Research has shown obesity is a significant problem affecting the general-public and is increasing in prevalence among health care providers. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to understand the lived experience of being obese as a registered nurse. One-on-one interviews with 15 registered nurses, who had a personal experience with being obese as a registered nurse, were conducted. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, which were taped and transcribed verbatim. The data analysis was conducted manually to gain the true essence of the participant's lived experiences. The responses were analyzed, coded, and themed using Colaizzi's method of data …

The Effect Of Treatment Modalities On Chronic Low Back Pain And Self-Transcendence, Grace Augustine Aug 2021

The Effect Of Treatment Modalities On Chronic Low Back Pain And Self-Transcendence, Grace Augustine

Dissertations

Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) is a common health problem that most people experience at some point in their lives. For the relief of pain, numerous studies have shown that pain medication causes several side effects and leads to mortality. This study focused on how an individual's choice of CLBP treatment modalities impacts utilization of the strategies of self-transcendence. Chronic low back pain prevalence shows a steady increase in the studies reviewed. Patients may improve in self-transcendence and well-being while they experience CLBP. Self-transcendence is a vital resource of well-being as people seek to manage CLBP.

Testing A New Workflow To Integrate The Voice-Of-The-Customer In Readmission Analysis For Skilled Nursing Facility Readmissions From Home, Stephanie Edurese Bilbao

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

There are multiple layers of oversight across the healthcare delivery system. Measuring acute hospital readmissions has been identified as an important outcome measure of quality care. Our patients are one of the major stakeholders in the healthcare system. One role of a clinical nurse leader is to integrate evidence-based leadership practices that identify and assess outcomes, mitigate risk, enhance health promotion, deliver highly effective patient care, and ensure transparent relationships with stakeholders. Rationales for examining and re-designing the readmission analysis workflow based on the customer’s experience are discussed in this paper. The global aim of the project is to …

Normalization Of Muscle Strength Measurements In The Assessment Of Cardiometabolic Risk Factors In Adolescents, Tiago Rodrigues De Lima, Xuemei Sui M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., Diego Augusto Santos Silva

Faculty Publications

Muscle strength (MS) has been associated with cardiometabolic risk factors (CMR) in adolescents, however, the impact attributed to body size in determining muscle strength or whether body size acts as a confounder in this relationship remains controversial. We investigated the association between absolute MS and MS normalized for body size with CMR in adolescents. This was a cross-sectional study comprising 351 adolescents (44.4% male; 16.6 ± 1.0 years) from Brazil. MS was assessed by handgrip and normalized for body weight, body mass index (BMI), height, and fat mass. CMR included obesity, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, glucose imbalance, and high inflammation …

Globally, there is growing interest to integrate cricket-based ingredients (flour) into food products to combat food and nutrition insecurity. However, there is lack of information on in-depth nutrient profile of the two cricket species (Scapsipedus icipe and Gryllus bimaculatus), which are the most widely consumed in Africa. Here we determined the nutrient composition of two cricket species and compared them with published records of key animal and plant sources. Our results revealed that the crude protein contents of S. icipe and G. bimaculatus were similar (56.8 and 56.9%, respectively) and comparable to those of animal protein sources. Both cricket species …

Scaling Up Sagebrush Chemistry With Near-Infrared Spectroscopy And Uas-Acquired Hyperspectral Imagery, Peter J. Olsoy, Brecken C. Robb, Jennifer Sorenson Forbey, T. Trevor Caughlin, Chelsea Merriman, Jordan D. Nobler

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sagebrush ecosystems (Artemisia spp.) face many threats including large wildfires and conversion to invasive annuals, and thus are the focus of intense restoration efforts across the western United States. Specific attention has been given to restoration of sagebrush systems for threatened herbivores, such as Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and pygmy rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis), reliant on sagebrush as forage. Despite this, plant chemistry (e.g., crude protein, monoterpenes and phenolics) is rarely considered during reseeding efforts or when deciding which areas to conserve. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has proven effective in predicting plant chemistry under laboratory conditions in …

Population Health Research Brief Series

Diabetes and hypertension are among the leading causes of poor health and mortality in the United States. Properly taking prescribed medications to manage these conditions is critical for maintaining health and preventing complications. This is especially true for older adults, who are more likely to live with these chronic conditions. This brief summarizes findings from a study of an older adults in Missouri who participated in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) between 2006 and 2014. On average, 1 in 4 individuals with hypertension and 1 in 3 with diabetes did not properly take prescribed medications to manage their health …

