Building A Capital Asset Pricing Model Adjusted For Assets’ Pandemic Resilience, William Bruce Apr 2021

Building A Capital Asset Pricing Model Adjusted For Assets’ Pandemic Resilience, William Bruce

Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection

This paper investigates the capabilities of producing a Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) that incorporates pandemic risk and evaluating this model at different stages of the pandemic. However, there is no current investor base for pandemic resilient investing, making the additional weighted component of industries’ pandemic resilience ill-plausible. By building the traditional CAPM and evaluating mean-variance efficient frontiers for 10 assets of varying pandemic resilience, 5 assets of low resilience, and 5 assets of high resilience, I establish that, in the absence of a pandemic resilient CAPM, the most optimal portfolios require diversification across as many assets as possible, regardless …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

To generate physiologically-relevant experimental models, the study of enteric diarrheal diseases is turning increasingly to advanced in vitro models that combine ex vivo, stem cell-derived "organoid" cell lines with bioengineered culture environments that expose them to mechanical stimuli, such as fluid flow. However, such approaches require considerable technical expertise with both microfabrication and organoid culture, and are, therefore, inaccessible to many researchers. For this reason, we have developed a perfusion system that is simple to fabricate, operate, and maintain. Its dimensions approximate the volume and cell culture area of traditional 96-well plates and allow the incorporation of fastidious primary, stem …

Quarantine, Isolation, And Metaphorical Takings: Balancing Individual Rights And Public Health Responses To Disease Outbreaks, Thomas Williams Apr 2021

Quarantine, Isolation, And Metaphorical Takings: Balancing Individual Rights And Public Health Responses To Disease Outbreaks, Thomas Williams

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Quarantine and isolation are methods employed by public health officials to control the spread of dangerous disease pathogens through physical isolation of those exposed or symptomatic. While use of these methods has declined in the last century through advances in medical knowledge and treatment, emerging disease threats will likely require increased reliance on them. Despite this, quarantine statutes and related regulations fail to provide compensation to those subject to them, and little recourse exists to make those individuals whole for losses incurred, though the pandemic has highlighted a need for work in this area. One means of shifting the burden …

A Closer Look Into American Humanitarian Intervention: How Understanding Humanity Tells Who And When We Help, Katie Noble 21

Honor Scholar Theses

I will focus on the United States and their motivation to aid humanitarian crises through three case studies. To realize how the United States is motivated to help, humanity’s predispositions must be well-defined, alongside their established geopolitical interests. It is easy to feel empathy for loved ones or family members, but how does empathy translate with someone in a foreign country? At our core, humans seek interaction and cooperation among others. Who and how they decide to cooperate with defines the intervention strategies. If we can understand how the individual selects their in-group, these tendencies will reflect at the state …
