Politics Of Plague: Ancient Epidemics And Their Impact On Society, Natasha Stange Apr 2021

Politics Of Plague: Ancient Epidemics And Their Impact On Society, Natasha Stange

2021 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

My paper, “Politics of Plague: Ancient Epidemics and Their Impact on Society,” examines the four major plagues that wrought immense destruction across the ancient Mediterranean world: the Plague of Athens (430 BCE), the Antonine Plague (165 CE), the Plague of Cyprian (250 CE), and the Justinianic Plague (541 CE). These epidemics impelled governments to fracture and rebuild, induced the rise and fall of different religions and religious practices, altered military strategies and outcomes, and forced ancient societies to re-examine their structures, values, and inequalities. Such extreme mortalities profoundly impacted each affected society, triggering severe social, political, economic, religious, and military …

Three Essays On Political Responses To Opioid Use In The United States, Lilla Orr Apr 2021

Three Essays On Political Responses To Opioid Use In The United States, Lilla Orr

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In the first two decades of the 21st century, opioid use in the United States has grown to unprecedented levels. Approximately half of the U.S. adult population has been prescribed an opioid based pain reliever, 1.7 million people have an opioid use disorder, and nearly 50,000 people die of opioid related overdoses each year. Public attitudes and drug policy have transformed in the wake of this staggering loss of life. These changes are often attributed to the racial, socioeconomic, and geographic profile of those most affected by the overdose and addiction epidemic, as well as the perceived culpability of physicians, …

The Policy Of Substance Abuse In Liberia: Analysis And Recommendations, Yamah Dolo

Community Engagement Student Work

Countries all over the globe are affected by substance abuse. Substance abuse is a traumatic issue that people around the world battle. Substance use has occurred for many years and seems to keep increasing. According to Parekh, “Substance use disorder (SUD) is complex a condition in which there is uncontrolled use of a substance despite harmful consequence.” (Parekh, 2017). Substance abuse has a significant effect on health, an individual’s well-being, families, relationships, and the post-war community. However, with the information on Liberia, little is known about the substance abuse cases. Liberia is a country that has no health, and there …

Effects Of Polyphenols On Periodontitis, Scott Roberts, Noah Sawtelle, Emma Nelson, Marayah Hynes, Joann Moulton

Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters

Pharmacological agents have been used for centuries to treat or cure diseases. Foods, herbs, and extracts can produce similar pharmacological effects, one being polyphenols. This extract in particular exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. One cellular study stated the biofilm forming capacity and viability of periodontitis pathogens can be significantly altered by dietary polyphenols. Each year 2.8 million people in the United States are diagnosed with an antibiotic resistant bacterial or fungal pathogen. Due to the increasing occurrence of antibiotic resistance, importance of finding new molecules capable of expanding treatment modalities is fundamental in maintaining an acceptable standard of care.

Depression Symptoms And Covid-19, Kaylee Armendariz Apr 2021

Depression Symptoms And Covid-19, Kaylee Armendariz

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic presents new challenges in behavioral healthcare. Americans may face anxiety surrounding the virus, economic strain, isolation, and grief, putting them at increased risk for depression symptoms. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project aimed to increase depression screening rates and utilized data from a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to identify population groups at higher risk for depression symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) depression screening tool, a statistical analysis determined if being tested for COVID-19 or testing positive for COVID-19 had an impact on depression symptoms. Additionally, this project …

Ketogenic Diet As A Preventative Measure Or Treatment Option For Osteoarthritistargeting Nfl Athletes As A High-Risk Group, Kelsi J. Smith

Selected Honors Theses

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent joint disease that results from the degradation of articular cartilage, leading to inflammation, pain, and eventual joint failure. At one time, it was thought that OA was only the result of the natural decline experienced in old age; however, various risk factors have now been identified that may contribute to an increased risk for developing OA. Risk factors may include joint loading, altered biomechanics, obesity, and joint injury, to which athletes are exposed at a high rate. NFL athletes are one group of athletes that have continued to show a high prevalence of arthritis in …

Nickel-Fe3 O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles Supported On Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes: Effective Catalyst In Suzuki Cross Coupling Reactions, Sojeong K. Folsom, Destiny J. Ivey, Frank S. Mcnair, Ali R. Siamaki

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Nickel-Fe3 O4 nanoparticles supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Ni-Fe3 O4 /MW-CNTs) were synthesized by mechanical grinding of a sample of nickel salt, Fe3 O4 and MWCNTs using a ball-mill mixer. The preparation method allows for bulk production of Ni-Fe3 O4 nanoparticles at room temperature without the necessity of any solvent or chemical reagent. The nanoparticles prepared by this method exhibit small particles size of 5–8 nm with uniform dispersion of nickel nanoparticles on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The Ni-Fe3 O4 /MWCNTs demonstrated remarkable catalytic activity for Suzuki cross coupling reactions of functionalized aryl halides and phenylboronic acids with …

Crisis, Continuity, And Change In International Investment Law And Arbitration, Valentina Vadi Apr 2021

Crisis, Continuity, And Change In International Investment Law And Arbitration, Valentina Vadi

