Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The context is an element which works out of the linguistic system that helps to understand the text and decode its symbols. It cannot be dispensed with in levels, and contributes to determining the meanings intended for it. As for the syntax text, it is a science and direction in the linguistic lesson whose ultimate goal is to understand the syntactic interconnections of a single sentence into a long or short chain of sentences that make up a specific text
The purpose of this research is to shed light on linguistic blog of Amali Al-Zajjaji, T 337 A.D Which includes …

Learning Strategies Preference Of Iraqi Efl Learners, Umer Ali Alyas
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The current study aims at investigating Iraqi EFL learners’ knowledge and preference of language learning strategies. Data are collected using two self-reported questionnaires; a background questionnaire and the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL, Oxford, 1990) with some modifications to meet the needs of this study. The following questions are asked: 1-Are students aware of the concept of LLS? 2- If yes, how much they know about it? 3- What are the kinds of LLS they employed in their learning? 4- What are their preferred strategies? The questionnaires are submitted to a total sample that consists of 77 students. The …

Collaboration Between Librarians And Academics In The Department Of Information Studies For Curriculum Development In Kzn, Petros Pn Dlamini, Bethiweli Mlambo, T Masenya
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The aim of this study is to assess the level of collaboration between librarians and Library and Information Science (LIS) academics for the development of the LIS curriculum, being aware that collaboration is an instructional strategy that positively affects student academic achievement. The term collaboration has become popular concept in areas of life where two or more individuals, organisations, institutions or nation embark upon a mutually agreed process. Collaboration provides the opportunity for experts and researchers to partner and fine-tune thoughts and develop strategies for multi-dimensional thinking towards achieving common and uniform practice. Collaboration between librarians and LIS academics has …

Juan Baptista De Segura And The Failure Of The Florida Jesuit Mission, 1566-1572, Frank Marotti, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
Eugene Lyon in The Enterprise of Florida states that it is important not to ignore the “private side” of the Spanish conquest of the New World. Despite Lyon’s admonition, the personal aspect of the attempted spiritual conquest of La Florida by the Society of Jesus between 1566 and 1572, particularly its relation to the failure of the apostolic enterprise, remains somewhat neglected. The central hypothesis of this study is that the human frailties of Juan Baptista de Segura, the superior of the Jesuit undertaking, played a major role in an evangelical disaster. Segura, a fascinating idealist, after experiencing frustrating failures …

Philosophical Foundations Of African Women's Indigenous Knowledge For Food Security: Towards Narrative Feminist Pedagogy, Humphrey Jeremiah Ojwang, Wanjiku Mukabi Kabira, Penninah Amolo Ogada
FDLA Journal
This paper explores the pedagogical value of African Women’s Indigenous Knowledge or Food Security. The approach is narratological and takes into account oral testimonies and life-stories of women farmers in Homa Bay County, Kenya. The paper proposes African feminist epistemology as a viable approach in the pedagogy of food security and agricultural extension in rural Kenya. This is a paradigm shift which incorporates women farmers’ indigenous knowledge in formal agricultural education and extension programmes. The paradigm shift to African feminist epistemology is a response to a pedagogical anomaly where women’s indigenous knowledge has been relegated to the sidelines, with hegemonic …

Linguistic Ability As A Major Component Of Foreign Language Communicative Competence, Diyora Pardaeva Tahirovna Teacher
Central Asian Journal of Education
А substantial number of studies have been conducted on these three competences, they have not been conflated for discussion in a single study. Adding this piece to the jigsaw, the current paper explores these three competences in depth. This paper had a twin purpose of 1) providing a historical account of the linguistic, communicative and interactional competences, and 2) reviewing of the literature on them in order to identify gaps, if any, with the intention to propose new research ideas pertinent to the three types of competences. In order to achieve the study aims, an intensive literature survey was conducted. …

Cultivating Culturally Responsive Elementary Teachers In A Suburban Title I School, Angela L. Mack
Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations
Research suggests increased enrollment of students with diverse cultural, racial, linguistic, and social backgrounds will continue in schools across the United States over the coming years; thereby, imposing a challenge for some teachers with differing backgrounds to instruct culturally and linguistically diverse students. Without adequate professional development focused on culturally responsive teaching, it has been purported teachers will continue to adopt deficit perceptions and subpar practices that negatively impact students of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Thus, this study aimed to explore how a series of in-service professional development focused on culture, race, and pedagogy may influence teacher perceptions and …

Language Resource Center Faculty Research
Telecollaboration, also called virtual exchange or online intercultural exchange, is a form of collaborative learning whereby language learners in different locations engage in computer-mediated communication to complete tasks online. There is ample evidence that telecollaboration promotes the acquisition of language skills, intercultural competence, and digital literacies. Challenges faced implementing virtual exchanges include differences in time zones, learning objectives, academic calendars, and cultural attitudes. The present article describes a case of a multilateral telecollaboration project based on the facilitated dialogue model involving four institutions-two in Europe and two in the United States-that was designed to prepare students for the experience of …

