An Lre Placement Loophole: A Critical Policy Analysis Of Lre Placement In Defining Disproportionality Of Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students In Special Education, Arti Sachdeva Jan 2021

An Lre Placement Loophole: A Critical Policy Analysis Of Lre Placement In Defining Disproportionality Of Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students In Special Education, Arti Sachdeva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The policies adopted by the Exceptional Children’s Education Act (2016) enabled disproportionality within LEAs by overlooking undocumented classroom removal practices, underestimating the monitoring and reporting criteria, and overlooking non-dominant cultural and linguistic groups within the Colorado community. In this critical policy analysis, I used quantitative methods to analyze and explore the difference between the odds ratio calculation of culturally and linguistically diverse students (CLDS) in special education with a least restrictive environment (LRE) of 40% and greater compared to Colorado’s acceptance of the federal mandate of the minimum requirement of the student LRE of less than 40% and alternate school …

The “Seven Equity Ins” – Institutional Inadequacy And Incompetency, Invisibility At The Intersectionality Of Inequity And Injustice: The Workplace Experiences Of African American Women Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Professionals In The California Community College System, Anissa Cessa Heard-Johnson

Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to understand the workplace experiences of African/African diaspora/African American/Black (A/Ad/AA/B) women employed with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) responsibilities in the California community college system during a time of new equity funding and contemporary social injustice movements: #MeToo, #TimesUp, and #Black Lives Matter. The intent was to document the professional experiences of these Black women, how social injustice was impacting their work, and what factors, if any, were assisting in their navigation of these turbulent times. The research study investigated the extent to which aspects of their community cultural wealth assisted …

Where Code Is Chaos: Content Platforms And Algorithmic Incentives, Amy L. Landers Jan 2021

Where Code Is Chaos: Content Platforms And Algorithmic Incentives, Amy L. Landers

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

This Article considers the intersection of the piracy paradox in the context of the attention economy, the algorithmic behavior of content platforms, and intellectual property's incentive theory. This inquiry is framed by a micro-history of a micro-dispute between two micro-celebrities about a color-block sweatshirt design of debatable originality. Because purchases are largely made to engage and support the creator as interactive communication, the arguments for legal protection for influencer merchandise are weak. Therefore, this field appears to be an ideal space for the operation of the piracy paradox.

This conclusion might be persuasive if anti-copying norms or other considerations minimized …

Informing Makerspace Outcomes Through A Linguistic Analysis Of Written And Video-Recorded Project Assessments, Kevin M. Oliver, Jennifer K. Houchins, Robert L. Moore, Chuang Wang Jan 2021

Informing Makerspace Outcomes Through A Linguistic Analysis Of Written And Video-Recorded Project Assessments, Kevin M. Oliver, Jennifer K. Houchins, Robert L. Moore, Chuang Wang

STEMPS Faculty Publications

A growing body of research focuses on what outcomes to assess in makerspaces, and appropriate formats for capturing those outcomes (e.g. reflections, surveys, and port-folios). Linguistic analysis as a data mining technique holds promise for revealing different dimensions of learning exhibited by students in makerspaces. In this study, student reflections on makerspace projects were gathered in 2 formats over 2 years: private written assessments captured in the 3D GameLab gamification platform, and semi-public video-recorded assessments posted in the more social FlipGrid platform. Transcripts of student assessments were analyzed using Linguistic Inquiry Word Count (LIWC) to generate 4 summary variables thought …

School Librarian Preparation And Practice: An Exploration Of The Aasl National School Library Standards And Ala/Aasl/Caep School Librarian Preparation Standards, Elizabeth A. Burns, April M. Dawkins

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) recently released standards to guide the practice of school librarians. The National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries (2018) were put forward as a single text with integrated frameworks. One year later, the ALA/AASL/CAEP School Librarian Preparation Standards (2019) were adopted to inform the preparation of school librarians. Using a one-way crosswalk analysis, this study explores the alignment of the AASL Standards Framework for School Librarians from the AASL Standards with the ALA/AASL/CAEP Preparation Standards to determine consistencies in expectations as well as identify noted gaps. Findings will assist …

