Skill Downgrading Among Refugees And Economic Immigrants In Germany: Evidence From The Syrian Refugee Crisis, Plamen Nikolov, Leila Salarpour, David Titus

Economics Faculty Scholarship

Upon arrival to a new country, many immigrants face job downgrading, a phenomenon describing workers being in jobs below the ones they have based on the skills they possess. Moreover, in the presence of downgrading immigrants receiving lower wage returns to the same skills compared to natives. The level of downgrading could depend on the immigrant type and numerous other factors. This study examines the determinants of skill downgrading among two types of immigrants – refugees and economic immigrants – in the German labor markets between 1984 and 2018. We find that refugees downgrade more than economic immigrants, and this …

Wireless Transmissions: Early Russian Radio And Modernist Poetics, Ana Berdinskikh Oct 2021

Wireless Transmissions: Early Russian Radio And Modernist Poetics, Ana Berdinskikh

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines the first era of mass wireless communication in Russia, and the ways in which emerging media technologies shaped and intersected with cultural production in the early twentieth century. In this project, I study a series of authors and artists who participated in a growing technological discourse, as they wrote, debated and conceived of methods to achieve “direct” and “instantaneous” communication that exceeded the capabilities of written text. Through their poems, fiction, lithographs and collages, these artists explored the role that wireless telegraphy and radio played in shaping conceptions of spatial and temporal limitations, and how these devices …

Toward A Media-Technological Approach To Films: Meaning-Making, Objects, And Procedures, Ido Lewit Oct 2021

Toward A Media-Technological Approach To Films: Meaning-Making, Objects, And Procedures, Ido Lewit

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Film is a technological medium, and as one which is also mimetic, it often includes other technologies and media among its representations. The dissertation focuses on the intermedial encounter that occurs when film hosts other media and argues that the hosted media have the potential to inflect modes of expression and determine discourse and meaning in films that incorporate them. For the purpose of studying the intermedial encounter as a generator of discourse, the dissertation concentrates on the operation of technologies and media as they are remediated through the medium of the moving image. Within the intermedial encounter the specific operations …

Making And Debating Empires In South Asia And The Global British Empire, 1756-1799, Tiraana Bains Oct 2021

Making And Debating Empires In South Asia And The Global British Empire, 1756-1799, Tiraana Bains

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Why did a strong centralizing British imperial state emerge in South Asia in the eighteenth century? The partial loss of the British Empire in North America, the ferment of partisan politics in Britain and the rise of powerful regional South Asian states during this period amply demonstrate that such a transformation was not inevitable. This dissertation argues that continuous and multi-sited contestation drove British imperial state-building in South Asia. The formation of a centralizing British imperial state in South Asia was not only violent and coercive but, akin to the concurrent emergence of the United States of America and revolutionary …

The Politics Of Play: Digital Youth, New Media, And Social Movement In Contemporary Vietnam, Tri Phuong Oct 2021

The Politics Of Play: Digital Youth, New Media, And Social Movement In Contemporary Vietnam, Tri Phuong

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Abstract The Politics of Play:Digital Youth, New Media, and Social Movement in Contemporary Vietnam Tri Mac Phuong 2021 This dissertation examines the role of media and the mediascape of contemporary Vietnam some 40 years after national reunification as provocation, palimpsest, and portent to a number of citizen-subject formations, sociopolitical negotiations, and cultural upheavals. In particular, I look at how the Internet and related digital technologies influence urban youth’s civic life, communal ties, and social imaginations, and how these so-called new media intersect and interact with older forms of media at particular conjunctures to produce new values, beliefs, habits, functions, and …

Conjuring People: Pasolini’S Specters And The Global South, Alessandro Brunazzo Oct 2021

Conjuring People: Pasolini’S Specters And The Global South, Alessandro Brunazzo

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Pier Paolo Pasolini’s encounter with the Global South is probably one of the most challenging and fascinating aspects of his long-standing legacy. It is not surprising that, along with studies focusing on the potentialities of his approach to the “Southern Question” as well as the decolonization process, scholars have also criticized his romanticizing and orientalist representations of Third World countries. However, only a small amount of work has been devoted to how filmmakers from the Global South have engaged with Pasolini. Analyzing the points of contact between the Italian director and Global South filmmakers can shed new light not only on …

