Effects Of The In Ovo Injection And Dietary Supplementation Of L-Ascorbic Acid On The Performance, Tissue L-Ascorbic Acid Concentrations, Inflammatory Response, And Trachea Histomorphology Of Ross 708 Broilers Raised Under Normal And Elevated Atmospheric Ammonia Levels, Ayoub Mousstaaid
Theses and Dissertations
Effects of various levels of L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) (12 and 25 mg) in ovo injected at 17 and 18 days of incubation, on embryonic and posthatch physiological variables in Ross 708 broilers were investigated. There were no significant treatment effects on the hatchability or serum concentrations of L-AA in the broilers. Eye L-AA concentrations were higher, and plasma nitric oxide levels were lower in male chicks treated in ovo with 12 mg of L-AA. While exposed to elevated atmospheric NH3 levels, the in ovo injection of 12 mg of L-AA increased the body weight gain and decreased the feed conversion …
Effects Of Year-Round Supplemental Feeding Of White-Tailed Deer On Plant Community Dynamics, Beau Navarre
Effects Of Year-Round Supplemental Feeding Of White-Tailed Deer On Plant Community Dynamics, Beau Navarre
Theses and Dissertations
Supplemental feeding is commonly practiced to enhance available nutrition for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). The effects of supplemental feeding on the surrounding vegetative community may be related to herbivory, trampling, and seed dispersal. I evaluated how these potential mechanisms affect vegetative communities using a matched-pair design (fed and ecologically equivalent unfed sites) during 2018-2020. In a short-term manipulative portion of the study, I sampled the vegetation prior to feeding and during two years of feeding. In a long-term retrospective study, I sampled feeders established 5-7 years previously. Feeders increased daily detection rate of deer and seed dispersing non-target wildlife, percentage …
Effects Of Acute, Chronic, And Cyclical Hypoxia On The Physiology And Transcriptome Of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Brian Ott
Theses and Dissertations
Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) are raised for aquaculture in ponds characterized by dramatic swings in dissolved oxygen concentration. If morning dissolved oxygen concentration falls below approximately 3.0 mg/L catfish consume less feed, leading to a reduction in growth and production. Although the effects of low oxygen on channel catfish appetite have been described, the underlying mechanisms responsible for those effects are unknown. Increased production of the neuropeptides corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and urotensin I (UI) are implicated in other fishes as neuropeptides that reduce appetite once an environmental stressor is detected. This project characterizes the hematological responses and transcriptional response of …

Linking Remotely-Sensed Uas Imagery To Forage Quality In An Experimental Grazing System, Durham Alexander Norman
Linking Remotely-Sensed Uas Imagery To Forage Quality In An Experimental Grazing System, Durham Alexander Norman
Theses and Dissertations
Forage quality is a principal factor in managing both herbivores and the landscapes they use. Nutrition varies across the landscape, and in turn, so do the distributions of these populations. With the rise of remote sensing technologies (i.e. satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles, and multi/hyperspectral sensors), comes the ability to index forage health and nutrition swiftly. However, no methodology has been developed which allows managers to use unmanned aerial systems to the fullest capacity. The following methodologies produce compelling evidence for predicting forage quality metrics (such as fiber, carbohydrates, and digestibility) using 5 measured bands of reflectance (Blue, Green, Red, Red …

Assessing Capabilities Of Thermal Imaging Technologies Equipped To Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (Suas) To Detect Grassland Bird Nests, Lori Hearon
Theses and Dissertations
North American grassland bird populations are declining more rapidly than other groups of birds. A well-established method of quantifying and monitoring grassland bird populations is by locating active nests. Active nests are often difficult to locate in grassland swards due to the varying heights within the canopy that nests are established. Studies quantifying grassland bird populations have low statistical power due to low sample sizes and high disturbance. Advances in small, unmanned aerial systems and thermographic imaging technologies have potential to improve efficiency of locating nests throughout canopies. This study explored detection accuracy of using thermal imagery to identify simulated …
Utilization Of Bioinformatic And Next Generation Sequencing Approaches For The Discovery Of Predictive Biomarkers And Molecular Pathways Involved In Bovine Respiratory Disease, Matthew Adam Scott
Utilization Of Bioinformatic And Next Generation Sequencing Approaches For The Discovery Of Predictive Biomarkers And Molecular Pathways Involved In Bovine Respiratory Disease, Matthew Adam Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a highly dynamic disease complex that results from host, microbial agent, and environmental interactions. Despite nearly a century of targeted research, BRD remains the most economically damaging disease in beef cattle production and appears to be increasing in global incidence. While modern modalities for BRD detection exist, clinical diagnosis and management decisions largely depend upon clinical observations and their associated risk of disease. Though these approaches lack precision, they remain in use for many reasons, including fiscal and time constraints within beef production systems. Advancements in high-throughput sequencing have demonstrated the ability to provide insight …
The Effects Of Year-Round Supplemental Feeding Of White-Tailed Deer On Sources Of Disease, Miranda Hsiang-Ning Jacobson Huang
The Effects Of Year-Round Supplemental Feeding Of White-Tailed Deer On Sources Of Disease, Miranda Hsiang-Ning Jacobson Huang
Theses and Dissertations
Supplemental feeding of deer is a common management action. However, concentrating animals, as feeding does, is known to promote the transmission of disease. We examined how feeding alters three sources of disease: aflatoxins, gastrointestinal parasites, and ticks. To do this, we paired 79 feeder sites throughout Mississippi with ecologically-equivalent sites without feeders. Wildlife visitation increased at feeders compared to sites without feeders. For aflatoxins, we sampled during the summer and hunting season and found low prevalence and levels in feeders and bagged/bulk feed. The greater concern was environmental exposure to aflatoxins. All corn piles exposed to environmental contamination in July …
Identification And Analysis Of Genes Associated With Drought Tolerance In Rice, Muteb Daham Q Alrifdi
Identification And Analysis Of Genes Associated With Drought Tolerance In Rice, Muteb Daham Q Alrifdi
Theses and Dissertations
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important crop cultivated worldwide, and abiotic stresses limit its productivity. Different approaches were carried out to understand the mechanisms of rice defense responses against abiotic stresses, mainly drought. The NADPH-generating enzymes engaged in response to dehydration and salt stresses during the seedling stage of Nipponbare cultivar were analyzed. Enzyme activities of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH), NADP-dependent aldehyde dehydrogenase, NADP-malic enzyme (NADP-ME) in leaves, and 6PGDH in roots were significantly increased in response to dehydration stress. NADP-ME and NADP-glutamate dehydrogenase activities in roots increased significantly in response to salt stress. These results suggest the involvement of …

