Primary Care Providers’ Comfort With Utilization Of Genetics In Practice, Taylor Mackenzie Kupneski

Theses and Dissertations

Primary care providers (PCPs) are often the first opportunity for individuals at risk for a genetic condition to be identified and they must care for patients with known genetic conditions. However, PCPs lag behind other providers in incorporating genetics into their practice. This study aimed to understand which genetics related concepts/topics PCPs (1) find relevant to practice, (2) are currently comfortable utilizing in practice, and (3) desire further education on. A mixed methods survey was sent to internists, family medicine providers, OBGYNs, pediatricians and geriatrics providers in South Carolina via email to assess this information. This included physicians, nurse practitioners, …

A Spatial Risk Prediction Model For Drug Overdose, Parisa Bozorgi Apr 2021

A Spatial Risk Prediction Model For Drug Overdose, Parisa Bozorgi

Theses and Dissertations

Drug overdose is a leading cause of unintentional death in the United States and has contributed significantly to a decline in life expectancy from 2015 to 2018. Overdose deaths, especially from opioids, have also been recognized in recent years as a significant public health issue. To address this public health problem, this study sought to identify neighborhood-level (e.g., block group) factors associated with drug overdose and develop a spatial model using machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict the likelihood or risk of drug overdoses across South Carolina. This study included block group level socio-demographic factors and drug use variables which …

Making The Comeback From Combat: An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Occupational Therapy For Combat Veterans, Julia A. Hickey

Honors Theses

Combat veterans have been found to experience difficulties with community reintegration after coming back from their deployments. Many of them experience physical and mental injuries from their deployment, such as mild traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and amputations. Combat veterans not having effective treatment for these injuries can contribute to issues with community reintegration. These issues can consist of marital and financial problems, problems with alcohol or substance abuse, homelessness, and motor vehicle accidents. The Department of Veterans Affairs and the United States military have put forth efforts with improving community reintegration for combat veterans; one of those efforts …

The Effects Of Patient-Physician Interaction Time On Overall Visit Satisfaction And Prevention Of Physician Burnout, Miranda Sheridan Apr 2021

The Effects Of Patient-Physician Interaction Time On Overall Visit Satisfaction And Prevention Of Physician Burnout, Miranda Sheridan

Senior Honors Theses

With an increasingly commercialized healthcare setting, today’s physicians are often forced to reduce their patient examination times drastically. There has also been a greater shift in the administration of primary care to allied health professionals such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners. However, these changes may not be sustainable in the long-term. This study investigates the relationship between time spent with a physician (M.D. or D.O.) during an examination and overall patient satisfaction. Moreover, mental health concerns, namely burnout, have become more prevalent among physicians. Studying this under the lens of accelerated modern medicine could help shed light on strategies …

Weathering The Pandemic: Dying Old At A Young Age From Pre-Existing Racist Conditions, Arline T. Geronimus Apr 2021

Weathering The Pandemic: Dying Old At A Young Age From Pre-Existing Racist Conditions, Arline T. Geronimus

Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice

Mainstream social epidemiology now acknowledges the contributions of interpersonal racism, racialized stress, and implicit bias to population health inequity. It also increasingly recognizes that current and historical racist policies place barriers in the way of healthy lifestyles by institutionalizing food deserts, housing decay, and austerity urbanism. Essential as these developments are, they only skim the surface of how insidiously structural racism establishes and reproduces population health inequity. I coined the term “weathering” to describe the effects of sustained cultural oppression upon the body. Weathering expands on the more conventional “social determinants of health” approach to understand the contextually fluctuating and …

Empathy’S Promise And Limits For Those Disproportionately Harmed By The Covid-19 Pandemic, Theresa Glennon Apr 2021

Empathy’S Promise And Limits For Those Disproportionately Harmed By The Covid-19 Pandemic, Theresa Glennon

Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice

Structural race, ethnicity, and class disparities in the United States concentrated and intensified the health, economic, and psychological impact of COVID-19 for certain populations. Those same structural disparities and the belief system that maintains them may also account for the weak policy response that left the United States with high rates of infection and death, economic devastation of individuals, families, and small businesses, and psychological distress. A more equal society with a stronger pre-pandemic safety net may have prevented or eased the disproportionate hardship and avoided the drama and cliffhanging. Or the shock of a pandemic and likelihood of extreme …

B-Cell-Intrinsic Mhcii Signaling Shapes Microbiota Composition, Sergei Alexeev Apr 2021

