Categories of gender, sex and sexuality have been introduced through colonial processes and institutions. The term Two-Spirit encompasses a broad range of sexual and gender identities of Indigenous peoples across North America and complicates distinctions between gender, sex and sexualities7 . While the term is used by some people to refer to the cultural roles of individuals embodying both female and male spirits, the term has also been used as an umbrella term to describe Indigenous people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, intersex and part of the continuum of non-heterosexual identities. It is important to distinguish …

Low Stress Handling Techniques In Shelter Animals And The Overall Effects On Physiological Parameters, Ashley Swim, Courtney Smart, Amy Staton

2021 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Oral Presentations

Animal shelters tend to be a very stressful environment for dogs as there are many new sounds, smells, and animals. This stress is not only bad for their psychological health and can lead to behavioral issues, but it can also have an impact on their physical health. Stress impacts multiple systems of the body, resulting in increased heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, temperature and even blood glucose levels in dogs. The impact stress has on these systems can lead to a compromised immune system and increases the probabilities of the dog becoming ill. However, by using Fear Free methods, …

Stopping The Progression Of Periodontal Disease With Laser Therapy, Sarah Almukhtar, Autumn Baker, Joann Moulton Apr 2021

Stopping The Progression Of Periodontal Disease With Laser Therapy, Sarah Almukhtar, Autumn Baker, Joann Moulton

Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters

A thorough execution of bacteria is not necessarily achieved by non-surgical periodontal instrumentation alone, so it is likely that optimal healing may not take place. Numerous studies have reported on the uses of laser therapy in conjunction with nonsurgical instrumentation. In periodontal laser therapy, the fiber optic tip is placed at the top of the periodontal pocket to remove the diseased tissue that lines the pocket. This is done with a laser specific for dental hygiene such as; neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser (ND:YAG) laser. When reviewing the literature, it is evident that periodontal pocketing, inflammation, and bacteria cannot be …

Cranberry Extract’S Potential To Reduce Streptococcus Mutans, Eliza Estey, Baylee Flemming, Emma Graves, Julia Hamilton, Courtney E. Vannah Apr 2021

Cranberry Extract’S Potential To Reduce Streptococcus Mutans, Eliza Estey, Baylee Flemming, Emma Graves, Julia Hamilton, Courtney E. Vannah

Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters

Streptococcus mutans is the most prominent cariogenic bacteria in the oral cavity due to strong adhesion properties. Reducing the leading cariogenic bacteria in dental caries is important for the longevity of natural teeth. The anti-adhesion effects from cranberry derivatives could be helpful in reducing the amount of S. mutans. This literature review aims to determine whether cranberry extract based mouth rinse is effective in reduction of the S. mutans bacterial load. Current evidence seems to indicate that cranberry derivatives in mouth rinses can effectively reduce numbers of this specific bacterium in the oral cavity. As a result, cranberry extracts …

Van Gogh, Nature, And Spirituality, Emma Krall Apr 2021

Van Gogh, Nature, And Spirituality, Emma Krall

Art and Art History

I attempt to show how Vincent Van Gogh turned to nature as a tool for him to both understand religion and portray it through his paintings. Finding commonalities between a version of Calvinism that saw God's hand in the smallest piece of the natural world and secular inspiration such as Transcendentalism, Vincent expressed his beliefs in his paintings of nature, in particular the Wheat Field series of paintings and his pictures featuring cypress trees created toward the end of his life. While distancing himself from the traditional ministry of Christianity, Van Gogh used depictions of nature in his art to …

Immune-Metabolic Regulation By The Transsulfuration Pathway, Aileen Heeyeon Lee Apr 2021

Immune-Metabolic Regulation By The Transsulfuration Pathway, Aileen Heeyeon Lee

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Pro-longevity interventions such as caloric restriction (CR) and methionine restriction (MR) can improve metabolic health. However, despite decades of extensive studies, the mechanisms that underlie the benefits of these dietary interventions are still being characterized. Particularly, the effect of these diets on immune cells in mediating their metabolic benefits has been largely unexplored. This work aimed to expand our understanding of how these dietary interventions may regulate immune responses and identify novel immunomodulatory pathways that could be harnessed during inflammatory and metabolic pathologies. In line with other studies in animal models, we identified that the transsulfuration pathway (TSP) was induced in …

Mechanisms Of Resistance Against B Cell Targeting Treatments For Myasthenia Gravis, Ruoyi Jiang Apr 2021

Mechanisms Of Resistance Against B Cell Targeting Treatments For Myasthenia Gravis, Ruoyi Jiang