Development And Evaluation Of Ground And Aerial Robotic Systems In Commercial Poultry Houses, Pratik Parajuli
Theses and Dissertations
The live production sector of the poultry industry has a growing interest in robotics. Robotics have the possibility to monitor environmental conditions, assess bird welfare, and reduce labor for farm workers and owners. However, interactions of poultry with robotic systems in commercial poultry house environments is largely unknown. Therefore, the goal of this research was to assess the effect of ground and aerial robots on bird stress using avoidance distance (AD) and fleeing speed (FS) as indirect indicators. A low-cost, autonomous robot was also developed to aid in collecting data on environmental conditions in commercial broiler houses. AD and FS …
A Zoological Spectacular: Conservation In An American Zoo, Rita Bouwens
A Zoological Spectacular: Conservation In An American Zoo, Rita Bouwens
Theses and Dissertations
Accredited US zoos aim to support wildlife conservation and educate and influence the public and create a conservation-minded community by curating immersive multispecies experiences. In this case study, I examine how zoos may practice conservation through the frameworks of biopolitics, spectacle, affect, and mainstream conservation paradigms. To conduct this research, I interviewed 10 zoo staff from the animal, education, development, and retail departments of a Midwestern zoo. Their rhetoric about zoos and how they practice conservation suggests that zoo staff aim to generate affective responses from guests by displaying animals in managed care. These affective responses that staff hope to …
Evaluation And Mechanisms Of Host-Plant Resistance To The Wireworm-Diabrotica-Systena Complex In Sweetpotatoes (Ipomoea Batatas) And A Commercial Kairomone Lure In Diabroticites, Thomas J. Douglas
Theses and Dissertations
An evaluation of host-plant resistance to the wireworm-Diabrotica-Systena (WDS) complex of root-feeding insects in sweetpotatoes was performed on a total of 15 cultivars and advanced lines over the course of 4 years (2017-2020). It was found that sweetpotatoes varieties can differ significantly in amount of damage incurred. Several mechanisms of resistance were proposed and tested: periderm toughness, dry weight percentage, and volatile organic chemical defenses. No significant difference was found amongst the varieties tested concerning the physical properties. Chemical analysis was limited in scope but did show some differences between a susceptible variety when compared to a resistant variety in …

Associations Between The Gastrointestinal Microbiome And Nitrogen Efficiency In Holstein And Jersey Cows, Vanessa Michelle De La Guardia Hidrogo
Theses and Dissertations
Manure nitrogen in dairy cattle represents a substantial economic and environmental loss to the industry. Current strategies used to improve N efficiency (Neff) have shown limited progress and thus, warrant more effective approaches. Considering that the gastrointestinal bacterial community has been associated with various phenotypes of economic importance, the objective of this project was to evaluate the associations between the rumen and fecal bacteriomes and Neff phenotypes in dairy cows. Results showed similarities in the overall bacterial community composition and structure of cows differing in Neff. However, the relative abundance of specific bacterial ASV differed between low and high Neff …
Temporal Alterations In Bovine Placental Capacity During Compromised Pregnancies, Zully E. Contreras
Temporal Alterations In Bovine Placental Capacity During Compromised Pregnancies, Zully E. Contreras
Theses and Dissertations
The circadian rhythms are not solely regulated by photoperiod but are also influenced by feed regimen. Therefore, maternal nutrient restriction during gestation could potentially impact the fetal circadian rhythm. Melatonin, a circadian rhythm modulator hormone, has shown to act as an antioxidant reducing reactive oxygen species during stress exposure; and two potential mechanisms have been proposed for melatonin causing vasoconstriction and vasodilation regulating blood flow. In livestock species, nutrient restriction during gestation reduces uterine blood flow, limiting nutrients availability to the fetus for growth and development. Therefore, this project aimed to use beef heifers to evaluate the maternal nutrient restriction …
Some New Anomaly Detection Methods With Applications To Financial Data, Zhicong Zhao
Some New Anomaly Detection Methods With Applications To Financial Data, Zhicong Zhao
Theses and Dissertations
Novel clustering methods are presented and applied to financial data. First, a scan-statistics method for detecting price point clusters in financial transaction data is considered. The method is applied to Electronic Business Transfer (EBT) transaction data of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). For a given vendor, transaction amounts are fit via maximum likelihood estimation which are then converted to the unit interval via a natural copula transformation. Next, a new Markov type relation for order statistics on the unit interval is developed. The relation is used to characterize the distribution of the minimum exceedance of all copula transformed transaction …

