The Use Of Mayflies, Stoneflies And Caddisflies As Indicators Of Fine Sediment Pollution In Salmon-Bearing Streams Of The Pacific Northwest, Cory Michael Mccaffrey
The Use Of Mayflies, Stoneflies And Caddisflies As Indicators Of Fine Sediment Pollution In Salmon-Bearing Streams Of The Pacific Northwest, Cory Michael Mccaffrey
Dissertations and Theses
Fine sediment (particles < 2 mm in diameter) deposition is a natural component of streams but in excess amounts it is harmful to aquatic biota. Fine sediment is the main cause of impairment in streams and rivers of the Pacific Northwest and it can lead to unsuitable spawning and rearing habitat for Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed Salmon and steelhead. From a regulatory perspective, fine sediment presents a challenge because it is difficult to measure in situ and to establish criteria that would indicate stream impairment. Consequently, there is considerable effort to develop biocriteria using stream macroinvertebrates that would help regulators determine if a stream is impaired by excessive fine sediment.
Stream macroinvertebrates are widely used to monitor and assess stream degradation because they are affected by the physical, chemical and biological conditions in a stream. In particular, the stream insects known as mayflies (Ephemeroptera, E), stoneflies (Plecoptera, P) and caddisflies (Trichoptera, T) are commonly used as a metric referred to as EPT richness. EPT taxa are well known as pollutant intolerant …

Type 2 Diabetes - A Change For A Better Life, Hilary Greene
Type 2 Diabetes - A Change For A Better Life, Hilary Greene
MSN Capstone Projects
Cardiovascular disease has been known to be the leading cause of mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. With diabetes on the rise in the United States, it is important to assess changes in these patients to decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular disease or a major cardiovascular event such as a myocardial infarction, stroke, or death. If able to address healthy alternatives to patients to reduce the risks of major cardiovascular events such as a myocardial infarction or stroke, it could potentially save many lives. As a nurse educator, it is important to provide patients with the education they …

Insects Provide Unique Systems To Investigate How Early-Life Experience Alters The Brain And Behavior, Rebecca R. Westwick, Clare C. Rittschof
Entomology Faculty Publications
Early-life experiences have strong and long-lasting consequences for behavior in a surprising diversity of animals. Determining which environmental inputs cause behavioral change, how this information becomes neurobiologically encoded, and the functional consequences of these changes remain fundamental puzzles relevant to diverse fields from evolutionary biology to the health sciences. Here we explore how insects provide unique opportunities for comparative study of developmental behavioral plasticity. Insects have sophisticated behavior and cognitive abilities, and they are frequently studied in their natural environments, which provides an ecological and adaptive perspective that is often more limited in lab-based vertebrate models. A range of cues, …
Assessing Arthropod Responses To Volatile Organic Compounds From The Algal Microbiome Of A Sloth Using Drosophila Melanogaster, Lilli Gordon
Assessing Arthropod Responses To Volatile Organic Compounds From The Algal Microbiome Of A Sloth Using Drosophila Melanogaster, Lilli Gordon
Honors Theses
Sloths contain an unexplored ecosystem of microbial diversity in their fur, including algae, fungi, bacteria, and arthropods. These symbionts are able to communicate through the chemicals they release, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can lead to unique ecological interactions. The VOCs released from the algal polycultures of sloth hairs merit further investigation in their ability to cause a response from other organisms in this microbial community and within a broader ecological context. This research team aimed to assess the response of Drosophila melanogaster as test subjects when exposed to VOCs of the algal microbiome of a sloth. Exploratory research …

Journey Into Midnight: Population Dynamics, Vertical Distribution, And Trophic Ecology Of Whalefishes (Cetomimidae) In The Bathypelagic Gulf Of Mexico, Rachel Eckley
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Despite comprising the largest biome on Earth, the bathypelagic zone inhabitants represent a “black hole” in the understanding of deep-oceanic functioning due to physical and monetary limitations. The characteristics of the global bathypelagic realm create a limiting environment only inhabitable by specially adapted fauna. These include whalefishes (Stephanoberycoidei: Cetomimidae), which are a taxonomically and systematically challenging group of primarily bathypelagic fishes.
Cetomimids were collected in the Gulf of Mexico using high-speed rope trawls and a multiple-opening-and-closing net system. Population dynamics were described using morphometric analysis. Vertical distributions, including diel variation, were described using a modified boxplot of abundance standardized by …

Blue Jay Call Profile In Disparate Environments, Daniel A. Gesualdi
Blue Jay Call Profile In Disparate Environments, Daniel A. Gesualdi
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Many species of birds have been observed to develop higher-pitched calls in urban environments; however local Blue Jays are unstudied (Mockford and Marshall, 2009). The urban environment's high noise pollution imposes a significant fitness challenge; then, the urban Jay calls will be different (higher) than rural Jay(Parris and Schneider, 2009). A series of recordings were taken in rural and urban environments; it was clear that there is a significant increase in maximum and minimum kHz in urban jays than rural jays. These results suggest that blue jays alter their calls to accommodate the environmental factors in urban settings similar to …

Veganism: The Diet For The Environment, Gavin Plimpton
Student Work
Veganism is a lifestyle that can allow for the individual to reduce their own carbon footprint on the world. In order to accomplish this one must remove all animal products from their life to maximize the reduction of carbon emissions they produce in a year. This comes from the meat and animal product industry producing far more carbon emissions than that of non-animal products. The animal product industry requires much more land use than that of the non-animal product industry in regard to food. If someone can decide that certain animal products are not necessary in their life than they …

A Lasting Impression? A Study Of Middle Kingdom Seal Impressions From Elephantine Island, Katherine Margaret Consola
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Sealing as a practice in ancient Egypt has been attested by thousands of exemplars recovered from archaeological sites. Seals have been found in cemeteries, settlements, and military forts, which suggests they had a multifaceted use as administrative tools and religious amulets. Preserved mud sealings are equally informative, since complete sealings hold the negative impression of the seal inscription and the surface they were adhered to, such as fabric, wood, or papyrus. The present study analyzes a corpus of 423 seal impressions from a Middle Kingdom settlement site on Elephantine Island excavated by the Realities of Life project from the German …

The Role Of Caffeine, Nicotine And Theobromine In The Biodiversity And Function Of The Human Gut Microbiome, Thomas Stanila
The Role Of Caffeine, Nicotine And Theobromine In The Biodiversity And Function Of The Human Gut Microbiome, Thomas Stanila
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The human gut microbiome plays a fundamental role in physiological processes and homeostatic relationships in the body, with research proving its effects beyond gastrointestinal functioning such as in immune response, psychological operation, and nutritional metabolism. Caffeine, nicotine, and theobromine—the principal bioactive compounds in regularly consumed products like coffee, cigarettes, and dark chocolate, respectively—may yield significant and variable influences on human health beyond their normal pharmacodynamics through affecting gut microbiota. Using metagenomic modelling, predictions can be determined regarding intestinal community activity as well. I hypothesize that the compounds will alter microbial community composition in a time- and dose-dependent manner.