War Comes To San Marcos, Lawrence Kinnaird
War Comes To San Marcos, Lawrence Kinnaird
Florida Historical Quarterly
Of all the military posts established by Spain in West Florida after the Revolutionary War, San Marcos de Apalache was the only one ever to come under enemy fire. When Spain signed the treaty of San Ildefonso on August 19, 1796, and joined France in the war against Britain, military posts on the Mississippi were prepared for possible attack from Canada. There were many alarms, but all proved false. Along the Gulf coast no Spanish post was besieged by the enemy until war was brought to San Marcos by William Augustus Bowles, a British half-pay officer, and his Indian supporters.
Immigrant Women In Tampa: The Italian Experience, 1890-1930, Gary R. Mormino
Immigrant Women In Tampa: The Italian Experience, 1890-1930, Gary R. Mormino
Florida Historical Quarterly
The historical study of women, particularly immigrant women, has advanced dramatically over the past decade. Recent scholarship has rescued from neglect a great deal of historical material and has placed in clearer perspective the important roles played by women in American society. Ultimately, women’s history will be fully integrated into the pageantry of the American experience. Sufficient specialized studies to accomplish this goal, however, do not yet exist. More regional and local investigations detailing the histories of women in many different locations, time periods, and life situations are required.
Florida Seminoles And The Census Of 1900, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
Florida Seminoles And The Census Of 1900, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
One of the most persistent problems confronting historians dealing with the Seminole Indians in Florida during the late-nineteenth century has been a paucity of reliable population data. In the first four decades of the modern tribal era, the years following cessation of the Third Seminole War in 1858, there was only one attempt at a comprehensive account of Florida Seminoles. That was a survey conducted in the winter of 1880-1881 by Clay MacCauley for the Smithsonian Institution, which yielded what has become the generally accepted base line population figures. He found 208 Seminoles residing in the state, the unhappy remnant …

Reflecting On Crucibles: Clarifying Values In Authentic Leaders, Louise Kelly, Eissa Hashemi
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This qualitative study explores the role of crucibles, life-triggering moments, parents’ life mottos and definitions of success, and holding values in the lives of authentic leaders. This research used the life-story approach to explore the experience of such concepts on authentic leaders. Self-identified leaders with more than five years of experience in a leadership position or in a role of managing and developing others were invited to this research. Qualified authentic leaders (between 65 to 80 in ALQ) were invited to a qualitative interview utilizing the life story approach to explore significant forming factors of their leadership qualities. An inductive …

Codes Of Ethics: Extending Classification Techniques With Natural Language Processing, Zachary Glass, E. Susanna Cahn
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Language is an indicator of how stakeholders view an ethics code’s intent, and key to distinguishing code properties, such as promoting ethical-valued decision-making or code-based compliance. This article quantifies ethics codes’ language using Natural Language Processing (NLP), then uses machine learning to classify ethics codes. NLP overcomes some inherent difficulties of “measuring” verbal documents. Ethics codes selected from lists of “best” companies were compared with codes from a sample of Fortune 500 companies. Results show that some of these ethics codes are different enough from the norm to be distinguished by an algorithm; indicating as well that lists of “best” …
Prudence, Ethics And Anticipation In Visionary Leaders, Yanick Farmer
Prudence, Ethics And Anticipation In Visionary Leaders, Yanick Farmer
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
In ethics, prudence is an essential skill in making informed decisions. Although several studies in various fields have dealt with the notion, few empirical studies have addressed one of its inextricable aspects: anticipation. To gain a better understanding of the notion, this study questioned fifteen leaders whose peers consider to be “visionary” in their respective fields. The results of this qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews describe the fundamental aspects of anticipation according to three categories: reasoning and trend analysis, implementation and strategy, and personality and values.

Language Maintenance In Utah: Spanish Heritage Speakers' Attitudes And Language Use, Perla Y. Escobar Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
The current study quantitatively and qualitatively investigated Spanish maintenance among 45 Spanish heritage language (SHL) speakers in Utah who completed a survey about their linguistic background, their attitudes toward Spanish, their self-rated Spanish proficiency, and their current Spanish usage. Nine participants were also interviewed to expound on their linguistic experience. Previous studies on language maintenance (Alba et al., 2002; Carreira & Kagan, 2011; Lanier, 2014; Lynch, 2000; Mejías et al., 2002; Potowski, 2004; Silva-Corvalán, 1994; Zentella, 1997) have analyzed different sociolinguistics factors that relate to Spanish maintenance and usage in areas with high Hispanic populations. Nevertheless, little research has been …
