Get My Syntax On, Heidi Lei
Get My Syntax On, Heidi Lei
Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity
In this paper, I describe and analyze an instance of micro-syntactic variation in American English, a construction I refer to as get my X on. There is considerable flexibility in the construction, involving the types of determiners allowed, the phrasal verbs used, and most notably, the structure of the DP my X. In Standard American English, the X following a possessive pronoun is generally restricted to nouns. However, in this construction, X can be a lexical verb like sing, teach, or even celebrate. Some speakers of African American English accept only the bare verb, rejecting …

Swimming Upstream: Getting To The Root Causes Of Infant Mortality And Life Expectancy Outcomes In Cleveland, Ohio And The U.S., Richey Piiparinen, Joshua Valdez
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Health mostly happens outside of the hospital and the doctor’s office. This reality is called “the social determinants of health” (SDOH). SDOH’s impact can be understood a number of ways. This analysis shows that great local healthcare doesn’t preclude poor population health, exhibited by high infant mortality and low life expectancy rates.
The analysis found that while Ohio and Cuyahoga County have world-class healthcare, they also have third-world health outcomes.
• Ohio’s life expectancy (76.8) ranks 12th worst nationally, well below Midwestern peers. Cuyahoga County’s life expectancy (77) ranks 41st out of 89 counties in the State.
• Black Cuyahoga …

Critical Interviewing, Laila L. Hlass, Lindsay M. Harris
Critical Interviewing, Laila L. Hlass, Lindsay M. Harris
Utah Law Review
Critical lawyering—also at times called rebellious, community, and movement lawyering—attempts to further social justice alongside impacted communities. While much has been written about the contours of this form of lawyering and case examples illustrating core principles, little has been written about the mechanics of teaching critical lawyering skills. This Article seeks to expand critical lawyering theory, and in doing so, provide an example of a pedagogical approach to teaching what we term “critical interviewing.” Critical interviewing means using an intersectional lens to collaborate with clients, communities, interviewing partners, and interpreters in a legal interview. Critical interviewers identify and take into …
Retention Of Nursing Assistants In Assisted Living Using Stay Interviews: A Qualitative Case Study, Daphne H. Dominguez
Retention Of Nursing Assistants In Assisted Living Using Stay Interviews: A Qualitative Case Study, Daphne H. Dominguez
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The expectation of the impact of an aging population and the future availability of nursing staff is a significant challenge for senior living communities around the world. Lack of nursing staff retention has driven managers to hire quickly, denying residents living in long-term care communities the care they need. Exploratory, qualitative design, using case study research, was used for this study to learn what motivates resident care attendants (RCAs) to stay employed in assisted living communities of senior living. Richard Finnegan’s five stay interview questions were used to interview nine RCAs from various assisted living communities in Louisiana. The data …

Examining Teachers Perceptions Of Inclusive Practices In Secondary Education, Jill A. Phillips
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The aim of this literature review is to examine inclusive education in the mainstream secondary education classroom, namely how participation in training, support, and attitudes and perceptions influence the success of inclusive education. Several articles were reviewed that researched inclusive education to determine the opinions of teachers who have implemented inclusive education into the mainstream secondary classroom and whether or not support and training influenced the success of inclusion. Teachers’ perceptions on inclusive education are important to investigate. This will determine where teachers’ perceptions and attitudes towards and knowledge of inclusive education as well as principals’ support and expectations of …

Against All Odds: Understanding African American Males’ Perspectives On The Path To Graduation At An Alternative School, Devin Randolph
Theses and Dissertations
The researcher completed a critical, descriptive, single case study about African American male students' experiences on the path to graduation at an alternative school in the southeast. Informed by scholarship on majoritarian narratives and counter narratives from Critical Race Theory (CRT), the researcher coded and analyzed data from individual interviews, a focus group, and an art-based project to answer three research questions: 1. How do African American males describe their perspectives on their placement at an alternative school? 2. How do African American male students describe their paths to graduation, including defining moments? 3. What and who do African American …

Our collective aim in this essay is to critically examine the fakafelavai intersection, or fakahoko connection and fakamāvae separation, of the vaka boat, fale house, and kava in terms of both art work and art use. The vaka boat and fale house are associated with tufunga the material arts of tufunga fo‘uvaka boat-building and tufunga langafale house-building, and kava with faiva the performance art of faiva inukava kava-drinking; all bearing immense material–physical, psychological–emotional, and social–cultural significance. All three are variously associated with the ceremonial as tapu structures and places possessing mana power and ivi energy of great potupotutatau harmony and …