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder caused by autoantibodies that disrupt neuromuscular transmission by targeting components of neuromuscular junctions, such as the acetylcholine receptor (AChR, 90% of patients) and muscle specific kinase (MuSK, 10% of patients). Treatments that address the underlying causes of MG target the cells responsible for producing these autoantibodies. Two such treatment strategies are predominantly used: (1) surgical resection of the thymus (a reservoir for auto-antigen specific B cells in patients with AChR MG) and (2) systemic therapy targeting subsets of autoantibody-producing B cells. The thymus is a known anatomic reservoir for B cells that …

Developing Tradition: A History Of Intercultural Health Governance In Mexico, 1940-2000, Joshua Mentanko

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This is an intellectual and social history of efforts by the Mexican state to order and transform medical pluralism for developmentalist ends in the highlands of Chiapas state between 1940 and 2000. Focusing on state employees, bilingual and indigenous doctors and midwives, and Mexican and foreign anthropologists, it grounds the emergence of “interculturalidad” – or the project of integrating indigenous traditional medicine into state and non-state health institutions – in a broader history of economic development and modernization and indigenous resistance to and negotiation of capitalist and national integration projects. It shows how efforts to integrate traditional medicine have not …

Discovery Of Host-Microbiota Interactions, Connor Rosen Apr 2021

Discovery Of Host-Microbiota Interactions, Connor Rosen

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The microbiota, comprising the trillions of microorganisms that colonize barrier tissues, exert profound effects on host health and disease. Microbial effects on host physiology have been illuminated by a wealth of sequencing-based approaches that enumerate bacterial species, strains, genes, and products (collectively, “multi-omics” approaches) at different tissue sites and in different human populations. Microbes may influence local physiology at their site of residence, as well as having systemic effects including perturbation of organism-wide metabolism, with wide-ranging consequences. The molecular mechanisms by which microbes mediate both local and systemic effects, however, remain mostly unclear. This is in part due to technological …

Vertebrate Responses Against Arthropod Salivary Proteins And Their Therapeutic Potential, Olayinka Olajiga, Andrés F. Holguin-Rocha, Meagan Rippee-Brooks, Megan Eppler, Shanice L. Harris, Berlin Londono-Renteria

Student Publications

The saliva of hematophagous arthropods contains a group of active proteins to counteract host responses against injury and to facilitate the success of a bloodmeal. These salivary proteins have significant impacts on modulating pathogen transmission, immunogenicity expression, the establishment of infection, and even disease severity. Recent studies have shown that several salivary proteins are immunogenic and antibodies against them may block infection, thereby suggesting potential vaccine candidates. Here, we discuss the most relevant salivary proteins currently studied for their therapeutic potential as vaccine candidates or to control the transmission of human vectorborne pathogens and immune responses against different arthropod salivary …

There is a lack of foucs on how people with disabilities are experiencing COVID-19 vaccination efforts. Addressing this knowledge gap is critical to ensuring that people with disabilities are considered as vaccination efforts progress during the ongoing pandemic and future health crises. Overall, 19% of our sample of people with disabilities reported already being vaccinated, 56% wanted to get vaccinated, 10% were unsure, and 15% did not want to be vaccinated. Rural residents with disabilities reported higher rates of current vaccination, but higher rates of overall hesitancy, and more barriers to vaccination than urban residents with disabilities. Political party affiliation …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Microbial resistance to processing treatments poses a food safety concern, as treatment tolerant pathogens can emerge. Occasional foodborne outbreaks caused by pathogenic Escherichia coli have led to human and economic losses. Therefore, this study screened for the extreme heat resistance (XHR) phenotype as well as one known genetic marker, the locus of heat resistance (LHR), in 4,123 E. coli isolates from diverse meat animals at different processing stages. The prevalences of XHR and LHR among the meat-borne E. coli were found to be 10.3% and 11.4%, respectively, with 19% agreement between the two. Finished meat products showed the highest LHR …

A High-Throughput Approach To Characterizing Arv1 On The Regulation Of Lipid Homeostasis Uncovers A Novel Interaction With Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor, Nicholas Anthony Wachowski

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Acyl-CoA cholesterol acyl transferase related enzyme-2 required for viability 1 (ARV1) was first recognized in Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a study done in 2000 by Tinkelenberg et al. In yeast, the deletion of ARV1 results in numerous defects including abnormal sterol trafficking [1], the reduction of sphingolipid metabolism [2], synthesis of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor [3], ER stress [4], and hypersensitivity of fatty acids leading to lipoapoptosis [5]. Arv1 germline deletion in mice displayed a lean phenotype with increased energy [6]. In humans, ARV1 mutations lead to epileptic encephalopathy [7].

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) consists of simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis …
