Enhancing Learners’ Reading Comprehension Skills Using Multimodality In A Form Two Classroom In A Public Secondary School In Taita Taveta County: An Action Research., Lilian Mandilla Jan 2021

Enhancing Learners’ Reading Comprehension Skills Using Multimodality In A Form Two Classroom In A Public Secondary School In Taita Taveta County: An Action Research., Lilian Mandilla

Master of Education

In the recent past, rapid technological advancements coupled with the increasing learner diversity as a result of social, economic, political, and cultural factors have completely altered the meaning process. The use of multiple representations of educational content would therefore, appropriate these learner differences and the multiplicity of text. A considerable body of knowledge indicates that multimodality provides affordance to multiple means of representation, expression, perception, and engagement thus promoting active learning. Numerous studies in the English language continue to indicate that multimodality is used in the teaching and learning of varied aspects of the English language. Based on other studies …

Performing Multiculturalism: Ukrainian-Canadian Identities In Transnational Politics Of Recognition, Olga Glinskii Jan 2021

Performing Multiculturalism: Ukrainian-Canadian Identities In Transnational Politics Of Recognition, Olga Glinskii

Anthropology ETDs

As a result of specific aspects of history, including historically complex diasporas, contemporary Ukrainian identities -- both socially normative and personal -- are subject to a transnational politics of recognition. Whereas Charles Taylor has done more than any other scholar to highlight obligatory and unavoidable character of the politics of identity today, his univocal approach to the relations among language, culture, and identity is inadequate for illuminating the Ukrainian situation. In this dissertation I show that Ukrainians of different sorts employ situational strategies for mobilizing a set of perspectively valid --though not always logically consistent -- historically based ontologies. I …

Tracking The Development Of Communication In Parents With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Megan Bahns Jan 2021

Tracking The Development Of Communication In Parents With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Megan Bahns

Undergraduate Research Journal

Compared to their typically developing (TD) peers, most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) develop language skills later and at slower rates. Previous research has found that verbal input shapes the linguistic development of young TD children and children at risk for developmental delays. One area that is not well understood is whether certain aspects of communication (i.e., rate of verbal output, rate of gestures) of the caretaker play a role in how language is developed in children with ASD over time. The purpose of this study is to explore the linguistic behavior of the caretaker (i.e., the mother) when …

Canada’S Amendment Rules: A Window Into The Soul Of A Constitution - Review Essay Of Richard Albert, Constitutional Amendments: Making, Breaking, And Changing Constitutions, Jamie Cameron

Articles & Book Chapters

This Review Essay forms part of a special issue of the Manitoba Law Journal (forthcoming) dedicated to Richard Albert, Constitutional Amendments: Making, Breaking, and Changing Constitutions. Years in the making, Constitutional Amendments explains how amendment rules define a constitution’s integrity, ensuring its longevity by allowing and even inviting formal changes to its text. Albert’s work is prodigious and monumental, connecting abstract issues of textual design to the follies of constitutional amendment over diverse variables of time and place. This Review focuses selectively on Constitutional Amendments and its implications for Canadian amendment constitutionalism, exploring Albert’s view that amendment rules expose …

Improving Campus Racial Climate: A Reimagining Of Student Organizations, Elissa Wingfield Jan 2021

Improving Campus Racial Climate: A Reimagining Of Student Organizations, Elissa Wingfield

West Chester University Master’s Theses

This thesis addresses racial and/or cultural student-led organizations, cultural and racial identity development and its impact on campus racial climate. I look at the relationship of campus racial climate, and how it impacts undergraduate student participation, comfort and success both during and after graduation. I explore the research and data from studies conducted with minority students regarding their personal experiences and their own racial development. With this research I propose a reimagined relationship between student organizations, their partnerships, programming, and faculty. This issue is of importance to all members of society, regardless of their educational choices following high school. These …

Scallywag Pedagogy, Peter Mclaren, Petar Jandrić Jan 2021

Scallywag Pedagogy, Peter Mclaren, Petar Jandrić

Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters

This chapter explores the dynamic between truth and deceit in twenty-first-century transnational capitalism, emerging neo-fascist movements, and post-truth media landscapes marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and the anthropogenic bioinformational challenge. It establishes the centrality of the concept of truth in revolutionary critical pedagogy and underscores the importance of linking true words with true actions in the formation of critical praxis. Revolutionary praxis consists of the dialectical process of self and social formation, while critical educators are situated as protagonistic agents who work in and through history. Truth is therefore not about a timeless or objective state we name history. Action …

"This chapter unpacks the complex topics of school violence, school safety, and school climate as they apply to modern schools. Relevant models will be discussed that have been used by schools and communities to fashion safe and supportive learning environments, specifically in an effort to foster welcoming school campuses and thriving student development. The following sections provide an overview of the interaction of school safety and school climate and how these constructs are directly linked to student mental and emotional well-being. We then discuss a multidisciplinary approach to addressing these constructs and share an existing model that can be used …

Exploring Teachers’ Use Of The Inquiry-Based Framework In Teaching English Language In The International Baccalaureate Programme: A Case Of A Private Primary School, In Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania., Shazma Mehboob Jaffer Jan 2021

Exploring Teachers’ Use Of The Inquiry-Based Framework In Teaching English Language In The International Baccalaureate Programme: A Case Of A Private Primary School, In Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania., Shazma Mehboob Jaffer

