An Evaluation Of Local Mentor Support In Ae E-Teacher Educational Technology Integration Online Teacher Training Course, Yasemin Yelbay Yilmaz, Seher Balbay
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
This study addressed a different approach to online language teacher training programs. The researchers investigated the pros and cons of having local mentor support for an online course titled Using Technology in the English Language Classroom provided by the AE E-Teacher Program. The course was offered to preservice teachers from 24 different universities across Turkey. The study collected data through a pre- and post-online survey and individual semistructured interviews. The results revealed that while local mentoring as a supplement to the main course content contributed to teacher candidates’ emotional and professional attachment to their profession by helping them relate theory …

Navigating College Choice Through Female Peer-To-Peer Capital: The Case Of Somali American College-Seeking Women, Orkideh Mohajeri, Seth C. Snyder, Fernando Rodriguez
Journal of Access, Retention, and Inclusion in Higher Education
In this article, we argue that higher education and student affairs has failed to pay sufficient attention to the role of female peer-to-peer social and navigational capital in college choice processes, especially among first-generation, underrepresented, and minoritized collegeseekers. While Community Cultural Wealth (Yosso, 2005, 2006) highlights valuable forms of capital that marginalized, college-bound populations draw on, the general scholarship employing this model does not sufficiently account for the role of female peers as a connective thread that weaves various forms of capital together to support college choice. We consider the case of a group of Somali American undergraduate women attending …

A Systematic Review And Reflection On The Dimensions Of Diversity Represented In Behavior Analytic Research, Jodie Waits
A Systematic Review And Reflection On The Dimensions Of Diversity Represented In Behavior Analytic Research, Jodie Waits
LSU Master's Theses
The United States continues to transition towards a majority-minority composition and this trend has most rapidly emerged for school-aged children. Work with diverse populations calls for specialized skills and training experiences, but these are not strongly reflected in most training programs in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The present review was conducted to evaluate the scope and range of the dimensions of diversity included in Behavior Analytic research (e.g. race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc.), as well as to compile recommendations related to culturally responsive practice in ABA. The search revealed a total of 50 publications featuring a dimension of diversity. These works …

Inventory Control Using Fuzzy Inference System And Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System Under Uncertain Conditions, Ali Abdulmajeed Ali, Arzaq Mohammed Ali Kulaib
Hadhramout University Journal of Natural & Applied Sciences
Supply chain management plays a significant role for running business efficiently, as it integrates management of materials and information flows between supply chain parties Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) are expert systems widely used to deal with imprecise and vague data. In this paper FIS and ANFIS are implemented to deal with the uncertainty regarding demand, lead time and inventory level in continuous inventory control system in order to obtain the optimal order quantity and reorder point. These two models are compared with Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model at the different service level to …

“This Was 1976 Reinvented”: The Role Of Framing In The Development Of A South African Youth Movement, Ben Kirshner, Tafadzwa Tivaringe, Jesica S. Fernández
Ethnic Studies
The literature on contemporary youth organizing has documented psychological benefits associated with participation and some evidence of local political impact. But how do local organizing campaigns transform into regional or national movements? This is a practical question facing youth organizers and one that calls for attention from researchers. In this article, we draw on 3 years of ethnographic fieldwork with South Africa's Equal Education (EE) to analyze collective action frames that enabled EE youth to assert legitimacy and construct shared aims across locales. Our findings focus on how youth constructed historical continuity frames that lent them legitimacy as upholders of …

Exploring The Insights Of Science Within The Context Of Asian Christianity Through The Work Of William R. Stoeger, S.J., Lawrence Ng Yew Kim
Exploring The Insights Of Science Within The Context Of Asian Christianity Through The Work Of William R. Stoeger, S.J., Lawrence Ng Yew Kim
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
The work to relate theology and the findings of modern science, a long-standing one among western scholars, has been, for historical and cultural reasons, largely absent within the context of Asia. Asian theologians engaged in this field appear to do so by employing the perspective of their North American and European colleagues but without contextualizing it within an Asian context, which has been shaped by deeply rooted Asian philosophical foundations and religious traditions.
This dissertation offers a strategy to contextualize the insights of science within the Sinic context of Southeast Asia by appealing to the methodology of a Jesuit priest, …

“La Justicia Ambiental Es Para Ti Y Para Mí”: Translating Collective Struggles For Environmental And Energy Justice In Puerto Rico’S Jobos Bay Communities, Catalina M. De Onis
University of Montana Staff Publications
Rural, coastal communities in the Jobos Bay region of southeastern Puerto Rico confront disproportionate harms as an energy sacrifice zone. This space is constituted by imported fossil fuel dependency, economic and climate injustices, environmental racism, ecocide, US colonialism and imperialism, neoliberalism, and racial capitalism. In response, many grassroots actors mobilize against the toxic assault on their communities to push for alternatives beyond the suffocating status quo via apoyo mutuo [mutual support]. This survival work and movement building occur literally in “the outdoors” and in other intertwined multispecies environments, challenging narrow, oppressive colonial, and consumerist constructs that reduce “the outdoors” to …

