Effects Of Intergroup Ideologies On Willingness To Engage In Intergroup Contact With Essentialism As A Mediator, Piraorn Suvanbenjakule Jan 2021

Effects Of Intergroup Ideologies On Willingness To Engage In Intergroup Contact With Essentialism As A Mediator, Piraorn Suvanbenjakule

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Various studies have found that merely interacting with an outgroup does not necessarily lead to better intergroup relations. The prejudice against Myanmar in Thailand is still an issue that needs solving. Therefore, cultures should be understood as an ongoing process in the hope that it would be more consistent with the current social environment and improve intergroup relations. The first study was a cross-sectional study that examined the self-reported scores of polyculturalism and the willingness to engage in intergroup contact with essentialism as a mediator. The online survey was distributed, and 112 high-school and university students were included in the …

Assessing Dairy Farm Employees Health, Leyby Stephany Guifarro Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This Master thesis evaluates the impact of general health care and eating habits (Study 1), vision care (Study 2), and mental health status (Study 3) on Latino dairy farmworkers lifestyle and work performance in South Dakota. We hypothesized that the health status of dairy workers has a negative impact on the workers’ job performance. In study 1, data from a total of 70 participants were collected, using a face-to-face survey in Spanish, which allowed us to assess various topics and details related to employees’ daily routine tasks, eating habits, and general health status. Furthermore, recommendations to improve general health care …

Cyclical Change In The Sleep-Emotion Relationship, Olivia H. Tousignant Jan 2021

Cyclical Change In The Sleep-Emotion Relationship, Olivia H. Tousignant

Psychology Department Dissertations

Research has begun to elucidate psychological processes involved in optimal sleep experience; the current study examines how sleep reciprocally relates to emotional valence and emotional arousal. To understand the nature of sleep-wake emotional cycles, the compatibility of sleep theory and dimensional emotion theory needs to be tested. The current ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study examines patterns that construct (a) emotion characteristics that predict sleep and (b) sleep components that predict emotion characteristics and their fluctuation. Longitudinal multilevel data was collected from 198 adult participants via an online platform. Participants completed a measure of baseline insomnia severity status. For up to …

Star Wars: Galaxy’S Edge As Postcolonial Fantasy: Disney, Labor, And The Renegotiation Of Border Discourses, Diana Leon-Boys, Christopher Chávez Jan 2021

Star Wars: Galaxy’S Edge As Postcolonial Fantasy: Disney, Labor, And The Renegotiation Of Border Discourses, Diana Leon-Boys, Christopher Chávez

Communication Faculty Publications

In the summer of 2019, Disneyland opened Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, an immersive experience where visitors imagine themselves as members of a resistance army fighting against a colonizing power. As Disney’s theme parks have increasingly become conduits of global flows, the company’s original brand of U.S. exceptionalism has become incompatible with the company’s strategic needs. In this article, we argue that Disney’s newest themed land, Galaxy’s Edge, functions as a reworking of Disney’s colonial discourse and borderland narrative, where postracial borderland fantasies coincide with the conglomerate’s evolution from a national project to a global enterprise. Within this intergalactic borderland, racialized …

Introduction - Multiculturalism, Communication, And Critical Citizenship Studies, Hsin-I Cheng Jan 2021

Introduction - Multiculturalism, Communication, And Critical Citizenship Studies, Hsin-I Cheng

Communication

Since 2015, the movements of refugees and migrants have intensified discussions on citizenship in both Eastern and Western societies. The image of Aylan, a three-year-old Syrian boy lying on a beach, triggered global conversations on citizenship, borders, and nationhood. In Germany, Chancellor Merkel worked swiftly on refugees’ settlement in German society and encountered much resistance. In the United States, discussions of policies to curtail immigrants, migrants, and refugees became heated after the 2016 presidential election. In Taiwan, given the country’s ethnic diversity and politically controversial status as a nation-state, political economists urged the government to accept and treat refugees and …

Getting Ahead Of The Game: Financial Fundamentals For Prospective College Students, Dia Taliaferro Jan 2021

Getting Ahead Of The Game: Financial Fundamentals For Prospective College Students, Dia Taliaferro