"Backpack" Food Programs Linked To Higher Test Scores For School Children, Michael Kurtz, Karen S. Conway, Robert D. Mohr Aug 2021

"Backpack" Food Programs Linked To Higher Test Scores For School Children, Michael Kurtz, Karen S. Conway, Robert D. Mohr

Carsey Publications

Nationwide, over half a million children live in households that report very low food security among children, meaning a child is not eating enough, going hungry, skipping a meal, or not eating for a full day because the household can’t afford food. School meals cannot alleviate this need outside of school hours. To mitigate food insecurity on days when free school meals are unavailable, foodbanks have partnered with schools to create weekend feeding, or “BackPack,” programs that provide children with a bag of nonperishable food to nourish them over the weekend.

In this brief, authors Michael Kurtz, Karen Conway, and …

Identifying Motivation Toward Healthy Behavior In Overweight And Obese Pregnant Women, Heather Lynn Watson Aug 2021

Identifying Motivation Toward Healthy Behavior In Overweight And Obese Pregnant Women, Heather Lynn Watson

Dissertations

Excessive weight gain in overweight and obese pregnant women may result in long-term maternal and child health implications. Current interventions reflect minimal effectiveness toward achievement of appropriate weight gain in this population. Although not specific to examination of motivation towards dietary and exercise behaviors in pregnant overweight and obese women, the literature supports that motivation represents a factor impacting diet and exercise health behavior modification. This study examined the predictive value of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness), healthcare climate, attitude toward weight gain, and BMI on motivation towards healthy dietary and exercise behaviors and the mediation effect of healthcare …

Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health

Relatively little progress has been made in reducing anemia prevalence among women of reproductive age (WRA anemia). Interventions, policies and programs aimed at reducing WRA anemia have the potential to improve overall not only women's, but also children's health and nutrition outcomes. To our knowledge, this is the first review that aimed to compile evidence on the determinants and drivers of WRA anemia reduction in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We synthesized the available evidence on the determinants and drivers, including government policies and programs, of WRA anemia and their mitigation strategies across a wide range of countries and geographies, …

Background: Neonatal mortality due to preterm birth and low birthweight remains a significant challenge in Pakistan. Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a unique, low-cost intervention proven to reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity and increase exclusive breastfeeding rates. However, KMC has not been attempted in community settings in Pakistan. We aim to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based KMC package to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality among preterm and low birthweight (LBW) infants, which will provide evidence for policy development and the large-scale implementation of KMC across the country.
Objective: The primary objective of this trial is to reduce …

Peninsula Medical School

Introduction The burden of post-tuberculosis (TB) lung disease (PTBLD) is steadily increasing in sub-Saharan Africa, causing disability among TB survivors. Without effective medicines, the mainstay of PTBLD treatment evolves around disease prevention and supportive treatment. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR), a low-cost, non-pharmacological intervention has shown effectiveness in a group of PTBLD individuals but has not been tested in a clinical trial. This study aims to assess the impact of a 6-week PR programme on maximal exercise capacity and other outcomes among adults in Uganda living with PTBLD. Methods and analysis This is a randomised waiting-list controlled trial with blinded outcome measures, …

Plasma hyaluronan (HA) increases systemically in type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the HA synthesis inhibitor, 4-Methylumbelliferone, has been proposed to treat the disease. However, HA is also implicated in normal physiology. Therefore, we generated a Hyaluronan Synthase 2 transgenic mouse line, driven by a tet-response element promoter to understand the role of HA in systemic metabolism. To our surprise, adipocyte-specific overproduction of HA leads to smaller adipocytes and protects mice from high-fat-high-sucrose-diet-induced obesity and glucose intolerance. Adipocytes also have more free glycerol that can be released upon beta3 adrenergic stimulation. Improvements in glucose tolerance were not linked to increased plasma …

Simple Energy Balance Or Microbiome For Childhood Obesity Prevention?, Tom Baranowski, Kathleen J Motil

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Obesity prevention interventions generally have either not worked or had effects inadequate to mitigate the problem. They have been predicated on the simple energy balance model, which has been severely questioned by biological scientists. Numerous other etiological mechanisms have been proposed, including the intestinal microbiome, which has been related to childhood obesity in numerous ways. Public health research is needed in regard to diet and the microbiome, which hopefully will lead to effective child obesity prevention.
