Guanxi 2.0: Social Capital Within A Cultural Context Revealed By The Use Of Social Media By Chinese International Students, Xu Zhang
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
The group of Chinese overseas students has become a very important part of the cross-border communication group. The number of Chinese students studying in the UK continues to increase. For foreign students from other countries, constructing a new social network is a key step for them to obtain necessary help and support to carry out their new study and life. This thesis takes Chinese international students studying at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom as an example, using the ethnographic research methods of participatory observation and in-depth interviews to explore the process of Chinese international students building their …

Sustainability Of Rewards-Based Crowdfunding: A Quasi-Experimental Analysis Of Funding Targets And Backer Satisfaction, Michael Wessel, Rob Gleasure, Robert John Kauffman
Sustainability Of Rewards-Based Crowdfunding: A Quasi-Experimental Analysis Of Funding Targets And Backer Satisfaction, Michael Wessel, Rob Gleasure, Robert John Kauffman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Rewards-based crowdfunding presents an information asymmetry for participants due to the funding mechanism used. Campaign-backers trust creators to complete projects and deliver rewards as outlined prior to the fundraising process, but creators may discover better opportunities as they progress with a project. Despite this, the all-or-nothing (AON) mechanism on crowdfunding platforms incentivizes creators to set meager funding-targets that are easier to achieve but may offer limited slack when creators wish to simultaneously pursue emerging opportunities later in the project. We explore the related issues of how funding targets seem to be selected by the creators, and how dissatisfaction with the …

Mobile Commerce, Crowd Commerce, And Stage Models: Reviewing And Expanding On Tp Liang’S Research, Sihua Chen, Mikko Siponen, Wael Soliman, Cao Xin, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we review a few key themes of Ting-Peng (TP) Liang’s research. We first discuss some of his major contributions to information systems (IS) in the areas of electronic commerce, mobile commerce, and crowd commerce. Future research directions for these three themes are also discussed in the paper. TP Liang is also an early proponent of stage models although this stream of research has yet to receive the importance it deserves in the IS community. Previous seminal theoretical accounts in IS have generally separated variance and process models, the latter is useful in modeling changes in the explanatory …

Development Of A Vitamin K Database For Commercially Available Food In Australia, Claire R. Palmer, Henrietta Koch, Sujata Shinde, Lauren C. Blekkenhorst, Joshua Lewis, Kevin D. Croft, Jonathan M. Hodgson, Marc Sim
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Vitamin K content of foods is known to vary substantially by geographical location. In Australia, no Vitamin K database of food exists, thereby creating ambiguity when trying to develop national dietary intake guidelines. This investigation aimed to develop a Vitamin K database for commonly consumed foods that are commercially available in Australian supermarkets. The Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone; PK) and K2 (menaquinone; MK4, MK7) content of 60 foods known to contain Vitamin K were assessed (e.g., vegetables fruits, oils, animal products, dairy and fermented foods). A liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS) method was developed and used to measure PK …

Novel Adaptive Sampling Algorithm For Pod-Based Non-Intrusive Reduced Order Model, Jiachen Wang, Xiaosong Du, Joaquim R.R.A. Martins
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) based reduced-order model (ROM) has been an effective tool for flow field prediction in the engineering industry. The sample selection in the design space for POD basis construction affects the ROM performance sensitively. Adaptive sampling can significantly reduce the number of samples to achieve the required model accuracy. In this work, we propose a novel adaptive sampling algorithm, called conjunction sampling strategy, which is based on proven strategies. The conjunction sampling strategy is demonstrated on airfoil flow field prediction within the transonic regime. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed strategy by running 10 trials …
Hidup Dalam Transit: Representasi Diri Digital Pengungsi Muda Oromo Di Instagram Terhadap Rekonstruksi "Refugeeness" Dalam Interaksi Antara Pengungsi Dan Audiens, Clarisa Irene
Antropologi Indonesia
The representation of refugees and asylum seekers should not be bounded to media’s depiction of it. This paper focuses on refugees’ self-representation on Instagram, one of the most used social media platforms in the world, which cannot be understood separately from their daily life as refugees. Drawing from the observation of young Oromo refugees, I find that Instagram—and other social media—are used as a form of online participation to fill their days in transit. Other than offering the Oromo youths access to entertainment and new insights, Instagram also provides a space in which they can build and maintain relationship and …

