. The change and restrictions in how we react with cultural heritage because of the COVID-19 pandemic has created an urgency in advancing remote and digital access to objects and sites. This paper outlines the process for developing Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) using digital recording and modelling of architectural heritage and archaeology. Virtual Reality (VR) software, game engine platforms and WEB platforms are outlined which can be applied to represent heritage sites in addition to emerging screen based technological learning systems. The application Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) and Game Engine Platforms for creating Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) is also …
A Laboratory Of Common Interest: Contesting The Economisation Of Space In Limerick City Through The Practice Of Aesthetic Work, Fiona Woods
Doctoral
This arts practice-based research [APBR] addresses a political and ethical problem, namely how a creative practice can operate contrary to the destructive, predatory forces of extractive capitalism. The research took the systemic, socio-spatial violence of enclosure and economisation as a starting point, anchored in the concrete conditions of Limerick city, to test the critical, political possibilities of collaborative, cultural work. From an examination of the ways in which lived space is subsumed under the abstractive logic of ‘the Economy’, two processes of abstraction and enclosure are isolated and examined: i) a hollowing out of publicness, captured by the lexigraph public …

From Full Irish To Freespace: Irish Architecture In The Twenty-First Century, Brian Ward
Books/Book chapters
This chapter examines Irish architecture during the Celtic Tiger boom years, the crash, and the eventual economic recovery. Using representations of Irish architecture such as the book, Full Irish, and the Architecture Biennale, FREESPACE, it concentrates on the architectural practices (such as Grafton Architects and O’Donnell + Tuomey) that were the focus of international interest during this period but places their work in the midst of the country’s broader spatial production. Using imagery of ghost estates, it also examines the emergence of a distinct post-Celtic Tiger mode of architecture evident in projects such as Commonage.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has the potential to increase effi ciency in the construction industry by changing traditional 2 Dimensional (2D) information exchange to a method of delivery that promotes collaboration and integration across the construction supply chain. From a Quantity Surveyor (QS) perspective, BIM offers capabilities to generate Quantity Take-Off (QTO) directly from a 3 Dimensional (3D) model. This paper outlines the 4 Dimensional (4D - Planning) and 5 Dimensional (5D - Cost) process. It also addresses some of the issues that the QS may come up against when generating and using BIM quantities and some diffi culties when …
A New Epoch For Community Renewable Energy Co-Operatives In Ireland? An Exploration Of The Factors Influencing Their Development, Gerard Doyle
Articles
The paper outlines the capacities required for community groups to successfully establish and maintain renewable energy co-operatives in Ireland. The paper finds that community groups that successfully establish renewable energy co-operatives must possess high levels of resilience, have access to technical expertise, and have appropriate finance. It also highlights how it is crucial that at least one member of each renewable energy co-operative engages with state agencies and the community. Pringle’s (2015) theoretical framework applied in this paper focuses on the capacities required for the successful implementation of community renewable energy projects (which include community renewable energy co-operatives) in rural …

You Can't Lose A Game If You Don't Play The Game: Exploring The Ethics Of Gamification In Education, Dympna O'Sullivan, Ioannis Stavrakakis, Damian Gordon, Andrea Curley, Brendan Tierney, Emma Murphy, Michael Collins, Anna Becevel
Articles
Gamification has been hailed as a meaningful solution to the perennial challenge of sustaining student attention in class. It uses facets of gameplay in an educational context, including things such as points, leaderboards and badges. These are clearly efforts to make the student experience more entertaining and engaging, but nonetheless, they are also clearly digital nudges and attempts to change the students’ behaviours and attitudes to a specific set of concepts, and in which case they must, and should, be subject to the same ethical scrutiny as any other form of persuasion technique, as they may be unintentionally eroding the …

The impact of COVID-19 has been widespread and far-reaching, and one domain that has experienced severe disruption is the university education sector, where the entire apparatus of teaching and assessment for many programmes of study had to move on-line in a matter of days. This was accomplished notably through enormous co-operation between staff and students in educational institutions (Adnan and Anwar, 2020). The negative economic impacts of COVID-19 on university students has been highlighted in terms of poor access to online resources, delayed graduation and lost internships with this effect felt more keenly by students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (Aucejo, …

Sustainable International Engagement Using A Partner Co-Hosted Teaching Model, Brian Gillespie, Paul Doyle, Zy Jiang, Darryl Humble
Conference Papers
Internationalisation is a significant activity of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) worldwide and is typically embedded within the aims, ambitions, vision, and strategy of the institution. It incorporates the policies and procedures required to facilitate participation within a global academic environment, and is often considered to be a transformative process that impacts practices in teaching and learning, research, and administration. With formal protocols to establish partnerships, such as memoranda of understanding and articulation agreements, the business of formally creating international partnerships is well defined. However, the motivations, corresponding metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) of successful partnerships are not as well …

Microbial contamination and biofilm formation in complex musculoskeletal trauma is an ongoing clinical challenge. Infection and biofilm formation in these injuries cause significant pain in addition to physical, socioeconomic, mental, and familial burdens to patients while increasing strains on the healthcare system. Biofilm based infections are prevalent and are particularly difficult to treat due to the biofilm's tolerance to antimicrobials and ability to evade natural body defenses. Primary strategies to treat biofilm are 1) inhibition, 2) dispersal, and 3) removal. A promising strategy is to use the biofilm dispersal agent 2 decenoic acid (2DA) and its analogs combined with antimicrobials …