The functional role of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in inherited metabolic disorders, including phenylketonuria (PKU), is unknown. We demonstrated that the mouse lncRNA Pair and human HULC associate with phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH). Pair-knockout mice exhibited excessive blood phenylalanine, musty odor, hypopigmentation, growth retardation, and progressive neurological symptoms including seizures, which faithfully models human PKU. HULC depletion led to reduced PAH enzymatic activities in human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-differentiated hepatocytes. Mechanistically, HULC modulated the enzymatic activities of PAH by facilitating PAH-substrate and PAH-cofactor interactions. To develop a therapeutic strategy for restoring liver lncRNAs, we designed GalNAc-tagged lncRNA mimics that …

Exploring Bottled Water Purchase Intention Via Trust In Advertising, Product Knowledge, Consumer Beliefs And Theory Of Reasoned Action, Carolyn A. Lin, Xiaowen Xu
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
As the bottled water market is projected to grow continuously worldwide, so is the plastic waste that pollutes the environment. The beverage industry’s marketing campaigns have played an important role in sustaining the popularity of bottled water. Social science theory-based empirical research examining how consumers make bottled water consumption decisions remains limited. To help fill this literature gap, the current study tested a conceptual framework to explore the influence of trust in bottled water advertising and perceived product knowledge on consumer beliefs about bottled water, in conjunction with theory of reasoned action. The study surveyed a sample of college students …

The tripeptide glutathione (GSH) is instrumental to antioxidant protection and xenobiotic metabolism, and the ratio of its reduced and oxidized forms (GSH/GSSG) indicates the cellular redox environment and maintains key aspects of cellular signaling. Disruptions in GSH levels and GSH/GSSG have long been tied to various chronic diseases, and many studies have examined whether variant alleles in genes responsible for GSH synthesis and metabolism are associated with increased disease risk. However, past studies have been limited to established, canonical GSH genes, though emerging evidence suggests that novel loci and genes influence the GSH redox system in specific tissues. The present …

Tandem Duplicate Expression Patterns Are Conserved Between Maize Haplotypes Of The Α-Zein Gene Family, Preston Hurst, James C. Schnable, David R. Holding
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Tandem duplication gives rise to copy number variation and subsequent functional novelty among genes as well as diversity between individuals in a species. Functional novelty can result from either divergence in coding sequence or divergence in patterns of gene transcriptional regulation. Here, we investigate conservation and divergence of both gene sequence and gene regulation between the copies of the α-zein gene family in maize inbreds B73 and W22. We used RNA-seq data generated from developing, self-pollinated kernels at three developmental stages timed to coincide with early and peak zein expression. The reference genome annotations for B73 and W22 were modified …

“I’M Not Staying In The Hospital Tonight”: How Emergency Departments Can Leverage Health And Social Services At Home To Support Care Transitions For Older Patients, Emily Franzosa, Ula Hwang, Maya Genovesi, Orna Intrator, Thomas Edes, Michael Malone
Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine
When hospital admission is less than desirable and sending a patient home alone feels unsafe, connecting patients to health and social services at home are a valuable third option for emergency providers. Coordinating home support services from the ED is effective care delivery and aligns with health systems’ goals of decreasing avoidable admissions, and developing capacity to assess and refer patients to home support from the ED is part of good emergency care. Change also doesn’t have to happen overnight. Taking small steps now to improve older patients' transitions to home can help EDs build toward high-quality, patient-centered care for …

Urban Farming Design In Los Angeles: An Adaptive Reuse Project In Response To Food Crisis And Housing Crisis, Pin-Han Su
Theses
As the world population is constantly growing and will reach 9 billion people by 2050, the current danger to the world's food supply system creates a severe challenge. By 2050, more populations will be living in the cities and creating higher demand on food supply, but the farmable lands on our planet could be much less because of climate change and urbanization. Agricultural leaders have argued that cities will need to produce food internally to respond to demand by increasing population and to avoid harmful pollution and unaffordable food prices. Architecture, as the most influential element affecting our daily life, …