West Chester University Master’s Theses

As the cost of college and student loan debt increase, there is also a concern with the lack of financial literacy from Black low-income students. Students are eager to attend college and obtain a college degree, yet they are barely prepared academically and financially. Not only are students unaware of the total cost to attend college but their support system (parents/guardian and family) are also not familiar with the basic financial fundamentals to prepare for higher education. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the influences and resources available to Black low-income students. Colleges and universities can support prospective …

Gaining An Upper Hand: How Gesture Usage During Conflict Resolution Predicts Family Cohesion During The Transition To College, Martha Chan Jan 2021

Gaining An Upper Hand: How Gesture Usage During Conflict Resolution Predicts Family Cohesion During The Transition To College, Martha Chan

West Chester University Master’s Theses

The purpose of this project is to examine the frequency of hand gestures used by family triads (mother, father, and emerging adult offspring) engaging in a conflict resolution task. The hypotheses explored in this thesis expand upon previous research by Chu, Meyer, Foulkes, & Kita (2014), which suggested that the frequency of gestures individuals use may be related to their own desire to communicate clearly, while also functioning as a way to ensure that the listener understands the information they are conveying. In addition, the usage of gestures conveys to all parties the level of attention each participant has invested …

Queer Arab American Experiences: Navigating Cross Cultural Expectations Of Gender And Sexuality, Gabriela Mansour Jan 2021

Queer Arab American Experiences: Navigating Cross Cultural Expectations Of Gender And Sexuality, Gabriela Mansour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The understanding of the experiences of queer Arab Americans and the ways in which they navigate cross cultural expectations of gender and sexuality is limited in the anthropology or social sciences scholarship. The available scholarship focuses primarily on queerness in juxtaposition to Islam, which is not relatable to all Arab Americans as they are a religiously diverse group. Through an intersectional approach, this research, conducted from April 2020 to May 2021, explores the lived experiences of queer Arab Americans from across the United States (U.S.) while seeking to identify potential commonalities that could encompass a more general queer Arab American …

How Twitter Exposes Daily Whiteness Practices In Mexico And Argentina, Erika Maribel Heredia Jan 2021

How Twitter Exposes Daily Whiteness Practices In Mexico And Argentina, Erika Maribel Heredia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This dissertation questions: How is the social imaginary about the meaning of being white in Mexico produced, reproduced, and problematized in Twitter Discourse? How is the social imaginary about the meaning of being white in Argentina produced, reproduced, and problematized in Twitter Discourse? How are the social imaginaries in Twitter Discourse in Mexico and Argentina related to the cultural and symbolic power exercised by the United States, and does US power influence the structure of privileges built around Whiteness? For doing that, I collected up to 10K tweets using two keywords to identify discourses surrounding Whiteness in tweets from users …

The Seen And The Known, Jeffrey Wasch Jan 2021

The Seen And The Known, Jeffrey Wasch

West Chester University Master’s Theses

This project is a response to the question: what is the role of language in knowledge and experience? My answer is that knowledge must be purely linguistic, but experience has a non-linguistic level constructed by the senses. I suggest that a result of this is that there are two fundamentally different kinds of content which make up experience, the phenomenological content which is related to the senses, and the semantic content that is made up of language and constructs belief, justification, and knowledge. But then we have a question about how these two kinds of content interact? How is observational …

Proximate Cause Untangled, Mark A. Geistfeld Jan 2021

Proximate Cause Untangled, Mark A. Geistfeld

Faculty Articles

The many facets of tort liability are filtered through the requirement of proximate cause, which has made the element confusing and the source of considerable controversy. Is proximate cause properly determined by the directness test or the foreseeability test, each of which has been both widely adopted and roundly criticized? Is there any defensible conception of a direct cause? Is foreseeability an adequately determinate method for limiting liability? If so, is foreseeability relevant to duty, to proximate cause, or to both elements? Disagreement about all these matters stems from the failure to fully untangle the role of proximate cause across …

Birth Rights And Birth Wrongs Through A Common Law Lens: Why The No Liability Regime Is Likely To Endure, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2021

Birth Rights And Birth Wrongs Through A Common Law Lens: Why The No Liability Regime Is Likely To Endure, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