‘I’M Never Saying A Damn Word Again’: Approaches To Community Support And Help Seeking Among Black Youth Experiencing Suicidal Thoughts, Alexis Renee Hopkins

Public Health Theses

Background. Suicidal behavior among Black youth is rising in the United States , yet little is known about how Black Youth engage and navigate suicidality. While we know that suicide ideation and death by suicide is decreasing overall among youth in the U.S., incidences of death by suicide are still rising among Black youth. There is very little understanding of what community support is accessible to Black youth who are experiencing suicidality. The present study examines how Black young adults who experienced suicidality in their youth turned to their social support systems and communities for support. Method. Seventeen semi-structured in-depth …

(De)Constructing The Grocery Store: An Ethnographic Examination Of Spatial Characteristics And Their Implications For Social Inclusion, Madeline Hoai Chau Nguyen Jan 2021

(De)Constructing The Grocery Store: An Ethnographic Examination Of Spatial Characteristics And Their Implications For Social Inclusion, Madeline Hoai Chau Nguyen

Public Health Theses

I acknowledge that this research was conducted on land stolen from the Mattabesic, Paugusett, and Schaghticoke tribes which is currently occupied by a Western colonial power.

This study examines the physical characteristics of the interior of New Haven grocery stores and how these are designed to socially include or exclude racial minorities. Drawing upon critical race theory and using ethnographic research methods, I analyze similarities and differences amongst selected independent American and Asian grocery stores and how they communicate their cultural values to various social groups. Even if it is not explicit, white supremacist values are embedded in these spaces. …

Ethnic Conflict In Côte D’Ivoire, Ayouba Doumbia Jan 2021

Ethnic Conflict In Côte D’Ivoire, Ayouba Doumbia

Dissertations and Theses

Since the early days of independence, the African continent has been the theatre of many ethnic conflicts. While people, in general, assume these conflicts to be political and blame the conflicts on authoritarian regimes, they dismissed the fact that conflict between ethnicities is a phenomenon that has occurred for hundreds of years and in all corners of the Earth. Entire countries have been devastated by years of ethnic strife. Once ethnic conflict breaks out, it is difficult to stop. Conflicts in the Balkans, Rwanda, Chechnya, Iraq, and Darfur are among the deadliest examples from the late 20th and early …

The Push Factors That Impact Sex Trafficking In The Former Soviet Union, Liliya Kenzhebayeva Jan 2021

The Push Factors That Impact Sex Trafficking In The Former Soviet Union, Liliya Kenzhebayeva

Dissertations and Theses

Sex trafficking is a global problem that has been denounced by the international community as a human rights abuse and determined to be a modern form of slavery. Through a comparative analysis of the experiences of Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine as they were a part of the Soviet Union the study identifies the push factors of sex trafficking in women as forced labor with particular emphasis on the role of weak legal systems and state institutions, corruption, social and economic factors, and environmental problems that are linked to organized crime (the Russian mafia) from 2001 to 2019. The thesis supports …

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Precipitous declines in biodiversity threaten planetary boundaries, requiring transformative changes to conservation. Colonial systems have decimated species and ecosystems and dispossessed Indigenous Peoples of their rights, territories, and livelihoods. Despite these challenges, Indigenous governed lands retain a large proportion of biodiversity-rich landscapes. Indigenous Peoples have stewarded the land in ways that support people and nature in respectful relationship. Biodiversity conservation and resurgence of Indigenous autonomies are mutually compatible aims. To work towards these aims requires significant transformation in conservation and re-Indigenization. Key to both are systems that value people and nature in all their diversity and relationships. This paper introduces …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Malnutrition, including both undernutrition and obesity, is a significant problem in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In order to study malnutrition and develop effective intervention strategies, it is crucial to evaluate nutritional status in LMICs at the individual, household, and community levels. In a multinational research project supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we have been using a wearable technology to conduct objective dietary assessment in sub-Saharan Africa. Our assessment includes multiple diet-related activities in urban and rural families, including food sources (e.g., shopping, harvesting, and gathering), preservation/storage, preparation, cooking, and consumption (e.g., portion size and nutrition analysis). …