B-Cell-Intrinsic Mhcii Signaling Shapes Microbiota Composition, Sergei Alexeev

Senior Theses

Recent studies demonstrate that immunoglobulin A (IgA) is critical for limiting chronic inflammation, but the mechanism by which this occurs is undefined. Regulation of the composition of the commensal bacterial community in the gut (i.e. the microbiota) could be one mechanism. IgA can be produced through T-cell-dependent (TD) and T-cell-independent (TiD) pathways. While TiD IgA is the most abundant IgA secreted into the gut, the relative contribution of TD and TiD IgA in regulating microbiota composition is controversial. Antigen presentation by B cells to T cells is essential for TD responses, and this is carried out by MHC class II …

Limitations And Consequences Of Migrant And Refugee Healthcare- An Analysis Of The Current State Of Migrant Health, Meghan Herilla

Senior Theses

Migrants and refugees are an often-neglected specialized population in the field of healthcare, although making up over 14% of the world’s population.

The following paper examines the current state of migrant healthcare, including but not limited to ease of access, quality of care, and the accompanying stigmatization of immigrants in general. It then analyzes current policies, both national and global, influencing the healthcare of immigrants in both the United States and abroad. Finally, a comparison of migrant healthcare in the United States versus Thailand shows how the current U.S. healthcare system can be improved to better accommodate migrants and refugees. …

The Demographics Of Death: An Early Look At Covid-19, Cultural And Racial Bias In America, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Lawrence J. Trautman Apr 2021

The Demographics Of Death: An Early Look At Covid-19, Cultural And Racial Bias In America, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Lawrence J. Trautman

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

During late 2019, reports emerged that a mysterious coronavirus was resulting in high contagion and many deaths in Wuhan, China. In just a few weeks, cases rose quickly in Seattle, spread to California, and the first in- stance of the virus appeared in New York (from Iran) on March 1, 2020. As the months pass, it is abundantly clear that less wealthy Americans have far fewer options amid the new normal of shelter-in-place orders, school closings, and shuttered businesses. For example, the poor and other populations may be genetically pre-disposed to heart disease and diabetic issues, but poverty also dictates …

Does Gender Climate Influence Climate Change? The Multidimensionality Of Gender Equality And Its Countervailing Effects On The Carbon Intensity Of Well-Being, Christina Ergas, Patrick Trent Greiner, Julius Alexander Mcgee, Matthew Thomas Clement Apr 2021

Does Gender Climate Influence Climate Change? The Multidimensionality Of Gender Equality And Its Countervailing Effects On The Carbon Intensity Of Well-Being, Christina Ergas, Patrick Trent Greiner, Julius Alexander Mcgee, Matthew Thomas Clement

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The carbon intensity of well-being (CIWB) (a ratio measuring the amount of CO2 emitted per unit of life expectancy at birth) is an increasingly popular way to measure the ecological efficiency of nations. Although research demonstrates that economic development typically reduces this efficiency, little research has explored the extent to which social equality improves it. This study uses panel data for 70 nations between 1995 and 2013 to assess how various aspects of gender equality affect the ecological efficiency of nations. We estimate a series of Prais-Winsten regression models with panel-corrected standard errors (PCSE) to assess how increases in …

Prep Education Intervention, Kristina Jung Msn, Fnp-Bc Apr 2021

Prep Education Intervention, Kristina Jung Msn, Fnp-Bc

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: The nation’s HIV infection rate is alarming, yet only a small percentage of eligible individuals are prescribed pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This sluggish PrEP uptake may be related to lack of knowledge among non-HIV specialist providers. Thus, interventions toexpand providers’ use of PrEP as an HIV prevention strategy are needed.

Objectives: The project aim was to develop an intervention to improve retail nurse practitioners’ (NP) knowledge for PrEP clinical practice, comfort screening for “at-risk HIV” patients, confidence prescribing PrEP, and likeliness to prescribe PrEP in the next six months.

Methodology: An online PrEP tutorial was implemented for retail clinic NPs. …

Use Of Imaging Flow Cytometry To Assess The Hematology Of Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes (Sistrurus Catenatus), Jennifer H. Kovach

Masters Theses

The federally threatened eastern massasauga rattlesnake is faced with many threats, including the newly recognized snake fungal disease. Unfortunately, the immune response to the disease is unknown. Leukocyte profiles are used as health assessment tools for many species, and imaging flow cytometry can be used as an application to characterize leukocyte profiles. Our goal was to use imaging flow cytometry to identify leukocyte profiles of eastern massasauga rattlesnakes and determine differences in profiles between sexes, reproductive status, ages, location, and individuals with clinical signs of snake fungal disease. Blood samples from 201 individuals were collected from ten locations throughout the …
