24-h ABPM at Kentucky Children's Hospital (KCH) from August 2012 through June 2017. Exclusion criteria …

Effects Of Foliar Fungicide On Yield, Micronutrients, And Cadmium In Grains From Historical And Modern Hard Winter Wheat Genotypes, Hollman Motta-Romero, Ferdinand Niyongira, Jeffrey D. Boehm Jr, Devin J. Rose
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Plant breeding and disease management practices have increased the grain yield of hard winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) adapted to the Great Plains of the United States during the last century. However, the effect of genetic gains for seed yield and the application of fungicide on the micronutrient and cadmium (Cd) concentration in wheat grains is still unclear. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of fungicide application on the productivity and nutritional quality of wheat cultivars representing 80 years of plant breeding efforts. Field experiments were conducted over two crop years (2017 and 2018) with eighteen …

The Opioid Crisis Or Climate Change: Which Is More Likely To Succeed Under The Tobacco Litigation Model?, Elizabeth W. De Leon
Texas A&M Law Review
Societal problems can occasionally have legal solutions, and several tools exist to implement change, including litigation and regulation. However, what elements make a societal problem more suitable for litigation or regulation? This Article examines four different societal issues (tobacco use, obesity, opioid addiction, and climate change) to determine whether litigation or regulation is the more appropriate route for success. The tobacco litigation serves as a successful example, while the fast food litigation serves as an unsuccessful example. Six signs of success are derived from the tobacco litigation: a large settlement agreement, evidence of corporate wrongdoing, change in public opinion, the …

From Camp Meetings To Crusades: African American Religious Songs In Context, Konner B. Smith
From Camp Meetings To Crusades: African American Religious Songs In Context, Konner B. Smith
Honors College Theses
The images found throughout African American religious songs are timeless, yet they reflect the realities of their particular historical and cultural contexts, explaining those circumstances from the view of the African American community. Despite the differences in sound, there is a strong sense of continuity between each era, as compositions from slave songs to rap use certain passages from scripture to emphasize the themes of freedom, hope, and perseverance. From the spiritual to the gospel to contemporary religious rap, both history and hope have been lifted up and transformed in the voices of oppressed and enduring African Americans.