Readability In The Canadian Tax System, Colin Jackson Jan 2021

Readability In The Canadian Tax System, Colin Jackson

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

This paper reports the results of a readability analysis of various parts of the Canadian tax system, with a particular focus on Canada’s income tax. The results indicate that Canada’s Income Tax Act is significantly more difficult to read than the taxation statutes of several comparable jurisdictions and more difficult to read than other Canadian legislation governing economic relationships. The guidance published by the Canada Revenue Agency for the use of tax professionals and the public appears more accessible. While it may be hoped that the statutory provisions that apply to low- and middle-income individuals would be more readable than …

Word Frequency Level And Lexical Coverage In The Reading Comprehension Texts Of The Malaysian University English Test, Melisa Charles Benedict, Ahmad Affendi Shabdin

PASAA

The central foundation of knowledge is through grasping what is being read. Therefore, it is significant to recognise the difficulty level of a reading text for better and comprehensive understanding. The present study is an attempt to identify the word frequency level and lexical coverage of the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) reading texts which is deemed to be intricate for students. The anticipation of the Education Ministry of Malaysia is that students are capable and competent in comprehending academic texts which is required of them at the university. Nonetheless, the problem lies in students’ lack of vocabulary size and …

Diversity Of Cultural Sources In Elt Activity Books: A Case Study Of A Multicultural Primary School In Thailand, Kulthida Saemee, Singhanat Nomnian Jan 2021

Diversity Of Cultural Sources In Elt Activity Books: A Case Study Of A Multicultural Primary School In Thailand, Kulthida Saemee, Singhanat Nomnian

PASAA

Thai government schools have become multicultural due to an increasing number of migrant students whose parents are from neighboring ASEAN countries. Although published English language teaching (ELT) materials have been researched extensively, supplementary materials that are integrated as additional resources for teachers and students such as workbooks or activity books used in Thai government schools are under-researched. This study investigated the cultural diversity content represented in six ELT activity books used in a primary school located in Samut Sakhon province in Thailand. Cortazzi and Jin’s (1999) cultural concept was employed as a framework to analyze layers of cultural diversity represented …

Thai Tertiary Learners’ Attitudes Towards Their Thai English Accent, Eric A. Ambele, Yusop Boonsuk Jan 2021

Thai Tertiary Learners’ Attitudes Towards Their Thai English Accent, Eric A. Ambele, Yusop Boonsuk

PASAA

The global spread of English nowadays has led to a shifted role in the use of English as an international lingua franca in expanding-circle contexts like Thailand. The purpose of this study was therefore to examine Thai university students’ attitudes towards their own Thai-English accent, in addition to how the notion of standard language ideology in Thailand plays an influential role in their English accent attitudes. The research further explores the perspectives of the students regarding their acceptability of Thai-English accent by adopting a mixed-method approach using both questionnaire and interview as research instruments. The findings reveal a controversial perspective …

The Relationship Between Culture And The Learning And Teaching Of English: A North-Eastern Thailand Perspective Under A Socio-Cultural Lens, Steven Graham Jan 2021

The Relationship Between Culture And The Learning And Teaching Of English: A North-Eastern Thailand Perspective Under A Socio-Cultural Lens, Steven Graham

PASAA

This qualitative study focuses on the adoption of learner-centeredness in the English language classroom, and whether it is mediated by culture. With the use of observations, and interviews, and using a socio-cultural framework, this investigation examines primary school teachers’ perceptions of learner-centered teaching, how they implement that teaching in the classroom and how this is negotiated by culture. Students’ perceptions of their learning are also reflected upon. The research findings reveal that most teachers were able to demonstrate aspects of learnercentered teaching; however, they were not proficient in explaining theory. They emphasised that their effectiveness was impacted by a lack …

Using Ted Talks For Extensive Listening, Euodia Inge Gavenila, Mega Wulandari, Willy A. Renandya Jan 2021