Detection Of Circulating Biomarkers With Gold-Based Nanoparticles And Optical Spectroscopy, Raymond E. Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are remarkable agents for biological detection due to their facile surface modification, optical enhancement, and biocompatibility. These characteristics encourage the development of new methods for biological detection. Of particular interest, in the field of biological detection, is the ability to detect, quantify, and characterize circulating biomarkers. Circulating biomarkers include classes of biological analytes such as cells, extracellular vesicles, proteins, DNAs, and RNAs. The ability to detect and characterize such analytes gives clinicians two significant advantages in diagnosing diseases. One advantage is diagnosis by means of a non-invasive biopsy, as circulating biomarkers may be isolated and detected from …

Two Hundred Years Of Grit And Grind: A Mythological Geography In The Literary Landscape Of Memphis, Tennessee, Meredith Heath Boulden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Two Hundred Years of Grit and Grind explores literary texts that are set in Memphis and authored by native Memphians which offer scholars unique insight into the city of Memphis, Tennessee. While not intended as essentialized representations of an authentic Memphis, the texts in this dissertation provide an insiders view to Memphians perceptions of their local identity, one that Yi-Fu Tuan argues is but one of several much-needed perspectives into our understanding of a given place. As an entry point into a more comprehensive understanding of the South, Memphians ambivalence toward their status as residents of the Bluff City reflects …

Faith, Hope, And Torture: Music In The Prisoner-Of-War Camps Of North Vietnam, Angela Michelle Brunson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
North Vietnams cruel treatment of captured American pilots included music torture which rivaled the CIAs program in Guantnamo Bay, but the aural persecution suffered for nearly a decade by the American prisoners of war has never been documented. Unlike other victims of music torture, the prisoners consistently turned to music as a healing, empowering, and unifying force, which raises several questions. Why did the POWs fare better than Guantnamo detainees? Can music reverse the trauma that music torture caused? How do we determine which music will cause harm and which music will heal? Through numerous interviews with repatriated POWs and …

Disenfranchised Losses: Grief And Growth In Non-Death Loss Events, Mae-Lynn Germany
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Although non-death losses (NDLs) can be recognized as grieveable events, they rarely benefit from the social recognition, support, and empirical examination afforded to death-related bereavement. Disenfranchised losses can result in prolonged grief reactions and lead to increased vulnerability, challenges to meaning making, and confusion. Dynamics related to the global COVID-19 pandemic and political unrest in 2020 have resulted in myriad NDLs for individuals and communities, making the salience of and for fuller understanding of NDLs more important than ever. To this end we examined tangible and intangible loss experiences (e.g. loss of safety, security, respect, housing) associated with NDL events, …

Writing centers are resilient institutions, but its unclear what factors contribute to their longevity. Scholars such as Neal Lerner suggest the versatility of writing centers stems from their ability to react and resist the status quo. Yet, its undetermined what specific factors lend themselves to the continuation of a writing centers life span. Using ecocomposition as a theoretical framework, this dissertation expands the limited conversation on writing center ecology and sustainability. Each chapter is a case study of the risk management, resilience, and sustainability systems at a regional writing center. The purpose of these case studies is twofold: to ascertain …
Social Media Interaction And Self-Perception In Adolescents And Young Adults With Cancer, Sarah Daniels
Social Media Interaction And Self-Perception In Adolescents And Young Adults With Cancer, Sarah Daniels
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The unique psychosocial needs of adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer are often overlooked or left unmet during treatment (Zebrack, 2011). Self-development is an important task for all AYA, and it is often informed by social interaction (Goffman, 1959). Given that social interaction among AYA occurs in offline and online spaces, the role of social interaction on social media for self-development is curious (Calvin, 2020). But examining this relationship also requires thoughtful attention by researchers to adequately describe the population being studied (Davis et al., 2020). As such, this exploratory sequential mixed methods research study sought to address the …

Tuition discounting has long been an important component of revenue management at private institutions and has been steadily growing in prevalence in public institutions. The fundamental assumption of tuition discounting is that student enrollment behavior can be influenced by strategic optimization of student aid and tuition price. However, a literature review reveals the inherent tensions between relevant economic theories describing human behavior at the aggregate level, and student choice theories detailing the complex individual factors that combine to form a student enrollment decision. This three-part quantitative study evaluates trends in institutional tuition discount rates for first-time freshmen at public, four-year, …

On Nonlinear Acoustic Waves Of Third--Order (In Time) And Applications, Marcelo Adriano Dos Santos Bongarti
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The mathematical topic of the present thesis is a third-order (in time) semilinear Partial Differential Equation (PDE), generally referred to, in the context of acoustics, as the Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation. It arises in a variety of physical contexts such as in describing the behavior of viscoelastic materials and propagation of acoustic waves. The presence of the third-order time derivative is due to the use of the second-sound phenomenon as a model for heat propagation. This anticipates thermal waves traveling with finite velocity, to replace the classical thermal theory, which is based on diffusion and under which heat signals have an infinite …
