The Mother's Lived Experience Of Breastfeeding In The First 4 Weeks Postpartum: A Heideggerian Hermeneutic Phenomenological Analysis, Stacy Rosales

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to more fully understand, in their own words, the experiences of mothers who began breastfeeding their infant after birth and may or may not have been breasting at four weeks postpartum. A single research question guided this study: What are the lived experiences of breastfeeding mothers during the first four weeks postpartum? Eight mothers who delivered in the past four to six weeks were interviewed. Data were analyzed using a Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological approach. This method was chosen because it allowed the researcher to conduct interviews and explore the lived experience of breastfeeding mothers …

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is one of the leading causes of death in infants related to the degeneration of neurons. Currently, there are no curative treatment options for SMA, and many options available may not be feasible. This review presents the background, clinical studies, and indications for the use of Risdiplam in treating SMA. SMA causes a decrease in the production of survival motor neuron proteins (SMN) and current treatments target to increase the expression of SMN. Risdiplam is the first and only oral medication to be approved to treat SMA. As an SMN2 splicing modifier, it has provided stronger …

Income Predicts Fpg, But Food Security Is The Mediator, Amy Blansit

eJournal of Public Affairs

This research was aimed at studying the RISE pilot program and stability factors of low socioeconomic groups. Self-sufficiency programs focus on households moving from crisis to empowerment; no longer relying on subsidies. Gaining employment and housing alone do not create socioeconomic stability. It was therefore determined that the RISE Program should be evaluated to determine the effectiveness at ending dependency. Methods: Thirty-four (30.6%) participants were included in this evaluation. Using logistic regression techniques, sixteen items on the RISE Self-sufficiency Assessment were explored. Results: RISE participants derived significant economic benefits, and that food security seemed to be the greatest mediator of …

"Not For Human Consumption": Prison Food's Absent Regulatory Regime, Amanda Chan, Anna Nathanson

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Prison food is poor quality. The regulations which govern prison food are subpar and unenforceable by prisoners, due in large part to Sandin v. Conner and the Prison Litigation Reform Act. This Article aims to draw attention to the dire food conditions in prisons, explain the lax federal administrative law that permits these conditions, highlight the role of Sandin v. Conner and the Prison Litigation Reform Act in curtailing prisoners’ rights, and criticize the role of the private entity American Correctional Association in enabling mass neglect of prison food. The authors recommend that the Prison Litigation Reform Act be repealed, …

Improving K-12 Education For Hispanic Students In Las Vegas And Beyond, Richard Reeves, Ember Smith

Policy Briefs and Reports

Public K-12 education serves as a launching pad for economic mobility and opportunity, preparing students for college or a good-paying job. Despite K-12 education’s influence on later-in-life outcomes, schools often underserve students of color. Hispanic students in particular constitute a significant and growing portion of the U.S. student population yet are often overlooked in education literature because they are not the lowest performing demographic. In this brief, we examine how well public K-12 education serves Hispanic students in Clark County, where nearly half of students are Hispanic. We then consider factors that may influence student performance, including both in-school factors …

Cerebrum, Liver, And Muscle Regulatory Networks Uncover Maternal Nutrition Effects In Developmental Programming Of Beef Cattle During Early Pregnancy, Wellison J.S. Diniz, Matthew S. Crouse, Robert A. Cushman, Kyle J. Mclean, Joel S. Caton, Carl R. Dahlen, Lawrence P. Reynolds, Alison K. Ward

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The molecular basis underlying fetal programming in response to maternal nutrition remains unclear. Herein, we investigated the regulatory relationships between genes in fetal cerebrum, liver, and muscle tissues to shed light on the putative mechanisms that underlie the effects of early maternal nutrient restriction on bovine developmental programming. To this end, cerebrum, liver, and muscle gene expression were measured with RNA-Seq in 14 fetuses collected on day 50 of gestation from dams fed a diet initiated at breeding to either achieve 60% (RES, n= 7) or 100% (CON, n= 7) of energy requirements. To build a tissue-to-tissue gene network, we …

