International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 14(4): 885-901, 2021. Law enforcement agencies often conduct academy training classes that include recruits hired by both the larger hosting agency (HA), and by smaller participating agencies (PA). HAs that need to fill more positions may have recruits with a wide range of fitness levels. Smaller agencies may be more selective in their hiring as they do not have as many available positions. This study compared HA and PA recruit fitness prior to academy. Retrospective analysis was conducted on 11 academy classes, incorporating 742 HA recruits (602 males, 140 females) and 99 PA recruits (82 …

Revenge Of The Fallen, Mary Oves Jun 2021

Revenge Of The Fallen, Mary Oves

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

I stared in horror. “What did you do?” I had just arrived home from errands to what looked like a culinary bludgeoning. A sink filled with pots and pans, dishes covered in cement-hardened egg vomit, and coffee mugs filled with solidified gray-flecked bacon grease. Toast crumbs flecked the counters, butter splotched the surfaces, and bacon grease spittles covered the stovetop grates, the hood, the microwave and the backsplash.

Creating Modern Technological System For Grass Product Processing To Guarantee Macroscopic Food Security, Tianwei Wang, Jin Zhong Jun 2021

Creating Modern Technological System For Grass Product Processing To Guarantee Macroscopic Food Security, Tianwei Wang, Jin Zhong

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

The construction of a scientific and technological system of ecological grass-based livestock husbandry (GLiH) provides technical support for the "Macroscopic Food Security" concept and the "National Strategy of Giving Priority to Ecology and Green Development" in the new era. At the same time, it represents an urgent need for the domestic circulation. Scientific grass processing and production of forage grass can help form the GLiH industrial chain by connecting the front-end "forage grass cultivating" and back-end "livestock raising". However, China still faces many problems in terms of forage grass processing and production, and the development of the grass industry. On …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

China enters into a new era with high demand for nutritional and healthy food, and hence needs to adjust the agricultural production system to balance cereal production and livestock farming. Between the years 2010-2019 the production of red meat and milk has fallen far behind the consumption demand, resulting in sourcing and import of large quantity of red meat and milk products from the international market. In comparison to the average consumption levels in Asia and global, China's consumption will continue to grow in the future, presenting a great challenge to the goals of 85% self-sufficiency rate for beef and …

When examining a product in the store, users can use augmented reality (AR) devices to research the product. However, unlike in online shopping, making product comparisons while shopping in the store is time-consuming, burdensome, and error prone. This disclosure describes the use of object recognition techniques to enable AR-based visual searches and product comparisons. With user permission, products in the user’s field of view are detected and identified, and a dynamic buffer of product information is maintained. The buffer serves to transform the searches for individual products within a visual search session into a ranked list that can be sorted …

Analyzing Intramural Sport Participation At The State University Of New York College At Cortland 2021, Stephen D'Alessandro

Master's Theses

SUNY Cortland has historically had a robust and active Intramural Sports program. The program saw 2,380 students participate during the Spring 2016 semester, but that number has steadily declined in recent years. In the Fall 2019 semester, the participation rate had fallen to 1,482 participants. Research has been conducted on the topic, although it is not applicable to SUNY Cortland. Past research on intramural participation has focused on constraints to participation, finding a lack of time a primary constraint However, the research is 15 years old and conducted at universities with vastly different demographics than SUNY Cortland. The promotion of ketone body (KB) metabolism via ketosis has been suggested as a strategy to increase exercise performance. However, studies in humans and animals have yielded inconsistent results. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of ketosis, achieved via fasting or a short-term ketogenic diet (KD), on endurance exercise performance in female mice. After 8 h of fasting, serum KB significantly increased and serum glucose significantly decreased in fasted compared to fed mice. When subjected to an endurance exercise capacity (EEC) test on a motorized treadmill, both fed and fasted mice showed similar EEC performance. …

Remission Of Type 2 Diabetes With Very Low-Calorie Diets —A Narrative Review, Susan Juray, Kathleen V. Axen, Steven Trasino

Publications and Research

Very low-calorie diets (VLCD) are hypocaloric dietary regimens of approximately 400–800 kcal/day that result in 20–30% reductions in body weight, sometimes in just 12–16 weeks. A body of evidence demonstrates that adherence to VLCD in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) can result in marked improvements to glycemic control and even full T2D remission, challenging the convention that T2D is a lifelong disease. Although these data are promising, the majority of VLCD studies have focused on weight loss and not T2D remission as a primary endpoint. Moreover, there is a wide range of VLCD protocols and definitions of T2D remission …
