The Visual Language Of Turkish Roman Dance, Bethan J. Carter Aug 2021

The Visual Language Of Turkish Roman Dance, Bethan J. Carter

Anthropology

Utilizing Peircean semiotics and Dell Hymes' Ethnography of Communication, this research analyzes the dance style known as Roman havasi or, Turkish Roman dance. Elements and influences under consideration include costuming, dance vocabulary, musical instruments and traditions, gender-based stylistic differences, spheres of performance, audience member and participant demographics, and notions of authenticity in embodiment and presentation. An abridged history of the Roman is also presented, including public policies that influence the rights and lifestyle of Turkish Roman, as such factors have influenced their sense of social belonging as well as their dance and musical expressions. Romani people have experienced marginalization wherever …

Modern Archaeology And The Brass Plates, Noel B. Reynolds Aug 2021

Modern Archaeology And The Brass Plates, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Contemporary Palestinian archaeology has produced two major threats to traditional interpretations of the history of ancient Israel. Scientific discomfort with the exodus story as an explanation for the sudden population expansion in southern Palestine at the beginning of the Iron Age (c.1200 BCE) has led to a wide variety of theories about how these Israelites could have been drawn from existing populations in the general area. And a glaring mismatch between the biblical glorification of David and Solomon’s “empire” and disparagement of the northern kingdom combined with the archaeological finding that the cities of the northern kingdom were far larger …

Lehi And Nephi As Trained Manassite Scribes, Noel B. Reynolds Aug 2021

Lehi And Nephi As Trained Manassite Scribes, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

This paper brings contemporary ANE scholarship in several fields together to construct an updated starting point for interpretation of the teachings of the Book of Mormon. It assembles findings from studies of ancient scribal culture, historical linguistics and epigraphy, Hebrew rhetoric, and the history and archaeology of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Levant, together with the traditions of ancient Israel to construct a contextualized perspective for understanding Lehi, Nephi, and their scribal training as they would have been understood by their contemporaries. Lehi and Nephi are shown to be the beneficiaries of the most advanced scribal training available in 7th century …

Women's Silenced Anger: A Feminist Reading Of Susanna, Elise Dubravec Aug 2021

Women's Silenced Anger: A Feminist Reading Of Susanna, Elise Dubravec

New Horizons

The story of Susanna tells of a woman sexually assaulted, accused of adultery, sentenced to death, and then saved by the prophet Daniel. Throughout the narrative, Susanna seems passive while she endures this dire experience. Underneath her outwardly submissive behavior and silence characteristic of biblical women, she is, I suggest, fuming with anger. This exegesis challenges Susanna’s historically docile interpretation by reading the story through a feminist lens of women’s anger. After problematizing common interpretations of Susanna’s character, I offer an empowered reading of Susanna that imbues her with agency by shifting attention to her anger. Within this interpretation, Susanna’s …

A Nation And Culture's Fight For Survival: How The Existing Indian Family Exception Renders Icwa Inapplicable, Keely Kleven Aug 2021

A Nation And Culture's Fight For Survival: How The Existing Indian Family Exception Renders Icwa Inapplicable, Keely Kleven

Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)

The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) was enacted to curtail the removal of Indian children from their tribes and families by allowing tribes to have jurisdiction over custody proceedings involving Indian children; it ensured the security of tribes by allowing them to pass Indian culture down from one generation to the next. The chances of Indian survival, as noted by Calvin Isaac, are significantly reduced when Indian children are raised in non-Indian homes or denied exposure to their heritage. Although some states have complied with the spirit of the ICWA, other states have created the existing Indian family (EIF) exception …

Utilizing Group Prenatal Care To Support Underserved Pregnant Women, Kathleen Shrader Aug 2021

Utilizing Group Prenatal Care To Support Underserved Pregnant Women, Kathleen Shrader

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background

Prenatal care is a valuable time for pregnant patients to ideally receive holistic care that considers their psychosocial and physical needs. It is a vital service that decreases morbidity and mortality.

Problem

Individual prenatal care visits may not provide enough support for patients with complex psychosocial needs. Group care offers a longer visit, and education and community for pregnant women. The Native American Health Center (NAHC) offers group visits that have not been streamlined, and due to staff turnover, have left new staff under-resourced in planning visits.