Antiracist Praxis In The Adult English Classroom, Cydnee Sanders
Antiracist Praxis In The Adult English Classroom, Cydnee Sanders
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The research question for this capstone was: How can educators of adult English learners utilize antiracist praxis like translanguaging to more deeply value learners’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds and experiences? As the field of teaching English to adults grows, educators need to be aware of the colonial history of English learning that is harmful to learners (Motha, 2014). Through colonizing ideologies of monolingualism and standardization, adult learners of English constantly get messages of inferiority towards their linguistic and cultural identities. As educators, it is our responsibility to combat these racist practices in our classroom and community with antiracist praxis. Kendi …
Instructional Support For Vocational Esl Teachers, Amy Zoerb
Instructional Support For Vocational Esl Teachers, Amy Zoerb
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Workplace/Occupational/Vocational ESL (VESL) is a growing approach within English for Specific Purposes (ESP), fueled by national initiatives such as the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), and Integrated Education and Training (IET) among others. However, teacher training and support is often lacking for ESL teachers within these areas. This led to the research question, how can instructional support be provided to teachers of adult learners in Vocational ESL (VESL) programs? The creation of a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) for VESL instructors was developed in response to this question, which is collected into a facilitator guide. The Faculty Learning Community is …
Exploring The Effect Of Cultural And Linguistic Features On The Academic Writing Of College-Level English Learners, Abdullahi Soyan
Exploring The Effect Of Cultural And Linguistic Features On The Academic Writing Of College-Level English Learners, Abdullahi Soyan
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone project explores the research question: “What factors contribute to the struggle of nonnative writers with academic writing in English? Knowledge of North American writing conventions is essential in U.S. colleges and universities. College students who are native speakers of the English language are familiar with these conventions from elementary education. However, international or English Learners (ELs) do not have enough exposure to these conventions as they enroll and attend colleges and universities in the U.S. These ELs struggle in academic writing classes with issues beyond grammar and syntactic structure. This struggle is partially attributable to cultural and linguistic …

Muslim Parents’ Expectations In The Public High School Education System, Tamer Hamid
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The research question addressed in this capstone project is, what are the expectations of some Muslim parents of high-school-age students. These expectations include prayer, Ramadan, observation of Islamic holidays, school schedule, school meals, school curriculum, gender separation in physical education classes, and teacher insensitivity. In a humble effort to set my fellow educators up for success and expand their knowledge base, a professional development plan is designed as a source that would mainly include high school administrators, teachers, staff members, community members, and anyone invested in the welfare and success of a school with any number of high school Muslim …

Research has shown that implementing peer review and feedback in a middle school ELL classroom can improve students’ writing skills. This capstone helps to answer the research question, How can I integrate peer review and feedback activities into instruction in order to improve the writing skills of middle school English language learners? This capstone project provides a curriculum unit that scaffolds lessons and activities in a …
An Investigation Of The Best Practices To Develop Oral Proficiency In Adult English Learners That Are Engaging And Minimize Anxiety, Caroline Cherry
An Investigation Of The Best Practices To Develop Oral Proficiency In Adult English Learners That Are Engaging And Minimize Anxiety, Caroline Cherry
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Oral language proficiency requires more than simply knowing a language’s linguistic structure; learners must be able to quickly retrieve the relevant information to speak in a comparatively short amount of time. Speaking is the most fundamental language skill, and according to many researchers, the most complex as well, especially for adult learners. While many, perhaps most, adult ESL students rate the ability to speak fluently as the primary reason they are in class, practicing the skill can invoke considerable anxiety, which may stall or block learning. Reticence to speak typically results from anxiety, low self-confidence, or cultural expectations that discourage …
Project Based Learning As A Teaching And Learning Method For Middle School Ells, Chandreyee Basu Thakur
Project Based Learning As A Teaching And Learning Method For Middle School Ells, Chandreyee Basu Thakur
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The rise in immigration to the United States in recent years has led to an increase in linguistic and racial diversity in schools. As a result, students with lower levels of English proficiency are often neglected in the classroom. I learned in my studies at Hamline University that the result of this is what Gloria Ladson-Billings (2006) calls the “opportunity gap.” Teaching in India for many years, I incorporated various projects to make content comprehensible. Project based learning increases participation and understanding. Through my capstone project, I wanted to create the possibility of a more active learning environment for my …

