Research Trends In Amish Population Health, A Growing Literature About A Growing Rural Population, Cory Anderson, Lindsey Potts

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The Amish are an endogamous rural population experiencing rapid growth; consequently, they have attracted the attention of population health researchers and service providers. With approximately one quarter of all Amish studies publications now devoted to population health (n=246), the time is ripe to review research trends. Using bibliometric measures, we map the genealogy, influence, and configuration of Amish health publications. Amish population health research has (1) a health culture-focused core with clusters representing social science and health practice, (2) peripheral clusters addressing health conditions–mental, physical, and injury/safety–and (3) several clusters straddling both. We identify fruitful interdisciplinary studies and recommend researchers …

Sled Dogs As A Model For Studying Dietary Vitamin D, Kali Striker May 2021

Sled Dogs As A Model For Studying Dietary Vitamin D, Kali Striker

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) has become a pandemic and has shown to be correlated with several poor health outcomes. Many factors that lead to VDD are environmental and lifestyle. Vitamin D has physiological implications involved in all areas of human health and is also important for animal health. Canines have shown adverse health outcomes similar to humans that correlate with vitamin D deficiency such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) and irritable bowel disease (IBD). Canine vitamin D requirements are largely unknown due to the lack of research and the wide ranges of supplementation throughout dog food manufacturers. Pre-active plasma vitamin …

Contextualizing The Development Of Coastal Adaptations In Postglacial Southeast Alaska, Nicholas S. Schmuck May 2021

Contextualizing The Development Of Coastal Adaptations In Postglacial Southeast Alaska, Nicholas S. Schmuck

Anthropology

The goal of this dissertation is to improve our understanding of human population expansions into unfamiliar environments, focusing on when and how humans adapted to the rich coastal landscape of Southeast Alaska. Investigation of the peopling of this region has been overshadowed by the broader narrative that the Americas may have been first colonized by a late Pleistocene coastal migration. Refinements to local sea-level and paleoecological chronologies help contextualize the dynamic landscape that these first inhabitants might have encountered, returning focus to the archaeology of Southeast Alaska itself. This research considers existing archaeological data within the theoretical framework of Human …

Utility Of Trace Element Studies For Improving Our Understanding Of Geochemical Processes Within The Arctic Ocean Environment, Channing Bolt May 2021

Utility Of Trace Element Studies For Improving Our Understanding Of Geochemical Processes Within The Arctic Ocean Environment, Channing Bolt

Oceanography

The Arctic Ocean is a dynamic region undergoing rapid change. Sea ice and meteoric water are intrinsic components of the Arctic environment that play key roles in its ecosystem, including the distributions and cycling of trace elements throughout the pan-Arctic Ocean. Meteoric water (e.g., rivers and snow deposition) contributes to the input of trace elements to surface waters, while sea ice dynamics contribute to the transport of these constituents across Arctic basins. Trace element distributions can provide insights into Arctic processes. The focus of Chapter One is on particulate (>0.2 μm) trace elements in Arctic pack ice, associated snow, …

Identification Of Binding Regions Of Bilirubin In The Ligand-Binding Pocket Of The Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-A (Pparalpha), Darren M. Gordon, Stephen H. Hong, Zachary A. Kipp, Terry D. Hinds Jr. May 2021

Hinds Jr.

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Recent work has shown that bilirubin has a hormonal function by binding to the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα), a nuclear receptor that drives the transcription of genes to control adiposity. Our previous in silico work predicted three potential amino acids that bilirubin may interact with by hydrogen bonding in the PPARα ligand-binding domain (LBD), which could be responsible for the ligand-induced function. To further reveal the amino acids that bilirubin interacts with in the PPARα LBD, we harnessed bilirubin’s known fluorescent properties when bound to proteins such as albumin. Our work here revealed that bilirubin interacts with threonine 283 (T283) …