Stock Return Prediction Using Financial News: A Unified Sequence Model Based On Hierarchical Attention And Long-Short Term Memory Networks, Haoling Chen, Peng Liu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Stock return prediction has been a hot topic in both research and industry given its potential for large financial gain. The return signal, apart from its inherent volatility and complexity, is often accompanied by a multitude of noises, such as other stocks’ performance, macroeconomic factors and financial news, etc. To better characterize these factors, we propose a new model that consists of two levels of sequence: an NLP-based module to capture the sequential nature of words and sentences in the financial news, and a time-series-based module to exploit the sequential nature of adjacent observations in the stock price. In this …
Voting As Exclusion, Ava Ayers
Voting As Exclusion, Ava Ayers
Fordham Law Review
This Essay considers two prevalent narratives about voting. In one narrative, voting expresses the civic virtue of the voter. In another, voting is an expression of inclusion in our political community’s circle of membership. I argue that although both narratives are true, and important, there is a third narrative that shadows them both. In this third narrative, voting affirms the exclusion of millions of people from our political community. The stories we tell about voting are incomplete and, sometimes, harmful.
An Ethnographic Interpretation Of Latino Perspectives On Family Engagement In Education, Mary Beth Pollema
An Ethnographic Interpretation Of Latino Perspectives On Family Engagement In Education, Mary Beth Pollema
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
In this period of intense demographic change and educational reform that strongly emphasizes the imperative of family engagement, yet implicates minority culture parents as not being involved, it behooves the field of education to take a closer look at the rigidity that schools utilize in their normalized perceptions and practices of parental involvement. Effective involvement can consist of a number of different activities, but only a few are acknowledged in educational discourse. Therefore, it is important to hear the perspectives of families of other cultures in order to bring to light new understanding that will assist schools in building stronger …

Connection Failure: War, Spiritualism And Communications Media In Violet Hunt's "Love's Last Leave.", Melissa Dinsman, Heather M. Robinson
Publications and Research
An overlooked figure of modernist circles, Violent Hunt was a suffragette, novelist, and author of ghost stories. In her second collection of haunted narratives, More Tales of The Uneasy (1925), Hunt explores the ghostliness of the Great War, both for those on the front and at home. In this essay, we focus on the third story in this volume, “Love’s Last Leave,” and argue that Hunt includes both ghost story tropes and communications media to articulate the real deadliness of the Great War. Communications technology and spiritualism share a similar historical evolution, and in “Love’s Last Leave” both types …

先秦賦研究論著敘録, Fan Zong
嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

International School Elementary Educators' Transition To A Revised Mathematics Curriculum: A Case Study, Christine H. Saba
International School Elementary Educators' Transition To A Revised Mathematics Curriculum: A Case Study, Christine H. Saba
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this single instrumental case study was to research how teachers at an organization of international schools transitioned to using a revised mathematics curriculum to understand how to replicate or improve the process for success in the implementation phase in the future. The guiding theories for this research were Schlossberg’s (1981) transition theory, as the aim of the study was to research teachers in a time of transition, and Kolb’s (1984) experiential learning theory, as teachers worked through the cycle of experiencing, reflecting, thinking, and acting. Data was collected through interviews, focus groups, and journaling. The site was …

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand, as a lived experience, the impact of repatriation on Third Culture Kids (TCKs). For this study, repatriation was generally defined as the transitional process of an individual moving from a host country back to the home country to attend college. The central research question for this study was aimed to gain insight into the lived experiences of TCKs whose lives were impacted by repatriation for higher education. The research sub-questions were designed to gain an understanding of the perceptions TCKs have about the preparedness of higher education institutions to meet …

Effects On The Social-Emotional Learning Of Students Identified As Twice-Exceptional: A Phenomenological Study, Heather Ann Bernau
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of students identified as intellectually gifted and having high functioning autism or Asperger’s syndrome. The study was conducted in participants’ homes or other neutral locations of the participants’ preference. The theory guiding this study was Bandura’s social cognitive theory. The social cognitive theory explains the relationship between personal factors, environmental factors, and behavior. Specifically, the study used multiple sources of data collection including a parent or adult-student questionnaire, self-portrait, three reflection items, and semi-structured interviews to study how learning interventions for students’ learning challenges (autism) affect the …

The Experience Of A White Professor Teaching Diversity Courses In The Midwest, Corinne Brion
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Facilitators of diversity courses in higher education institutions face multiple challenges because these courses are emotionally charged for students and facilitators alike. To date, there is a limited number of recent papers that focus on the reflections of professors from the dominant culture who teach diversity online and face-to-face graduate courses. The present paper fills this gap by describing the experiences of a White, French assistant professor in the Midwest of the United States. This paper also provides recommendations for practitioners.

Topic Modeling For Multi-Aspect Listwise Comparison, Delvin Ce Zhang, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As a well-established probabilistic method, topic models seek to uncover latent semantics from plain text. In addition to having textual content, we observe that documents are usually compared in listwise rankings based on their content. For instance, world-wide countries are compared in an international ranking in terms of electricity production based on their national reports. Such document comparisons constitute additional information that reveal documents' relative similarities. Incorporating them into topic modeling could yield comparative topics that help to differentiate and rank documents. Furthermore, based on different comparison criteria, the observed document comparisons usually cover multiple aspects, each expressing a distinct …
