Strategies For Socioeconomic Development: A Study Of Nonprofit Practices, Alexis L. Dahl Walls
Strategies For Socioeconomic Development: A Study Of Nonprofit Practices, Alexis L. Dahl Walls
Honors Theses
This project seeks to examine methods in which nonprofit organizations (NPOs) are able to further their impact, specifically in regard to the socioeconomic development of their communities. This is done through examining consequences of socioeconomic disparities such as health disparities and increased crime rates, reviewing a number of commonly used NPO strategies, and emphasizing the importance of performance measurement tactics. All information was gathered through the combination of a complete literature review and a case study on a local nonprofit organization: MadisonHome Inc. It is important for nonprofit organizations to implement a variety of measurement tactics in order to determine …

Mass administration of ivermectin (IVM) has significantly reduced onchocerciasis prevalence, intensity, and morbidity in most endemic areas. Most IVM clinical trials were performed long ago in persons with high-intensity infections that are uncommon in West Africa today. This cohort treatment study recruited participants from a hypoendemic area in eastern Ghana to reevaluate the efficacy and tolerability of IVM with a special focus on the kinetics of microfilaria (Mf) clearance. Mf in the skin and anterior chambers (AC) were assessed by skin snip and slit lamp examinations at baseline and at 3 and 6 months after treatment with IVM 150 μg/kg. …

‘Grey’ Exclusions Matter: Mapping Illegal Exclusionary Practices And The Implications For Children With Disabilities In England And Australia, Elizabeth J. Done, Helen Knowler, David Armstrong
‘Grey’ Exclusions Matter: Mapping Illegal Exclusionary Practices And The Implications For Children With Disabilities In England And Australia, Elizabeth J. Done, Helen Knowler, David Armstrong
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper provides an outline of, and rationale for, an international research project that will identify commonalities and disparities in illegal school exclusionary practices in Australia and England. The aims here are to situate such practices within a global context and to map the events and processes through which children and young people, particularly those with ‘special’ educational needs and disabilities, are removed from school in Australia and England. The research we advocate is premised on evidence that inequitable and illegal exclusionary practices are endemic in education systems globally; hence, ‘pushout syndrome’ in the USA, ‘off rolling’ in England, facilitated …

College Students’ Well-Being During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Michaela Q. Iglesia, Ming-Tsan Lu
School of Medicine Publications
Studies have shown increased levels of distress during the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, and college students are becoming more recognized as a vulnerable population. This narrative systematic review aims to synthesize the current understanding of mental health, lifestyle, and socioeconomic impacts that the pandemic had on college students in the United States. A search was conducted on PubMed, PsycInfo, and Web of Science. A total of 34 observational studies were included which examined aspects of college students’ health and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. A great deal of students was shown to experience a moderate level …
The Dope On Marijuana Consumption And Impaired Driving, Samuel D. Hodge, Jr., Lauren Williams
The Dope On Marijuana Consumption And Impaired Driving, Samuel D. Hodge, Jr., Lauren Williams
Cleveland State Law Review
Marijuana is the most frequently used psychotropic drug in the United States, following alcohol consumption. Its use is becoming socially acceptable as more and more states legalize recreational consumption. Nevertheless, marijuana is still a drug, and individuals must understand that it has adverse health effects and potential therapeutic benefits.
Marijuana can influence a user’s judgment and impair a person’s driving abilities. A significant problem with its consumption and driving is that there is no statistical link to show what level of marijuana in the blood causes impairment. Roadside tests for the appropriate blood alcohol content to show intoxication are well …
Hybrid Bermudagrass And Kentucky Bluegrass Response Under Deficit Irrigation In A Semi-Arid, Cool Season Climate, Hanna R. Burgin
Hybrid Bermudagrass And Kentucky Bluegrass Response Under Deficit Irrigation In A Semi-Arid, Cool Season Climate, Hanna R. Burgin
Theses and Dissertations
As average global temperatures rise, cool-season C3 turfgrasses, such as the most commonly grown Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.; KBG), struggle to tolerate extreme summer heat and increase their water consumption. Hybrid Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers. × Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt Davy; HBG) is a warm-season C4 grass that may be increasingly suited for northern ecosystems traditionally classified as transition or cool-season climate zones. Glasshouse and field studies were conducted to compare HBG and KBG water use. The objective of the glasshouse study was to evaluate plant health and growth for two HBG cultivars (‘DT-1’ and ‘NorthBridge’) compared to a …

Obesity rates are climbing, representing a confounding and contributing factor to many disease states, including cancer. With respect to breast cancer, obesity plays a prominent role in the etiology of this disease, with certain subtypes such as triple-negative breast cancer having a strong correlation between obesity and poor outcomes. Therefore, it is critical to examine the obesity-related alterations to the normal stroma and the tumor microenvironment (TME). Adipocytes and adipose stem cells (ASCs) are major components of breast tissue stroma that have essential functions in both physiological and pathological states, including energy storage and metabolic homeostasis, physical support of breast …
Beyond The Horizons Of The Harvard Forewords, Or Bassok
Beyond The Horizons Of The Harvard Forewords, Or Bassok
Cleveland State Law Review
American constitutional thought is controlled by certain paradigms that limit the ability to think beyond them. A careful reading of the Harvard Law Review Forewords—the “tribal campfire” of American constitutional thinkers—is one way to detect these paradigms. Based on reading these Forewords since their inception in 1951 and until 2019, I track how the concept of judicial legitimacy has been understood over the years. My analysis shows that in recent decades an understanding of judicial legitimacy in terms of public support has risen to the status of a controlling paradigm. While this understanding is currently considered commonsensical, it stands in …

“From The House Come Everything”: Macler Shepard And Jeffvanderlou, Inc’S Effort To Rebuild A North St. Louis City Neighborhood, 1966-1978, Mark Loehrer
Theses
This thesis charts the course of the JeffVanderLou (JVL) organization between the pivotal years of 1966 to 1976, using the life of a man named Macler Shepard as the primary lens of exploration. Born in Marvell Arkansas, Macler Shepard followed in the footsteps of tens of thousands of other Southern migrants to cities like St. Louis, hoping to find a new life in the industrial North. However, no sooner had he settled in, he was displaced by the construction of Pruitt-Igoe, one of St. Louis’ first large-scale urban renewal programs. In response, Shepard became involved in neighborhood organizing, focusing on …

Trends In Language Choice And Effects Of Choice On Acquisition: Kaqchikel Maya And Spanish In Central Guatemala, Jonathan Homquist, Hana Muzika Kahn
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
This study reveals trends in the choice of Kaqchikel Maya, Spanish, or both languages for household activities and by the generations, that is, the children, parents, and grandparents, in a village and a town in the central highlands of Guatemala. Similarities and differences between the village and town are described in both cases. The study also highlights the direct relationship between the language choice of parents and the acquisition of Kaqchikel by children. A total of 171 indigenous residents in the town and the village participated in the study. Findings are based on responses to a sociolinguistic questionnaire that also …