How Aspen Tree Height Influences Aspen Leaf Miner (Phyllocnistis Populiella) Oviposition And Performance, Giovanni Tundo May 2021

How Aspen Tree Height Influences Aspen Leaf Miner (Phyllocnistis Populiella) Oviposition And Performance, Giovanni Tundo

Biological Sciences

Under the optimal oviposition theory, insects are expected to lay eggs on hosts that maximize the success of their offspring. Tree height is known to be an important factor influencing the distribution of phytophagous insects because some species perform better at a distinct range of heights. This difference in performance could lead to incorrect estimates of population parameters if surveys are only conducted on one host plant height. Aspen leaf miners (Phyllocnistis populiella) have undergone a major outbreak in interior Alaska over the last two decades. We quantified patterns of aspen leaf miner oviposition and juvenile survival over 2 years …

Eras Protocol For Lower Extremity Orthopedic Procedures, Tyler Mcdonald, Joshua Vaughn May 2021

Eras Protocol For Lower Extremity Orthopedic Procedures, Tyler Mcdonald, Joshua Vaughn

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The demand for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) will continue to rise as life expectancy increases. Coupling increased age with the increased prevalence of both obesity and osteoarthritis, the need for total joint arthroplasties is likely to increase (Oseka & Pecka, 2018). The frequency of arthroplasty procedures and the associated recovery period lead to heavy economic demands felt by most healthcare systems (Stowers et al., 2016). To address this burden, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have been implemented at institutions and are designed to improve patient outcomes while simultaneously limiting cost and reducing readmission rates …

Salmonid Distribution Models To Support Restoration Planning Across The Fragmented Chehalis River Basin, Wa, Eric J. Walther May 2021

Salmonid Distribution Models To Support Restoration Planning Across The Fragmented Chehalis River Basin, Wa, Eric J. Walther

Fisheries

Understanding the factors that influence the distribution of species through time and across space is a fundamental goal of ecology and crucial information needed to effectively manage and recover populations. Anthropogenic fragmentation of habitat disrupts ecological processes and is an on-going threat to species persistence across taxa. River ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to disruptions in connectivity and are the focus of extensive restoration efforts and financial investment. For example, over $300 million/year is invested towards restoration in the Columbia River basin. However, restoration is often impeded by knowledge gaps in distribution that can result in omitting locations that would benefit …

Influence Of Environmental Attributes On Intertidal Community Structure In Glacial Estuaries, Mary K. Mccabe May 2021

Influence Of Environmental Attributes On Intertidal Community Structure In Glacial Estuaries, Mary K. Mccabe

Marine Biology

High-latitude coastal environments are experiencing dramatic changes due to climate warming. Increased glacier discharge rates modulate downstream environmental conditions in coastal watersheds. These fast-changing environments are predicted to influence the structure of nearshore marine communities. Here, rocky intertidal community structure, recruitment of key organisms, and environmental correlates were examined at nine watersheds in two regions (Kachemak Bay and Lynn Canal) that bookend the Gulf of Alaska, which were separated by approximately 1000km. Each watershed was part of a gradient in each of the regions that spanned 0-60% glacial coverage. Percent cover, biomass surveys, and recruitment of intertidal organisms, along with …

Addressing A Complex Resource Conflict: Humans, Sea Otters, And Shellfish In Southeast Alaska, Sonia Natalie Ibarra

Fisheries

Complex resource conflicts may benefit from the inclusion of social-ecological systems approaches that recognize the complex linkages between humans and their environment. Competition for shared shellfish resources by sea otters and humans in Southeast Alaska has caused food security concerns, cultural and economic losses, and uncertainty about the future of various fisheries, including rural subsistence-based fisheries. In rural Alaska Native communities, access to subsistence resources are critical to maintaining a way of life, with deeply rooted knowledge systems that are tied to the land, water, and natural resources. This dissertation documents Indigenous and local knowledge of Alaska Native customary and …