Spectatorial Sisterhood: Relasi Sosial Pengguna Second Account Di Instagram, Amelia Rugun Sirait
Antropologi Indonesia
Instagram is a popular image based social media platform. Usually, users have their own accounts for their personal profile to be viewed publicly. As Instagram features develop, users may have more than one account. Accounts that are specific to certain circle of friends are called “second accounts” and treated as private accounts used to express and relate through images. In this social media ethnography, seven subjects shared their experiences through uploaded images, videos and texts. They have the awareness to avoid relationships and gazes in their main account by building a different subjectivity in their second account. Contents on their …

Youtube Sebagai Arena Produksi Dan Reproduksi Kultur Hip-Hop, Edra Ramadhan Praliansyah
Antropologi Indonesia
This article discusses the so-called YouTube rapper phenomenon, a new subgenre of hip-hop music whose emergence was caused by YouTube. Rap or hip-hop, which has a long history of intergroup resistance from stage to stage, has now moved to YouTube as a new battleground, producing the YouTube rapper subgenre. This article shows that the hip-hop community was very responsive to YouTube, which was their new stage, alongside Discord and Facebook as more textual media employable for debate and discussion. This article argues that YouTube has the capacity to become a center of hip-hop capitalization in Indonesia, as in elsewhere, because …

Pivot: Sebuah Tinjauan Weberian Atas Rasionalitas Tindakan, Albertus Bambang Suprijanto, Tony Rudyansjah
Antropologi Indonesia
Second conversion along with the increasing of welfare and age is a common phenomenon that occurs among the urban middle class. In this case, the achievement of the ultimate goal of life must be prepared through daily habits. Religion is then considered as a vehicle that can bring them through life to realize what they aspire to in the future. Religious morality is used as a guide in living daily life. In fact, not all changes in life views can be categorized as second conversions. In this paper, Max Weber's conception of the “calling” is used as an analytical tool …
Compassionate Goddes And Filial Monk: The Influence Of Confucian Values On Chinese Buddhism And Its Practices In Indonesia, Jesada Buaban
Compassionate Goddes And Filial Monk: The Influence Of Confucian Values On Chinese Buddhism And Its Practices In Indonesia, Jesada Buaban
Antropologi Indonesia
This article examines interpretations of Buddhism that have been occurred to respond to Confucian values. Textual analysis and ethnography to scrutinize Chinese ritual performances in Indonesia were employed as research method. It found that in order to serve the Confucian values, Buddhism has to emphasize filial piety alongside monastic practices. It can be seen in the stories of Guanyin saved her father and Mulian saved his mother from hell. Although the origin of these stories can be traced to the Pali and Sanskrit scriptures, they had been reinterpreted and localized to convey Confucian values and Chinese tradition. In addition, these …

From Sanitation To Soybeans: Kitchen Hygiene And Nutritional Nationalism In Republican China, 1911–1945, Sarah Xia Yu
Asia Pacific Perspectives
This article investigates evolving expectations for Chinese individuals to clean, cook, eat, and nourish in their private kitchens, and how certain diseases became urgent touchstones for the change in public health priorities. Reformists promoted personal responsibility and popular interest in kitchen and dietary hygiene, which increased as Chinese audiences became exposed to globally- circulating ideas of sanitation and nutrition in individual homes. Furthermore, this occurred in tandem with increased institutionalized government developments for improved infrastructure. This article also highlights Chinese participation in the transnational dietary science movement of the early twentieth century, as reformists developed methods for beriberi and tuberculosis …
Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz
Demystifying Remote Research In Anthropology And Area Studies, Kaitlyn Ugoretz
Asia Pacific Perspectives
Physically cut off from locations and archives central to our work due to restrictions in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, area studies scholars must reimagine what constitutes rigorous and responsible research in their respective disciplines. The practice of remote research, however, is not a new one. Digital ethnography, an admittedly niche subdiscipline of anthropology, has long been grappling with the issues of how to value and conduct remote research. This essay explores a number of misconceptions regarding digital and remote research that may aid in contextualizing and coming to terms with the anxieties the broader scholarly community faces. I …
Is It Possible To Think Of A “Chinese Pacific” In The Making? Decolonizing Anthropology In The Asia-Pacific Region, Rodolfo Maggio
Is It Possible To Think Of A “Chinese Pacific” In The Making? Decolonizing Anthropology In The Asia-Pacific Region, Rodolfo Maggio
Asia Pacific Perspectives
The travel restrictions implemented to limit the spread of the COVID19 pandemic prevent fieldworkers from collecting ethnographic data in the Pacific. The possibility of collecting first-hand data about indigenous perspectives on the recent growth of the Chinese presence and influence is therefore limited too. Despite the critical need for this kind of data, the situation provides an opportunity for a concerted reflection on the conceptual tools scholars deploy to study China in the Pacific. A decolonial methodology seems necessary to prevent the superimposition of preconceived ideas upon indigenous views that, at the moment, can only be accessed in journalistic and …