Using Ted Talks For Extensive Listening, Euodia Inge Gavenila, Mega Wulandari, Willy A. Renandya

PASAA

Extensive listening (EL) is an approach to teaching listening which can help students develop their listening fluency in a more enjoyable way. However, unlike extensive reading which has now enjoyed widespread recognition, EL has received relatively little attention, partly because of the limited availability of suitable listening materials. Given the popularity of TED Talks which are freely available online, we were interested in exploring this online resource as a source of EL materials for our college EFL students. Two questions guided our research: (1) what factors are considered important by EFL students when choosing TED Talks as their extensive listening …

Participants in this study were 120 EFL teachers (60 from public schools and 60 from private institutes) in Urmia, Iran. The researchers administered Ho and Au's (2006) job satisfaction questionnaire and Maslach, Jackson, and Leiter's (1996) burnout questionnaire, containing 22 items each, to measure the teachers' job satisfaction and burnout levels, respectively. Having collected the quantitative data, the researchers interviewed 10 participants to find out the sources of teachers' job dissatisfaction …

“She Taught Me Words”: The Availability Of Vocabulary Help In Efl Classrooms During Cooperative Learning’S Peer Interaction, Puji Astuti, Leslie Barratt Jan 2021

“She Taught Me Words”: The Availability Of Vocabulary Help In Efl Classrooms During Cooperative Learning’S Peer Interaction, Puji Astuti, Leslie Barratt

PASAA

While literature suggests the significance of peer interaction for language learners, little is known about how the interaction specifically works to benefit them. Additionally, while putting students in groups has become a widespread practice in language classrooms, most teachers appear not to have a clear idea of how to structure classroom interaction and cooperation so that learning goes in the direction of helping learners to attain communicative competence. To address the gap in the literature and lessen the theory-practice contrast, this qualitative case study was conducted by looking at how cooperative learning (CL) processed in EFL classrooms, with specific attention …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study aimed to research the perspectives of four teachers who teach low-scoring populations of students traditionally. The research questions focused on job satisfaction, self-efficacy, and retention in education about Value-Added Model scores in their evaluations. The secondary purpose was for the teachers to recommend authentic assessment of student growth which is weighted 33% of teacher evaluations. I conducted a series of three open-ended interviews with each of the four participants. The interviews were designed to allow rich data to be collected. The significant findings have been discovered using the constant comparative method. The analysis revealed that the teacher’s …

Cause And Effect In Antidiscrimination Law, Hillel J. Bavli Jan 2021

Cause And Effect In Antidiscrimination Law, Hillel J. Bavli

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Standards of causation in antidiscrimination law, and disparate-treatment cases in particular, are deeply flawed. Their defects have caused an illogical, obscure, and unworkable proof scheme that requires an overhaul to curb the harm that it engenders and to allow the antidiscrimination statutes to serve their objectives effectively. This Article proposes a theory and method of causation that achieves this goal. The problem stems from the inadequacies associated with current standards of causation in disparate-treatment cases—the but-for test and the motivating-factor test. The proposed “factorial” approach introduces a causal standard that addresses these inadequacies. It entails three innovations over current causation …

Dental Impression Tray Selection From Maxillary Arch Images Using Multi-Feature Fusion And Ensemble Classifier, Muhammad Asif Hasan, Norli Anida Abdullah, Mohammad Mustaneer Rahman, Mohd Yamani Idna Idris, Omar F. Tawfiq

Research Publications (2021 to 2025)

Dental impression tray is frequently used in dentistry to record the patient's oral structure for clinical oral diagnosis and treatment planning. Manual procedure of taking impressions is costly, time-consuming, and additionally, no research has been done on selecting dental impression tray from dental arch images using computer vision in real-life scenarios. In this spirit, an intelligent model is proposed based on computer vision and machine learning to select appropriate dental impression trays from maxillary arch images. A dataset of 52 patients' maxillary arch images have been acquired and various sets of features such as colors, textures, and shapes of the …
