A large body of literature has investigated the relationship between health literacy and diabetic self- management and diabetic outcomes. Health literacy is a set of skills needed to make informed health decisions and effectively navigate the healthcare system. Barriers and low health literacy have been linked to over $200 billion in additional medical costs annually and poorer diabetic patient outcomes. Routine screening of health literacy has not been shown to improve diabetic outcomes and is not recommended. Instead, multiple professional medical organizations have endorsed using universal health literacy precautions to provide clear and comprehensible information for all patients. This paper …

Animal-Assisted Therapy In Medical Settings: Benefits And Limitations, Angelina Failla
Academic Festival
Animal-Assisted Therapy is a widely growing medical practice that utilizes animals in therapeutic settings. This form of therapy has numerous health benefits on the physical and mental welfare of people, and it can be practiced in many ways to suit their individual needs. However, what many tend to forget is that the welfare of the animals must also be prioritized. Also, despite the growing research on the subject, there's still plenty of areas where the research can be improved. With both the pros and the cons in mind, it's important to come up with new solutions, backed by academic evidence …

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
Homelessness is an increasing problem with various implications on individual’s physical, mental, and occupational wellness (Tsang et al., 2013). Occupational therapy is positioned to provide holistic, client-centered, and trauma-informed care to those experiencing homelessness (Salsi et al., 2017). While residents at Valley Rescue Women and Children’s Center (Valley Rescue) have access to a variety of services, occupation-based education and interventions are extremely limited. This paper describes the completion of a capstone experience at Valley Rescue, with a focus in program development and advocacy. Residents of the shelter expressed interest in education on mental health and wellness and occupational engagement. Throughout …

Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic worsened financial stress for higher education students in the U.S. Financial stress is associated with poor dietary behaviors; however, factors that might influence this relationship are not well characterized. The present cross-sectional study investigated the associations between financial stress and dietary intake and dietary risk scores among higher education students (undergraduate and graduate students) in the U.S. and examined whether poor sleep quality and short sleep duration mediated the relationship between financial stress and dietary risk score. Validated tools were used to assess financial stress, sleep quality, sleep duration, dietary intake, and dietary risk. …

Introduction: Understanding, categorizing, and using implementation science theories, models, and frameworks is a complex undertaking. The issues involved are even more challenging given the large number of frameworks and that some of them evolve significantly over time. As a consequence, researchers and practitioners may be unintentionally mischaracterizing frameworks or basing actions and conclusions on outdated versions of a framework. Methods: This paper addresses how the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance) framework has been described, summarizes how the model has evolved over time, and identifies and corrects several misconceptions. Results: We address 13 specific areas where misconceptions have been …

A Draft: Up N’ Upper Or Sisyphus Lounge; Notes, Poems & Essays From The Road & The Cabin, Andrew M. Foster
Theses and Dissertations
This text imagines a reconciliation where the slick, sterile nature of contemporary objects and conditions might offer a sort of soft retreat. Sisyphus Lounge, a modular installation of light, near-defunct-technologies and carefully cluttered “stuff,” attempts to locate and explore value systems fogged by dis/information and the impossibility to articulate is-ness.

Don't Be Such A Buzzy®Kill: Reducing Pain During Vaccinations In College-Age Students, Katherine Long
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Immunizations play a fundamental role in reducing the occurrence of preventable diseases in the population. Injections related to immunization are the most frequent pain-producing medical procedure implemented worldwide and account for nearly 12 billion injections annually (CDC, 2019; Taddio et al., 2015). These procedures are often perceived as simple but can have a variety of complications including pain. This evidence-based practice project addressed the following PICOT question: In college-aged students receiving immunizations (P), does the Buzzy® device (I) when compared to non-intervention standard of care (C) effectively reduce injection site pain (O) over a 12-week time period (T)? The Buzzy® …

Influences Of Sleep Disturbances And Mild Traumatic Brain Injury On Gait Performance Among College Student-Athletes, Narjes Asgari
Health and Kinesiology Theses
Sleep disturbances from stress are common among college students. In addition, student-athletes in contact sports (e.g., football and soccer) are at a higher risk of receiving a mild traumatic brain injury(mTBI). Stress-related sleep disturbances and mTBI may provoke cognitive and brain changes associated with gait abnormalities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the association between stress, sleep disturbances, mTBI, and gait performance among college student-athletes. Twelve college student-athletes from men’s and women’s soccer teams who indicated a history of mTBI (experimental group) and twenty-eight college students without a history of mTBI (control group) were recruited and asked …

Raman Spectroscopic Characterisation Of Non Stimulated And Stimulated Human Whole Saliva, Genecy Calado, Isha Behl, Hugh Byrne, Fiona Lyng
Articles
Human saliva is a unique biofluid which can reflect the physiopathological state of an individual. The wide spectrum of molecules present in saliva, compounded by the close association of salivary composition to serum metabolites, can provide valuable information for clinical diagnostic applications through highly sensitive vibrational spectroscopic techniques such as Raman spectroscopy. However, the nature of saliva, in terms of collection and patient-related characteristics, can be considered factors which may strongly affect the Raman spectral profile of salivary samples and disrupt the search for specific salivary biomarkers in the detection of diseases. The main objective of this study was to …

"Our hypothesis, which is largely complementary to Wrangham, is that band elders engaged in infanticide and direct and indirect child homicide against the offspring of reactive aggressive adults through decisions during the foraging period of the Middle and Upper Pleistocene. We hypothesize that elders may have targeted the offspring of reactively aggressive males (and females) as retaliation for behaviors that were not good for the elders or their offspring and because surreptitiously killing the offspring of violent males was much less dangerous to the elders than killing the violent males. Such retaliation could have selected against reactive aggression as a …