An Exploration Of Aphasia Therapy Dosage In The First Six Months Of Stroke Recovery, Emily Brogan, Natalie Ciccone, Erin Godecke
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Aphasia research uses the length of time within rehabilitation sessions as the main measure of dosage. Few papers detail therapeutic ingredients or outline the number of times these were delivered over the treatment period. The present observational study identified therapeutic ingredients in the Very Early Rehabiltiation in SpEech (VERSE) trial and explored the dosage provided using a model of cumulative intervention intensity (CII). Therapists video recorded one therapy session per week and 53 (12%) randomly selected therapy videos were analysed. The videos were coded for number of error productions, self-corrections and type and frequency of therapist cueing. The Western Aphasia …

Chinese Nationalism And The “Gray Zone”: Case Analyses Of Public Opinion And Prc Maritime Policy, Andrew Chubb
Chinese Nationalism And The “Gray Zone”: Case Analyses Of Public Opinion And Prc Maritime Policy, Andrew Chubb
CMSI Red Books
This volume examines the role of popular nationalism in China’s maritime conduct. Analysis of nine case studies of assertive but ostensibly nonmilitary actions by which the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has advanced its position in the South and East China Seas in recent years reveals little compelling evidence of popular sentiment driving decision-making. While some regard for public opinion demonstrably shapes Beijing’s propaganda strategies on maritime issues, and sometimes its diplomatic practices as well, the imperative for Chinese leaders to satisfy popular nationalism is at most a contributing factor to policy choices they undertake largely on the basis of …
Parental Awareness Of Early Intervention For Hispanic Children With Communication Disorders, Ruth Crutchfield, Sonya Salinas, Roy K. Chen
Parental Awareness Of Early Intervention For Hispanic Children With Communication Disorders, Ruth Crutchfield, Sonya Salinas, Roy K. Chen
Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications
Purpose: Children at risk of delayed speech and language development and speech-language disorders come from a broad range of demographic backgrounds, including ethnicities, sexes, and socioeconomic statuses. A vast body of research in speech-language pathology has demonstrated that early intervention is crucial for helping children acquire the necessary communication skills they need to become effective communicators, successful students, and ultimately accomplished adults. Currently, commercials, billboards, online sources, and personal referrals are the methods most often used to promote awareness of early childhood intervention services. Method: This study aimed to identify whether the current promotional methods used to increase parental awareness …

Healthcare providers’ (HCPs) stereotypes about the incompetence of blind and low-vision patients may lead them to patronize blind patients, over-focus on impairments, and neglect the presenting problem. The content of perceived HCP stereotypes about blind patients in the clinical setting was examined from the patient perspective with seven focus groups, including a total of 42 individual participants. Most participants reported an interaction when their HCPs treated them as if they were incompetent, and discussed how perceived evaluations of their warmth and competence impacted whether their HCPs trusted and respected them. Participants also discussed their evaluations of their HCPs’ warmth and …

A Laboratory Of Common Interest: Contesting The Economisation Of Space In Limerick City Through The Practice Of Aesthetic Work, Fiona Woods
Doctoral
This arts practice-based research [APBR] addresses a political and ethical problem, namely how a creative practice can operate contrary to the destructive, predatory forces of extractive capitalism. The research took the systemic, socio-spatial violence of enclosure and economisation as a starting point, anchored in the concrete conditions of Limerick city, to test the critical, political possibilities of collaborative, cultural work. From an examination of the ways in which lived space is subsumed under the abstractive logic of ‘the Economy’, two processes of abstraction and enclosure are isolated and examined: i) a hollowing out of publicness, captured by the lexigraph public …
