A New Age Of Telehealth: Pediatric Speech-Language Pathology Services During The Covid-19 Pandemic And Beyond, Deborah R. Campbell Jun 2021

A New Age Of Telehealth: Pediatric Speech-Language Pathology Services During The Covid-19 Pandemic And Beyond, Deborah R. Campbell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic potentially changed the landscape of how speech-language pathologists provide services. Prior to March 2020, pediatric speech-language therapy provided via telehealth was limited; however, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a worldwide conversion from in-person care to a remote service delivery model. This conversion brought to the fore possible benefits and utility of telehealth use. Yet, clinicians potentially experienced barriers to its use, including the lack of validity and reliability evidence for remote administration of several pediatric assessments. For the viability of remotely delivered speech-language services to continue and evolve in a post-pandemic world, further research is needed to identify …

The Prospect Of Nanoparticle Systems For Modulating Immune Cell Polarization During Central Nervous System Infection, Lee E. Korshoj, Wen Shi, Bin Duan, Tammy Kielian

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) selectively restricts the entry of molecules from peripheral circulation into the central nervous system (CNS) parenchyma. Despite this protective barrier, bacteria and other pathogens can still invade the CNS, often as a consequence of immune deficiencies or complications following neurosurgical procedures. These infections are difficult to treat since many bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, encode a repertoire of virulence factors, can acquire antibiotic resistance, and form biofilm. Additionally, pathogens can leverage virulence factor production to polarize host immune cells towards an anti-inflammatory phenotype, leading to chronic infection. The difficulty of pathogen clearance is magnified by …

On The Road From Phenotypic Plasticity To Stem Cell Therapy., Lorraine Iacovitti

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

In 1981, I published a paper in the first issue of The Journal of Neuroscience with my postdoctoral mentor, Richard Bunge. At that time, the long-standing belief that each neuron expressed only one neurotransmitter, known as Dale's Principle (Dale, 1935), was being hotly debated following a report by French embryologist Nicole Le Douarin showing that neural crest cells destined for one transmitter phenotype could express characteristics of another if transplanted to alternate sites in the developing embryo (Le Douarin, 1980). In the Bunge laboratory, we were able to more directly test the question of phenotypic plasticity in the controlled environment …

Social Determinants Of Health And Care Outcomes Among People With Hiv In The United States, Timothy W. Menza, Lindsay K. Hixson, Lauren E. Lipira, Linda Drach

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

Fewer than 70% of people with HIV (PWH) in the United States have achieved durable viral suppression. To end the HIV epidemic in the United States, clinicians, researchers, and public health practitioners must devise ways to remove barriers to effective HIV treatment. To identify PWH who experience challenges to accessing health care, we created a simple assessment of social determinants of health (SDOH) among PWH and examined the impact of cumulative social and economic disadvantage on key HIV care outcomes.

Understanding The Stigma And Feasibility Of Opening A Safe Injection Facility In Baltimore City: A Qualitative Case Study, Timothy Dupree, Caroline I. Wood, Andrea M. Brace

The Qualitative Report

Supervised injection facilities (SIFs) are medically supervised facilities designed to provide a hygienic environment in which drug users can consume illicit drugs intravenously. SIFs can be cost saving, help to reduce transmission of disease, and decrease drug overdoses. There are no SIFs in the United States. In this study we used a multiple case study design to understand the stigma surrounding the use of a SIF and the feasibility of implementing the drug prevention strategy in Baltimore City by comparing experiences with opening a SIF in Sydney, Australia. We interviewed one healthcare worker at the Sydney SIF and ten community …

The Societal Impacts Of Covid-19 On Asian Americans: Mitigating Mental Health Disparities Stemming From Labels Like The “China Virus”, Elisabeth Dubois, Xiaojun (Jenny) Yuan

Addressing Differential Impacts of COVID-19 in New York State: A Symposium

The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affects socially vulnerable populations, including Asian Americans whereupon a host of disparities have worsened their mental health amid the crisis. In this, disparities arise given that Asian Americans disproportionately hold high-contact essential jobs that place them at greater health risk, Asian-owned businesses are overrepresented in sectors that have been hardest hit by COVID-19, and anti-Asian xenophobia and racism have been exacerbated. This paper seeks to investigate the theory of interactionism as it relates to the nature of the disparities faced by Asian Americans. The COVID-19 pandemic has signified the othering of sub-sections of the population, where …

Social Distancing In The Context Of Covid-19 Anxiety: A Social Cognitive Approach, Allyson S. Graf, Abigail Nehrkorn-Bailey, Amy Knepple Carney

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

As the impact of COVID-19 continues, engagement in social distancing is essential. Using Social Cognitive Theory, the current study examined the unique roles of COVID-19 anxiety and self-efficacy on the relationships between information-seeking and risk perception as predictors of social distancing intention. A convenience sample of 960 adults (M = 37.81 years, SD = 11.65) completed an author-designed online survey. Participants completed measures on behavioral intention, information-seeking, risk perception, COVID-19 anxiety, and self-efficacy. Moderated mediations examined the theoretically proposed relationships among the variables. COVID-19 anxiety moderated the relationship between risk perception and self-efficacy, but not the association between information-seeking …

The trimeric severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein (S) is the sole viral protein responsible for both viral binding to a host cell and the membrane fusion event needed for cell entry. In addition to facilitating fusion needed for viral entry, S can also drive cell-cell fusion, a pathogenic effect observed in the lungs of SARS-CoV-2-infected patients. While several studies have investigated S requirements involved in viral particle entry, examination of S stability and factors involved in S cell-cell fusion remain limited. A furin cleavage site at the border between the S1 and S2 subunits (S1/S2) has …