Examination Of Intuitive Eating At The Momentary Level, Jamie M. Smith Jul 2021

Examination Of Intuitive Eating At The Momentary Level, Jamie M. Smith

Psychology ETDs

Background: Intuitive eating involves following internal cues of hunger and satiety to guide eating choices, as opposed to responding to external signals, strong emotions, or dietary rules. This style of eating consistently has been shown to be related to better physical and psychological health indicators. This construct would be better understood if studied at the individual momentary level instead of globally or cross-sectionally. Therefore, the proposed study sought to employ ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine the validity of intuitive eating at the momentary level. Additionally, the acceptance and expanded acceptance models of intuitive eating and the roles of weight …

Neurosurgery Articles

Homozygous deletion of methylthioadenosine phosphorylase (MTAP) in cancers such as glioblastoma represents a potentially targetable vulnerability. Homozygous MTAP-deleted cell lines in culture show elevation of MTAP's substrate metabolite, methylthioadenosine (MTA). High levels of MTA inhibit protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), which sensitizes MTAP-deleted cells to PRMT5 and methionine adenosyltransferase 2A (MAT2A) inhibition. While this concept has been extensively corroborated in vitro, the clinical relevance relies on exhibiting significant MTA accumulation in human glioblastoma. In this work, using comprehensive metabolomic profiling, we show that MTA secreted by MTAP-deleted cells in vitro results in high levels of extracellular MTA. We further demonstrate …

Effect Of Forage Management Strategies And Land Use Change On Nitrogen Budget And Soil Health Parameters In Pasture Systems, Yili Meng Jul 2021

Effect Of Forage Management Strategies And Land Use Change On Nitrogen Budget And Soil Health Parameters In Pasture Systems, Yili Meng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Pastures produce hay for livestock, and they conserve soil, water, and air resources. However, high nitrogen (N) fertilizer demands in pasture production have significant implication on greenhouse gas emission and environmental pollution. Appropriate forage management strategies can reduce environmental N loss and improve soil health, to enhance the long-term pasture productivity. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the effects of management strategies on N budgets and soil health parameters in subtropical pastures. Both field and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of N stabilizers including urease inhibitor and nitrification inhibitor on pasture yield, greenhouse gas emission, …

Economic Development, The Nutrition Trap And Metabolic Disease, Nancy Luke, Kaivan Munshi, Anu Mary Oommen, Swapnil Singh

Discussion Papers

This research provides a single explanation for: (i) the persistence of malnutrition and (ii) the increased prevalence of metabolic disease (diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease) among normal weight individuals with economic development. Our model is based on a set point for BMI or bodyweight that is adapted to conditions of scarcity in the pre-modern economy, but which subsequently fails to adjust to rapid economic change. During the process of development, some individuals thus remain at their low-BMI set point, despite the increase in their consumption, while others who have escaped the nutrition trap (but are not necessarily overweight) are at increased …

A questionnaire was distributed to settings to be filled out by parents/carers, measuring occupation, living situation and the number of children in the family, …

The Effect Of Chlorhexidine Mouthwash Vs Propolis Mouthwash On The Nitrate-Reducing Activity Of Oral Bacteria And Vascular Control In Healthy Individuals, Stephanie Ellis Jul 2021

The Effect Of Chlorhexidine Mouthwash Vs Propolis Mouthwash On The Nitrate-Reducing Activity Of Oral Bacteria And Vascular Control In Healthy Individuals, Stephanie Ellis

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Nitrate and nitrite molecules are involved in the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous vasodilatory molecule, via the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway. Oral bacteria are responsible for the reduction of nitrate to nitrite making them important regulators in NO production and vascular control. This paper aimed to investigate whether a laboratory-made propolis mouthwash maintained the oral nitrate reducing capacity (ONRC) of commensal bacteria compared with a chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash and the effects of this on vascular function in healthy individuals. Twenty-eight healthy participants visited the laboratory on two occasions where anthropometric, ONRC, blood pressure and vascular function data were collected. Between …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Platelet extravasation during inflammation is under-appreciated. In wild-type (WT) mice, a central corneal epithelial abrasion initiates neutrophil (PMN) and platelet extravasation from peripheral limbal venules. The same injury in mice expressing low levels of the β2-integrin, CD18 (CD18hypo mice) shows reduced platelet extravasation with PMN extravasation apparently unaffected. To better define the role of CD18 on platelet extravasation, we focused on two relevant cell types expressing CD18: PMNs and mast cells. Following corneal abrasion in WT mice, we observed not only extravasated PMNs and platelets but also extravasated erythrocytes (RBCs). Ultrastructural observations of engorged limbal venules showed platelets and RBCs …