Making Connections: Marketing Ideas For Interpreters, Steve Mcdermott Oct 2021

Making Connections: Marketing Ideas For Interpreters, Steve Mcdermott

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

There is a need for skilled interpreters to meet the needs of the increasingly diverse communities. Many get into the field of interpretation and translation in order to assist those with language barriers, as well as earn a living for themselves. The interpreters get into the field not realizing that to succeed they also need an entrepreneurial spirit. These entrepreneurial linguists are classified as independent contractors, as such they are responsible for the business aspects of their livelihood. This includes marketing themselves in order to grow their client base. Marketing can be a daunting task in itself. In speaking with …

Teaching Multicultural Literature In The College Classroom, Jordan K. Fleming Oct 2021

Teaching Multicultural Literature In The College Classroom, Jordan K. Fleming

Selected Honors Theses

Due to a lack of research on the topic and events of 2020, this thesis aims to learn how professors teach multicultural literature to traditional undergraduate students and how students respond to these courses. I focus on pedagogical scholarship that notes the structure, challenges, and impact of teaching this genre in K-12 and higher education classrooms. My conclusions provide educators with a repertoire of teaching strategies, materials, and student feedback to help students critically respond to living in a multicultural nation and world. These conclusions also lessen a gap in research, as there is significantly less published information on teaching …

Uncovering The Model Minority Narrative: A Case Study On Asian American Students In High-Achieving Schools, Joanne Choi Oct 2021

Uncovering The Model Minority Narrative: A Case Study On Asian American Students In High-Achieving Schools, Joanne Choi

NERA Conference Proceedings 2021

Asian American students in high-achieving secondary schools often have unique cultural experiences, perspectives, and challenges due to the perpetuation of the “Model Minority” conceptualization coined by sociologist William Peterson. Guided by the theoretical frameworks of Critical Race Theory and Culturally Responsive Teaching from the existing literature by theorists such as Ladson-Billings, Gay, and Paris, my research attempts to devise potential methods for secondary educators to make their classrooms more culturally responsive, address Asian American students' deficits or educational challenges, and eliminate harmful biases.

Framing Strikes: A Case Study Of Media Depictions Of Two Teacher Strikes, Jamie Gillespie Oct 2021

Framing Strikes: A Case Study Of Media Depictions Of Two Teacher Strikes, Jamie Gillespie

NERA Conference Proceedings 2021

In this study, I examined the media framing of teachers strikes in Chicago in 2012 and in Seattle in 2015 by analyzing depictions of the people, issues, and events involved in the months before, during, and after the strikes in local media outlets. My findings indicate that the overwhelmingly negative coverage of teachers and their union in Chicago may have impacted the less successful negotiations outcomes, while the mostly positive coverage of teachers and their union in Seattle may have played a role in the more successful negotiated agreement between teachers and the school district.

A Curriculum Model For Multidisciplinary Training Of Midwife Sonographers In A Low Resource Setting, Sudhir Vinayak, Marleen Temmerman, Geert Villeirs, Sharon M. Brownie

Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa

In many low-resource settings, less than 5% of pregnant women can access ultrasound during pregnancy. Thus, gestational age is often difficult to determine, multiple pregnancies are diagnosed late and foetal and pregnancy-related anomalies can go undetected. A pilot solution was designed beyond the traditional approach of increasing numbers of qualified radiologists, gynaecologists and sonographers. An innovative Human Resource for Health (HRH) task sharing, and maternal child health (MCH) workforce training and capacity building initiative was designed, involving development and testing of a curriculum to train midwife sonographers via a teleradiology innovation platform and a partnership between specialist radiologists, sonographers and …

Disentangling Hate In Online Memes, Ka Wei, Roy Lee, Rui Cao, Ziqing Fan, Jing Jiang, Wen Haw Chong Oct 2021

Disentangling Hate In Online Memes, Ka Wei, Roy Lee, Rui Cao, Ziqing Fan, Jing Jiang, Wen Haw Chong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hateful and offensive content detection has been extensively explored in a single modality such as text. However, such toxic information could also be communicated via multimodal content such as online memes. Therefore, detecting multimodal hateful content has recently garnered much attention in academic and industry research communities. This paper aims to contribute to this emerging research topic by proposing DisMultiHate, which is a novel framework that performed the classification of multimodal hateful content. Specifically, DisMultiHate is designed to disentangle target entities in multimodal memes to improve the hateful content classification and explainability. We conduct extensive experiments on two publicly available …