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In The Online Elementary Classroom, Kelsey Iverson
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) is a critical component of ensuring equity and contributes to creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive learning environment for all students (Ladson-Billings, 1995). With the increase of students of color entering the online learning sphere (U.S. Department of Education, 2021), it is critical that teachers are equipped with knowledge of best practices in CRP practices. Additionally, with the increase in creation of elementary online learning programs throughout the country, it is important that teachers are equipped with knowledge of best practices for online teaching and learning. The research question addressed in this capstone project is: How …
Translanguaging Writing Strategies For The High School Classroom And Low-Level Literacy El Students, Lisa Kebort
Translanguaging Writing Strategies For The High School Classroom And Low-Level Literacy El Students, Lisa Kebort
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Translanguaging has been shown to be a successful strategy to support high school EL students in accessing content knowledge, prior knowledge, and preserving a student’s cultural identity. Many emergent bilingual students struggle to access content due to low-level literacy in their first language, and the high content demands of high school. This is especially true when it comes to writing in English. Using translanguaging writing strategies, such as pre-writing in the student’s L1, discussion in L1, and translated texts, allows students to showcase what they know and meet standards. This capstone project resulted in a Canvas Course for high school …
The Power Of Translanguaging In American Schools, Tasneem Rattansi
The Power Of Translanguaging In American Schools, Tasneem Rattansi
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The concept of teaching English as a second language or multilingualism is something that the country has grappled with since the time of colonization. As we have become more aware of the globalization in our world, it has become quite evident that the basis of many of the theories and research conducted has a level of monolingual bias and is geared towards a system that is more fitting to what is known as monolingual norms. As more understanding is gained, the American education system is learning about translanguaging, an asset-based concept that is a heteroglossic ideology holding bilingualism to high …

The Power Of Language And Its Integral Role In Lgbtq+ Inclusion In Education, Jay Carr
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Abstract
Carr, J. (2021). The Power of Language and Its Integral Role in LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Education Language plays a central role in our daily lives; it is through language that we name, identify, and differentiate everyone and everything in our world. It is through language that dominant, heteronormative discourses have been established surrounding gender and sexuality. Heteronormativity positions heterosexual and cisgender (identifying with the sex / gender assigned at birth) identities as normal and natural, while excluding and oppressing LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer / questioning, + other non-conforming identities) individuals. Despite a heavy push for ‘diversity’ and …

Adult Educator Views On Impact And Learner Fit In Integrated Digital English Acceleration (I-Dea) Classrooms, Peter Gray
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The Integrated Digital English Acceleration (I-DEA) teaching method uses a Flipped Classroom (FC) design to fast-track the English Language Acquisition (ELA) and digital literacy skills development of adults enrolled at Community and Technical Colleges (CTCs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in the United States. I-DEA projects and programs are in various stages of implementation throughout the U.S., but few accounts of the method’s impact on teaching and learning and fit for adult English language learners (ELLs) have been published. I-DEA is a “flipped” (blended) instructional delivery method for Adult Basic Education (ABE). Evaluation of its impact and fit contributes to the …

Cortical Thickness Related To Compensatory Viewing Strategies In Patients With Macular Degeneration, Tina Plank, Edith M.A. Benkowitsch, Anton L. Beer, Sabine Brandl, Maka Malania, Sebastian M. Frank, Herbert Jägle, Mark W. Greenlee
Dartmouth Scholarship
Retinal diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or hereditary juvenile macular dystrophies (JMD) lead to a loss of central vision. Many patients compensate for this loss with a pseudo fovea in the intact peripheral retina, the so-called “preferred retinal locus” (PRL). How extensive eccentric viewing associated with central vision loss (CVL) affects brain structures responsible for visual perception and visually guided eye movements remains unknown. CVL results in a reduction of cortical gray matter in the “lesion projection zone” (LPZ) in early visual cortex, but the thickness of primary visual cortex appears to be largely preserved for eccentric-field representations. Here …

Called By Beauty: Paul Ricoeur’S (Late) Liturgical Turn, Daniel O'Dea Bradley
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
We are now witnessing a great renewal of philosophical interest in the material aspects of religiosity. In this article I show that we have resources for this work in the very late philosophy of Paul Ricoeur, resources that are equally unexpected and deeply moving. In particular, in Ricoeur’s late turn we see the promising beginnings of a sacramental philosophy that links Baptism and the Song of Songs to show how liturgical practice is fundamentally tied to the beauty and sacredness of the natural world. The result is the realization that an ethics of hope is only truly completed in a …
