Stem cell-derived, organotypic in vitro models, known as organoids, have emerged as superior alternatives to traditional cell culture models due to their unparalleled ability to recreate complex physiological and pathophysiological processes. For this reason, they are attractive targets of tissue-engineering efforts, as constructs that include organoid technology would be expected to better simulate the many functions of the desired tissue or organ. While the 3D spheroidal architecture that is the default architecture of most organoid models may be preferred for some applications, 2D monolayer arrangements remain the preferred organization for many applications in tissue engineering. Therefore, in this work, we …

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol use is a risk factor for non-cardia gastric adenocarcinoma. However, it is less well understood whether alcohol use is a risk factor for premalignant mucosal changes, namely gastric intestinal metaplasia. We examined the association between various parameters of alcohol use and risk of gastric intestinal metaplasia.
METHODS: We used data from 2084 participants (including 403 with gastric intestinal metaplasia) recruited between February 2008-August 2013 into a cross-sectional study at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, Texas. All participants underwent a study upper endoscopy with systematic gastric mapping biopsies. Cases had intestinal metaplasia on …
An Online Museum Of Stories: Literary Travel Writing For Cultural Tourism Development, C Mansfield, J Potočnik Topler
An Online Museum Of Stories: Literary Travel Writing For Cultural Tourism Development, C Mansfield, J Potočnik Topler
Plymouth Business School
With rising tourism interest in cultural heritage, destination management organisations, museums and other cultural institutions are seeking methods of unlocking the intangible cultural heritage of local residents and sharing that before it is lost. This is specific knowledge of the uses and practices of disappearing spaces in towns, of plants and their uses as foodstuffs, and in clothing and of work practices that were more in-tune with local, sustainable production. This contribution outlines new methods for building the ethnographic museum as a museum of stories, and proposes a model that explores narrative through literary travel writing for a new public.

The Ghent Altarpiece After World War Ii: Restitution, Restoration, And Redemption, Jenny Graham
The Ghent Altarpiece After World War Ii: Restitution, Restoration, And Redemption, Jenny Graham
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Few Old Master paintings possess as turbulent an object history as the Ghent altarpiece, now restored, since World War II, to the city’s cathedral for which it was made. While most accounts focus on the longue durée perspective, especially the work’s looting by Napoleon and Hitler, this article examines the altarpiece’s history following its return to Belgium in 1945. The altarpiece was subject to increased sensitivity at home after its wartime wanderings, and a major controversy ensued when the government backed a radical conservation project, which took place under the direction of Paul Coremans at the Royal Museum in Brussels …

Despite widespread use, community-based physical activity prescription is controversial. Data limitations have resulted in a lack of clarity about what works, under what circumstances, and for whom, reflected in conservative policy recommendations. In this commentary we challenge a predominantly negative discourse, using contemporary research to highlight promising findings and “lessons learnt” for design, delivery, and evaluation. In doing so, we argue for the importance of a more nuanced approach to future commissioning and evaluation. Novelty: Amalgamating learning from multiple research teams to create recommendations for advancing physical activity prescription.
Ecotoxicology Of Active Ingredients In Changing Marine Environments, Cameron Hird
Ecotoxicology Of Active Ingredients In Changing Marine Environments, Cameron Hird
School of Biomedical Sciences
Active ingredients (AIs), including pesticides and pharmaceuticals, are designed to have a specific mode-of-action (MoA) in target organisms. Despite this, there is substantial evidence of their occurrence in marine environments having the potential to impact non-target species with effects both as a result of, and independent from, their MoA. Furthermore, due to a large proportion of AIs being readily ionisable, there is growing evidence that their uptake and effects are sensitive to environmental parameters such as pH, which can be driven by changes in pCO2,both in natural cycles and as a consequence of anthropogenic activities. In this thesis I investigate the …

An Intersectional Analytical Critique Of The Troubled Families Programme In Cornwall, Rebecca Carter Dillon
An Intersectional Analytical Critique Of The Troubled Families Programme In Cornwall, Rebecca Carter Dillon
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
An Intersectional Analytical Critique of the Troubled Families Programme in Cornwall This thesis provides an intersectional analytical critique of the Troubled Families (TF) Programme in Cornwall, a county which is amongst the most deprived in Northern Europe (ONS, 2017). The TF Programme was launched in England in 2012 in an effort to ‘turn around’ the lives of ‘troubled’ families, in response to the urban riots of August 2011 (RCVP, 2012). While interim evaluations of the Programme have recognised that many ‘troubled’ families are in income poverty (MHCLG, 2019c), the official TF policy documentation does not acknowledge how ‘troubled’ families’ abilities …

To The Bitter End: Affect, Experience And Chemical Ecology, H Drayson
To The Bitter End: Affect, Experience And Chemical Ecology, H Drayson
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This article explores taste in its chemical, gustemological and affective senses, asking what we speak of when we talk about “bitter experience.” Drawing lines of connection between human affect and chemical ecology, it suggests a way of thinking about taste as a chemical entanglement of affective qualities and ecological relations. Two observations underpin the argument. First, the ambiguous resonance of bitter-tasting compounds in human culture is grounded in their ambiguous medical meaning, the same drug may serve as poison or cure. Second, plants interact with many other life-forms by producing chemical compounds, many of which are bitter tasting, that have …

Hazardous Metal Additives In Plastics And Their Environmental Impacts, Andrew Turner, Montserrat Filella
Hazardous Metal Additives In Plastics And Their Environmental Impacts, Andrew Turner, Montserrat Filella
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Historically, many additives and catalysts used in plastics were based on compounds of toxic metals (and metalloids), like arsenic, cadmium, chromium(VI), and lead. Despite subsequent restrictions, hazardous additives remain in plastics in societal circulation because of the pervasiveness of many products and the more general contamination of recycled goods. However, little is understood about their presence and impacts in the environment, with most studies focusing on the role of plastics in acquiring metals from their surroundings through, for example, adsorption. Accordingly, this paper provides a review of the uses of hazardous, metal-based additives in plastics, the relevant European regulations that …

Effect Of Methionine Feeding On Oxidative Stress, Intracellular Calcium And Contractility In Cardiomyocytes Isolated From Male And Female Rats, Shatha A. Demerchi, Nicola King, James R. Mcfarlane, Pierre D.J. Moens
School of Biomedical Sciences
Homocysteine (Hcy) is a breakdown product of methionine metabolism. The risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) correlates with an increase in plasma Hcy levels. The aim of this study was to investigate whether 1% methionine supplementation of adult rats altered intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, intracellular Ca2+ content, and contractile activity in freshly isolated cardiomyocytes. This was measured under normal conditions and during oxidative stress in freshly isolated cardiomyocytes. Single rat cardiomyocytes from both sexes were isolated by enzymatic and mechanical dispersion techniques. Fluorescence microscopy was used to measure ROS production and intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Cell contraction was measured using …