Master of Education

Inquiry-based learning is a lauded approach in the teaching of English language. However, studies based on some IB PYP Schools indicate that teachers still face challenges in the teaching of English, using the inquiry approach, whereas learners face difficulties in reading, writing and problem solving. This case study, therefore, explored how English teachers used the inquiry-based framework in the teaching of English language at the IB PYP School, in Tanzania. Six teachers from Grade one to six along with the former PYP Coordinator participated in this study. The data collection methods used included interviews, observations and document analysis. Data from …

The Tragedy Of Central European University: Theorizing Hungarian Illiberal Democracy And Its Threat To Academic Freedom, Jessica M. Zaccagnino Jan 2021

The Tragedy Of Central European University: Theorizing Hungarian Illiberal Democracy And Its Threat To Academic Freedom, Jessica M. Zaccagnino

Connecticut Law Review

The global proliferation of radical right political movements and the decline of democracy are defining features of our current moment. Authoritarian leaders ascend to power through the ballot box, but at once, they systematically consolidate control over the state and civil society. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the Fidesz party is emblematic of illiberal democracy, a term originally coined by Fareed Zakaria. This Note applies Zakaria’s illiberal democracy to Hungary while adjusting the contours of his theory to better account for the role of anti-intellectualism and nationalism in the illiberal toolkit. This Note also investigates the Orbán government’s targeting …

Original Expectations, Mark A. Graber Jan 2021

Original Expectations, Mark A. Graber

Connecticut Law Review

Professor Kay’s increasingly lonely crusade for interpreting constitutional provisions in light of their original intentions captures how constitutions should be implemented immediately after ratification, with the important proviso that expectations matter as much as intentions. Insisting that the constitution on day one mandates X, even though everyone responsible for the constitution thought the constitution mandated not X, violates common sense. A jurisprudence of original intentions at day one acknowledges that constitutions are political documents that serve political purposes and avoids making linguistic theory the practical arbiter when debates break out over impeachment procedures, the regulation of slavery, and the status …

Saving Substantial Similarity, 73 Fla. L. Rev. 591 (2021), Daryl Lim

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

Substantial similarity, an analysis of the similarity between two works, is the fulcrum of copyright infringement. Recent cases involving Led Zeppelin's signature song “Stairway to Heaven,” the award-winning movie “The Shape of Water,” and Google and Oracle's dispute over computer code all required courts to grapple with this fundamental analysis. This Article reveals that today's copyright plaintiffs have only a one-in-ten chance of winning--the worst in a century--and also discusses the cause of this trend--defendants' devastatingly effective use of pretrial motions and the rise of lawsuits against nonrival defendants. Scholarly debates on substantial similarity typically revolve around the works of …

It Happened Centuries Ago: Using Gis And Spatial Analysis To Map The Quilombo Dos Palmares, Charlotte Mills Jan 2021

It Happened Centuries Ago: Using Gis And Spatial Analysis To Map The Quilombo Dos Palmares, Charlotte Mills

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

In Brazil, the largest escaped slave community in the Americas incorporated multiple settlements into a united federation. This was Palmares, named for the palm forests where community members sheltered in the Captaincy of Pernambuco. Encompassing nine individual villages at its height in the mid-1600s, only one known settlement has been extensively studied by archaeologists. The remaining eight have not been definitively located. Through historiography, spatial analysis, and remote sensing techniques, the locations of the eight unknown sites of Palmares may be estimated using geographic information science. Introducing spatial analysis into the current body of Palmares literature offers new insights and …

Children's Sensitivity To Prosody And Ostension In Answers To Wh-Questions, Bethany Stoddard, Jill De Villiers Jan 2021

Children's Sensitivity To Prosody And Ostension In Answers To Wh-Questions, Bethany Stoddard, Jill De Villiers

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

This paper examines the effects of two often overlooked factors in children’s answers to wh-questions: the prosodic contour of the question and the complexity of the visual stimuli. There are two potential effects on the interpretation of a question in English: whether it is moved, and what kind of prosody it has.

Why Undermining Evolutionary Debunkers Is Not Enough, Andrew Del Rio Jan 2021

Why Undermining Evolutionary Debunkers Is Not Enough, Andrew Del Rio

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Denying the conclusion of a valid argument is not generally permissible if one suspends on one premise of the argument and believes the other premise(s). This can happen when one’s only critique of an argument is to undermine one premise. There is incoherence there. Here I examine how this is relevant to the debate on evolutionary debunking of our moral knowledge. I argue that one significant line of response to the debunker is unsuccessful: merely undermining the debunker’s empirical claim. It is not rational to respond this way and believe one has moral knowledge. First I present evidence that prominent …

The non-profit agency participating in this study had already listed on its strategic plan the delivery of teletherapy. In 2020, due to the pandemic, the agency decided to expedite the delivery of teletherapy services. This study explored the experiences of the agency’s team, to determine what worked well while making this transition, as well as future dreams regarding the delivery of teletherapy. Appreciative inquiry was used as the method of data collection. Findings indicated the agency’s clinicians found keeping a positive …

Spectral And Latent Representation Distortion For Tts Evaluation, Thananchai Kongthaworn Jan 2021

Spectral And Latent Representation Distortion For Tts Evaluation, Thananchai Kongthaworn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

One of the main problems in the development of text-to-speech (TTS) systems is its reliance on subjective measures, typically the Mean Opinion Score (MOS). MOS requires a large number of people to reliably rate each utterance, making the development process slow and expensive. Recent research on speech quality assessment tends to focus on training models to estimate MOS, which requires a large number of training data, something that might not be available in low-resource languages. We propose an objective assessment metric based on the DTW distance using the spectrogram and the high-level features from an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) model …