A saga in four parts: Dov Fox’s recent book, the aptly named Birth Rights and Wrongs, is, as its title suggests, a study of the stark conflicts that arise in the highly contested area of reproductive rights. Fox makes the powerful case that the legal protection of reproductive rights, in all their protean forms, is systematically under-protected relative to two key benchmarks: the standards of ordinary decency, and social expectations. In my view, he has an acute awareness of these failures. But his greatest strength is also his greatest weakness, as he systematically ignores the great successes wrought through the …

Centering Racial Equity: Disparities Task Forces As A Strategy To Ensure An Equitable Pandemic Response, Dawn M. Hunter, Betsy Lawton Jan 2021

Centering Racial Equity: Disparities Task Forces As A Strategy To Ensure An Equitable Pandemic Response, Dawn M. Hunter, Betsy Lawton

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

COVID-19 has had a stark and severe impact on health, economic stability, housing, and education in communities of color in the United States. As the pandemic has unfolded, the disproportionate number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths due to COVID-19 among Black, Hispanic and Latinx, and Indigenous people has served as a stark reminder that the systems and structures that lead to these disparities need to be changed in order to achieve equitable outcomes.

This Article assesses efforts by cities, counties, states, and organizations to address the impact of COVID-19 on communities of color through formal task forces or working groups …

Seeking Safety While Giving Birth During The Pandemic, Elizabeth Kukura Jan 2021

Seeking Safety While Giving Birth During The Pandemic, Elizabeth Kukura

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

As COVID-19 spread throughout the United States in early 2020, many pregnant people sought alternatives to delivering in a hospital. Midwifery practices offering services at home or in a freestanding birth center reported record numbers of inquiries, including from people looking to transfer care near the end of pregnancy. Whether due to fear of COVID-19 exposure in health care settings or out of a desire to avoid restrictive hospital policies regarding support people and newborn separation, people who had not previously considered home birth were newly drawn to midwifery care and others who had considered a midwife-attended birth redoubled their …

Policies Of Exclusion: The Impact Of Covid-19 On People With Disabilities, Amanda M. Caleb, Stacy Gallin Jan 2021

Policies Of Exclusion: The Impact Of Covid-19 On People With Disabilities, Amanda M. Caleb, Stacy Gallin

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on marginalized groups and has amplified the social and health inequalities in society, particularly for people with disabilities (PwDs), who are at higher risk of dying from the coronavirus. As such, it is vital that policies and practices include and protect PwDs, yet that is not the case across the United States. In this article, we examine policies related to COVID-19 that have further othered PwDs and that have created practical and theoretical inequity. In looking at public health strategies that are meant to protect the public, we argue that measures such as social …

The Backfiring Effects Of Forced Political Allegiance In The Online World: The Case Of Preferred Pronouns On Twitter, Yin Lok Linus Chan Jan 2021

The Backfiring Effects Of Forced Political Allegiance In The Online World: The Case Of Preferred Pronouns On Twitter, Yin Lok Linus Chan

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Political divisions in the United States have led to conflating political issues with political parties. People who possess a set of intercorrelated beliefs (e.g. pro-immigration, prochoice) are assumed to be liberal, while those who hold opposing intercorrelated beliefs are assumed to be conservative. Impression management research suggests that in the online world, minor cues on one’s social media profile that display political beliefs serve as indicators of people’s political ideology. While people are free to declare their political views on personal social media accounts, what happens when people perceive that they are forced to appear aligned with one political group …

School Leadership Under Apartheid South Africa As Portrayed In The Apartheid Archive Projectand Interpreted Through Freirean Education, Kevin Bruce Deitle Jan 2021

School Leadership Under Apartheid South Africa As Portrayed In The Apartheid Archive Projectand Interpreted Through Freirean Education, Kevin Bruce Deitle

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach to examine how teachers, school leaders, and students rationalize their roles in the educational process when their institution is bounded by an educational system that openly strives against them. For a context, this study examined apartheid-era South Africa, from 1948 to 1994, which established social and administrative policies that deliberately curtailed the education of Indigenous and other South Africans, as a means of oppressing non-European ethnic groups.

In lieu of face-to-face interviews, stories and interviews submitted to The Apartheid Archive Project, curated by the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, portrayed …