Intervention

A toolkit was provided to NAHC staff on how to provide …

Factors Influencing Student Continuance In Instrumental Music Classes: A Quantitative Analysis, Andrew Duncan Aug 2021

Factors Influencing Student Continuance In Instrumental Music Classes: A Quantitative Analysis, Andrew Duncan

Masters Theses, 2020-current

In this quantitative study I investigated relationships between motivation, music aptitude, academic achievement, race, gender, and instrument type and student continuance in their first year of instrumental music study. Beginning instrumental music students (n = 30) completed the EVC Survey (Kosovich et al., 2015) to determine expectancy, value, and cost. I collected data on music aptitude, gender, race, and instrument type from teacher and school records, and conducted binary logistic regression and Chi-Square tests in order to determine predictors of continuance in instrumental music classes. I excluded gender, race, and instrument type from the logistic regression model because they did …

Turn Of Phrase: Contrastive Pre-Training For Discourse-Aware Conversation Models, Roland Laboulaye Aug 2021

Turn Of Phrase: Contrastive Pre-Training For Discourse-Aware Conversation Models, Roland Laboulaye

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding long conversations requires recognizing a discourse flow unique to conversation. Recent advances in unsupervised representation learning of text have been attained primarily through language modeling, which models discourse only implicitly and within a small window. These representations are in turn evaluated chiefly on sentence pair or paragraph-question pair benchmarks, which measure only local discourse coherence. In order to improve performance on discourse-reliant, long conversation tasks, we propose Turn-of-Phrase pre-training, an objective designed to encode long conversation discourse flow. We leverage tree-structured Reddit conversations in English to, relative to a chosen conversation path through the tree, select paths of varying …

Feasibility Of Routine Quality Of Life Measurement For People Living With Dementia In Long-Term Care, M Hoben, S Banerjee, As Beeber, Sa Chamberlain, Et Al Aug 2021

Feasibility Of Routine Quality Of Life Measurement For People Living With Dementia In Long-Term Care, M Hoben, S Banerjee, As Beeber, Sa Chamberlain, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

OBJECTIVES: Maximizing quality of life (QoL) is the ultimate goal of long-term dementia care. However, routine QoL measurement is rare in nursing home (NH) and assisted living (AL) facilities. Routine QoL measurement might lead to improvements in resident QoL. Our objective was to assess the feasibility of using DEMQOL-CH, completed by long-term care staff in video calls with researchers, to assess health-related quality of life (HrQoL) of NH and AL residents with dementia or other cognitive impairment. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We included a convenience sample of 5 NHs and 5 AL facilities in the Canadian province of …

Closer To Earth: Scales Of Planning For Urban Waters, Kristine Holten-Andersen Aug 2021

Closer To Earth: Scales Of Planning For Urban Waters, Kristine Holten-Andersen

Nordes Conference Series

Climatic changes of waterbodies calls for new scales and approaches to planning of urban surface waters. Learning from a real-time case of planning practice, I display and discuss how limitations of sectorial logics, operational scales and schemes of planning, in addition to inherent epistemological prisons of dominant dichotomies, are obstacles of an actual reorientation of planning practice. On this background, I call upon further research – of a designerly and transformative kind, to explore novel approaches to municipal planning of surface waters. I speculate how this could evolve around a multidisciplinary rubber-boot approach with landscape architects performing as Sherpas, process …

Teaching Size, Area And Scale, Ingri Strand, Eva Lutnæs Aug 2021

Teaching Size, Area And Scale, Ingri Strand, Eva Lutnæs

Nordes Conference Series

Gaining an understanding of scale, area and size is an important part of the subject of Art and crafts. Although this skill should be practiced, perhaps even mastered, by pupils in primary education, it is regarded as difficult to teach, due to the skill being intangible and difficult to discuss. This paper seeks to aid in overcoming these difficulties, as it gathers initial findings from ongoing interviews with teachers on their strategies for teaching this important skill. Instead of highlighting one strategy as the best, we wish to showcase a broad range of appropriate approaches to this theme. Tensions between …

The Use Of Introspective Reports To Predict Subsequent Memory: Implementing Machine Learning For Judgment-Of-Learning Paradigms, Nathan Lloyd Anderson Aug 2021

The Use Of Introspective Reports To Predict Subsequent Memory: Implementing Machine Learning For Judgment-Of-Learning Paradigms, Nathan Lloyd Anderson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in machine learning have allowed for the use of natural language responses to predict outcomes of interest to memory researchers such as the confidence with which recognition decisions are made. The present experiments were designed to leverage this novel methodological approach by soliciting free-response justifications of judgments of learning (JOLs) whereby people not only assess the probability with which they will later recognize individual items but also (for some items) justify the reasoning behind their judgment. Across all experiments and conditions, regression models trained on justification language showed above-chance prediction of subsequent memory success and outperformed models trained …

Modernist Amateur Economists: Heterodox Economic Theory And British Literary Modernism, Samuel Smith Aug 2021

Modernist Amateur Economists: Heterodox Economic Theory And British Literary Modernism, Samuel Smith

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In Modernist Amateur Economists: Heterodox Economic Theory and British Literary Modernism, I argue that a range of British writers of literary modernism responded to a moment of institutional and economic instability by engaging with heterodox economic theories in their literary works. Paying close attention to the institutional history of the academic disciplines of Literary Studies and Economics and to the state of heterodox economic theorization in the first half of the twentieth century, I assemble a group of writers I term “Modernist Amateur Economists,” who rejected the tendency of professional economists to abstract economic questions from broader cultural contexts. In …