Michigan Journal of International Law

The dialectic between continuity and change lies at the heart of international law, which seeks to foster peaceful, just, and prosperous relations among nations. International law endeavors to govern the future by applying, in the present, norms that are inherited from the past. Nonetheless, everything flows and in an ever-changing world, some change is needed within the international legal system to ensure its stability especially in time of crisis. Not only can crises constitute means for the development of international law, but they can test, undermine or ultimately buttress the structure of international law. This article explores the connection between …

United States Public Health Resources

In the midst of resurging COVID-19 cases, the second NIH/FDA virtual COVID-19 and Cytokines symposium was held on 1 December 2020, focusing on longitudinal studies of COVID-19 immunity, including long-term consequences, potential associations with autoimmunity and the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

A central and ongoing quest in COVID-19 research is to establish why and how SARS-CoV-2 elicits heterogeneity in disease severity and immunopathology among infected individuals. Hence, much effort has been exerted to understand the cellular basis of SARS-CoV-2-induced immune responses, with the aim of identifying new biomarkers and prognostic tools and developing new therapeutic options. Cytokines emerged …

Surface Transportation Supply Chain Security: Creating A Blueprint For Future Research, Frances Edwards, Joseph Szyliowicz, Dan Goodrich, William Medigovich, Liz Lange, Autumn Anderton

Mineta Transportation Institute

Ninety percent of the world’s trade goods travel by surface transportation, using maritime, road and rail assets. The security of the goods in transit, the infrastructure supporting the movement, and the vehicles, are required to ensure that international commerce proceeds successfully. Much has been written about the surface supply chain itself, but little has focused on the security of these components. This report provides a guide for those wanting an increased understanding of the security issues that supply chain surface transportation systems confront and a blueprint to guide their future research.

A British Health Seeker In Southern California: Beatrice Harraden (1864-1936), Molly Mcclain Apr 2021

A British Health Seeker In Southern California: Beatrice Harraden (1864-1936), Molly Mcclain

History: Faculty Scholarship

In the late nineteenth-century, health tourists travelled the globe in search of relief for tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other ailments for which the medical profession had no cure. Some sought the mountain air of the Swiss Alps while others headed to the French and Italian Riviera. A smaller, more eclectic group made their way to San Diego, an up-and-coming tourist destination that promised plenty of sunshine, fresh air, and a mild, dry climate thought to be well-suited to damaged lungs and aching joints. Among them was the best-selling British novelist Beatrice Harraden who wrote several books about Southern California, including …

Though the individual students worked remotely, they were still able to collaborate to create a diverse set of engaging experiences. Each of the 5 groups: 1. Used Adobe XD to gamify their …

Ironing Out Anemia: Assessing The Role Of Marketplace Factors And Government Investment Incentives In Shaping East African Pharmaceutical Markets, Madison M. Bradley Apr 2021

Ironing Out Anemia: Assessing The Role Of Marketplace Factors And Government Investment Incentives In Shaping East African Pharmaceutical Markets, Madison M. Bradley

Senior Theses

Africa suffers from the highest disease burden in the world, with over half of the population lacking regular access to essential medicines (Owoeye, 2014, p.214; Chaudhuri & West, 2015, p.23). Following two decades of reform, the continent has now emerged one of the fastest-growing economic regions, shifting public health focus toward non-communicable diseases (NCDs) (Holt et al., 2015, p.2). Among these NCDs is anemia, which has direct and indirect economic effects as large as 4.05% of GDP (Horton & Ross, 2003, p.51). Encouraged by the rapid growth of liberalized markets, African governments and health officials are now considering local pharmaceutical …

Us Vs. Wales: Comparing And Improving Refugee Health Policy, Payton Ramsey Apr 2021

Us Vs. Wales: Comparing And Improving Refugee Health Policy, Payton Ramsey

Senior Theses

Inadequate strides have been made to bolster the short and long-term health of growing numbers of refugees awaiting resettlement. The United Nations Higher Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), as well as many countries of resettlement, guarantee the right to health as signatories of the UN 1951 Refugee Convention, but in many situations refugee accessibility to healthcare and health resources is limited by time restrictions on benefits, immigration status, and/or financial circumstances.

This thesis provides a synopsis of the historical roots of current policies and legislative frameworks relating to refugee health for Wales and the US. Through the analysis of governmental policy …

Inoculating Title Vii: The “Undue Hardship” Standard And Employer-Mandated Vaccination Policies, Mary-Lauren Miller Apr 2021

Inoculating Title Vii: The “Undue Hardship” Standard And Employer-Mandated Vaccination Policies, Mary-Lauren Miller

Fordham Law Review

The widespread administration of a vaccine is essential to bringing an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. Employers can contribute to this goal by requiring employees to be vaccinated. The ability of employers to impose vaccine mandates is theoretically limited in part by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which requires employers to accommodate religious employees unless doing so would impose an “undue hardship” on the employer. Under the current interpretation of undue hardship, employers typically cannot face legal liability for denying accommodations to employees refusing to receive an employer-mandated vaccine on religious grounds, though some employers may …
